Weekly Poll #7: What D&D setting would you most like to see converted to Pathfinder?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

1 to 50 of 105 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

This week's poll is only for informative interest. Due to propriety and licensing rights it is completely unlikely that any of the settings would or could ever be "Pathfinderized". If for some reason a miracle happened (such as if Hasbro became annoyed at the decrease of revenue from certain business units, and they sold off said business units and/or their intellectual property), then what pre-Golarion setting would you most like to be roleplaying in, under the PFRGP rules?

This week's poll is located here:
www.pathfinderportal.com/poll.html

Past polls can be found at the bottom of the page.

Future polls suggestions are welcome. Email me here with your suggestions or just post in this thread.

(By polling these settings I in no way mean to infer that Golarion is an unsatisfactory setting. I personally am quite enjoying the Golarion setting).

DRAGONLANCE WOOOOOOOO.............

ahem, now that I've got that out of my system, Golarion rocks.

No Mystara? Now, I am sad.

"Nogard" from Dragon #96. It was awesome!

or how about none of the above?

Dark Archive

I suspect that shoving Kara-Tur and Rokugan together torpedoed the chance that of that getting any votes. Fans of one setting don't necessarily love the other...

I picked Al-Qadim, not because I want them to rewrite Al-Qadim, but because I would like to see some of the amazingly evocative stuff put into Al-Qadim find its way into Qadira and Greater Kel.

Similarly, I wouldn't want a conversion of Spelljammer, or Kara-Tur, or Rokugan, but to have some of the most inspiring and wonder-inducing bits of creativity from those settings find their way into the design that goes into Golarion's outer planets and Tian lands.

If I wanted 'Pathfinder Al-Qadim' or 'Pathfinder Kara-Tur' or 'Pathfinder Realms 2E (pre Time of Troubles and Spellplague)' or 'Pathfinder Spelljammer' or 'Pathfinder Oerth,' I've got everything ever written for those settings anyway.

The Scarred Lands, from Sword & Sorcery. For realz, yo.

Ravenloft (Mistfinder) baby!

The Exchange

Dragon Lance would be sweet!

Ravenloft could be interesting if they got rid of some of the inbalances such as the save vs suck effects of maddness and fear. Plus not reducing all of the magic classes except evocatiion into utter uselessness.

Shadow Lodge

Damnit. Again, all I see on that link is past polls. Is there any way to use a different system for this?

I have no idea what the options are so I'm just tossing out ideas. Tied for #1 are Dragonlance and Ravenloft.

I could also go for Scarred Lands, if that's an option.

Greyhawk (#3) would be cool and possibly better than Galorian. Yes, I really said that.

Monte Cook's WoDprobably #4.

Ptolis #5

#6 would be absolutely anything what-so-ever that did not contain any of the following: Mystra, "the Weave" [rolls eyes], Eleminister, Lightning Rails, Dragonmarks, Air Ships (unless it actually is Final Fantasy), Feywild, or Chosen of Mystra. In laymen's terms, no Forgetable Realms of 100% generic and no Craperron, and I doubt 4E generic setting is up for votes.

D20 Modern may be cool, but than again, most of the things I liked about it involved it not being D&D OGL. Sort of.

Dark Sun, Planescape, and the other settings I don't think need to be converted as much as updated storyline-wise.

Aww, why wasn't this one multiple choice? Al-Qadim, Dark Sun, Planescape, Ravenloft...

I voted for Spelljammer on the assumption that it would generally get less love than the others. :D

Bloody awesome, man. That is probably the coolest thing I have seen on these forums. Kudos.

Al Qadim. Never happen of course, but I'd settle for an Arabian Nights themed book along the same lines which I could borrow ideas from. It fits well into a game centered around a European feel where the Middle East is the height of mystery and far off lands. Kara Tur would be a nice second of course...

Duh, Planescape.

Planescape would be excellent to revitalize, though I do enjoy undead settings so Ravenloft would be my second pick.

Forgotten Realms.

I said Greyhawk because I always felt it got shafted.

Edit: That said, I can't wait to see the Tia Xian book ;-)

Voted Planescape but do try to get Birthright pretty please too!

