I agree; the Bible thumper should quit meddling, but what's the story with the Lucifer name? That's jacked up too. Who the hell names their kid Lucifer? Who needs that bullcrap? I don't get it. What's wrong with Jimmy? Or Musashi or something.
My dad almost named me "Heathcliff," but a friend of his said, "aww, man; don't saddle that kid with that all his life." To that dude, thanks dude.
Honest to goodness, I worked with a lady named Lou Cypher. She owned that name with beaming pride.

Re: Seaman Swallows
Quite a few ladies in the Navy apparently haven't thought through the ramifications. I've met low-ranking enlisted Navy with the following surnames:
Swallows, Spitts, and Guzzler. All of them female.
And due to the number of people who have met a Seaman Swallows, there must be quite a few ladies with that surname in the Navy. Poorly thought-out family tradition?
When I was in AIT at sheppard AFB, we had navy on the base as well (seabees). Names like these are not an urban legend/military myth. I saw both a Seaman Cannon and a Seaman Guzzler while I was there. Funnily enough, Seaman Cannon was a female and Seaman Guzzler was a male. You would think people with names like these would come to the realization that basic training is going to be hell for them before they sign on the dotted line.

I don't plan to breed, so I don't have a dog in this kid-naming fight (not that it's a fight, I just had to use that euphemism), but I do have a question related to naming things. Why have I seen more than one "Morningstar Christian Church"? I mean, really? Did they read the book sitting in the pews?
Or is it *that* kinda church, 'cause that'd be pretty damned clever.
Yeah there's a hymn about the "Star of the Morning" that makes me cringe every time I hear it (not at my church). Did Not Do The Research.
I've known some folks with awful names. I had a buddy named Phil McCracken. He wasn't the kind of guy you teased about it... big aggressive martial artist type. I had a chorus teacher named Philip Michael Hunt: Phil Mike Hunt.

Hymns about Jesus make you cringe? What kind of church do you go to?
The phrase 'morning star' is not actually attributed to Satan at any point. The Latin word lucifer is used to translate the Hebrew phrase morning star or possibly day star in the book of Isaiah, where it refers to a Babylonian king. Due to similarities in this kings arrogance and that of Satan the word began to be associated with the devil, but that is not how it was originally used.
In the new testament the phrase 'morning star', is used by Jesus speaking of Himself.
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, [and] the bright and morning star.
And that is why you see churches and hymns referring to the Morning Star.
Edit: Oh, and as for naming the kid God... Whatever their reasons, it is unlikely that he will ever thank them for it.

I could have sworn that Wicht had a post about this earlier, but now I can't find it anywhere. Yep, in essence, Wolfie has it here (there's a windy, and rather unfortunate, road through the middle ages of this term, Lucifer, and I believe a pre-life in Gnosticism).

My fiance and I are thinking of Indiana as a potential name for a girl. I'm going for "quirky and loveable," but I'm afraid I'm blinded by my love of pop culture and would be subjecting the kid to years of torment. How close to the child abuse line would you say it is?
The other one we're thinking about is Alexander Luther, since a traditional name on my father's side is Luther. I feel like this one isn't as dangerous for the kid, since you have to incorporate the middle name to get the reference and they have a totally normal first name to use. We don't plan on calling him "Lex," either.

Pretty close... but at least it's not Anakin or Gandalf.

Since you asked, I'd name a girl with Indiana as a middle name. That way, she can decide herself whether she wants to own up to it. First name is going to equal torture. Middle name will be minimal suffering.
I don't see the problem with Alexander Luther -- the names have plenty of other associations, in my mind.

Bah. Damn thread necromancy. Didn't realize this was so old... or that Wicht had already posted my post. Can I claim a two year ninja?

Go for it. All in the spirit of the thread.
