Open Recruitment - Pathfinder PbP

After a year long hiatus from the game, I've started getting back into DMing. However, finding a local group has proved to be problematic and as such I've decided to see if I can get a PbP started here.

The game will begin in the small fishing village of Daven's Rest, located along the coast of Lake Kavapesta in Ustalav. Due to its nature as a port along for Ustalav, its relative proximity to Lastwall, and several nearby ruins, Daven's Rest experiences a higher degree of foreign traffic than much of Ustalav so there are many reasons a character might be there, whether they were born there or came there seeking glory or wealth.

I am looking for 4-6 players with a good character concept and who can commit to posting regularly (preferably more or less daily).

Rules
Characters will start at first level, built with 20 point buy.
We will be using most anything in the Advanced Player's Guide or the Pathfinder Reference Document.
Additionally, I am open to some *reasonable* classes/races from other Pathfinder sources or even adequate conversions of 3.5 content, however anything falling under this category will be given due consideration on a case by case basis.

If interested, please post with your character concept and any questions you have.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

I'm interested. Willing to play whatever works with other characters. First choice is probably a gnome summoner (or alchemist), but if someone else has their hearts set on those classes, I can easily come up with another concept.

*Carawyn Ellyzig Finwinkle* (just three of her names, but she knows humans prefer shorter sobriquets) was neglected while growing up by her parents, who were so involved in their magical studies they tended to forget she was there. So, like many children, she created an imaginary friend to play with. The only difference was her friend eventually began showing up, as Carawyn began tapping into her latent power. Faced with this evidence of her power, Carawyn's parents began paying attention to her, tutoring her in magic. Despite their best efforts, though, she learned only a handful of spells, choosing to focus her arcane talents on her eidolon. She eventually set out on her own, her eidolon -- Mouse -- in tow.

Carawyn has a deep-seated need to be liked and paid attention to. She tries to ingratiate herself with her comrades, even when she doesn't need to. In times of emotional trouble, she can become withdrawn, choosing to confide in her eidolon, but in general her "you like me, you really, really like me" attitude remains in the forefront.

The Exchange

I would like to submit a concept for an Inquisitor of Pharasma, the death goddess.

Irian Du'Lac, Human Inquisitor (Pharasma)

Spoiler:

Irian was a warrior and rogue agent for a number of years, fighting for most anything and anyone as long as the money was good. A contract he took with a man named Lefey ended with Irian killing a holy man who worshipped the death goddess. The man's death had been messy, and as Irian knelt by him to finish the job, his victim had grasped his shirt and stared deeply into his eyes "Finish my work" was all he had managed before his last breath bubbled otut from bloodied lips.

The words and the look haunted Irian all night, and a vision of carrion birds circling his own corpse lying in a darkened alley caused him to wake in the early hours of the morning in a cold sweat. The vision, and his growing sense of unease forced him to take more care than usual when he went to meet his employer the next day. The men who laid in ambush for him were surprised when he arrived along the roof tops instead of the agreed location. He had killed at least one of them before being forced to flee, but during the fight he had discovered a presence within him he hadn't known before.

Thinking it best to leave the city he attempted to purchase passage on the next ship out of town, but found his path always blocked by red tape or bad luck. What was worse, a growing need to track down LeFey and destroy him was eating away at Irian until he finally could stand it no more. He succumbed ot the urge and tracked the man down in his cellar one rainy evening, to find him conducting necromantic rituals on the street urchins that seemed to plague this city. His death had been easy, with the cold steel of Irians sword slipping through his chest as LeFey gasped in surprise. As the man died, a sense of righteousness filled him, something he had never felt in the few years of mercenary work he had done before. He had changed in that moment, driven now to ensure the enemies of the godess could not interfere with the rightful process of death and the passing of the spirit into the next realm.

Irian travels now where his godess urges him, still struggling to come to terms with the powers she has granted him, and never fully understanding what he is meant to be doing until he finds the enemies she has sent him to destroy. Three times now he has killed for her, and each case was differnt. A beggar in one town who had taken to poisoning the other poor folk in his area so his pickings could grow, a guardsmen the next town who was allowing grave robbers free access to the local tombs, and most recently a merchants daughter who had begun dabbling in the arts macarbe. Each time he felt the riteous burn that his goddess had approved, but his actions had left him unwelcome in at least one town he had worked, forcing him to leave in the dead of night so those he had angered could not exact their vengence. Now he finds himself in Ustalav, again drawn by the unknown will of the godess who now possesses his soul.

