Pun intended...
So, I hate to break the rules (First rule of RPGS, don't talk about RPGS...) or go off on wild goose-chases, but it's what I'm about to propose.
There seems to be talk about archtypes for Wizards or Clerics. Should we as a community or contestant pool be discussing the mechanic for this?
What "X" to swap out for what "Y"? Or is it not that difficult?
Even with collaboration, there are only 32 possible individuals that can use them out of the hundreds or thousands who entered. And, we'd all have the same thread as reference.

It's tempting, but I don't think that's a great idea right now. If cleric archetypes will be part of the challenge, then I'm guessing the judges will want to see each contestant's own ideas and execution, rather than using and responding to explicit forum discussion. And if (as I'd guess likely) the challenge won't be pointed in that particular direction, then discussion now wouldn't be good for contestants who'd want to take on this tricky, unexplored challenge - a lot of the innovation and tough choices would be pre-hashed.
I'd love to see this discussed once the round's through, though. In fact, I've little doubt it will be :)

Yeah, what would really suck, is if a contestant has been working on a great Archtype and then it somehow becomes discussed here. Then that contestant would either be accused of stealing or copying the idea from the Forum instead of coming up with a new idea (or worse, you come up with a great idea and discuss it here and someone -does- steal your idea). It's best to not discuss any part of the contest until winners are chosen from each particular round.

I call dibs on the Panty Raider rogue archetype then.
It gets a favored panty bonus, like a ranger. When it sees that type of panty it has a bonus on all sleight of hand and stealth checks towards the wearer of the panties. If he manages to steal some of his favored panties, he gets a +5 for all rolls for the next 24 hours.
1/2 BAB, good fort/ref/will saves, & 6+ skills. Gets same spell progression as a bard (heavy on illusion and divination). He needs illusion to be able to hide before and after the snatch. And then the divination to find the panties...

Does he get bonuses for wedgies?
Noteleks
No bonuses for wedges but if he happens to steal them directly from the wearer then the Panty Raider rogue receives +10 bonus to the following skills:
Diplomacy (Wearer's Family)
Disable Device
Escape Artist
Sleight of hand
Sense Motive
Stealth
Survival
Panty Raider rogue also gets +2 AC for the next 24 hours.

And as a standard action, the panty raider can attempt to remove his own undergarments without removing his pants. This requires walking at least 15 feet in a straight line followed by a DC 25 Escape Artist check.
Success grants a +6 morale bonus to Charisma for 1 hour. Failure causes 10 points of non-lethal damage and for some reason everyone starts calling you Boolander.

I was thinking Paizo would get better quality archetypes, if we discussed ideas for the mechanics and then each (if we make it to Top 32) submitted our own original ideas for the specific X's, Y's and defined them in our entries.
That's why the thread is called Archetype Mechanics, and not just Archetypes or Archetype Proposals.
And, if someone can better present my idea... they should beat me out.
Creative/original and secretive/tricky aren't the same thing. Like the the Wondrous Item round, it's an assignment. If the info is publically available to all, the playing field is even.
But, I'm not pushing for this. Just an idea to help all around. I'm open to however it goes down.
It is what it is, as they say.
Best of luck to everyone.

I call dibs on the Breast Inspector paladin archetype. His mercies are replaced with all sorts of abilities related to food safety in general and poultry-related food safety in particular. (What? You mean you didn't immediately think chicken breasts when you read "breast inspector?" Shame on you.)

I actually think even discussion of the mechanics of the archetypes could either stifle creativity or step on one of the top 32's toes. Sometimes having more of a blank canvas can allow new creative directions that wouldn't be thought of if there are more rules around what you can or can't do. With archetypes being a relatively new part of the game, I'm looking forward to seeing what the top 32 do with them that might break the mold from the APG a bit, while still staying within the general category. The more you pre-define, even in an informal discussion, the more likely it is to pidgeonhole the contestant's thoughts.
Hassan Ahmed
I can see that, but I would expect contenders to be able to navigate through the chaff and stay on target.
One can't sit and say... "No, no, no... don't talk to me about role-playing games, I'm a game developer."
But, I can respect that some people operate better that way.
We shouldn't be looking to win a lottery. We should live or die by what we can produce, and the field in general would be elevated by the discourse.
It's all good.
I hope no one thinks I'm fishing for ideas, I just love the game.
Peace.

My view here is, you're more than welcome to start or continue any discussions of homebrew Archetypes elsewhere on this messageboard or any other messageboard. There are no rules against that, explicit or implicit.
However, I think it would be very bad form to have those discussions right here and right now; it would just create a sense of some contestant's ideas not really being their own, if the "community" did something similar three weeks earlier (to be clear, I know that that's not your intent at all, but it might hang over the contestant's heads just the same).
Hassan Ahmed
Speaking of my intent... It would have been only if sanctioned by the judges. Maybe an idea for next year.
I'm a sensitive guy myself.
Really what gave me the idea is that it's the first year an Archetype is being asked of us. More of an attempt to ramp up.
Otherwise, we'll get knocked down for this seemingly obvious reason or that and the field will be cut in half quickly and the Top 16, may not have been as good as they could have been.
Sure, next year... if they ask for archetypes, we'll know better. I thought it would help Paizo, Pathfinder and the Contest.
No rebel rousing here.
Thanks for your insight.

Tis nae a bad idea. There is always a 'my round 2 if I were top 32' threads. This is probably it.
From what some of the threads suggest, archetypes is going to be hard, precisely because it is so new. Not the creativity mind you, but the balance. I think that might be a part of the contest though. We have had 4 years to learn how to get items right, they want something to show our balance teeth.
