Recapturing the Magic: New PBP recruiting players

The Exchange

First and foremost I’ll begin by saying that this PBP won’t be to everybody’s taste, if all goes according to plan it will be a little odd. So, please read everything before signing up to join in the fun.

I’m going to be accepting 4 players for this one and it’s going to be run by both me and my lovely husband Paul T, although he’ll be in charge of some of the recurring NPCs more than anything else.

Background Information

Once magic was everywhere, or so the old stories go, faeries and warlocks were real, and feats that defied all logic were commonplace occurrences. But those are just tales, things to sooth children before they go to sleep. Still, some backwards people in the rural corners of the world hang onto these old ideals. Claiming that disbelief is the monster that killed the magic, they fight fiercely to keep the stories alive. These believers grow fewer in number each year, giving up hope or just growing older, their concerns turning instead to keeping their families clothed and fed and stopping their daydreaming.

You’re a resident of Clearbrook, a scenic small village nestled between the trees of a great wood and sat on the banks of a beautiful stream and is supported by a string of outlying farms. When you were a child there were a lot of fantastic and magical stories about but that was well over a decade and a half ago and the world has become more sensible and, quite frankly, dull.

Despite it all a part of you has always clung to the old stories, despite all evidence that magic doesn’t exist. As you continue with humdrum village life you always keep one eye open, hoping for something fantastic.

Character Creation

  • Human characters aged between 18 and 25 who have lived in Clearbrook all of their lives.
  • PFRPG rules.
  • Any class except wizard (there just isn’t the magical reference material in the world). Anyone of a spellcasting class won’t have access to spells at the beginning of play, weird things may have happened around them from time to time, but no direct spellcasting yet. Same goes for familiars/animal companions, not to begin with, you might have a close pet but no innate bond yet.
  • 28 point build as per DMG which can be done easily here
  • You are an average person, an exceptional example of an average person with your stats and skills, but still average. Your day to day job is probably something decidedly average; shopkeep, farmer, midwife etc.
  • Linked to the above: 1 free rank in a profession or knowledge skill related to your trade.
  • All dice rolls will be done using invisible castle.

Post all questions/character ideas here and I’ll try to answer as best I can without giving up everything I have planned, there needs to still be some suprises for you! :)

Shadow Lodge

I love surprises!
You and I certainly have some PBP connections already, so let me put it this way. I'm totally interested, but will take a back seat if you pull 4 other interested people! No hard feelings! Is that fair?

The Exchange

Hush you! No backseating, if you're interested in playing you're more than welcome to join in the fun. If I get my four then I'd stretch to five to include you ;)

This is exactly my favorite kind of game -- and my other playtest game just closed.

I'm in!

The Exchange

Yay, it'll be great running more stuff for you Pat!

I currently have a friend over who I'm slowly conveincing he wants to join in too as I enjoy running for his tabletop characters :)

How about Len Harker, husky farmboy who's since apprenticed to the village healer? Len is 20, shows a talent for healing, but also for hunting (an Erastil worshipper). He's bold, even brash, but always tries to do right by the community (when he thinks things through enough).

This sounds fantastic, and I've been (somewhat) patiently looking for an opportunity to get on board with a new game as a player.

If you'll have me, I'd like to play as a fighter (archer), somewhere on the older end of your age spectrum. For a day-to-day profession, I'm thinking hunter, woodsman, something of that nature.

Thanks for your consideration!

-Mal

edit: Pat's concept beat mine by about 40 seconds, so if there's too much overlap between the 'foresty' types, I'd happily go in a different direction.

Shadow Lodge

Hey pat, i was thinking of husky farmboy too! ask kayos! I can think of many, uh, unprecedented, roleplaying possibilities for two husky farmboys seemingly lost, over their heads in a world they don't know....lost together

haha ok
barring that
I have an idea for a mysterious metalworker

Malvoisin, no worries. The hunting part is rooted in his abilities more than his personality (Erastil's favored weapon is longbow, and I'm thinking Plant domain). Len is definitely more Cleric than Fighter. I think we can make enough divergence.

Xdahnx, I don't doubt you at all!

I had an idea for a rogue-classed character too...a mischievous, somewhat-lazy son of an innkeeper. So, I could happily go that way if asked. :)

The Exchange

Living where you do most of your village will be farmers and foresty types so I don't mind the overlap at all, you may start out similar in some ways but you'll have your differences and the paths you take may end up remarkably different..

Go with your instincts on what you would like to play, pick whatever you think you'd have the most fun with!

Also, Dahn: you have no idea how much I giggled at the term 'Mysterious Metalworker'!

And to fill you all in, my friend is sat here thinking up ideas so I'm thinking he's in. His current favourite idea is something bard-like.. or maybe being the weird child of the village and following the (slightly heretical) god, Nethys.

So I don't have much to do today . . .

Starting gold/equipment?

Starting hit point options?

The Exchange

I knew I missed something out!

Max hitpoints and roll for gold - if you roll less than average take the average.

5d4=14

I actually was wondering about the hit point options on p.10 of Alpha 2 . . .

The Exchange

That's what I get for typing in a hurry, I meant the "Standard: Maximum hit points for 1st level plus your Constitution modifier and any other bonuses."

Experience has taught me that the other options lead to characters who are a little too healthy for the feel I'm going for with this one! :)

Cool. Think I'm good to go mechanics-wise (other than mundane equipment -- longbow really chews into the budget!)

Donnell Foley, Fighter/Woodsman, reporting for duty. :)

More to come later.

Is there room for one more?

Yep, including my friend who's thrashing out character ideas with me in person that'd make 5 and I did say I could stretch to five so you're in :)

But sorry to anybody else, this means we're full!

Shadow Lodge

Less than two hours to fill up. Sorry to all those sleepers!

Sleep is for the weak!!

But I am a little in shock as I was expecting no interest at all..

I'm in middle of character making, but I'm not sure what to do. Should I play a sorcerer or Rogue. I've been meaning to play one or the other in a PFRPG game. Decisions, decisions...heh.

The Exchange

If it helps with your decision; bloodlines I'd suggest for a sorcerer are Arcane, Celestial, Destined, Elemental (Water or Earth) or Fey

I'll finish the rest up after I get some grub.

Kayos this sounds wonderful. Would you be prepared to stick me down as an alternate in case anyone has to drop out?

As it's you I'll stretch to six :) The party is currently without a rogue so that would round the group out..

A discussion thread

Now we're all full I thought it best we move to PBP discussion to save us bumping up this topic.

This one went quick. The usual suspects I see from the quirky but nice contingent. As opposed to the badass kick butt group. ;)

The Exchange

I am quite literally in shock and awe at the response from people! I promised myself no group 2 this time though I intend to stick to that. Although the notion of alternates just in case is perfectly viable.

LOL!

This looks like fun. Best wishes!

heh, though you are being exceptionally evil inflicting two thirds of the collective on them, though I'm not sure which one is worse.

I'm not evil! The collective is lovely and fluffy really! Stormwatcher will just create one of his quirky characters and Paul.. well there will be some interesting NPCs. That doesn't make me mean! I could have inflicted Andy upon them! Or the last third..