It's a little cliche, but I think he would be fun to play. He's drifted from neutral evil in his early life, to Lawful neutral now. A process that has been hard for him to come to terms with, given Pharasma's direct hand in it. The godess is shaping him into the tool she wants.

Dark Archive

I like both of your character concepts; they should be interesting to see in play.

Additionally, as this isn't a pre-published module, I will be able to tailor encounters to whatever the party composition ends up being, so there's no need to restrict your concepts based on what others are or aren't playing.

I am interested. I will have a concept up soon, have to eat.

I'm interested, too. Here's a brief intro:

Ghorum Kraak is a dwarf who hails from the Lands of the Linnorm Kings, proud of his snow white beard and his stout, solid frame. The son of a poor miner, Ghorum knew very early in his life that he did not want to follow in his father's footsteps. He left home before adulthood, tagging along with a mercenary company of Ulfen warriors headed south looking for work, or, failing that, loot.

They taught him to fight and enjoy life, carousing to all hours of the day and night. Some would classify him as an alcoholic, but he just gets moody when he drinks too much.

A master of the dwarven waraxe, Ghorum relishes a good fight, often picking out the toughest looking opponent. This has yet to backfire, but Ghorum knows full well he might choose the wrong opponent one day, and meet his ancestors before his time is due.

Scarab Sages

I have an idea for a Human Cavalier. He's Chaotic Good, basically sort of a "cowboy cop" type who decided that doing things by the rules would do more harm than good. Posting daily will not be an issue at all.

Gwynn Everard is on the run from Taldor after his apprentice Knighthood ended in disaster. He's the son of a well-to-do, upper-middle-class family that had enough money to pay for a high-quality education and eventually attract the attention of a Knight looking for a talented squire. Gwynn took easily to the role, almost the knight's equal in education and military strategy, if not swordplay, though it seemed that with enough practice and experience, swordplay, too, would be one of Gwynn's areas of expertise. For the better part of a year, Gwynn was a faithful and helpful squire, occasionally even being of real help to his master by backing him up in fights or suggesting new and ingenius tactics in battle.

The apprenticeship ended early when Gwynn saw the sort of orders the Knight was sometimes expected to carry out. Brutal suppression of those who spoke out against their rulers. Cooperation and compromise with crime guilds. When confronted about it, his master said such things were needed to keep the peace - trying to fix all of the world at once would bee too fast, to sudden. Gwynn didn't believe him for a second, called him out for being corrupt and fled into the wilderness. He has not looked back. He has cut ties with everyone he knew in Taldor and traveled away, hoping only that he will find some opportunity in his life to be a hero without compromise, and a opponent of evil, without hesitation.

Dark Archive

Both of those concepts also look promising.

Thus far, we have:
Motteditor - Gnome Summoner
Wrath - Human Inquisitor
Torillan - Dwarf Fighter or Barbarian?
Face_P0lluti0n - Human Cavalier

Recruitment is still open to 1-2 more players.

To those who have posted thus far: please begin statting up your characters for review.

I'm pretty sure I'll go with a fighter. And I'll try to post some basic stats by tomorrow. Thanks for the opportunity!

Sounds good. Happy to have you :)

Lantern Lodge

I'm interested and have a concept I've been tooling with for awhile. Marinthilo Sharavhim the Gnome Cleric of Pharasma who seeks to become the angel of death. When he was younger, Marin had a close call with an ogre and nearly died. Seeing the light of Pharasma just before he returned to the world of the living, he converted to the worship of Pharasma and took up arms in her name. He seeks to become an angel of death and bearer of souls to the Void so that he may be closer to his goddess. I thought this was an interesting concept because a cleric of death and a gnome just seemed like such complete opposites. Honestly, who would take one seriously? My second concept is Ridley Freemont - halfling ranger who was abandoned in the Wilds as an infant and raised by a pack of wolves. He grew up to defend the Wilds alongside Ren, his wolfen companion.

Dark Archive

Having two follower's of Pharasma could prove to be interesting, and having a cleric would most likely be helpful. Go ahead and stat/write him up :)

Do you have room for a Diviner?

