If there were no role-playing games, how would you pass the time?

Off-Topic Discussions

As for myself, I'd probably be writing, building LEGO models, or playing computer games. It was just about the time that I got into RPGs and computer games that I left off the LEGO hobby.

Anyone else?

Dark Archive

I would most likely spend my time reading sci-fi and comic books, and watching anime. Either that or I would play a lot more paintball than I do now. Believe it or not, role-playing is actually the cheaper hobby.

Sovereign Court

I'd go build my own lunar lander! With blackjack! And hookers!

I would be producing T-Shirt with my drawings and playing video games (damn RPGs...)

Scarab Sages

I'd be watching movies.

Maybe something useful?

Or convincing the world they do not exist.

I've actually spent some time pondering a slightly different, but still related question, what did nerds do before the modern era?

For instance, I imagine that many of the scribes in the Dark Ages had some of the same traits as programmers today.

And I suspect every village had at least one person who liked to tell stories about heroes and ancient gods to anyone who was willing to listen. Maybe not exactly a DM, but probably the closest thing.

Scarab Sages

I think they pursued the available intellectual pursuits: art, business, music, teaching, etc. I also suspect a good deal might have gone into seminaries or monastaries/nuneries.

Do what? It's so woven into the fabric of my hobbies and passions that I'm not sure the two can be separated at this point. I imagine art would be in there somewhere (though where my inspiration would come from is a point to consider), along with other craftwork. Probably computers too.

Well, that will never happen, but I always have my growing comic book collection to keep me company and I would head back to the computer and do some digital art. Talk up walking walking and hiking again now that fall is settling in Las Vegas. Oh, there's so much I can do if RPGs disappeared from the stores and internet.

Not like it will happen though.

My video games would switch from RPGs to a more heavily influenced stack of strategy games, possibly back to my early roots and Street Fighter games. Beyond that, I'd be writing. How much I'd write, I'm not sure, given the lack of RPGs for inspiration, but probably more than what's currently posted over on Myspace.

Maybe I'd still be doing sketches? Unlikely.

More time outdoors? Maybe. I am a plant scientist, after all.

I worship the green.

Most likely things like . . . working in a soup kitchen, cleaning up litter, planting trees, working the voting polls, and such.

Good thing I found RPGs. (That sounds like a lot of work!)

In fact, forget the lunar lander!

With no RPGs, I'd build an incredible amount of papercraft sets (stuff like that from the fine folks at WorldWorks Games) and play a ridiculous amount of tabletop skirmish games.

* Computer Games (including Playstation).
* More reading of actual novels (I have a backlog of around a dozen novels atm, and with Planet Stories that list just keeps getting longer).
* Watch more TV (well not so much more, as more often than I do atm).
* Play more CCGs (although as that was an offshoot of the RPG industry then maybe they wouldn't be around, in which case ignore this option).
* And lastly spend more quality time with my wife (no addendum to that one, it's pretty self explainitory). (Oh wait, I did do an addendum, so just ignore that last addendum about not needing an addendum).

Scarab Sages

I'd be reading more...maybe...I don't know really, started playing when I was 12, I'm almost 38 now, so without that influence in my life, I have no clue what or where I'd be...even speculation is difficult...

RPGs only take up about 6 hours out of my week as it is, so I'd probably just fill those 6 hours with video games. I'd also have about $5000 sitting around instead of having an armoire full of gaming books.

(Actually, I'd probably just have a $5000 home theater system instead.)

As do I, when it isn't giving me rashes (Toxicodendron sp.) or cutting me to pieces (Smilex rotundifolia, Aralia spinosa). Maybe I'd be a druid?

I would begin a real cult

I wouldn't be stuck penning this encounter scene I've been working all day on and I could give love to my latest screenplay instead. Interestingly enough, that screenplay is about a gamer reading a forum post with this post's exact title, only my character's answer is far more clever and cinematic than mine.

Sounds interesting.... I think?

Sit around in a grungy white wife beater with too tight tighty whiteys drinking beer from a styrofoam cup in the middle of an empty house while I listen to the sorrowful sounds of a latin dirge. existing on stale potato chips, 3 day old chinese and the occasional pizza slice I find in an old box stashed in the cupboard.

This would be my life without the enjoyment Ive received from RPG's....

ok not quite so drastic, but it sure wouldnt be as fun.

;)

lol. I would drop out of school, begin to sell crack and weed, eventually be thrown in jail, and start a hard core gang. Of course, rap included.

Silver Crusade

well my two kids keep me busy (one is 10, the other is 7), but my other hobbies are building models (mostly car models but I also do sci-fi stuff). Miniature painting, & playing computer games (not surprisingly, rpg mainly).

Ahh, but you wouldn;t have minis to paint, or rpg games to play!

Liberty's Edge

1) i'd probably go out more often.

2) i'd stop fighting my boss about working on sundays.

3) i'd stop bugging my gf to get off the computer so i can browse these boards.

4) i'd save enough money to take that vacation to costa rica i plan on when i'm off federal paper.

5) i'd stop crying about some DEA agent's kid having my nearly complete 1e and 2e d&d collection (as it wouldn't have existed).

6) and finally, i'd have more time to mine my bellybutton for the lint collection i've decided to start...

5. What? How'd he get that?

6. Lol

Scarab Sages

Endlessly post inane comments to other peoples posts on some other message board.

it's an assumption. it never showed up on the invoice of my property that was auctioned off after my arrest...

I would play boardgames, card games, and dice games.

I may read a little, but reading is mostly for nerds. you know.

Minesweeper is a fun game.

Liberty's Edge

Little puppet shows, drinking, throwing darts, and pro wrestling.

We would make collectives

Well more so then now

I would already have the entire Legion universe catologed, as well as a complete comic collection. I'd also be an expert in archery and not just "ok" in markmanship.

Scarab Sages

Probably spend more time hunting and fishing. I'm a rednecked geek! :D

Sex.

Myself, other people, whatever.

Kruelaid wrote:

Really, wow! Mind if I visit. I'm getting into the car right now.

Hey Kruelaid, I'm sorry I got delayed. Car problems, it figures.

Eileen's Car problems.

The Exchange

Yea, boardgames. Then minis. Music and cooking. Eating and Drinking. Sex. Watching DVDs. In that order.

Sovereign Court

Ale and Whores inbetween going adventuring.

Which I could probably afford if Paizo didn't own my paycheck.

When I say nerdy, I mean >Erik Mona< nerdy.

If there were no RPGs, well, then I'd have to just take over the world. You'd all be living under my despotic regime. Every Monday would be Red Beans & Rice day. Every Thursday would be "Try a New Beer" day. Reality TV would be outlawed (except for Stan Lee's Who Wants to be a Superhero).

Sex holes. Sex blimps. Writing William Shakespeare fanfiction. Trying to teach fish our language (not just, you know, the international language like a certain contractor in the New York area that's run off with pain pills).

I'm building a fort in the woods. I would probably finish faster without Paizo... cmon guys! (jk)
