I just want to make certain I'm crafting right due to all the bonus's to alchemy crafting an alchemist can get.
I have a 6th level alchemist with Master Alchemist feat (don't convert item cost to SP) and the Swift Alchemy class feature (half the crafting time).
My Craft Alchemy skill is 22.
To determine how much time and money it takes to make an item, follow these steps.
Crafting Rules:
Find the DC on Table: Craft Skills.
Pay one-third of the item’s price for the cost of raw materials.
Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s worth of work.
If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC. If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item. (If the result × the DC equals double or triple the price of the item in silver pieces, then you’ve completed the task in one-half or one-third of the time. Other multiples of the DC reduce the time in the same manner.) If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.
If you fail a check by 4 or less, you make no progress this week.
If you fail by 5 or more, you ruin half the raw materials and have to pay half the original raw material cost again.
Progress by the Day
You can make checks by the day instead of by the week. In this case your progress (check result × DC) should be divided by the number of days in a week.
So I'm crafting a potion of Alchemists Fire (20 gp and 20 DC), and I'm going to say I roll a 10 for a total of 32.
32x20=640
This result is way more than the cost of 20 for the item so I break it down per day for simplicity:
640/7=91
Which I round down to 4 times more than the item cost. So I divide 24 by 4 to figure the number of hours.
24/4=6
Which I then cut in half because it takes half as long.
6/2=3
So a vial of Alchemist's fire would take my 6th level Alchemist 3 hours.
Do I have all that right? Anyone with more experience with crafting please chip in.

I made a spreadsheet for crafting alchemical items. Check it out here.
One thing about crafting is you can only work 8 hours per day, so you wouldn't divide 24 by 4 you'd divide 8 by 4 giving you 2 hours. Now, using the swift alchemy it drops to 1 hour. Now, because you have a good alchemy bonus to make things faster crafting you can add +10 to the DC to make it faster. Doing this raises how much work you can do which speeds things up. With your skill you'd be able to make alchemist's fire in 35 minutes based on my spreadsheet. :)

That is a very nice spreadsheet. And chance of you emailing it to me?
And thanks for your reply.

The link doesn't download it for you? Why would I need to email it to you?

Woohoo!
Thanks Eric, this has saved me doing some crappy maths while at the table! But on a lot of the items, the cells for Days, Hours and Minutes to Take are all showing #DIV/0! instead of the proper calculations. Looks like their Ave Results are empty and there is a flow on

The core rules stipulate the DC for the Craft check that you have to make in order to craft alchemical items (15 for acid, 20 for alchemist's fire, smokesticks or tindertwigs, etc.), but only for the items that are in the core rules. My question is, if I am playing an alchemist who wants to make some bloodblock or weapon blanch, what is the DC for the Craft check? I don't see it in the PRD rules, and I was wondering if there was an official listing that I missed somewhere.

I don't know about the PRD, but they are in the APG. Seems kinda sloppy to not have them in the prd...

I am playing an alchemist and was still tring to figure out the base cost for making potions to sell as my profession is Magical Merchant and wonder how to figure out the cost for potion of cure light would be for me.
If you have a core rule book: its all in the back of the book in the crafting magic items section.
Else: Item Creation Feats To make magic items it costs the creator 1/2 the base price. For for potions its (Spell Level)*(Caster Level)*50 for the base price. Half of that is what you pay to create it.
Now, if you're talking about the actual skill Profession(Magical Merchant) then that has nothing to do with actually creating items. You'd spend your week working, make your check, and get half of the result in gold.

Regarding the crafting rules, I find that there's one thing in particular that is especially dumb.
It is that the progress per given time (typically day or week) is calculated based on the item's craft DC. That makes no sense. It means easy to craft things take longer to create than difficult to craft things.
I rule it so that the crafting progress is skill check squared rather than skill check multiplied by DC. This removes the necessity of having to add +10 to the DC when you can— something that is oddly rigid and arbitrary and seems to discourage investing points into craft alchemy past a certain point.
Another advantage of this system is that you can craft multiple items with different costs easily all at once, since progress is irrelevant to the item being made, you just produce x value worth of product every day or week.
Also, regarding the spreadsheet
I have the spreadsheet. It's in ODS format; I don't know if that's the only format available or not. I also don't know if it's an older version or not, but it should be sufficient. It's missing many modern items now of course though.
I'll look into uploading it if he doesn't make a reply about it.
make sure to send him a private message to get his attention, or even an email. Posting in this thread probably wouldn't be the most optimal way to get his attention (although it was fortunate in that I do have a copy)

I don't know about his spread sheet but I randomly came across another person's work just days ago.

This is NOT my work. So giving credit where it is due. But it seems they tool the time to make it right.
If you want to inflate the dc to make the item quicker just up the dc by 10 as per rules.
Very decent.

Ok, spent several hours last night and this morning updating my spreadsheet. As far as I can tell it has every alchemical item from the core, campaign setting, and player companion books (haven't checked the APs though they might be some there). I didn't do poisons. I had them on it, but I didn't keep that updated so I deleted that sheet. There's four items from Blood of the Elements and Melee Tactics Toolbox that didn't have craft DCs so you'll see errors for them since I just entered XX. For a home game, feel free to enter your own DCs. Once you do, the formulas will correct themselves.
