Are liches the new ninjas?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

So what's up with liches lately?

We have three threads on the first page of these forums where 3 different players are playing or asking about playing characters whose goals are to become liches.

But we have no threads on the front page about playing ninjas.

Now, I would ask where all the ninjas went, but that would be pointless - nobody can find ninjas when they don't want to be found. But my real question is have liches become cool enough to replace ninjas for the number 1 spot of elite superbitshin character godliness?

I still do think that Advanced Fiendish Dire Roper Ranger/Bards with Celestial Gas Spore Paladin ancestry are "the thing".

Followed by Pugwampis.

Liches - just third place.

Nah, Vampires are the new Ninjas.

Silent, deadly, living in the dark, powerful (their score modifiers are way more high than those of Liches), glamourous and uber-deadly against characters without a Protection from Evil spell.

No, seriously, look at their Dominate ability: in 3.5, it required the Vampire to look at their target into their eyes (it was basically a gaze attack without the 'passive' effect, it could only be used during the Vampire's turn), now it is simply a 'target' effect.

Plus, Vampires are easy to create...

And they do not sleep during the day. They simply have to avoid sunlight. Put on a heavy blanket (like Spike did in the Buffy series) and you should be fine.

All I have to add is this...

Spoiler:
Aboleth Ninja

Trust me....you don't want to know.

Or maybe just take the variant vampire racial trait that lets them sparkle in the sunlight.

That is the real stake in the heart of any 'old-stye' Vampire fan :(

Spoiler:

and please note that I really loved Anne Rice's version and the flamboyant Lestat - until the novels became too much mystical and angels and demons and mumbo-jumbo, basically I stopped reading the Vampire Chronicles after 'Memnoch the Devil'...

I never did catch the Japanophile bug, so ninjas induce snoring for me. Liches, however, are probably my favorite fantasy rpg villain, or the one that hooked me. As a pc, though? I'm not a big fan of evil campaigns. I dunno, if things were built around it in a campaign I could see it being fun, but as just an odd choice of advancement I could see it get irritating for everyone else. Haven't read those threads, but I'd be leery of it being a new version of the 'make it all about me' ploy... as seems to happen with ninjas, vampires, the odd drow.

Disclaimer: no, I'm not saying that any of those are invalid concepts. I'm just saying that most of us have probably seen examples of one of those popping up and irritating everyone else. The one guy isn't happy being an oddball in a setting not built around his concept, so he tries to make the DM 'Shinobify' his Arctic Adventure campaign or whatever to suit his ninja, or completely alter a setting, and possibly the plot, so his drow can sulk in pubs without getting killed on sight.

If it isn't that, and a DM is working with it, then it might be fun! It does seem to defy being classed with those other things by simply being ugly, so...

Where do people get the rules for becoming a lich anyhow?

I'm another who finds little of interest in anonymous kabuki assassins. Liches, on the other hand, are inherently cool because they're ancient immortal wizards, at least when done right.

Asian flavor is fine, however. Look at "Big Trouble in Little China" and then think of Lo Pan, the BBEG of the film. Is he a ninja or a lich?

Lich all the way. He's being opposed by a ninja with a wizard mentor and a rogue/jester sidekick (admirably played by Kurt Russell), but Lo Pan is most emphatically a lich.

Hmmmm, any lingering Skeletor nostalgia perhaps?

No, not criticizing, I watched that too. Back in the day...

No!

You can't have them!

I fear you would succumb to the temptation...

Actually, liches are the new pirates.

Oooh, yes, and September 19th is only 3 months away. Time to start getting prepared.

So, any advice on how to talk like a lich?

Liches are wizards (gamers love wizards) who, instead of dying like a chump (nobody likes to die), became Skeletor (everyone loves Skeletor) and hid their soul in a weird and complex puzzle (nerds adore puzzles, and I'm one of them)

Liches are literally created from everything we as gamers love.

It seems to me just players looking for broken ways to make their PC's more powerful.. supposedly paizo has to recreate the lich, a phylactery doesnt work for player characters, unlike npcs who play fair and keep their phylactery hidden in a plain trapped room, pcs go to extreme lengths to be near unkillable.

