So based on the success of my Kingmaker PbP (due in no small part to the stellar group of gamers I have the priviledge of playing with), I'm going to start up a Curse of the Crimson Throne PbP.
I know that several members of my Kingmaker game are interested, and a few people in the discussion thread for my other game have also come forward. That being said, I will most likely still have a spot or two open once the chips fall even though my group does have first crack.
Please post here if you are interested with a character concept, possible background, and so on. We don't need to worry too much about the crunch yet. As of now I'm interested in characters that can bring the story to life and aid the party. Please see the CotCT Player's Guide for information on the setting, Korvosa itself, and possible plot hooks to get you right in the thick of things!
This won't be a first come, first served recruitment. I'm going to pick both interesting concepts and ones that would be a good use to the party. I'll probably give the weekend for people to express interest and make a decision Monday, 5/3/10.
Thanks in advance for the interest, and let the games begin!

Cardon Quid |

Hi Sully. Before I say anything else, I do NOT only play conjurers!!
Here is Cardon Quid, a conflicted young man with a shady and tragic past. Even though he doesn't technically have his wizard level yet, it's never made sense to me that a character goes from 0 to 100% in a trained spellcasting class like wizard, so with your permission, perhaps Cardon is able to perform a few wizardly effects, but he hasn't mastered the ability to do it when it really counts (when the pressure's on). A few harmless, RP fluff spell effects, but never anything that actually affects anything until he's gained that second level. I'd even be willing to have him try to use his wizard spells in combat from time to time, only to have them fizzle every time.
Just before the campaign begins, Cardon learns that Gaedren had had the friend who had helped him escape killed for helping him shortly after he had left. Cardon wants payback, and he wants Gaedren to suffer for it.

Hey Sully,
I have been following you all since you started Kingmaker. I think it was because I started DMing it IRL at almost the same time! lol I have never played PbP before, but I would love to give it a try with a your group and especially you as the DM. This would be my first one as I said, but I can post often and have played D&D since 1st. Just got into PF last year, but I'm loving it. I am VERY flexible as to class, race, ect as I have played most as DM over the years and as a player.
If I don't get picked, I will continue to lurk in your Kingdom. Really enjoy your game. My guys are going west as you are going east, so I get to kind of see both sides played at once as it were. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, mate! Do you have any ideas for possible character concepts? Flexible is great, but this early in the pickings it gives you a chance to try whatever you like best.

Harther from the Kingmaker PbP here. Well of course I'm interested - the hard part is figuring out what to play! Are the APG classes still off-limits? If not, I wouldn't mind trying a Varisian witch. Otherwise, I think I might try a either a Varisian sorceror or cleric of Desna. Decisions, decisions...

I'll stick with the core classes, I think. Cleric of Desna would be interesting...but then again so would the sorcerer...
You're right; tough decision!

Sully,
Sorry, since I'm the noob and you guys are all a pretty tight group I didn't want to step on any toes. I figured I would let the old hands choose first. However, if I had my duthers I would like to either play a Rogue or a Cleric(I know its a big swing! lol) My Rogue is Artreus Quinfrig, a charming swashbucking chap quick with a quip and quicker with his rapier, one I have played for years. The Cleric, probably of Sarenrae, a man fed up with Laws for the sake of Laws. Just because its evil and legal doesn't make it any less EVIL!
What kind of point buy or rolling do you use Sully? That would help me decide which one, once I see which on is more viable. I just want to play something that helps the group and contributes to a good time.
Thanks for your consideration!

Alexander Kilcoyne wrote:Alignment restrictions? No evil. Ha and know what chaotic neutral means (but you are fine there).
As far as my reckoning goes, chaotic neutral means being fairly self-centred, the whole 'what's in it for me' mentality, not a character who simply seeks to create chaos and confusion every chance he gets just for the sake of creating chaos.

So i'm thinking human fighter this time.
For a concept I was thinking about taking the Drug Addict (Personal Addiction), and the Heirloom Weapon trait from Adventurer's Armoury (it's PFS legal).
Basically, he was the son of a minor noble in Korvosa with a proud lineage; attending a military academy and excelling, he had a bright future ahead of him. He ended up apprenticed to a group of Hellknights, and initially performed well.
However, the stress of the job eventually got to him, and he ended up addicted to Shiver through Gaedren, and overdosing. To make matters worse, the Hellknights found out and informed his noble family; causing him to be disowned as well. Now that he has lost everything, he has only a single desire- to drag Gaedren down with him. He is a brute, not a thinker; and in his bitterness tries to solve most problems with his Earth-Breaker hammer.
Edit: I'm assuming we are using elite array again; my personal preference is for a 15- point buy but i'll use whatever i'm given.