Forgotten Realms feels unnecessary imho because it's been used so much already I don't think it would add anything. There's plenty of "room" to expand other settings.

I don't want to rain on anyone else's campaign setting parade, but I'm quite content that this is unlikely to happen, and I'd've voted "None of the above" had that been a poll option.

I'd like the next Pathfinder setting release to be another slice of Golarion, preferably one geographically contiguous with the Inner Sea region. Tien Xia (sp?) and Vudra, or the Roof of the World and its borderlands.

Scarab Sages

Voted for Spelljammer.

I like Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms but Paizo is doing Golarion and its as good (and in some ways better supported already) so I don't really need two campaign worlds. The planes are being detailed already. There's going to be an oriental setting. There's an arabian themed place already.

Ravenloft I liked as a module and though I used the demi-planes I never thought it was great for an extended campaign.

Spelljammer though is unique and fun and really should be done right. I always thought it was an idea with great potential but only semi-good execution.

Eberron.

A Campaign Setting where Good and Evil are not clearly defined, where Orcs were the champions which saved the world millennias ago from a cosmic extraplanar invasion, where a church which preaches good and tolerance has a past of mass-genocide, where an entire nation is dominated by a race of enlightened rulers which are in reality demons in disguise, and where one of the most tragic figures - a creature whose birth should have brought peace among two races, Dragons and Elves - became the last survivor of a needless purge and became one of the plot masterminds of the world in order to obtain her vengeance. Oh, and don't forget the Almighty Lord of Blades, who is seen by most as a dangerous madman who wants to enslave the creatures of flesh - but maybe he is only trying to unite his former enslaved warforged fellows into an idea of a nation, and is there a stronger cohesive idea than the hate against the former slavers ?

But this is a dream that can only come true in a non-formalized campaign adaptation, sadly...

Up Cerilia! Up Birthright! Up Taldor! Huzzah!

I'm not really sure why you can't see the poll, but I would suggest going to my Polldaddy poll history page, which includes the current poll. You might be able to access the poll this way.

I'm really not familiar with either setting, other than having seen their respective source material. I remember reading that one of the settings replaced the other in the D&D Oriental Adventures line.

I got the impression that they had some basic similarities, but I interpret from your disapproval of the two being combined into 1, that perhaps my impression is most incorrect.

As for votes, I suspect that if someone feels strongly that their favorite setting out of the list is either Kara-Tur or Rokugan, that they will vote for it regardless. I guess now, a vote for that category is more for theme, than it is an actual setting. However, if there is a large amount of voters for that category, then for information collection purposes, I would be happy to post an addendum poll querying the support for them separately.

Vote for Al-Qadim!... Or the Yak-Men will get 'ya!

Voted Dragonlance---awesome setting, but only because there was no Mystara **sniff**

Honestly I'd love to see the Iron Kingdoms updated to Pathfinder, but that isn't likely, nor is it on the list. So, I went with Spelljammer which is probably about as equally unlikely.

Greyhawk

Darksun (was the first setting I played propper D&D in, still my all time favorite)

Eberron (basically what the Wraith said)

Ptolus (would be easiest as all it is is one city that needs to be relocated somewhere in Golarion)

Iron Kingdoms (I never got the chance to get into this, and the PDFs are too expensive)

Well, technically there is. Anyone who chooses not to vote, I will assume does not care :)

DitheringFool wrote:

In truth there are about 30+ published settings for D&D (Including those other than TSR/WotC). Rather than list all of them, I decided to only list the one's I see most frequently talked about in "Will we ever see this setting in Pathfinder" threads. (Perhaps I should have included Mystara?) Oh well.

The poll is only querying interest in the listed settings. For those that have a favorite setting that is not on the list... I guess they don't get to vote. Of course, that doesn't stop them from listing their favorite settings in this thread which has also been informative.

The Wraith got it right, of course.

That being said, this poll sadly is more a case of "what's your favourite campaign setting" than anything else. Also, screw conversion... I'd just love to see new licensed product produced for 3rd edition that I could run either with 3.5e raw or PFRPG rules. Eberron didn't have long enough a lifespan before 4e happened.

