I've actually spent some time pondering a slightly different, but still related question, what did nerds do before the modern era?
For instance, I imagine that many of the scribes in the Dark Ages had some of the same traits as programmers today.
And I suspect every village had at least one person who liked to tell stories about heroes and ancient gods to anyone who was willing to listen. Maybe not exactly a DM, but probably the closest thing.

Well, that will never happen, but I always have my growing comic book collection to keep me company and I would head back to the computer and do some digital art. Talk up walking walking and hiking again now that fall is settling in Las Vegas. Oh, there's so much I can do if RPGs disappeared from the stores and internet.
Not like it will happen though.

My video games would switch from RPGs to a more heavily influenced stack of strategy games, possibly back to my early roots and Street Fighter games. Beyond that, I'd be writing. How much I'd write, I'm not sure, given the lack of RPGs for inspiration, but probably more than what's currently posted over on Myspace.
Maybe I'd still be doing sketches? Unlikely.
More time outdoors? Maybe. I am a plant scientist, after all.

As for myself, I'd probably be writing, building LEGO models, or playing computer games. It was just about the time that I got into RPGs and computer games that I left off the LEGO hobby.
Anyone else?
Most likely things like . . . working in a soup kitchen, cleaning up litter, planting trees, working the voting polls, and such.
Good thing I found RPGs. (That sounds like a lot of work!)

* Computer Games (including Playstation).
* More reading of actual novels (I have a backlog of around a dozen novels atm, and with Planet Stories that list just keeps getting longer).
* Watch more TV (well not so much more, as more often than I do atm).
* Play more CCGs (although as that was an offshoot of the RPG industry then maybe they wouldn't be around, in which case ignore this option).
* And lastly spend more quality time with my wife (no addendum to that one, it's pretty self explainitory). (Oh wait, I did do an addendum, so just ignore that last addendum about not needing an addendum).

As do I, when it isn't giving me rashes (Toxicodendron sp.) or cutting me to pieces (Smilex rotundifolia, Aralia spinosa). Maybe I'd be a druid?

I wouldn't be stuck penning this encounter scene I've been working all day on and I could give love to my latest screenplay instead. Interestingly enough, that screenplay is about a gamer reading a forum post with this post's exact title, only my character's answer is far more clever and cinematic than mine.

Sit around in a grungy white wife beater with too tight tighty whiteys drinking beer from a styrofoam cup in the middle of an empty house while I listen to the sorrowful sounds of a latin dirge. existing on stale potato chips, 3 day old chinese and the occasional pizza slice I find in an old box stashed in the cupboard.
This would be my life without the enjoyment Ive received from RPG's....
ok not quite so drastic, but it sure wouldnt be as fun.
;)

lol. I would drop out of school, begin to sell crack and weed, eventually be thrown in jail, and start a hard core gang. Of course, rap included.

well my two kids keep me busy (one is 10, the other is 7), but my other hobbies are building models (mostly car models but I also do sci-fi stuff). Miniature painting, & playing computer games (not surprisingly, rpg mainly).
Ahh, but you wouldn;t have minis to paint, or rpg games to play!

1) i'd probably go out more often.
2) i'd stop fighting my boss about working on sundays.
3) i'd stop bugging my gf to get off the computer so i can browse these boards.
4) i'd save enough money to take that vacation to costa rica i plan on when i'm off federal paper.
5) i'd stop crying about some DEA agent's kid having my nearly complete 1e and 2e d&d collection (as it wouldn't have existed).
6) and finally, i'd have more time to mine my bellybutton for the lint collection i've decided to start...

I may read a little, but reading is mostly for nerds. you know.
When I say nerdy, I mean >Erik Mona< nerdy.