Hey Max,
If you want to do one of the classes from the APG playtest, I will be allowing those in Council of Thieves. Much like Pathfinder society, if you take one of those, be prepared to update the character when the APG comes out in August.

I'd love to play an Inquisitor in that :)

Yes, I DO play other things that don't conjure stuff!

Laithoron |

Hey Sully,
I've been hoping for a chance to join a PbP as I've been DMing for close to 20 years now but seldom have the opportunity to play.
The character I'd like to play is a reprise of my old 2nd Ed. character from back in college: Alis Kirmoon. As a bard, she's both versatile and well-suited to an urban environment such as Korvosa.
Alis (pronounced like A-List without the "t") and her twin sister, Alexis, were taken in by the family of their full elven-blooded, royal cousins after their parents' untimely demise. While the title of princess brings with it certain perks, as a non-substantive princess, she lacks most of the political power typically associated with the rank.
While her sister was quite the arcane academic, Alis was too restless to make it far as either a nun or a wizardess. Nevertheless, she blanched at the thought of being a useless layabout. Possessed of a keen wit and an eclectic array of talents, she serves the royal family as an ambassador to foreign lands. Small and dainty though though she is, Alis' human side keeps the buxom blonde half-elf playful and she's not entirely unfamiliar with aggressive negotiations...
EDIT: After having read the Player's Guide, the background/hook that would make the most sense would be "Lost Love". While Alis had always been told that her parents' death was an unfortunate accident at sea, the fact that her mother's priceless wedding ring and father's heirloom sword were missing from their corpses did not escape her notice. While shopping on a diplomatic mission to Korvosa, Alis spotted the ring and sword for sale at a local merchants. While she cannot yet afford the costly pieces, she did learn that both were purchased from a man named Gaedren Lamm. She now has some more personal business to attend before concluding her business in Korvosa...
Traits: Traits: Rather than the trait suggested in that background, the "rich parents" trait makes more sense given the fact that her cousins' family took her in. For the second trait, I was thinking of extremely fashionable from the newly published "Adventurer's Armory". At 3rd level, I'm thinking that I'd have Alis take the heirloom weapon and prehensile whip traits in place for her feat choice (assuming she's able to get her father's weapon back roughly around then).
BTW, this would be the first PbP I've participated in although I've been following a few others so I'm reasonably familiar with PbP protocol. Lastly, I work 3rd shift (GMT-5) so I have the ability to post continuously throughout the night and early morning Mon-Thurs, and am generally up during the daytime on the weekend. Like Jeremiziah, I have a Droid and can access the forums from pretty much anywhere.
Email is michael at worldsunknown dot com should you need it.

Just a heads up, Talomyr, I'll either run a straight fighter, ex-noble...one of my favorite characters I've ever devised. Either that or a cleric of Cayden Cailean I put together for a PbP on here that died.
For the rest of you, keep the submissions coming! I like what I'm seeing so far, and I'm sad I won't get to bring you all along.

Deevor |

i too would love to play, I'm in a couple of games here, but they some are a bit quiet. I'll take a look at the Player Guide tonight and start thinking some stuff up. I'll change to a character post, when I've more an idea. As for posting, I can normally do it daily with a slow down over weekends, just to set expectations.

DM Berwick |

Why thank you for posting this Sully!
1) Human Ranger looking to get into the Sable Guard, whose neice has been abducted and all indicators point to Gaedren. Specializing in the Crossbow, and definately going for more of an urban feel.
2) Half-orc fighter whose blood courses with the unknown power. His beloved wife was murdered, and his only piece of information was that Gaedren somehow got ahold of her wedding ring. (This character would eventually go for eldritch knight, and is an attempt to prove my point that gish classes are unnecessary in a system that already provides for those types of concepts).
3) Human Cleric of Pharasma, whose father was murdered, and had to grow up quickly to take care of his younger siblings. He got his start as a mortician, and learned more and more about the faith from his dealings with the Church in the Gray District. He seeks out Gaedren to find out how he came to possess the only unique and recognizable possession of his father.
EDIT: Submitted the post before I was done.
Thank you for the oppertunity to be in the running, and I certainly look forward to hearing your decision on Monday (possibly), regardless, I am looking forward to reading about the future adventures for this AP.
As always,
Berwick

Talomyr, have you created a recruitment thread for your Council of Thieves or are you just hijacking Sully's?
I have a a dual-dagger wielding/throwing rogue (possibly halfling or tiefling) with an eye for shadow dancer (hardly original, I know, but something I've never actually gotten a chance to try yet). Would love to know what creation methods you prefer to see if the concept is doable.
Edit: and speaking of hijacking Sully's thread, any interest other than Sully in a colonize the New World Arcadia PbP?

