Spell Combat and 5' steps

Round 3: Revised Magus Discussion

I can take a 5' step the same round I use Spell Combat, that is clear.
The point is , when can I take the 5' step?

Afaik usually you can't move 5' in the middle of another action, unless it is a full round attack.
Spell Combat is a single full round action that allows you to make all your attacks (as in a full round attack) and then cast an spell (or viceversa).
Can I take a 5' step between the attacks and the spell casting? If I can do it I would save a lot of Concentration checks (attack, move, cast; or cast, move, attack if not adjacent)

It wasn't very important for the previous version of the Magus, because back then you were forced to cast defensively no matter the situation. However now I need to be sure how it works.

Take 5-Foot Step

You can move 5 feet in any round when you don't perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can't take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can't take a 5-foot step in the same round that you move any distance.

You can take a 5-foot step before, during, or after your other actions in the round.

You can only take a 5-foot-step if your movement isn't hampered by difficult terrain or darkness. Any creature with a speed of 5 feet or less can't take a 5-foot step, since moving even 5 feet requires a move action for such a slow creature.

You may not take a 5-foot step using a form of movement for which you do not have a listed speed.

Unless it's explicitly stated that you can't take a 5-foot step during the action, you can do it basically anytime.

I'm going to call this move "the fade away scorcher." Press the attack, take a step back, and drain the ray attack. Reminds me of a DnD style Michael Jordan move.

That's an interesting, and cool tactic.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Especially with Maneuver Mastery, you can use well-placed Bull-rush or Reposition attempts to position your enemies for the perfect area spell, all in one turn.

The Exchange

Can't Spell Combat with a Bull Rush or Reposition, as they're both Standard Actions, not 'attack' Actions. Disarm, Sunder, and Trip are your 'in place of a melee attack' options, the others all take Standard Actions, so can't be used in a Full Attack.

I'm sorry I haven't posted the build yet but thats where a shield bashing Magus can get a leg up with Shield Slam. Not nessisarly optimal, but stylish. Dont forget to take advantage of the 5 ft. step if you send one badguy flying, quickly move to get you next swing in at a better angle.

If someone takes a 5 foot step back from you like an enemy archer you could do a lot of things. Like shocking grasp on your weapon 5 foot step and spellstrike. Or if your not threatened cast true strike while taking minus 2 and then get +18 net to hit. Use pool spell if you do not have it prepared.
