Tome of Horrors

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

In many Pathfinder-Modules and Adventure Paths are references to the Tome of Horrors. Can I buy it anywhere as an e-book? I cannot find it at paizo.com.

Thank you for helping!

Hi Tim,

Here's a link to where you can purchase it from DriveThru RPG Tome Of Horrors. It's a fantastic book - I've linked to the revised (3.5) version, but just double-check as there are two versions out there (3.0 and 3.5).

As far as I know, the original is out of print and horribly rare. Luckily, Paizo has partnered with the publisher to reprint it updated to Pathfinder RPG rules. I don't recall when it will release however.

Sovereign Court

The 3.5 version was a free download for Free RPG day a year or two ago.

Dark Archive

Also, IIRC many of the creatures will be reprinted in the Pathfinder Bestiary.

You should also check the sequels, Tome of Horrors II and III ! These are some of the finest monster books out there.

Scarab Sages

along with the Advanced Bestiary by Green Ronin.

I would say it will be awhile since as far as I know Necro has not started on it. Only said they planed to do it once the PFRPG was out.

Thank you guys! I´ve just bought it. II already had volumes II and III, only the revised first volume was missing.

... and the Book of Fiends, by Green Ronin as well.

ToHr, AB and BoF that's the holy trio of non-WotC monster books. You can't go wrong with them !

Yep, my best Free RPG get ever, even trumping Paizo adventures.

Sovereign Court

Green Ronin's Advance Bestiary is the best money I've spent on a "monster" book, heck, maybe ANY book outside the core three.

Yep -- gotta love those templates! :)

EDIT: I wonder if the good folks at GR and Necromancer would publish those books for PF RPG?

Green Ronin seems to have gone their own way with lots of irons in the fire, but if there was one more company I could add to the registry, it would be them.

I echo that! Certainly a must have monster book. Wish they would update to Pathfinder and add a few more volumes!

True, but as I recal they plan on puting all their 3.5 stuff avaiable on LuLu as print on demand. Things change of course and those plans may have been droped but as I understand it they'll be avaiable.

Slightly changeing the subject about 3pp supporting Pathfinder, in one sense I'm glad its a lot fewer then 3rd. Yeah we might not get some of the best compaines out their right now doing anything for it, but that means less glut. For me the glut issue in the heyday of 3.5 was poor product but too much good product. Rember Paizo is putting out a lot of stuff every month. I think they might be putting out the most product of any company right now.

In any case glade you like Tome, its one of my fav as well. I never updated to 3.5 but really I'm not one for every detail and I've never had issues with 3, 3.5 or 3.p working together. issues do come up, but that just takes a little checking, the core of the critter is the the same.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Tome of Horror and Advanced Bestiary are both crazy awesome.

Here's how crazy awesome they are:

Tome of Horrors has the Wolf-In-Sheep's-Clothing.

Does your 3.5 Monster Manual have the Wolf-In-Sheep's-Clothing? NO. GET OUT OF MY OFFICE WITH THAT NOISE.

So you got your Wolf-In-Sheep's-Clothing. Advanced Bestiary has templates that will SET IT ON FIRE.

YOU HAVE A WOLF-IN-SHEEP'S-CLOTHING AND IT IS ON FIRE. YOUR CAMPAIGN IS RICHER FOR IT.

Buy Tome of Horrors and Advanced Bestiary today. You'll be glad you did.

(I've never actually combined the two products, but now I think I'm going to have to see just how insane(and cool) things can get)

You might want to add on the Book of Templates from Silverthorne Games. It's probably the third best monster book out there, and gets almost as much use in my games as the Advanced Bestiary. I think you can still find print copies here and there, though it was published in dead tree by Goodman Games.

It'll let you do things like a Deep One Hypermitotic Flaming Wolf-in-Sheep's-Clothing

I've heard a lot of people say that Tome of Horrors I, II and III are great, but can anyone tell me where they excell? Is this something I should try out (if I can obtain it) and why?

GRU

I only have the first on but it was chock full of monsters that never made the cut to 3rd edition from second, they do have a very second edition feel to them too and are very creative.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

They're all pretty awesome in the monster catagory.

Some creatures build on one another. Inphidians appear in all three, and Tome III has different Orc Breeds.

Me too. Green Ronin rules. I had a great time running Freeport and I recall in those days GR being the only RPG company to offer free stuff on their site.

I will mention a few other nice monster books from my vast collection.

If you like Advanced Bestiary get the Deluxe Book of Templates and Monster's Handbook.

If you like Tome of Horrors III I recommend Creature Collection III: Savage Bestiary

I have also enjoyed the Beast Builder by Expeditious Retreat Press; and of course the Monsternomicon I and II by Privateer press.

Now I go back to working on the Book of Monster Templates for PFRPG

If you take requests, please please PLEASE make "elemental" and "alignment" templates, like those from the Scarred Lands "Strange Lands: Lost Tribes" book. Fire template, water template, air, earth, axiomatic, anarchaic, ice, electric, etc etc etc.

We were taking requests from our preorder customers, until this month, when we finalized the line up.

One of the things we did want to do was bring NEW and original templates to the game.

if your interested though you can find 2 FREE PREVIEWS at the paizo store (and you can preorder a print and pdf copy at ritepublishing.com)

What I think you will find most interesting is preview #2 the Entropy-infused creature template which covers (Ash, Dust, Salt, and Vacuum)

Are you telling us that you made a nod to the Demi-,Para- and Quasi- elemental planes from the good old Planescape days, because if yes, then you have a sale here ?

If I could say that and not get sued then yes I would say that.

Since I don't wish to thread jack; you can find me over HERE
