Jason Bulmahn talks about how to change the Magus in the podcast Know Direction

Round 1: Magus

I wanted to point this out to people so they can try the idea that he was talking about. He gets into it on min. 24.

Know Direction 16: Blame Bulmahn

He says to change spell combat to a lvl. one ability, and change it to a minus 2 to attack and no concentration check penalty.

You can also increase the attack penalty in order to give a bonus to the concentration check. (No specifics as to a limit on this)

He said he is thinking about this, but is pretty sure this is what they will be doing.

That looks like a good change :)

Were do you get this podcast?

Well wretched Mudkips, that would have made my last two games playing a Magus much more enjoyable....

As enjoyable being K.O.ed critical hit by Kobold sling stones can be at first level XP. I'm debating if it's worth the trouble to write up the two adventures so far in the play test area. On balance I did Daze locked a kobold for 6 rounds... while the cleric bleed out and monk kept missing DX.

The guy that is interviewing said his Magus is level eight, I think there are two. You already get the two less for concentration and the - 2 for fighting with a weapon at eighth level. The rest is new about subtracting from your hit to add to your concentration.

Jason never says that you are to start from first level to do what you get at level eight in the podcast. He only says to make spellstrike and spell combat from first level. I believe Jason is assuming these Magus are eighth level.

You could subtract for the house, fight defensively, get your spell off automatically and gain AC when casting. Why not ever do this subtraction thing?

I disagree. At level 8 you'd get Improved Spell Combat which is exactly how he talks about Spell Combat working. He wouldn't have needed to say anything but move it to 1st level and exchange to hit for a concentration bonus if he hadn't meant to decrease the penalties from the get go.

I suspect that if the host had said he was a higher level Jason might have been able to tell him something else. I'd guess that the benefits of Great Spell Combat have been moved to a level somewhere in between where Improved and Greater used to be.

He said make it a level 1 ability. Did I miss something?

That's what I thought I heard as well......

Now I'm getting antsy again to see the V2 version.

So was this podcast recorded near 10/08/2010?
If so its been almost 6 weeks, has the words of power playtest been released yet?

Paizo Employee Director of Games

We are hoping to get the Words of Power playtest up very very soon.

Other things, (re: emergencies) delayed the release of these rules.

I hope it wasn't very bad emergencies, I hope everything is ok and still on track.

It may sound like it but as for the exact words he said, he only mentioned the spell combat and the spellstrike as a first level option. I don't think he said anything else goes to first level. I could be taking the wording to extremes, but I believe Jason left the rest of the options open. It seems I'm alone in right field here. Everyone feels otherwise like you.

I hope everyone involved is safe, healthy and out of jail. Do your best, Jason. We're only impatient because we like your stuff!

Ah good times. Memories...

Seriously, though, I really am just super excited about playing a Magus and maybe using Words of Power with it. Like stupid with excitement. Crazy with it. I think about it a lot. It's eating at me like post-coital female praying mantis.

I'm in the same boat...
