I really don't like 3e. Really. I promised I would never play the game again ... ever.
I am headed for an epic fail.
I love Pathfinder, Galorian, and the Pathfinder Society.
I so hate you guys. I really really do. You made a game, a setting, mods, and accessories that are so good and so compelling that I have no choice but to play them.
My wife actually yelled at me for spending too much money at my FLGS yesterday. Well, by yelled I mean that she gave me one of those looks.
So what did I do to make up for it - I went online today and spent more money so I could wear my faction shirt to DragonCon.
You are making spend spousal point like crazy. By the end of this year I will have no cred left at all.
And how do I explain this to the folks on the 4e board? How do I tell them that the whole "I hate 3e" really means "I hate 3e unless it has anything to do with Paizo".
Y'all just suck for making my life complicated. Oh, and don't stop cause this kind of pain is well worth it.

You could create a new alias just for 3e/pathfinder ... then you can be two totally different people. :-D
just a thought.
And I'm right there with you on the spending thing. I thought I was finally going to be able to stop my spending ... but Piazo screwed me by engaging my interest. <shakes fist in faux derision> Foul tempters!

I have an easy solution for you regarding your wife.... Divorce.
I just got divorced..... No more "looks" or comments from her!Of course I now pay huge sums of money in support...... But it's worth paying thousands a month in support to spend less than $100/month on Paizo products!
Wait..Now I know why I failed math in school. :(

Well that would be fine except I love my wife more than I love gaming. Been married for 12 years and I am looking forward to the next 12 even more.
I tried to get her to play. No good. Ah well.

I hate D&D...all Editions.. Unless it is Paizo... The only thing I have run have been paizo..
I have tried D&D many times in the past.. never stuck to it long..Hated it with a passion..
Then Dungeon APs came along and I fell in love with the story..not the game..
So if it was not for Paizo.. I would not be playing D&D

I can understand this feeling. I truly do. Pathfinder ended up being so much cooler than I had even hoped. I am kind of at the point where I find myself saying "yeah in 4e its like X, Y, and Z but in Pathfinder it's so much cooler because...."
I dropped a crap load on Paizo stuff at my FLGS just the other day. And I am looking to spend more.

So, in addition to buying all the 4e stuff and all the Paizo stuff, you now need to spend all your time converting the APs to 4th edition rules. Won't your wife will appreciate the fact that, not only do you spend twice as much money, but now you have no time to spend with her, either?!
Nah. We have a good arrangement. We throw on a podcast, she knits, I crack open my laptop, and we share some quality multi-tasking time.

Seriously though, it's probably the best situation to be in- I've not been so juiced about actually running D&D since 3.0 hit the shelves. My copy of the PF Campaign setting arrived yesterday and I can honestly say it gets pride of place next to my Greyhawk and Scarred Lands materials.
If you want to play 4.0, be my guest, for my own part, I'll be putting my hard earned moola into a product line that has revived my faith in classic roleplaying, from a company that actually listens and considers the needs of their customers.
I know I bang of about RPGs losing the "game, dice, imagination and you you're good to go", but in practical terms, Pathfinder is turning into the homebrew I wish I had the time to cook up.
{EDIT} Incidentally, my missus is very understanding, but I don't push it- the Pathfinder subscription gives me a manageable budget and actually helps my marriage.

Thanks. But don't worry I still believe (note the language of opinion) 4e to be the best edition of D&D thus far so this is not a huge reversal. This is an acknowledgement that Paizo makes some amazing products.

¬¬ this feels like a AA meeting ¬¬
i never got more than 10 books from WotC about 3.0, not mention 3.5
most of my expenses for years were Vampire: The Masquerade, Mage: The Awakening, Hunter: The Reckoning
then i meet 3.0... ok i got the base, i loved 2nd ed, it is still my Alma Mater... but i played with what little i get, the books others friends bought and my imagination (i was the GM most of the time)... with one exception... my regular Dragon Magazine and Dungeon Magazine bought from my local Hobby Store which i had to stop 4 years ago ehen i came back home no hobby stores... and the fright costs to Mexico are the little death)
Then Ravenoloft came back... i missed only the 1st Monster Manual... aside of that igt everything, my claws could get (Arthaus from WW after all, and then i began buying th Warcraft RPG books), but also I meet Dragonstar, Midnight and Dawnforge for Fantasy Flight Games... just recently got the base book for Midnight but i got everything from the other 2 lines, but for a long time after Ravenloft my true love became Arcana Unearthed (then Evolved) and with it World of Warcraft RPG (which i only got the base because the clases and races are made as AE, but i hate the spells)
then the 4.0 was announced... and i read and i dispaired... i thought it was the end... and i new i will have to spend my money in other thing... maybe videogames or worst... Save It for the future...
but ultimately i bougt scion (too short) and began hunting for Alternity books, looking for soemthing different to calm the burning in my chest
(during this time, for almost a year i have been playing alternity and Monte Cook's WoD D20, and trying without success to create my own game and setting... but i disgress)
then... i don't know exactly how... someone must have told me about it... i was sent into the Alpha 2 and what i saw make me fell in love with Pathfinder... then i saw it was the same people that did the wonderful magazines i could not buy anymore (i hate how expensive is to send things beyond US borderline), since March i have been checking the books, planing to play the game, now that the Alpha is out i am expecting that Amazon sends me my copy of the Beta and the Campaign Setting...
yes Paizo... i do hate you... i really really wanted to get a copy of Hunter: The Vigil
PS: WAR Art is Awesome
PS1: Jason is in my book the best game designer, only after Monte Cook
PS2: Lisa, Jason, tell Amazon to send me my books now, snif, i am suffering Withdrawal (just joking :D)
PS3: to Paizo, Lisa, Jason, WAR and the rest... thank you for the excelent game you have given us... it really really bring back the fantasy... now if we just could get spell duration less than 3.5 and more like 3.0... and you would make me areally really happy guy :)
PS4: not married, but my parents will scream to me when my books arrive... well my problem for not moving out... but i need a place for my books :D

