I was trying not to say it, but yes indeed. An uncommon name lends one an aura of extra humpability.
And sorry as I am that you were compared to candy; something delicious people pay to savor, I was born near San Francisco, at some point lived in San Francisco, and my name is Rone. Yep. Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco treat. I thought I was the first person to coin the term, "Do you think you were the first to come up with that?" Which is quite ironic.
When other seven year olds said, "Rone the Drone," I responded with, "Cool... I'm the one that gets to sit back all day and do nothing but knock up the queen." Guess I was a little precocious.

Then I yet again contemplated going by my middle name. So I asked the dude in my class whose name that was if it was allright by him; and he said hellz no; it'll cause too much confusion, and there's nothing wrong with my name.
It's just there's this whole bardo involved with it. Bardos get tedious.

About Lucifer. His Chinese name is "You Ming", which means "have bright", and translates idiomatically as "famous" He chose his English name for classes in his second language. His parents cannot speak a word of English, and had no part in the name. He researched it himself, on the internet, and knows the meaning. I fully support him in his name choice, and think it is the best name in his class. Better even than Strawberry, or Playboy ;)
In which case ... cool. And I would fully support his choice as well (knowing that it was his choice, and seemingly a well informed one at that). I have absolutely no problems with people choosing whatever names they want for themselves.
In fact, I commend the choice and the research (and presumably awareness) that went into it. I know a Taiwanese girl who, when choosing her English name, did considerably less research ... and settled on 'Candy'. (She did later change it again).

A fair number of Chinese people do seem to have problems with English when it comes to names. I knew a young woman in high school whose family came to Canada from China when she was very young and her parents were not too fluent in English, so when they picked an English name for their daughter they went to the Bible. Not so bad thus far right? They evidently missed certain context because the name they chose was Jezebel of all things. To make matters worse the last name was O-just the letter O (or that might be a translation or transliteration) but whatever the case one can imagine the reaction "Jezebel ... oh". Not malicious, just not overly well planned.

Oh yes, though I cannot read that in my workplace because of literal ROFLMAO which makes people wonder...
One of the better things in Finnish is that it is a phonetic language so we miss all that "name is written like this and pronounced like that" stuff...so at least all the Finns know immediately how to pronounce a Finnish name.
With foreigners it's a bit trickier, I have noticed especially letter J and double vowels and consonants are complicated, so eg. people named Jaakko will not hear their name pronounced correctly in most places...
Ever been to Erie, Pennsylvania? There's a reason they call it Little Poland. The whole place is alphabet soup. For example, when I was growing up, my best friend had a last name of "Prszybyszewski" (pronounced "Shiv-a-shisky"). 14 letters, two of them vowels.
Y is a vowel in many languages, though Polish is indeed quite a "I'm sorry, what was your name?" language.
Then of course there is a problem of names having different meanings in other languages...former Finnish prime minister had a name which in Japanese means "idiot", leading to some extra effort in diplomacy when visiting there...then again, some people get "cool, I'm a superhero!" moments when their name means "thunder" or something like that.

BTW, the name Jennifer took off in the US when Barnnum heavily promoted Jenny Lind "The Swedish Nightingale" (so named after the Hans Christian Andersen's story she inspired, The Nightingale) before and during her tour here back in 1850-51. Now that man could promote!

I know how you feel. 90% of people I introduce myself to to think my name is "Keith." In 12th grade for a while, I just got tired and quit correcting them.
Then this guy called me Keith, and my friend told him, "hey, man. His name is Heath." So he was like, "dude...I've been calling you Keith for 6 months. Why didn't you say something?"

You know, that's funny. Swallows is a common English surname--I've met many Swallows throughout my military career. I knew a CPT Swallows and a LTC Swallows--and no-one batted an eye. But Soldiers named Swallows always get the jokes and tasteless remarks.

Quite a few ladies in the Navy apparently haven't thought through the ramifications. I've met low-ranking enlisted Navy with the following surnames:
Swallows, Spitts, and Guzzler. All of them female.
And due to the number of people who have met a Seaman Swallows, there must be quite a few ladies with that surname in the Navy. Poorly thought-out family tradition?