She is a starchild and a wandering elven Astronomer. Seven years ago she found herself walking under a canopy of stars along the shores of Lake Kavapesta , having forgotten her past and with no recollection of how she arrived there. She does not even know her name. She remembered how to speak her language and some basic survival skills...not much more. Her fine raiment and manners drew the curious attention of locals and she soon found herself the guest of a hedge mage, who was interested in her story. He took her in and invited her to stay. No magic or or inquisition has been able to penetrate the darkness of her amnesia. She remained as a guest of the mage, who was impressed by her intellect and invited her to stay as an apprentice, help him with research and study in his library.

For some reason she is drawn to and fascinated by the night sky. She is a careful observer of the heavens and the minutiae of celestial mechanics. She is on a quest to build a powerful lense with which to better observe unusual celestial objects in the sky. For her project she requires wealth. Lots of it. Over seven years of study she has mastered the arts of Divination to an impressive degree and has grown weary of the mage's company. The time has come for her to venture forth and seek her own fortune. She has come to Daven's Rest because she heard that there may be ruins to plunder in the area. She has also heard that successful adventuring companies are known to gather here from time to time.

Well this is the beginnings of Irian. I've done his base stats and pasted his background in but that is all.

He's not optimised for anything really, but statted based around the background concept. Remembering he was a hired mercenary before becoming a holy warrior.

I've never built nor seen played an Inquisitor so I guess this will be a learning cirve for me as well.

I'm actually leaning more to taking his dex up rather than strength since most of the wepon proficiencies of the class seem to be missile based.

I'll tinker with him some more and see how he progresses tomorrow. Must head off to do some marking now.

Oh, a few questions.
1) Are you allowing traits?
2) How much starting gold should we use?
3) How would you like us to do HP's?

Cheers

Dark Archive

Old Tanner, your concept should work fine. Do you have anything in specific in mind for her forgotten past, or is it a blank slate even to you as a player?

Ah yes.
Traits - I will allow any two traits from a Paizo source, although you'll need to summarize your choices and include them in your character profile. Alternatively, you can forgo taking your two traits and instead take a single bonus feat.

Starting Gold - Starting gold is 175 across the board.

HP - Max hp at first level, rolled after that point with your Constitution modifier added to each roll. Rolls of 1 can be re-rolled.

Our roster thus far:
Motteditor - Gnome Summoner
Wrath - Human Inquisitor or Pharasma
Torillan - Dwarf Fighter
Face_Pollution - Human Cavalier
Severed Ronin - Gnome Cleric?
Old Tanner - Elf wizard (Diviner?)

Celestial Half-Porc - TBA

Recruitment is now closed.

Dungeon Master Grim wrote:

Thanks for taking on the Diviner.

I would be very happy with a blank slate, however you probably want something more to work with.

Perhaps she was once a more powerful character whose brain was washed (level drain). Perhaps she has already figured out some clues about her past. Her interest in the sky might have something to do with it. Maybe she was abducted by aliens. lol.

Seriously. I picture a mysterious traveler - a forlorn elf - who somehow lost her identity and is piecing it together. Let me start drawing up the character. Often when I select feats, trait and skills the pieces fall into place and I end up with a working concept and some clues to get things going.

OK, here's Carawyn, though I still have to get her noncombat gear and stat up Mouse.

This is the first time I've done a summoner, and first time I've done a first-level character in a long time, so feel free to offer any constructive advice anyone. Obviously she's going to do her best to stay out of (melee) combat, but that's what summoned monsters and Mouse are for.

Dark Archive

Old Tanner - I'm willing to work with whatever bits and pieces you come up with, or use the blank slate for my own evil DM plans ;)

Mott - I just glanced over it, but it looks good. One thing I notice is that you can still select two traits, or an additional feat in place of those traits.

Celestial Half-Porc - Still waiting on a character concept from you.

Could everyone also tell me what might have brought them to Ustalav.

I will be creating an actual discussion thread shortly.

Face_Pollution, all looks in order. Please create a profile for him with your stats, background, and reason for being in Daven's Rest.

Liberty's Edge

Done. Just realized I forgot to pick a human bonus feat, and forgot languages. I'll take care of that in a moment.

EDIT: One thing I can't remember about PF Chronicles: Does each country have it's own national language, or is "common" shared by all the human nations?

Dark Archive

As I play it, most human dominant lands in the region share a basic language, unless otherwise stated. However, local dialects may also exist, and the language varies from nation (and locality) to nation.