"I've 'ad a tough life ya know. It ain't easy on da street and in da gutter. It don't help when yer strung up on Shiverjuice ee-ther, believe me. But I've been around and can tough it. But it killed me buddy Josten. Just a wee lad o' ten summers. That lad was golden! The only friend I had...(sob)...to push the Shiver on a wee boy is just evil! Its one matter for a grown' up dwarf like meself. But that...that's just rotten....no good rotten evil. So I said to meself.."Peety. You gotta find the flea-bitten rat who pushed the junk on de boy!" So I did me some investigatin' and found it was a rotten scumbag called Ghaedren (spit) that hooked me boy on the juice. An t'aint like the Fuzz'r gonna do jack squat about it though. Someone's gotta stop that no good douchebag and string him up to a gibbet himself! That someone'd be meself, mate. I'd be me!
I used a 20 point buy with two traits - one from the Player Guide I just read - and 150gp starting gear.. Looks like stiff competition, though! Have fun!

Can't speak for Sully's plans for this campaign, but the method he used for Kingmaker was the elite array + a single extra point on any of the stats.
@Sully- Kovellus Vossare (stole the name from another character, but it feels right) will be my CotCT character, pending your approval. Rough concept is up there ^^ in an earlier post, but i'll work on it more tomorrow. Alexander/Berenkor

Thanks for that tip, Kovellus. I guess I should wait until Sully tells us, what kind of build he is looking for before making adjustments. I can easily adjust the stats to fit the Elite array. It's always easier to take more goodies than to lose them, right? The concept will remain similar, though.

Lily D'Amico |

Sully, I'd be very interested, if you'll accept a PbP noob. I'll download the Player's Guide now and work something out at work tonight.
The plus side for me is, I have Internet Access at work and an Android device, so there's essentially no time that I cannot post.
-JM
After developing my concept, I quickly scrolled through the other posts, and was sad to see that this idea was (basically) already submitted, with a slightly different flavor. Nonetheless, I'm sticking to it, because I thought of it without outside influence, and it got me excited to play.
Not too long ago, Lily D'Amico was merely a young lass in love with - and loved by - a young man well above her station. Lily grew up in Midland, daughter to a jewelrey merchant of middling success named Marin D'Amico. Marin specialized in flashy baubles and alluring trinkets of all kinds, but he was especially known for a fine collection of rings. As Lily came of age, she began to exhibit the tall, thin stature and lusterous hair that had made her mother the apple of Marin's eye.
Late one afternoon, as the shop was closing for the day, a handsome young nobleman ventured up to the stand. He was clearly taken with Lily, a feeling which was immediately and wholly mutual. They struck up a long conversation, and as the evening drew near, he promised to return again. Clearly he was in love at first sight - he purchased and immediately donned a unique and expensive ring that Lily had drawn his attention to, made a deep knee, and left the shop.
As Lily closed up the shop for the evening, she thought (not for the first time) how glad she was that her father had trained her in the use of blades and the lay of the city, as she generally did not fear being in the shop alone, and had no concerns about navigating the few streets that would lead her to her Father's modest house. She secured her Curveblade and departed into the dusk.
Within minutes, Lily gasped in horror and dismay. Just ahead of her, the city guard was gathered around a body lying on the street, it's lifeblood smeared on the cobblestones around it. As Lily drew closer, she saw the handsome visage of her young nobleman, his pale, unmoving face a mask of anger and betrayal caught in the throes of death. The ring was missing, but there was no mistaking the identity of the man. Anguished, Lily moved away quickly, not wanting to hear a name attributed to the love that had been torn from her heart before it had a chance to fully blossom. She only noticed before she took her hasty leave that the newly purchased ring had been stolen by whoever had performed the vile deed.
Lily ran home, up to her room, and wept, saying nothing to her father about the troubling turn of events. "No use in worrying him," she thought.
A week later, Lily came to her father's shop in the afternoon, and immediately noticed the familiar ring back on it's stand. "Father," she asked Marin, "from whence did yon ring come back to us?"
"Why, funny you should ask, dear daughter. 'Twas Gaedren Lamm who sold it back to me just this morning..."
Marin took a step back, away from the fury that suddenly shone in his daughter's eyes.
---------------------------
In game terms, Lily is a Ranger, trained by her father in the use of the Elven Curveblade and various styles of Bow. She feels at ease within the confines of the city (Favored Terrian: Urban), and is intent upon punishing the man she sees as responsible for the death of the young nobleman (Favored Enemy: humanoid (human)).
If you're interested in the Crunch or in any additional information, feel free to let me know at jeremymillzz at gmail dawt cawm.
Like I said, I'm new to PbP but I've played tabletop since I was 10 (I'm 32 now). I follow your Kingmaker game with feverish interest, so it'd be a real delight to get in on this game. I'm in the Eastern Time Zone, if that matters, but I'm up at all hours.

