sleight of hand in combat

Skills and Feats

Can a rogue (or anyone ) use sleight of hand to take say a spell components pouch, holy symbol, metamagic rod, wand etc not being used while in combat. (I understand if it is in hand it's a disarm check perhaps)

if so it seems very easy (DC20) and on a metagame level a bit odd.

how have other people handled this- or how should it be handled?

Generally I would have whoever you're stealing from roll an opposed perception check. I suppose you could max out the skill and just be really good at it, but I'm sure there are plenty of things with a high perception score as well.

Also if I'm the wizard I use robes of holding. Very handy!

The spot roll specifically says it allows you to notice it happen- not to stop it.

so my 13th level rogue sees a wizard- runs up, yoink! no spell component pouch.

In my game the party is seeking to recover an item held by a powerful firegiant king. They have met him (and his guards)and had to run but not before noticing the item tucked in to his belt. (It is a piece of the rod of seven parts so the size of a rod). The rogue has asked if next time can he run in during the fight and swipe it from him- and if so how. I like the idea but DC20 will be auto success, even if the king notices, and it seems a bit lame.

I would rule that sleight of hand provokes an Attack of Opportunity if noticed.

So if you got a teamworking group that steal AoO's the rogue gets away with it.

Or the rogue is just good at dodging AoO's.

looks like it provokes two AoO to me

one for diverting attention, as Pick up an item and Retrieve a stored item both do

one for trying to escape
but, run up and snatch = cannot take a 5-foot step after
can't combine with spring attack either
so you can't just run up, grab it, and run away all in the same round ;)

yep- I agree with both of these points. I also think the DC should be higher dependent on the victim's level (like the DC for feint) and situation (ie in combat)