Also, the discussion thread is here.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

Don't know if this will matter, but I've got nothing with the Paizo gamesetting. My knowledge of Golarion is basically nil. Obviously that doesn't affect Carawyn's background, but I don't know if there's an equivalent to, say, Red Wizards of Thay or Zhents or whatnot.

As for why she's in Daven's Rest, basically it's probably where her wandering brought her after leaving home. She's basically decided she should figure out what she wants to do with her life. (If anyone wants to do any type of shared background, I'm up for that. She could easily have met someone on the road and followed them into the city... She's really pleasant -- 18 charisma -- and is eager to make friends ...)

Looked over the traits a bit; none of them seemed to really match her history (possibly wealthy, considering her parents were both wizards) so I'll probably go for a bonus feat, but I might keep looking at them a bit longer.

Dark Archive

That's fine. Here is the Pathfinder Wiki, which has a lot of useful setting info if you need it.

No real rush, I don't expect to get started until Thursday or Friday.

Liberty's Edge

Are you still recruiting, by any chance? If so, I was thinking of being an alchemist of Sarenrae, if possible of course.

Dark Archive

We have a player who posted their interest but has yet to post a concept. If he doesn't post within the next day or two, you can replace him.

Marinthilo's stats have been drawn up and I'll work on his full background story tomorrow at work. By tomorrow night I'll have one set up and ready to go. Like I said, he's a gnome cleric of Pharasma, so you can count him amongst your group. Interested to see how he plays out with the Inquisitor. Feel free to take a look at his stats and throw in opinions and critiques where necessary. Thanks.

Dark Archive

Marin, a couple of things.

Spoiler:

-You have four traits, instead of two. You can have either two traits or a bonus feat.
-Your BAB should be +0 instead of +1

Also, your gear doesn't reflect the 175g you had to start. I'm assuming one or more of your traits are the source of this, but I'd like a breakdown of costs of the masterwork/cold iron items and where the excess gold comes from.

Grand Lodge

Should you have somebody drop, I have a concept ready and a character created. Let me know if so. :)

Dark Archive

Please post your concept, just in case.

Dungeon Master Grim wrote:
Please post your concept, just in case.

I am a total noob when it comes to PbP so I would need your guidance in what exactly would be needed but I have read several of the PbP threads and they intrigue me greatly. I used Hero Lab to create the character so please let me know if I have missed something. There character's name is P'Aye de T'Aime and here goes:

I always thought that my life's ambition was to become the Grand Harlot here in the temple of Calistra yet I have come to understand that will never happen. Mother has the legendary patience of the elves and father... well, who knows who he is for sure. I hear the other elven women in the temple speak of mother becoming one of the "Forlorn"... whatever that means. I asked them to explain that one day and they seem almost embarrassed that I heard them. They said it is her realization that I will die and she will have outlived her child. Sometimes, I think it would be better if I just left.

I have been schooled by the elders in the temple and have so many teachers. I have been schooled in what they call the "Soft Arts"... seduction, diplomacy, and love play. I have teachers in the "Hard Arts" as well... combat and self reliance. When I became of age, I was indoctrinated into the ways to the temple and the request for my talents brought a premium in donations from "the pious." I think they call themselves that because they are embarrassed. I am not ashamed of it and it's really quite flattering that men (or women for that matter) give me such control over them. Even the most majestic and powerful become so vulnerable and often ridiculous in my presence.

Often, when we have no pious travelers visiting the temple, I will amuse the sisters there with a song and I have been told that I have a beautiful singing voice... they say makes the world go away for a while. I do have a talent that thrills the sisters and makes me popular among the pious that no other in the temple has. I think I can honestly thank father for because it surely does not come from mother... magic. I use subtle tones in my voice and manner of speaking and people warm to me instantly no matter what I have said or done to them in the past. I first used it to put my visitors at ease but then learned that it did was not their reaction to my skills. I have gotten out of a few bad situations that way and eluded some punishments from the sisters for chores neglected even. Not only that, but I have the gift to become what people want to see. That is what makes me popular among the pious because, if they want lover to have red hair or less of a point to their ear, I can do that. I am the perfect whore... and I am miserable.

