This saturday once again my players decided not to put any effort into the game, show any initiative or do anything other than roll some dice when asked.

There are two/three of them who are keen but the rest just don't seem interested anymore which is a shame because as a group we have stuck together for over thirty years.

As a result I'm going to stop gaming all together.

I'm in the process of sorting everything out and will either give away or put on ebay all my gaming stuff which after thirty years amounts to a ton of stuff.

I would rather give it away to people than sell it all I would ask is for postage and packing.

If anyone is keen for stuff keep an eye open here for when I set it up.
It will be Dragon, Dungeon, Imagine and White Dwarf mags. A complete collection of C'thulhu material, Traveller, Grimtooth's traps books old 1st and 2nd edition books and scenarios, fanzines such as Stormlord and Beholder everything.

Cheers.

Have you considered finding a new group instead? Seems a little drastic to quit entirely.

Man that's sad news...

Couldn't you just keep going with the 2-3 players + your goodself... small group gaming can be just as rewarding :)

Just seems a shame to throw in the towel on a hobby you've clearly loved, enjoyed [and invested time and money in] for 30+... because of [some] players apathy...

Don't get me wrong I'd LOVE to recieve some of the above [the mention of Imagine magazine brought a major reminisence smile on] but I reckon you've a few adventures in you yet hombre

That’s a pity Spacelard.

I’m sure you’ve thought this through, but I’ve been on the verge of giving up gaming a couple of times over the years for different reasons, but I’ve always ended up picking it up again (after a few months in one case and a year or more in another), and I’m glad I didn’t give all my stuff away in the meantime.

Would it be an option for you to hang onto it all for a couple of months and see if you still feel the same way? Or start a new game with the two or three in your group who still make an effort, leave the ones who are bringing you down out of things?

Actually, with a 30 year group, you might be over reacting. Have you tried talking to people about what has/has not changed?

  • Do people need a change of genre or system?
  • Does one or more of them want to instead have the group do something else for a bit, such as bowling, poker, etc. (i.e., have interests changed?)
  • Do people need a break? (i.e., too much real life at the moment?)

Take a moment and calm down before you do anything that you can't retract.

  • Yeah I agree, maybe it's time for a new group..or maybe they just need a brake from fantasy games. Though about a short hop though another system? Often that helps to recharge a bit

Not much chance of that happening where I live. It would be the ideal solution. As I said a couple of players are still really keen but at the moment I'm just feeling "Meh" about the whole thing.

I could run pbp games but I prefer real person interaction.
I'm still planning to keep my Runequest stuff as I still occasionally write for that but at the moment all the rest could go into a skip for all I care.

    EDIT
The laughable thing is I started running Pathfinder because that is what they told me they wanted to do.

Add all my Delta Green stuff to the list as well.

I agree with the others about not doing anything rash you may come to regret later.
I got out of RPing back when Magic became the in thing, but I never got rid of my stuff (other than my Birthright stuff when I needed some quick cash and I'm still bitter about that over 10 years later :/ ). Sit on it for a while. You may feel "meh" about it now, but that feeling could pass in a month or two and you'll hate yourself for getting rid of your stuff.

I'm with everyone here about not getting rid of your stuff. About ten or twelve years ago, I ended up giving all of my stuff (Lots of modules, Dungeon and Dragon magazines, boxed sets, 1st and 2nd ed with all of the goodies) to a friend to use to get a campaign going. Somehow during that time we fell out of touch and I wasn't motivated to get it back. I felt like I wasn't using it anyway. Now I really regret it.

We'd all love to get gaming stuff but is there any way to get it into the hands of future would-be gamers?

My suggestion is that if you are not interested you box it up, or put it away for one, maybe two years. If you dont get any interest in that time to have another go maybe it is time to give it away. But after 30 years a sudden ditch seems drastic.

or play some runequest for a while.

If only 2-3 people seem interested maybe take a month or two break then just play with them for a session or two, and play a mini campaign only with a wierd background that cannot function without thinking and interaction- like the Styes- I found breaking the group dynamic and changing some of my own DMing style to be very much the antidote to RPG lethargy.

On the other hand I am a hoarder of stuff and would love to get my hands on some of the stuff you mentioned.

While I am the biggest fan of old school game systems, it think it would be better to keep a fellow gammer within the fold.

Spacelard, by any chance do you live in the Tri State area ? If so you are welcome to join in any one of several game tables we have each week.

    Keep those dice rolling !

Maybe just let another player DM for a few months till you get your mojo back :-)

I run a Vampire game with essentially 2 players, games with small groups can still be great fun.

I agree with everyone else. Hang onto it all for a while, if you still feel the same way maybe then look to sell things.

I think you should at least try to look for a new gaming group before you make the decision to give everything away. Even where you live (wherever it might be), I'm sure there are people who play. If there weren't, you wouldn't have a gaming group to begin with.

I know that the Wizards of the Coast website has boards where you can find new gaming groups. You might also try www.meetup.com or Pen and Paper Games.

Personally, I like the community at Pen and Paper Games. I haven't ever had to look for a new group, but the people there are very friendly, and extremely passionate about gaming. You might give it a whirl.

    DUDE DON'T JUMP!!
seriously, I realize things may be bleh right now but propose a break from gameing all together.
Say hey I'm a little burned out right now how about a months downtime and do like I did go rideing or get involved in a non-gameing activity then when you come back to it you'll be amazed at how well you can create.
Barring that you can also look on craigs list in your area and under the pluetonic personal section ask for gamers. Offer to teach the game in the ad and wait for the replies. I have found some good folks that way. Course you can also meet some real tools too but hey good & bad are hand in hand.

If your serious about not gameing then box'em up for a year. I can't begin to express my regret over my darksun madness sale years ago.

