So I finally put a new blog post in my Sinister Minds at Work blog. This blog post also has a sneaky peeky at Pele, Goddess of the Volcano in Dark Vistas #1: Razor Coast...Potentially not so safe for work, if you consider the goodness from Ye Olde 1st Edition Dieties and Demigods BAD BAD BAD! :-)

Just read it. Good stuff.
I've been putting off the Gods section of my homebrew for the reasons you mentioned. I didn't want them to be too cliche, God of law, death, magic, etc. You put things in perspective. I may take it on now. Thanks Nick.

My pleasure Cralius! Thanks for reading!

You know, Nic, I worshipped Pele once, togehter with my wife while walking through the Volcano Park on Big Island.
We built a little mount of stones and laid a green leave on top of it.
We were told it would calm Pele, so that she wouldn't let the sleeping Volcano errupt while we where walking through its crater...
Cool to have her in Razor Coast, my wife will love her!
Is it true she shows herself sometime clad in white?!

She does! Though obviously not in this picture! >:-)
BTW: I LOOOOOOVE the Big Island. Volcano National Park is the single coolest place I've ever been. Pele's awesome power makes so much sense after visiting there.
My wife and I picked her up once too and drove her down shore. Long story. An awesome long story that requires a drink or two. Hawai'i has mana. Myth lives here.

A volcano? Is that it? Other than that she has nothing going for her.
That's why ladies and gentlemen there is only one true god around these parts. And it is He who Hungers. The Devourer, Dajobas! I mean all she is, is a jalopeno-popper compared to the Shark God!

Isn't Pele the God of Soccer?
Who crushes the Nazis with his ball skills in the film Victory.

I think even the insanely ravenous Dajobas stop flapping his fins when she walks into the room. Even gods can have awkward moments.
D: "Uh... hey."
P: "Hey."
D: "My name is Daj-- I'm uh... Are you chilly? I could get you a blanke--"
P: "No. I'm fine."
D: "Cool. Yeah."

Nick, it was nice meeting you at Origins this year.
Last winter I put several weeks into designing and refining my first complete pantheon. I figured this was one badge of courage I never completely earned in the 25+ years I've been playing the game. (I had designed a few gods, but never a whole pantheon, until now.) What I discovered when I put the time in, is that there are so many questions the DM must answer silently to himself to get just the right balance of portfolios/domains/alignments/personalities/appearances/favored weapons/etc., not to mention the great world that I concurrently worked on to be sure I had a pantheon that made sense with the calendar, places, ancient histories, myths, and legends... The whole experience felt like a massive genesis moment, as the world and the gods were iteratively coming into being, and the tweaking didn't stop for weeks.
I get the sense that you, like a few DMs I've admired over the years would take great pride/enjoyment in the creation of a pantheon. Especially in these days of quick, quick, quick, - I felt very old school during the slow, careful act of this patheon's genesis.
My new campaign is greatly benefiting, and it is such a pleasure as a DM to deliver a world where everything that has been coherently created, doesn't require any research - 'cause its all in my head (and plenty in charts on paper too). Thanks also for the excellent work the PAIZO team did on Golarion's pantheon.

As a displaced Hawaiian myself, I applaud your recent appropriation. Given that this is the one diety that has ever shown me an appropriately timed sign/manifestation, I think she'll do your Razor Coast campaign great justice...no offense to the Devourer of Worlds intended. *makes warding sign*

I think you will find the corect term is "titties".
Nick, a quick question - can I only buy Razor Coast through Sinister (i.e. not through Paizo)? And is it actually published yet?
Hey Aubrey!
Razor Coast will be only available at Sinister for a little while at least, though I'm sure I'll eventually offer copies elsewhere (need to iron out the details). I'm also offering a deep discount to gaming stores as well, so if you have an FLGS near you, that you want to buy it at, have them shoot me an email at sinister@sinisteradventures.com
Razor Coast shall release (FINALLY) at the end of August!

I have a BA in theology and love all the weirdness that humans seem to inevitably put into their religions. My games are always pervaded with new gods and temples and philosophies and the like.
The great thing about D&D though is that it lets gods have limits. The wonderful thing about giving a goddess a stat block isn't that someone might someday approach her with his sword at the ready (fun though that might be) but rather that we can tell what powers she doesn't have. There's none of this "Well, she's a goddess so she can just do that."
The best exercise I ever did for understanding gods in D&D was to run a campaign I called "The Wussiest Gods Ever". We took a standard first-level adventuring party, gave them an origin story, and then they each received one divine rank. They were 1 HD gods, and while they were amazingly awesome (eg one of them could summon a t-rex at will as a spell-like ability) they still only had a few hit points, not that anyone could easily penetrate their DR. It was enormously fun, and it taught us all about the mechanics. I keep thinking about running it as a convention game, actually. :)

I'm running a swashbuckling, ship sailing campaign now, and wish I had had the opportunity to be "inspired" by your Razor Coast campaign before I began running it.
My next campaign is going to be a d20 Modern/Future campaign in the Firefly verse, but my campaign after that is going to be set in a world with a demiurge, its minions, and a bunch of other religions that try to explain away the world's evil creator. I find I get a lot of inspiration from novels (George RR Martin's Drowned God, Lord of Light, Stormlord, the Seven; Jacqueline Carey's grandson of God & His companion angels; Lois McMaster Bujold's Charion's Holy Family; Sara Douglass's Ploughman; Neil Gaiman's Endless, even (or especially) Peter Hamilton's concept of God's Brother). I'm trying to find a way to put them all together in a system of competing, yet internally consistent, pantheons.

Back in 1984, I was on vacation on the island of O'ahu. The islands were suffering from a drought at the time and they were rationing water.
While visiting a botanical garden, the guide was telling us about a particular plant sacred to Pele. According to the story, if you pick the flower of the plant while entering a forest, Pele will create rain and cause you to become lost. If you pick the flower while leaving the forest, Pele will grant you good luck. The guide then picked one of the flowers. We took no more than a few steps when it started raining all of a sudden. It was the first rain that the island had in close to a month.

Yes, but did you also get losts? that's the question.
And why didn't someone think about doing that when the drought first started?
lol

No, but we were leaving the area at the time, so I figured the rain was good luck for those suffering from a drought.
Still, you would figure someone would have thought of that legend.
