I'm pretty lenient. Ability scores are 4D6, drop the lowest and arrange as you like. Role two or three sets of stats and pick the best if you like, I like relatively powerful characters.
As for books. Anything from the core books, complete series and eberron books is permitted. Anything else, just ask. My knowledge of d20 products is good, but there's a lot of it out there.
Just play something you can be excited about and that you think is cool. An old favorite or something you've been reading about lately, whatever. Just go with something you'll enjoy playing and that you think would be fun in this kind of game.
I recommend the Eberron stuff and it's all easily accessible to those of you savvy with the interwebs. Warforged juggernauts, Shifter Druids and Master Investigators (awesome social character anyone?)are all pretty sweet choices from the Eberron line.

I'm not as familiar with Eberron as I'd like, but I've been dying to play a Warforged since I first picked up Races of Eberron. A Warforged druid wouldn't be easy to engineer, probably, but being able to wildshape into mechanical versions of animals would so be worth it(maybe they're effigies from Complete Arcane instead of animals?). Is there still a spot open? Any suggestions for a Warforged naturalist playing against type?

warforged druids are doable. The race is organic(90%) and made mostly of live wood with stone and metal making the +2 AC plating. The armor feats other then iron wood and darkwood do not allow you to use your ablitys. so keep normal or use one of them two.
Also ya keep your AC and immunity's while wildshaped. But your form can look 100% normal.
sorry for the threadjack.

I believe there's a feat in Races of Ebberon that gives the warforged darkwood plating instead of metal plates, letting you actually use those Druid abilities.
Oh, and I'm interested.

Sweet! I was thinking Gardener was a typical model given orders to maintain an estate. He continued to do so, even after the residents died and plants overtook the buildings. If that's acceptable, I'll roll up a character and post the sheet on Myth-Weavers.
Edit: Stat roll1,Stat roll2,Stat roll3...wow, so much for a powerful character. Yeesh.

If you want to play a warforged druid, go for it! That sounds like an amazing character idea! You could get some really neat roleplaying mileage out of the idea of a machine that's embraced the natural world after becoming sentient :D

Stat Generation Update:
Roll your sets of 4d6 until you get at least one 18 and one dump score (ie. 9 and below).

It took a while, but I finally managed it. Here's the sheet for Gardener: link.
Backstory: In the days following the decline of his masters' estate, Gardener attempted to continue routine maintenance without supervision or proper supplies, even consulting the long-decayed bodies of his deceased master and mistress to no avail, but all fell to ruin and his purpose gave way to fascination. He could not comprehend the raw power of the natural world as it reclaimed the structures, roots and vines choking and crushing the isolated mansion, animals and vermin colonizing and undomesticating its interiors.
Over time, Gardener's curiosity replaced his duty, until one day he abandoned his futile landscaping regiment to follow a deer deeper into the Eldeen Reaches. The animal was strangely indifferent to his presence and he followed for many weeks, observing it at a distance in the business of its daily life, watching it feed, socialize, and eventually birth its young. He remained still for periods so long that birds and small animals mistook him for a tree.
When a predator wolf claimed one of the young fawns as a meal, Gardener felt strangely unsettled and followed the wolf as he had the pregnant doe. In this manner, he became accustomed to the life cycles of the Eldeen Reaches that his innate desire to maintain the landscapes of his owner demanded that he do likewise for the forest. As Gardener tended trees wounded by lightning strikes and protected animal populations from unnatural and excessive predation, he began to notice strange figures watching him in the night as he watched over the woods.
Through his daily maintenance, Gardener had wandered into the Twilight Demesne and the fey court took an interest in him. The dryads in particular were amused by the unnatural construct's clumsy attempts to protect the natural order and offered advice when their spirits were high and pranks when they found him tedious. Through their light-hearted training and reinforcement, Gardener became a true druid, initiated into the order by a Greensinger Elf who had to imbibe a generous amount of wine before she could complete the ceremony.
With a single shovel worn over time into a spear, the Warforged druid Gardener has ventured into the wider world, continuing his exploration of nature, his growing fascination for the different animals and ecosystems of Eberron drawing him to new territories.