About 5 years ago I told my Lady to stop trying to buy me cloths for my birthday (I am a tough to fit "gamer size" guy) and get me something I really wanted. I gave her a link to subscriptions to Dungeon and Dragon Mags. She has fed my Paizo habit since. I am now up to AP, Chronicles and Companion subscriptions. That is how I know how much she cares.
My best advice for domestic bliss, get her to buy your paizo stuff. Problem solved!

And I'll still say that 4E isn't D&D no matter what Logo it has on the cover. You don't buck 30+ years of history and flavor.

hear hear!!!
i actually abandoned a discussion group because it was DnD based... and even if they talked about 3.5 i just didn't want to do anything with it... so we created D20 discussion group... to discuss anything D20... but for the alst weeks it has been msotly around Pathfinder (we discuss there too our online game)

I'd be a lot happier if 4e didn't have the D&D name, true, but being as WotC is owned by a publicly traded company that is required by law to do everything to maximize its shareholders' profits, they couldn't exactly sit on the brand name.
Though lately I will admit that I've come around to the view that 4e actually is a a true D&D game, just an entirely new edition of Dungeons and Dragons, Original Dungeons and Dragons. It's certainly not the next in the continuum of Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, 1e, 2e, 3e, and 3.5e. (Remember, the only reason they dropped the "A" in AD&D was for marketing.) Pathfinder's the next step in that AD&D continuum, both mechanically and in terms of general flavor and world-view.

i've always enjoyed your elloquence in defending/explaining stuff about/discussing 4e (well, except the few times you were baited into an occasionally strident post, but, you know, we're all human), and i am happy to know that you'll be applying your (imo) very keen gaming mind to the pathfinder way of things. i am quite looking forward to your analyses and evaluations of the system.
all in all, welcome aboard :)

Man, I am so lucky that both the husband and I play RPGs. He never played before we got married though. I had to convert him. He wouldn't eat Chinese food either. I've had a lot of work to do, but he's been worth it ;)
EDIT: I *still* have a lot of work to do. A woman's work is never done...or some such nonsense.

A nice post
CWM, it takes a big person to come out and modify their stance (although I understand your frustration is with 3E not Pathfinder). You have always been a concientious poster, if a bit strident in defending 4E's 'honor' at times. I posted once before on another thread that I admired the courage of your convictions.
Although I personally have made the descision to go PRPG only, I have always valued other people's take on things. If more posters supported their views with reasonable posts rather than snarky snipes and ad hominem attacks there would be a lot less bad feeling in the RPG community. We are all tabletop gamers, and we need to respect each other, even if we disagree which game is the best.
Welcome to PRPG full time. Enjoy both games (and any others you like) to their fullest. Leave Paizo catalogs around the house for the wife to find (it's what I do ... I got $150 in Green Ronin sale goodies for Christmas last year!)

Crosswiredmind,
You and I share(d) a lot of opinions about 4E (though I still haven't had the chance to play it... darnable group), but like you I am too caught up with wanting to run Paizo stuff to change. I am just now getting close to the end of Shackled City and I still want to run Age of Worms, Savage Tide, Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne and now Second Darkness.
What I am a little worried about though is once stuff starts converting to the Pathfinder RPG. Don't get me wrong, they are working on fixing things that need fixing... but I don't feel it goes far enough... I think 4E did a close job of that.
So once I have all that run (what, 5 years?) I will be faced with a choice of changing game systems one way or another... either 4E or Pathfinder RPG. Not sure I like having to make that choice.
Anyway, just curious what your thoughts on Pathfinder RPG are?

5 years is a long ways away. If you're going to be playing Paizo products until then, I would just hold out for 5e. ;)

I think you'll find all sorts of guys and gals on these boards that will share all kinds of opinions and breakdowns about this or that success/failing of this or that system.
In the end, you'll see your own opinions verified, I think. PRPG is the spiritual successor of 3.5 and doesn't have vocation too go to far in modifying the system (it's there to keep 3.5 in print and takes this opportunity to improve things in some areas of the rules, but not to change 3.5 per se), whereas 4E tries to make a blank slate and rebuild the system from the ground up.
You sure can look at it as a choice of either/or (I do in many ways). Or you can decide to run both, or one system for a particular campaign, then the other for the next one, and alternate as needs warrant.
It's really up to you and your players' tastes, in the end. :0)
