This is exciting!

RPG Superstar™ 2010 General Discussion

Being new to the paizo forums, I am finding the RPG Superstar contest very exciting. I am sure it is partially due to my husband being in the top 32, but it is also because I feel as if I am learning a lot. My Dad and uncles played D&D when I was little and my Dad also tried to run a campaign for us when we were little, but I really didn't get reintroduced to it until my husband and I got together. He is now running a Dragonlance campaign for me, my 10-yo daughter, and 5.5-yo son.

Reading all of the top 32 items and their critiques has been really fun! It has gotten me really excited to do more on the campaign this weekend with the kids (though, personally, I am hoping my daughter never finds my husband's item since her turns are already sooo long with having a familiar and summoning ANOTHER animal). I am also just dying to see what kinds of monsters will be revealed at 4PM here.

Looking forward to poking around the forums and learning even more...

Welcome to the boards. Be careful though, they are habit forming.

Welcome to the boards, Allariah, and the best of luck to your husband.

Welcome, Allariah!

Thanks for the welcomes. I hadn't told the kids about the contest and did this morning. My precocious daughter got very excited and started telling me about her wonderous item idea... a potion that someone could drink that would turn them into anything they want. Look for her entry in about eight years!

A protean potion has potential.

Very cute! That's how we all got started, finding that sense of wonder when we were little kids. Welcome to the Boards, and best of luck to your husband.

This also makes me smile, because while my wife hasn't signed up on the boards yet (I hope she will so she can vote!), she did read the thread on my item. When I was editing my monster for 8th time, she started quoting Neil Spicer to me by name! (Neil is last years winner who has given us all a lot of great advice). It was this wonderful and wonderful sense of disconnect that two parts of my life were suddenly mixing where they never had before.

Very cool! The most help I can give my husband at this point is with proofreading really. My daughter also was critiquing my husband's monster already, but I figured I wouldn't give details on that yet! ha ha Good luck to you too, Jim! And maybe when your wife gets on here we should start a RPG Superstar Widows thread! LOL

Allariah, I too have joined the forums to support my boyfriend, Hydro. I have to say, I've been lurking on the boards for a few months, and enjoy (from the ethnographic perspective of a nerdy grad student) reading all about the gaming world, which my partner introduced to me about a year ago.

I've barely played PF or other versions of D&D, because we've had problems getting together a regular group, but Hydro has gotten me into all sorts of gaming (Pokemon, Settlers of Catan, Magic) and I can't wait until we have a regular game up and running. (I had to give up on my bearded dwarf cleric, the game just never happened!)

I'm really excited to vicariously be a part of this (as well as being so proud of him for making the top 32).

Ah, your boyfriend came up with the item that I can see my son (he is playing a drawf fighter) REALLY digging. He doesn't get the game much yet, but explosions and fire work for him. He also has been heard to say in the middle of battle, "Well, I am going to go over here so I can stand on this rug." I used to play Magic in college and we have gotten into Battlelore, Talisman, and now Stonehenge lately. Fun stuff. Good luck to your boyfriend!

Really?! I think this is officially the first time I've ever been quoted on anything. That's all kinds of awesome! Tip of the hat to your wife, Jim! Listen to her...errr, me! Ha! ;-)

It really happened.

She read the thread to see what people thought. Then she read my Round Two entry. She printed out your specific feedback, and drew my attention to where I wasn't quite understanding what I was being told. So I rewrote it.

Now as I write this, I realize I probably sound like a suck-up. Whatever, so be it if that's the case. :D

What happened is that thought I understood what you were explaining, but I fell into the same trap. My wife took me back to your post and made sure I was getting what you meant. "This Neil Spicer is trying to warn you about this." Obviously I can't explain in any more detail, but hopefully you'll understand when Round Two is up and visible to the public (and then I really won't be able to explain it because we'll be under gag order).

In a way, perhaps the knowledge that people are listening and acting on your advice is the best thank you we can offer.

Welcome to the forums Allariah. It's good to read about people playing with their kids. I gamed with my kids for a while and it was a hoot. When they got a little older they kind of lost interest but I've given them the bug. Hopefully they will pick it up again.

My daughter still thinks this is the RPG Stupidstar contest. "My daddy's a StupidStar!"

Yes...yes you are. ;-P

Spoiler:

Totally kidding, of course. I keep checking the nighttime sky for your star-filled constellation to appear (which I'm sure it will very soon).

Spoiler:

You're Taurus, right? Just want to make sure I'm looking for the right constellation... ;-)

You married a very smart lady, sir! You should listen to her all the time. And you can tell her I said that. ;-)

Spoiler:

Now I'm totally worried whether I gave valid advice or not.

Really?! You doubted the help you offered to all of us folks? Second to Clark in the help category (well... unless you go by word count. Clark is not as verbose as nspicer :)

Welcome to the boards Allariah & Dhamma and all those others.

That is awesome! My husband would probably like that better than when our 20 mo-old calls him by his first name!

Legendary Games, Necromancer Games

You are darn right this is exciting! In fact, its awesome!

I love this contest!

(you know, maybe if I stopped saying that so much I could actually convince them to pay me for this gig. Ah, that will never work. They already know I'm an idiot and will do it for nothing. So much for my strong negotiating skills).

Oh how I wish, Bill! I have to run the older two to swimming so will be waiting another two hours or so!!! The suspense is unreal even for me and I can't imagine for my husband who won't be home for another two hours after that probably...

This is that part I described before where people get all kinds of excited when they find out they made it to the next round and then get all wrapped up following along with the discussion of their wondrous item and commenting on everyone else's stuff. When, in fact, they should be focused in like a laser on the next assignment to make sure they put forward their best stuff to ensure they get to stay in the competition.

Then, after submitting their Round Two entry, the amount of time that passes between that point in time, plodding through the judges' offering their feedback, and then the entire week of voting and commentary from the general public...it's like water torture. To fill that time, that's when you should look to venture back into the threads from the previous rounds. You can burn off a lot of that nervous energy and stressful waiting around by staying engaged with that stuff then...instead of letting it distract you from the current round's assignment.

But, hey...

::shrug::

What do I know? ;-)

That's just my two-cents,

Dhamma is a fantastic editor. She also played Magic with me all day on the 19th to distract me from the contest and keep me from driving myself bonkers. :)

RPG Superstar is awesome! I know that's easy for me to say, being in the top 32, but even if I weren't I'm positive I would still be having fun talking about people's items. I ignored it the first two years, but then spent hours crawling through the archives and wishing I'd been around to take part in them.

If this is true, and he is a five year old who loves explosions, then I have done my job.