I have GIMP, which should be able to open the file.
Great, GIMP will work fine. Fantastic character. Bonus 100XP for the back story and promptness :)
I'll be handling the XP and Treasure here: http://www.epicwords.com/campaigns/423
Create an account and join the campaign. There'll also be bonus XP for character journals and other things that you guys put into this.

For the GM
Basic Background
He woke up and discovered that an ornate mystical symbol pained over his right shoulder (aberrant mark). He then stood up and walked away from the battlefield alone towards Sharn.
Many times thereafter he attempted to go back to Cyre but the great foggy barrier surrounding Cyre defeats his efforts.
Dragonmarked, the Eberron Supplement, recommends that the DM allow the taking of aberrant mark as a bonus feat if the character can expect a consistently hostile reception from the community.

I created an account but it says I need a passcode to join. If that's not something you want to give out publicly, my email is charlatans.web at gmail dot com.

STR 12, DEX 16, CON 16, INT 10, WIS 15, CHA 10
Uh, is that close enough to what you intended? I'm getting sick of rolling stats...

Ok, we're full up. Chris Mortika and nightflier are in, make up some characters, guys. I've created a thread in the pbp forum and will begin posting adventure content once some more character backgrounds are sorted out. We're starting with the Forgotten Forge, which is a prologue from the setting book.

If I may ask, why are we using Epic Words for the ooc stuff? Wouldn't a thread in the discussion forum do?
Oh, and I settled on a Favored Soul.

Radavel, I'm not interested in re-casting Lucienne at this time. I think the concepts behind the character still have unplayed potential, but she has a heavy backstory, and I don't want to try to run her in a campaign already devoted to exploring something else.
Davi, I'm interested in developing a sort of investigative attorney (using the bard class). Would you be game for coordinating our characters' backgrounds?
Do we have any arcane casters (other than, perhaps, this bard I'm developing?)

Well, I've got six years of generic investigating sitting in my backstory, so it should be easy enough to do.
We don't have any arcane casters right now, but since we're probably not going to have a rogue until third level, I don't think this party is going to have the most standard configuration.

All right:
The following isn't secret, but likely of interest only to the DM and Davi:
I've been intrigued with the challenge of designing an attorney in D&D for a while, and it seems to fit best in Eberron. I'm imagining someone who's conversant with the law, skilled at reading people, outmaneuvering opposing counsel, and winning over juries. (That's Knowledge (law), Sense Motive, Bluff, and Diplomacy.) Davi, do any of those overlap with the areas you want your PC to master?
To work as an adventurer, the character needs a sponsor who would send him out to investigate areas of interest and interview people. I'm thinking either a local government (Are we starting in Sharn?) or else one of the Dragonmarked houses. Do either of you have any suggestions?
He's likely human, although half-elf, changeling, and kalashtar are options. (If kalashtar, he' would probably be a psion or a skulk, rather than a bard...)
Thoughts?

We've got a name and stats.
Strength 11
Dexterity 12
Constitution 12
Intelligence 16
Wisdom 11
Charisma 18.
So, we probably won't worry too much about his Sense Motive....

Gak! We have a lawyer on our team!
Sure, Chris! Consider...
Later, Lucien becomes a mercenary and bounty hunter, hence, his numerous brushes with the law. You have on occassion retained Lucien's services to protect client or track down a suspect or witness.
As counsel, you will now that Lucien bears a dragonmark. Of what kind you are not sure but you have suspicions. You fear that Lucien has been approached by House Tarkanan (organized crime) and that he will accept their invitation.
How's that so far?

Well, Thediar is fairly young as lawyers go. He's been in Sharn, and involved with various scams, for a while, but he wouldn't be acting as a barrister before last winter. Nonetheless, he might well have hired someone like Lucien to act as unaffiliated muscle when he needed it.
Also, Lucien falling in with ... that organization ... is potentially a problem, but read the first paragraph about the house, on Sharn, page 154, to see how that house is dealing with Boromar Clan, the major organized-crime-family-going-legit that retains Thediar.
Just how "dark" is Lucien? (Thediar keeps his own nose clean, and he represents a variety of Boromar operations, most of whom are legitimate business ventures. Even his work within the criminal side of the Boromar Clan is superficially above-board. He advises and represents smugglers and fences, not assassins or thieves.)
