Feint: You can use Bluff to feint in combat, causing your opponent to be denied his Dexterity bonus to his AC against your next attack. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + your opponent’s base attack bonus + your opponent’s Wisdom modifier. If your opponent is trained in Sense Motive, the DC is instead equal to 10 + your opponent’s Sense Motive bonus, if higher. For more information on feinting in combat, see Chapter 8.

When feinting against a nonhumanoid you take a –4 penalty. Against a creature of animal Intelligence (1 or 2), you take a –8 penalty. Against a creature lacking an Intelligence score, it’s impossible. Feinting in combat does not provoke attacks of opportunity.
With the Improved Feint feat, you can attempt a feint as a move action.
I don't see anything there requiring your opponent to be in any particular space. I'd be in favor of a house rule requiring the opponent to be within 30'. Anything farther away, and your opponent probably can't see your fine-motor Bluff skills well enough to register.
There's a large skein of threads on this messageboard about feint, and Bluff in general. (Can illusory critters feint? Can invisible characters feint? And so forth. I don't believe those questions are germane to your query, though.)

-Do you need to be threatening an opponent to use feint, or can you do it from a short distance away? The Core Rulebook is pretty vague on this point.

Based on this it's usable from a distance but, only causes your opponent to loose his dexterity bonus agents your next MELEE attack. That attack has to be used within the next turn.

Hmm... is it just me, or does this open the door to 'Feint-and-charge' - combos? (which, I admit, strike me as rather silly)
Could be useful for a wizard(or other pure caster) though with the right feat selection - improved and greater make it a move action, and last till the start of your next round. Help the rogue chop that dude up.
Umm... how? The Target is denied its Dex bonus against the Feinter's next Melee attack, not the ones from his friends...

Greater Feint (Combat)
You are skilled at making foes overreact to your attacks.
Prerequisites: Combat Expertise, Improved Feint, base attack bonus +6, Int 13.
Benefit: Whenever you use feint to cause an opponent to lose his Dexterity bonus, he loses that bonus until the beginning of your next turn, in addition to losing his Dexterity bonus against your next attack.
Normal: A creature you feint loses its Dexterity bonus against your next attack.
