The Exchange

I'm getting back in line for more.

So Qwilion, how many hardcovers will Boomer have to sign? I just want to make sure that he does not get too bad a case of Carpal Tunnel syndrom until AFTER he is done writing this project! ~cracks the whip~ Get to work, Boomer!

So I went to the linked website and I must be blind and dumb. I cannot find out how to join this thing. Then again I have had one hell of a day so if anyone could point me in the right direction.

Well as you can see me is not good at stupid scrolling. Let me go get hammer and me will fix.

~laughter~ Sorry to hear that. I will double check to make sure that I am correct on that. I will suggest to Qwilion that an improvement in registration would be nice.

Yep. I was correct. Scroll down and pick Bronze, Silver, or Gold sponsorship.

Yeah I saw it felt like a complete idiot for not seeing it before but for whatever reason I assumed it would be near the top somewhere.

There is a reason my avatar has a huge hammer. If it doesn't work hit it until A: It works or B: they/you buy a new one.

~grins~ That is ok. I have felt that way many a time.

I felt I should let you read the interview and the project summary before I started asking for you money.

Note to self: be more shameless about asking for money.

Thanks for helping us out Sharoth (goes and gets Sharoth's reward).

Steve, I hope you're feeling better today!

I didn't want to say anything, but your avatar has been looking a little sickly for some time now - it's now surprise that the great news about Ashton getting on board this project might overwhelm you!

Take care - we don't have enough Russell to go around, if you drop on us!

I am doing much better today, nothing like sleep and a day off.

My avatar is in the prime of Unhealth and has the best eye and dental coverage :)

Was busy doing Jade Oath layout, now that it is caught up, I will get to updating the interview and you and I will need to schedule a time for you to chat with me and robert on our Unfettered Development Podcast.

Hey, Qwilion, I want to give a gift UPGRADE to someone who's at bronze now—a gamer who can give Boomer ideas that will blow us away. Does the "What is Patronage" link on the RitePublishing site explain how to do that?

Shoot me an email about it, and we will get it all set up.

Steve Russell

Who knows a patronage project is really cool if its given as a gift :)

(BTW the percentage at the bottom of interview part 4 says 58%, glad to hear its much closer!)

Yeah, that' why I always put in the date and link to twitter since it is more up to date, but I will go update the site.

Paizo Employee Director of Narrative

Nice to have you aboard, Gully!

9% more to go! Come on new Patrons! Come and join the insanity that is Clinton Boomer!

I really do mean this in all good faith...I've just really never understood the idea of patronage projects. With a typical product (well from Paizo at least) you chat up the guys on the boards and they usually have insightful and interesting commentary on whatever point you care to make. If you suggest something you'd really like to see, they usually end up doing something with it. You get this, basically, for free. You just buy the book at the end of the line and you're set.

With patronage, as I understand it, you pay up to $150 to suggest ideas to the author--pretty much what I do for free here, and at the end of the day they might take your idea and junk it. It seems a little weird to have to pay big bucks to shoot around ideas with a developer, when that's kind of what I do around here whenever I want.

Am I misunderstanding anything? Cause that seems like a pretty unsatisfying arrangement.

The main difference here is the with somone like Paizo, they are now in a position where they are a major player in the RPG Scene and can propose stuff and have the money behind them to see it through to completion before actually selling it.

A lot of the time (but not always) Patronage Projects are undertaken by smaller publishers who sometimes need to secure the capital to produce the project before the beginning work on it, so they know that they will at least break even on the completed product.
I am sure there are other considerations involved in it, but I am confident that this is one of the major deciding factors in choosing to use the Patronage Project Model.

Also, this is a case of where I trust Boomer (and the people who are hosting this shin-dig) so some degree and believe in him (or them) enough to put up the capital to help this project get started. ~smiles~ Sometimes you just have to go on faith.

Edited to add some stuff.

I saw that and was just surprised at how quickly its moving up ... from ~50 to ~90 in exactly two weeks seems pretty nice (not knowing what is typical).

With a little luck ....

Hey we appreciate your voice, as we can only improve through criticism.

Quote:

The key word here is Typical Boomer originally proposed a typical product, and I came back to him saying "Do something Paizo would never let you do." He then came back with Coliseum Morpheuon, its not mass market its not your typical adventure or your typical mini-setting.

This was the case for the open alpha and beta test of the players guide (which I think was awesome), but did you have any direct input into the creation of the Bestiary? Did you get to playtest the changes made to th e monsters? Did you get to suggest the art discriptions, or changes to the initial sketches of artwork? How about changes to the final pieces? Did you get to say "no clip art!, you used that image already!"? Did you get Hi-Resolution copies of all the maps so you could run a really great looking virtual tabletop? Did you get 1"=1 square scale hi-res map packs of every map?

Did you want a lore DC table in Dungeon Denizens Revisited? Well with a patronage model you would have had what you wanted

When was the last time Paizo posted the full outline of a proposed adventure path? In the middle of production did you get to say, I would rather see monster x than monster y?

Paizo is my favorite Rpg company (and yes they are better than me)but there are soemthings you just cannot do and still meet the monthly production schedule they have.

First you got the pricing wrong.

$30 is bronze patronage you get limited access.
$75 is silver patronage you get full access.
$150 is gold patronage you get a signed personalized hard back copy
Thats the overly simplified version of pricing.

We work very hard to accommodate patron desires, if you want something changed we change it unless there is a disagreement amongst patrons. I learned from other patronage projects, you only need polls when you know their is going to be disagreements. If we junk an idea 99.9% of the time its due to budget, and even then we will sit down and discuss the idea before we junk it.

My point about your access to the developer is that it is limited to generalities and not specifics. It also has a vast number of other limitations as pointed out above.

I would also like to quote boomer

"user-oriented, buyer-dictated professional content"

For example our Arcana Evolved patronage projects, a niche line of products that no one else is producing (or would ever produce). Paizo products are awesome mass market products. They try to produce what will appeal to a broad audience they do this with amazing quality and by respecting and listening to their customers, if your their target audience then its perfect for you, as it is for me as I am a very satisfied Paizo customer myself.

If however you want something more, something different, something focused on 40 patrons instead of 4000 subscribers, Something dictated by you, the buyer, rather than a marketing strategy, something epic/yahoo wild and crazy then I humbly submit Clinton J. Boomer's Coliseum Morpheuon The Damanation Epoch, Rite Publishing. and our other patronage products for your consideration.

Thank you
