I was a big fan. He took the idea of a bunch of hero tropes and basically set out to show that he could make a good story out of it by embracing the stereotypes, and I thought he did. The thing I liked best about his stories, though, was the warmth of interpersonal dynamics and relationships. He made you feel like these were old friends and you were sitting around the fire with them every time, like you had never left.
Somewhere a little blue orb is shedding a tear... :(

I remember when the Belgariad first came out. My English teacher actually reccommended them to me (Thanks Mr. Hennessey wherever you are!). I went on to loan my copies to several others, and thus the Belgariad goodness was spread, although one friend left book four on a beach in Spain somewhere :(.
Though I didn't read many of his novels after that, that series will always have a special place in my heart. Best of luck in your next adventure David, we shall remember you fondly ...

Fantasy author David Eddings has sadly passed away, aged 77, last night.
AUUUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHH!!!
=(
Wow. First, I hadn't accepted he was that old. Second, man did I enjoy the Belgariad. While it was a little too cliche, those cliches helped you get into that "comfortable" feel. You expect the protagonists to act a certain way, and you're delightfully relieved when they do. Rest in peace, we'll all be there soon enough.

I had no idea he was that old! (SHould have known, But the Belgariad only came out in the '80's!, but I Guess I hadn't paid enough attention to those forewords and afterwords!!) :(
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of his books. But I think I like the Sparhawk ones the bestest.
RIP Mr. Eddings. God bless you and all of your family at this time.

While I didn't much like his most recent series (The Elder Gods, I think it was called), I was a rather large fan of the Elenium/Tamuli and the Belgariad/Mallorean. He done good with Althalus too; Althalus and Emmy was one of the few moderately believable romances I've ever read about. He was good at taking stereotypes and making them his own in such a way as made for some truly wonderful stories. He will definitely be missed.

I just bumped into this sad news! :(
I remember reading the Pawn of Prophesy in the 1980's while also brain storming with what to do with the BECMI edition of D&D - and I ended up creating my own campaign world modelled upon the general flavour of the Belgariad setting after reading the whole series. I still have both, the books by Eddings, and my maps for D&D... :)
David Eddings, sad to hear of your passing. Thank you so much for taking me and many others on those voyages in your worlds! RIP