I've created a recruitment thread for Council of Thieves. Character creation guidelines are in the thread.
As far as your New World Arcadia game, I am interested, just a bit concerned about becoming over-extended between Sully's Kingmaker, (and hopefully CotCT), Running CoT, and my RL home game. I assume you have a discussion thread where I might learn more?

Red Xanthem |

Hello,
I would like to submit Red Xanthem to the game. I will make a second character sheet as he was rolled up for a solo thread my brother and I are running, and he was rolled up with some home brew rules and used our own method of skill heavy play. so I would need to bring him down a bit, but I absolutely love the why this character plays. and would be happy to see him in a group.
(Rorse waves to Nazard)

Red Xanthem |

I would take the love lost trait for this game. this will be a tidy way to explain Red's lack of interest and usual avoidance in anything beyond a simple flirtation. Lamm Killed the wrong Tavern wench and he will pay soon.
I'm going to hold off on putting too much work into a suitable profile as you have quite the cast to choose from.

Alis Kirmoon |

After developing my concept, I quickly scrolled through the other posts, and was sad to see that this idea was (basically) already submitted, with a slightly different flavor. Nonetheless, I'm sticking to it, because I thought of it without outside influence, and it got me excited to play.
"Yes, it looks like a great many of us have suffered a lost love wherein this Gaedren fellow bears some manner of involvement. May Lady Luck guide your quest for answers and vengeance." Alis pauses, arching a slender golden eyebrow. "Perhaps if fortune favors us we shall find those answers together..."
Sully: Are you more inclined to recruit highly experienced PbPers or those who are involved in few/no existing PbPs? Just wondering since it seems many of the hopefuls are already playing in multiple active games...

Ravarath |

Hi Sully. If you are willing to take PBP newbies. Please consider Ravarath - an itinerant and penniless monk from Jalmeray. Fully stat'ed up on a 25 point buy with about 45GP base. I'm happy to change the crunch, reallocate skills, and whatnot to dovetail better with the group and the environment.
I know nothing about the adventure you are planning to run so if a monk is a poor 5th wheel... no worries and thanks for taking the time to consider me.
Thanks!
PS - I work from home so posting a few times a day would be no problem.

DM Sully |

Wow! I'm excited about the response here. It will probably take me longer than Monday to sort through all of these. Please see my Kingmaker discussion thread with regards to character generation, as I'll use the same methods here.
Thanks for all the replies, and I'll look through them and post a decision soon. As far as whether I'm looking for experienced, new, playing in five groups, no groups, or what have you, to be honest I'm just looking for a solid group that can post fairly regularly and really bring this campaign to life.
I'll try to pick the group by tomorrow, but worst case would be Tuesday or Wednesday. I'd like to actually start the game next weekend.
Keep the characters coming! :)

Alis Kirmoon |

Please see my Kingmaker discussion thread with regards to character generation, as I'll use the same methods here.
Alis casts Copypasta. ;)
Characters can be any of the core classes or races from the PFRPG book...
Ability scores will be generated using the elite array. You will have the following scores to assign as you see fit, but with a twist -
8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15
The twist is that you have one extra point to assign to any score that you wish.
Character wealth is determined as usual per the class. ... I'm a big proponent of the honor system, so I'll trust you guys on that.
Traits from the ... Player's Guide are encouraged, but not required.
Modifying Alis' ability scores to match and crossing my fingers. :)
