Rest in peace, my friend. Or in your case, hilarity.

You were the first man to make me wet my pants with laughter.

Silver Crusade

I'm sorry to hear this. RIP

+RIP. In my mind, he will always first be Commander John J. Adams of the United Planets Cruiser C-57D.

Rumack: Captain, how soon can you land?

Captain Oveur: I can't tell.
Rumack: You can tell me. I'm a doctor.
Captain Oveur: No. I mean I'm just not sure.
Rumack: Well, can't you take a guess?
Captain Oveur: Well, not for another two hours.
Rumack: You can't take a guess for another two hours?

Jack: What's going on? We have a right to know the truth!
Rumack: [to the passengers] All right, I'm going to level with you all. But what's most important now is that you remain calm. There is no reason to panic.
[Rumack's nose grows an inch long]
Rumack: Now, it is true that one of the crew members is ill... slightly ill.
[Rumack's nose continues to grow longer and longer; al la Pinocchio]
Rumack: But the other two pilots... they're just fine. They're at the controls flying the plane... free to pursue a life of religious fulfillment.

Rumack: You'd better tell the Captain we've got to land as soon as we can. This woman has to be gotten to a hospital.
Elaine Dickinson: A hospital? What is it?
Rumack: It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

RIP. :(

RIP. You will be missed.

Much as I loved him in Airplane, I think he'll always be Lt. Frank Drebin in my book.

"My name is Sergeant Frank Drebin, Detective Lieutenant, Police Squad. There'd been a recent wave of gorgeous fashion models found naked and unconscious in laundromats on the West Side. Unfortunately, I was assigned to investigate holdups of neighborhood credit unions. I was across town doing my laundry when I got the call on the double killing."

"Like a midget at a urinal, I was going to have to keep on my toes."

"Sorry we would have come earlier but your husband wasn't dead then."

Before the Naked Gun, I thought he was great back when it was Police Squad on TV.

RIP.

Ahh Leslie Nielson. I grew up with his comedy. I remember him form the Naked Gun series the best. I will miss him dearly RIP

Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?

The thing that's strangest about that movie is that it's a fairly faithful re-make of what was supposed to be a serious movie called Zero Hour right down to how oddly creepy the pilot is (though I'm pretty sure that line doesn't actually appear).

I'm going to have to go rent some Leslie Nielsen films and watch them next weekend...

For those who've forgotten:

  • He played God on Herman's Head
  • Dracula, Dead and Loving It. 'Nuff said.
  • He had parts in Columbo, S.W.A.T., Kung Fu, The Love Boat, Hawaii Five-O and Fantasy Island, to name a few.
  • He was the captain on The Poseidon Adventure (the 1972 original)
  • His first roll was on TV in 1950

I am sorry to hear that such a funny man has died.

I am also sorry to hear that on more than one occasion someone made you laugh that much.

nooooo!!!

how sad. he was always such a silly guy. :-(

He made a nice family movie called Rent A Kid; I own it; He takes over an orphanage and rents kids; dogs; hehe; his negotiations with clients are pretty funny; is perhaps one of his last movies; but I enjoyed it.

Joey, have you ever seen your mother get out of the shower? Water beading on her skin...

I still have that movie on the DVR. Was watching it and asked the roommate to ID him. It wasn't until he uttered a line in the same dire seriousness that he does in Airplane that she recognized him.

"That's all right, sir. A commanding officer doesn't need brains, just a good, loud voice."

Leslie had both ... and the best comic timing this side of Groucho Marx.

I can just see him reducing St. Peter to helpless laughter as he pulls a pratfall coming through the Pearly Gates.

Rumack: What was it we had for dinner tonight?

Elaine Dickinson: Well, we had a choice of steak or fish.

Rumack: Yes, yes, I remember, I had lasagna.

RIP...

I'll always think of him as Dr. Rumack from Airplane.

RIP, Mr. Nielson.

And not to threadjack, but we also lost Irvin Kershner. I first saw The Empire Strikes Back on VHS as a kid, but it changed everything about how I thought of sci-fi and fantasy.

RIP, Mr. Kershner.

+2, and Forbidden Planet was a wonderful movie to help you with your grocery bill, Sir.

RIP

I'm not familiar with his earlier, serious work, but I loved Airplane!
