David Eddings passes away

Dark Archive

Fantasy author David Eddings has sadly passed away, aged 77, last night.

Linky.

I have both loved and loathed David Eddings' work at different points, but I respect what he has done. For my part, he will be missed. The Eternal Man has been laid to rest.

My god I loved the Belgariad, Mallorean and the Sparhawk series.

I'm stunned, I hold him on the same level as Gary Gygax and Dave Arnesson for the effect his books have.

A sad day indeed.

Wherever you are I hope you and your wife know you are sorely missed!

I highly enjoyed some of his books, sad day indeed

I was a big fan. He took the idea of a bunch of hero tropes and basically set out to show that he could make a good story out of it by embracing the stereotypes, and I thought he did. The thing I liked best about his stories, though, was the warmth of interpersonal dynamics and relationships. He made you feel like these were old friends and you were sitting around the fire with them every time, like you had never left.

Somewhere a little blue orb is shedding a tear... :(

I remember when the Belgariad first came out. My English teacher actually reccommended them to me (Thanks Mr. Hennessey wherever you are!). I went on to loan my copies to several others, and thus the Belgariad goodness was spread, although one friend left book four on a beach in Spain somewhere :(.

Though I didn't read many of his novels after that, that series will always have a special place in my heart. Best of luck in your next adventure David, we shall remember you fondly ...

The Belgariad sucked me into fantasy quicker than anything I've ever read! I loved the simple, yet complex nature of the tale. Godspeed, Mr. Eddings and may you and your wife find many, many adventures in the next life.

Scarab Sages

I loved all of the Sparhawk books.

RIP neighbour.

Sovereign Court

I have plenty of pleasant memories of reading his books.

I really enjoyed the character of Silk in the Belgariad, and the whole idea of the Church Knights in the Elenium.

Thank you and rest in peace Mr. Eddings.

Man- this turning into a lousy week.
The Eternal Man walks where we cannot yet follow.

Yet another author passes on. Bummer. I liked Edding's stuff.

(Robert Jordan too, not so long ago.)

Silver Crusade

I loved the Sparhawk series. RIP, Mr. Eddings and thank you.

AUUUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHH!!!

=(

Wow. First, I hadn't accepted he was that old. Second, man did I enjoy the Belgariad. While it was a little too cliche, those cliches helped you get into that "comfortable" feel. You expect the protagonists to act a certain way, and you're delightfully relieved when they do. Rest in peace, we'll all be there soon enough.

Yes, the Belgariad holds a special place in my heart, even if I probably couldn't read it now. RIP.

RIP Mr Eddings

I actually would have loved to see a tv version of the Belgariad but that I guess is another pipe dream!

Sad day for us all; brought me a lot of joy as I loved his work. I feel we are diminished as a people with his passing.

I had no idea he was that old! (SHould have known, But the Belgariad only came out in the '80's!, but I Guess I hadn't paid enough attention to those forewords and afterwords!!) :(

I have thoroughly enjoyed all of his books. But I think I like the Sparhawk ones the bestest.

RIP Mr. Eddings. God bless you and all of your family at this time.

The Exchange

David Eddings wrote some memorable characters. Characters I enjoyed emulating in DnD, like Sparhawk the paladin, Silk the rogue and Beldin the ugly wizard.

And I can remember laughing out loud at some of the conversations. He did good, that writer did.

Rest in Peace

Liberty's Edge

While I didn't much like his most recent series (The Elder Gods, I think it was called), I was a rather large fan of the Elenium/Tamuli and the Belgariad/Mallorean. He done good with Althalus too; Althalus and Emmy was one of the few moderately believable romances I've ever read about. He was good at taking stereotypes and making them his own in such a way as made for some truly wonderful stories. He will definitely be missed.

Scarab Sages

I just bumped into this sad news! :(

I remember reading the Pawn of Prophesy in the 1980's while also brain storming with what to do with the BECMI edition of D&D - and I ended up creating my own campaign world modelled upon the general flavour of the Belgariad setting after reading the whole series. I still have both, the books by Eddings, and my maps for D&D... :)

David Eddings, sad to hear of your passing. Thank you so much for taking me and many others on those voyages in your worlds! RIP