Should have just scrapped the phylactery, never did think it added much anyway, and what is with the +8 stealth.. no wonder nobody likes ninjas nomore, just make a lich shadowdancer.

They're spellcasting zombies!

What's not to like?

Well, I meant Acererak, but Skeletor's pretty good, too:) Plus, he can spot you on bench presses.

If it makes any of you feel any better, my character for my group's upcoming CoT (after the current LoF game ends and I get to retire my GM hat for a bit) is a westernized, elven greatsword wielding ninja complete with stealth sneak attack and ninja magic (UMD).

After that, I plan on playing a Tian-Shu Summoner complete with anime dragon Eidolon.

And then, for Kingmaker, The Count of Monte Cristo with all the serial numbers filed off and magic added.

I am so original.
Not.

Ryzoken wrote:

Sadly, no, that didn't help much... ;)

(tell me, will your summoner throw little plastic eggs onto the ground and say things like "Eidolon, I choose you!")

-just kidding-

(I think)

Now, if we can get three more of you to post on three more threads, we can have the ninja fans outnumbering the lich fans, at least on a front-page thread-war basis.

Oooh, war.

Thought Experiment time: Who wins the war between a clan of ninjas and a crypt of liches?

(And is "crypt" the right group-word for lich groups? I would have gone with "murder" but crows already own that one. And "gaggle" seems just too silly for liches).

Lich, ninja, pirates. So five minutes ago. Bored now.

When can I start seeing some builds for cybernetically-enhanced dinosaurs?

A little anthropomorphic triceratops, a dash of renegade mastermaker, we could make this happen!

Depends on who the GM is. I know for a fact when I run a Lich, they go through the exact same sort of extreme lengths as PC's. The Lich does NOT want his phylactery found. The whole reason he became a Lich was to never die, ergo he's doing everything in his (likely vast) power and intellect to hide it somewhere that it will never ever be found.

I hope we see Sparkly Ninjas and Sparkly Liches, it's awesome when everyone's favorite things are ruined by teen angst.

DM_Blake wrote:

Those who do the first attack lose. They kill all the other clan, except for one member, and then the last survivor is far more powerful than them, because he's the last survivor.

But you shouldn't forget dracolich.

I mean, it's basically a dinosaur lich ! Only a pirate-ninja dracolich is even cooler.

Shadow Lodge

Pfft. Liches. Everyone knows that DEMI-LICHES are where it's at.

Liches have always been cool. We just like to keep that on the down low to keep the riff raff out.

You would need the help of a lich to accomplish that. Come into my parlor...

What about ninja-liches?

Bikers. It's the Hells Angels vs. Liches.

All this lich talk...
Makes me think of this one show...
"Ancient spirits of Evil... Transform this decayed form to Mum-Ra! The Everliving!" <insert maniacal laughter>

I may have the phrase slightly off, it's been a looong while since I last saw that show and well, it's being remade again... I feel old... like a lich!

I agree with the poster a few posts above. Why does it have to be liches, ninjas or pirates? Why can't it be Ninja/Lich/Pirates? Multiclassing is so where it's at.

DM_Blake wrote:

I think they just received a large boost from Pathfinder, both in the template directly and in the weakening of turn undead indirectly.

I would never water down my Lich-ness with any class - even ninjas or pirates.

Demi-liches are a bit too disco for my taste.

Although a modern demi-lich would just claim they like their bling.

For the lich fans among you, I present a concept that might blow your mind (or might just annoy you.) Through the wonders of WotC's 3.5 supplements, there's a possibility of playing a lich lich. That wasn't a typo, I meant what I put down. There is a way to apply the lich template to a creature regardless of its actual race. This results in, among other things, a lich lich, a dracolich lich, a lich vampire, or even a lich demilich. Want a super mindflayer lich? Lich Alhoon.

And the template effects stack!

Ahh... I wuv 3.5, because no matter what the discussion is, I can usually find some text reference to make people /facepalm.

And for the record, that summoner was totally avoiding the whole pokemon thing. Ugh, now I have to take additional steps to distance my character design from that.