Sorry to hear your experience is driving you away from the hobby altogether, but if you do decide to quit the game, I'd love to get at least the core Cthulhu book from you. I'd rather see you keep gaming, though.

Selling out of print stuff reminds me of the advice my mom gave me about selling land: "Son, don't ever sell land; the good Lord isn't making any more." Hang on to it, bud, you'll get your mojo back.

I would hold onto your stuff and just place it away for a rainy day. It is usually a long break and nostalgia that will get you back into it.

Unless you live on a boat, or other confined space, you should have room to store it.

I would hate for you to seel your RPG stuff and find out a few years later that you should have kept it. My suggestion is to keep it and take a break for a few months. Or look online.

OTOH, if you do get rid of it, I am interested.

P.S. - If you have a few players that still want to play, then KEEP THEM and still play. Try doing a city campaign or one shots. Have them run more than one character, or try another system. There are plenty of things that you can do with a small group.

~wistles innocently and backs away from this thread~ Who? Me? I am innocent! Honestly! I am!

I hear you, man. Listen, I've also been playing for 30+. I gave up gaming altogether a decade ago. I kept most of my books (for nostalgia reasons) but got rid of my old Dragon mags. My group broke up under bad circumstances and I was fairly certain, I'd never play again.

Fast forward to now... I'm playing again after a ten year hiatus and what I am kicking myself for is getting rid of those Dragon mags. I can't tell you what a joy it was for me to pull out my 1st Edition Monster Manual and all my 2nd Ed stuff when I stumbled on people I like who wanted to learn the game. Mind you, I'm playing 3.5 and Pathfinder now so my old books are 'useless'... but when I pop open those old books it is like pulling out a family photo album.

You may never play again - but the world changes and strange opportunities come upon you every once in awhile - so you just never know. If I were you, I'd pack those books and goodies away for awhile and see how you feel in a few years. Like me, your palms may get itchy to roll dice again and a new generation of players will come along and say "I've always wanted to learn how to play D&D? Could you show me?"

PS - if you DO decide to 86 your Dragon mags... if you've got the one with all the alternate alignment Paladins in it (Illrigger, etc.) SEND THAT BAD BOY my way... I LOVED that issue. :)

Good luck whatever choice you make.

This is so sad, Spacelard. It's almost sad enough to keep me from offering a good home to a copy of Libris Mortis, if you had it, didn't change your mind, and wanted to send it to me for the cost of shipping. Almost, but not quite. Hey, that's still pretty sad.

That's horrible. You shouldn't be trying to capitalize on the grief of someone else. Unless he decides to go through with it. In that case, DIBS ON MONSTER MANUAL II!!!

Just reiterating what others have said. Pack your toys in a box DON'T get rid of them. You'll be either kicking yourself or spending $$$ trying to re-buy the books you love in a few years time.

The poster who suggested a game that requires low numbers of players (Cthulthu, Chill, Vamp., perhaps even True20 or d6 Fantasy etc) and a couple of players who are there because they are having fun is a great idea. Even Pathfinder will be fine if you make your own adventure and avoid hack'n'slash. Warhammer Fantasy RP (1st/2nd ed) is also great for small groups. The party just has to get use to the concept of "running away" - oh and the DM letting them :)

Give yourself time to evaluate if role-playing is still your thing before doing anything with your books dude.

    Regards and luck,
    Stefan.

Clearly the best thing to do is put them all in a box and send them all to me.

I will 'store' them should you ever change your mind and want them back.

Hey, why do you have your fingers crossed...?

I'm in complete agreement with everyone here, pack it up, keep it. I took a 4 year hiatus myself, getting back into it when Pathfinder came along. Sold all my books cause I needed the money. Now I'm slowly trying to rebuild, and it sucks, especially since I have essentially 5 editions of the game to (re-)collect (Basic, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3.5, and now Pathfinder too).

But if you do decide to go through with it, and you have the Tome of Magic(2nd ed), Oriental Adventures (1st ed), or The Complete Ninja's Handbook, I'm more then willing to make a home for them.

I also recommend that you wait a bit before getting rid of your stuff. Around '97-98 I had a similar problem, couldn't find a group and needed the room my large AD&D 1 & 2 edition was taking up. Four or five years later I found decided to try again and found a group of players and needed to start from scratch. Of course, they were playing 3.5 by that time and I had to start from scratch anyway, but it took many years to replace the books I had gotten rid of.

Give it a year maybe even two.

    OTOH..:
If you decide to go through with getting rid of stuff, I have a lot of gaps in my Cthulhu collection and a few specific items I need for my AD&D collection.

I've spent a few hours packing stuff and even the other half, who I was sure would be glad for the room, has said keep it.

I'm still "Meh" about it so I'll sit on it for a bit and revisit. Chucking away thirty years worth of stuff would be a wrench even for me.

All of the C'thulhu/Delta Green stuff is amazing didn't realise how much I had of that.

D&D Deities and Demigods with Mythos and Elric bits made me feel all warm inside...

The original Unearthed Arcana (or TSR Polearm Special) made me bring up a little sick. But I forgot all the in game stupid quotes written into the cover "Crossone Plusbow Bolts" and "The pyramid is 30 squeet fair" two favorites.

I'm glad you've decided to at least wait a while. Those things are precious man. I'd give my left ear for my original copy of the 2nd edition PHB. When I got it, the front cover had been ripped off, and the rest of the book eventually disconnected from the back cover and the spine, but the pages were still all together, so I used some cardboard and duct tape to make my own cover. I don't even know what happened to that book.

Well, it was sounding like you'd failed your personal morale check. What you needed was a decent 8-1 leader, heck, even a 7-0 would suffice, to rally. Just be lucky we didn't send the commisar or you might be facing casualty reduction to a half-squad.
