Did I fail to mention my love for umber hulks? I plan to paint all the shadow hulks that come my way umber. Fact: Umber hulks do not need to be shadowized.
Fact - I don't want to think about how exactly one loves an umber hulk. Maybe that's a special effect of their confusion gaze...

But if I were gonna go all 'Fact! Best. Ever.' on a beastie that WotC kept IP, it would be the Displacer Beast. I love those freaky things.
And how! I love the purple squid kitty. The great equalizer, it doesn't matter how high your attack bonus is, you'll still miss 50% of the time. Muwhahaha!

especially since they took the idea from a comic (a scan of it is in one of the early blog posts I think)

Yeah, they held some of the classic favorites back. But take a look at the various threads on the Pathfinder Bestiary. I always get excited looking at the back-and-forth over monsters loved, scorned, and overlooked.
I am currently backing the Rust Monster Ticket, but i will take your advice...

Now I am still supporting rust monster remix, and suggesting Ewoks...:)

Like a D&D Master/Blaster combo.
Tweaking them to be even more like this combo could be neat. The chitinous back armor of the 'Tunnel Hulk' could have slits into which the legs of the Neogi could slide, anchoring it to it's host and allowing it direct control of it's actions, turning it into a giant organic 'exoskeleton' for the neogi rider, who also feeds parasitically from the Umber Hulks body. The Umber Hulk would appear mostly the same, due to the smaller size of the Neogi, only with two spider-like arms waving up over it's shoulders, and a single eel-like head rising up as well. The bulk of the Neogi's body would be pressed up against the Hulk's body and appear as a 'hunch.'
The Neogi would have the option of having the Hulk attack physically, while it waves it's little spider arms around from it's shoulders and throws low-level Sorcerer spells or something...
(And it wouldn't have to be specifically an Umber Hulk / Neogi thing, the concept could be adapted to some sort of underwater version of an Aranea, more spellcasting jellyfish than spider, that parasitically / symbiotically fuses to the armored back of a specially-modified species of giant crab that it uses as host, armor and 'mount,' for instance. The boneless jellyfish would otherwise not be able to leave the ocean, but carried by their giant crab 'mounts' they can terrorize coastal villages with the best of them! Even something that *appears* to be a Drider might turn out to be a specially created Spider that partially swallows a Dark Elf, so that it appears to be a centauroid creature, but is actually just a freakish form of mount!)

Don't forget the beaverpanther and the mooseshark ...
That's it. I now have a desire to use fiendish leechmonkeys in my next session...

I need to develop the spellcasting jellyfish/giant crab combo for a little aqueous surprise for someone :)
Dude, the combo is one harmless with one ferocious. Which is the harmless and which the ferocious jelly fish sting and crabs have menacing claws...ooh scary
However, I would like to offer the Badgertrout

Isn't that what a Flumph is?
Yeah but flumphs can fly and like salt, not salt water. I was thinking a disgusting highly-intellegent Portugese Man-O-War jellyfish with a NE outlook and a rasher of offensive arcane spells that casts Watery air on itself and mounts its trusty Giant Dire Poisonclaw Spidercrab to indulge in a little payback on Timmy the peasant boy who ran along the beach and jabbed sharp sticks into its children who washed ashore at high tide.

That's hot.
I want stats for these. Undersea communities full of them. Alien cities of living coral, lit by bioluminescent bacteria, swarming with intelligent evil jellyfish, some 'free-ranging,' others 'mounted' in their giant spider-crabs...