Birthright and Planescape.

Liberty's Edge

I wish Paizo would/could license Spherewalker, Greg Stolze's setting for the Everway game by Jonathan "WTH is Erik Mona?" Tweet.

It was SO cool, and now you can't even find a copy. It's got to be one of the top "brilliant but cancelled" settings in RPG history.

Liberty's Edge

I thought Katapesh and Legacy of Fire was a big nod to Al Qadim. Wasn't it?

Small nod.
But the rest of the Kelish and Vudrani Empires have yet to be covered. :-)

Iron Kingdoms. I would love to see that setting getting the detailing that Paizo is doing for Golarion. I wish it was still in print and had more support from Privateer Press instead of them focusing primarily on Warmachine and letting IK rot.

I would also like to see 7th Sea.

Weylin wrote:

I really liked the 7th Sea setting, but I also find quite a few similarities between that setting (I think it was Theah) and Golarion.

I was not aware of there being such as strong following of Planescape fans as there appears to be. Right now it is leading the votes.

Greyhawk is no surprise especially given 2 factors: #1 - based on the results of a past poll, there are a lot of mature players playing Pathfinder (and by mature I mean old farts like me who have been playing the game in excess of 20 years), and #2 - You can take the player out of Greyhawk (via stop publishing material for it) but you can't take Greyhawk out of the player.

Greyhawk is weird this way... in a cult following sort of weird. Fans just don't want to give it up, as is being reflected in the polls. I was certainly a huge fan of GH, and I almost completely ignored everything to do with the Forgotten Realms because of the devout faith I had for GH.

Alas, I was able to move on with roleplaying life and explore other settings. Aside from perhaps Dark Sun, I really had no "favorite setting" which I always wanted to roleplay in. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I really liked the 7th Seas setting, but almost found that it paralleled our history a little to close at times. This I think is where Golarion has really done well. It introduces familiar cultures to us, but with unique histories and varied beliefs. The little flame that still burned somewhere within me for GH, has now been extinguished. Golarion now has my full and undivided attention.

I'm a fan of the Forgotten Realms (not the 4E mutant), Eberron, Song of Fire and Ice, Birthright, Ravenloft ...

These all have some place in Golarion IMHO (in a small way, they are around and the athmosphere of them can be recreated in this setting), but it was the Planescape that got my vote ^^

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

As far as favorite settings on the list, I have to go with Greyhawk and Planescape, but I couldn't vote as I am perfectly fine with running PRPG in Golarion or a homebrew.

That depends entirely on how you choose to run it my friend.

For me, I roleplay it the same way I'd roleplay a spot in history, pick a specific spot, set up all the pieces, and let things develop as they will. Odds are very good that things will happen very differently from how they did the first time.

Heck, I saw a dragonlance campaign that a friend of mine was running the same way I mentioned. He's been running it for 5 years now, and they've gone so far off the beaten path his Krynn has evolved into something you practically wouldn't recognize from the metaplot.

I'm just glad I've been lucky enough to guest play at his table a few times, it's been a ton of fun.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2013

I loved Planescape, and I would consider adding that to my list of games to run before I die.

But, Golarion already has a loose framework you could put Spelljammer into. That would be an awesome, swashbuckling game that would have a lot of Pathfinder style. I think it's the best option to grow the game.

This means you need to chuck out nine-tenths of the published DL material, however, since it's tied so closely to the metaplot that even small changes require complete rewrites. The setting just didn't have any room to make it your own, and a number of basic assumptions that were very difficult to change while still using any of the non-crunch material.

I guess so, sure as hell didn't make the game I'm talking about any less fun or involving.

My friends and I have been playing in Greyhawk for a long time... and we like the idea of a shared world campaign... Too bad WotC always gave it the shaft. But, I could care less, because that gave me that much more freedom to make it my own.

Paizo gave Greyhawk a lot of love over the years with some great articles though!

The game you were talking about was a homebrew that didn't benefit from being a DL game save that it tripped the nostalgia/I'm-familiar-with-that! triggers.