Why? Not because of who I am. Who I am is sacred gift from the goddess. Who I am gives me a power that kings of nations and the mightiest of heroes yield to. No, I am miserable because I have come to the realization that I will be bones and dust before anything happens. It takes a week to learn how to style my clothes in a particularly "elven" fashion and it took two years for them to teach me to understand the Varisian dialect. They once said they would teach me marksmanship "soon" and it turned out to be a year later for them to finally come around to it. I understand what the sisters once said about mother but I think it is I who have become forlorn. I realize that the sands of my life are running much faster than theirs and I will be dead and gone before some of the sisters that were born in the same year I was to even reach the same level of physical maturity that I have in my 25 years of life. Though it may break mother’s heart, it is time to strike out on my own and quicken my life.

Stobus, looks good so far.

Eric, I'm going to take your character, despite it making the group a little larger than originally intended. Since we don't currently seem to have either a skill monkey or a socially focused character, a bard could be fairly useful. So get a profile made, give me your reasons for being in dreary southern Ustalav, and you're in.

If you have a character in the game, then please, for the love of all that is holy, move to the discussion thread ;P

I'm at work right now but to clarify a few of the things I figured to post. As for the traits, I took the Additional Traits feat from the APG to allow myself two extra traits. If we aren't using the APG I'll have no problem changing the setup. As for the gold, it comes from the Rich Parents trait which I planned on either having Marin's parents being successful enough to have saved the money up for his adventuring or, my hopes, have it yo where the Church of Pharasma give him the money (just change the name for flavor text). The way I see it with that is that the church would want to ensure its clerics are properly armed for their duties and provided the funds. Using that money, the dagger, armor, and mundane gear come into play. As for the morningstar, the Reclaiming Your Roots trait allows one piece of equipment up to 350 gp in value that the character inherited or received somehow. I see Marin's mentor at the church passing this weapon onto his student. As for the BAB and those, all necessary modifiers had already been applied (to include negative modifiers from size) but I will double-check and ensure those are properly recorded. Hope most of that clarified the stat sheet. If there's anything else please let me know. Also cold iron costs double the normal amount of the weapon and making it masterwork on top of that increases it 300 gp. For the morningstar to be this the total comes to 324 gold pieces which is under the limit of 350. I built the character using Hero Lab, so all necessary calculations were accounted for there before I double-checked it.

Alright, my copy of the APG is currently at a friend's house, so I've been unable to look up the traits.

I still think your BAB is listed incorrectly; at first level, clerics have a +0 base attack bonus.

I know it's too late to get in now, but I thought I'd throw a concept in anyway. Gargos Ku'thark male Half-orc Sorcerer (Undead bloodline).

Having distant relatives in the armies of the Whispering Tyrant never went over well with the locals of Daven's Rest. Only making it worse was the fact that his dark gift was starting to rear its ugly face. About a year ago now Gargos started to notice himself changing, his face became gaunt and his skin began to lighten. Walking down the road through town would cause animals to panic and people to turn and stare. Gargos knew it was time to prepare to leave, he just wasn't sure how or when he could.

Sorry for not posting before. I have a busier schedule during the weekends it seems. Thanks.

I've held a spot on the roster for you, since you expressed interest early on. Please prepare your character as directed above.

If all spots have been filled, that's fine. Perhaps you can post on my thread if you get a new one up and going?

Unfortunately yes; we're already at 7 players, and I don't want to go beyond that as a lot of players tends to slow a PbP down.

I have an idea for another campaign that I've been tossing around for a while, however I'm going to hold off on deciding to start anything else for a week or two to see how running a game affects my schedule.

Almost ready! I should finish at some point tomorrow...

One question: are you planning on a TWF build?

Yes, I am. He'll be using twin Dwarven Waraxes in the next few levels. He can do it via Ranger without needing a high Dex.

I must admit, this is my first TWF Ranger character, and I'm looking forward to playing him.

Hmm, didn't know that before (never really had an interest in playing a ranger). That's pretty cool.

The Exchange

he'll have some big negatives initially though, given that neither is a light weapon for his offhand.

I have friends in my real life game that do this all the time with longswords. Turns them into twin weapon high crit killing machines, but only when they can hit the target. Scary combo hehe.

Yeah, I'm not expecting a lot of hits initially, but I'm genuinely intrigued to see how he functions as a front-line combatant over a straight fighter (those I've played plenty of times).

I am looking forward to the inevitable double crit strike, tho...<grin>

So Ghorum's not straight? (Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
