Pardon my ignorance but how do I go about playing WoW? How much would be the initial cash outlay to join?
There is a ten-day free trial here.
After that, the original game is $20 and can be purchased on Amazon, game stores, Target, or wherever, plus a $15 per month fee. The Burning Crusade expansion, which has two new races and more high-level areas is $30. I really enjoyed the original game. I have to work a lot harder to like the Burning Crusade stuff. Having spaceships and whatnot kind of blew the feel of the game for me.
In response to Superreborn, a year ago some Paizonians, spearheaded by Lilith, tried to start up a Paizonian guild on Velen, but it kind of fizzled. You can check or maybe post on this thread to see if anyone is still floating around there. I think Valegrim was really ready to do stuff or help out as the case may be. I made an alt, but didn't get far.

I was wondering: is there anybody who actually plays WoW a lot like me (as in has maybe a 70 or two or at least plays regularly). I play really only on Bronzebeard, but also occasionally on Fenris, and I would also be willing to make a new character if I knew someone else played on another server.
I'm messing around with trial accounts right now, until I get a job in the summer so I can actually afford an account.

There is an odd thread about this several pages long. There was even a Paizonian guild on a Horde sever.
I do play, but I burn out to the point were I have to take like 3 to 6 month breaks. I just can't play "hardcore" I've played for three years and only have a 60 rogue, 40 hunter, and 40 pally.
I have a hard time dealing with farmers, dumb asses, fanatics and the other kind of people that tend to pop up. I know it takes all kinds, but F.
I also wish solo play was more of an option.

You must play Alliance. The Draenei are really incredibly stupid, and there's not much disagreement on that. However, the Draenei are the only ones with spaceships; the new Blood Elf areas are fantastic, and I understand that the BC endgame material is really brilliant.
I have a tauren druid I occasionally revisit. Planning to renew my subscription when the semester ends.

Fizzban wrote:I also wish solo play was more of an option. You do realize that it's the definitive massively multiplayer game?
Solo play is absolutely an option; it's just nowhere near as fun as the alternatives. If you don't want to party with other people, Oblivion might be more your style.
I do realize that, and I do like party play. However other players can be a pain in the ass (which is a given. it happens.) but the biggie I dont have 4 hours to get a party, get everyone ready and to the instance, then go through the instance. Not to mention tpk, tpk with no self rezzer, in pvp other faction ganking you.
I wish you could level with solo play at high levels without farming for hours on end, or partying was quicker which is the people not the games fault.
It's a good game I just burn out on it quickly. I have a friend with 4 70s mage rogue priest warrior. No clue how he didn't die in real life.

WoW annoys me these days. I wish the people on the roleplay servers would take it a little more serious and actually roleplay -also the graphics are rubbish, its starting to feel like a retro game lol! It would be great if it looked as sexy as Lineage or something like that.
Plus you should be able to change sides so you could have a good orc etc...
Maybe the next expansion will sort things?
They really need to do WoW2.

We're on a non-PVP server so we have both horde and alliance alts. The blood elves didn't do much for us either, I'm afraid. Feels like hanging at the country club with Muffy and Biff. ;)
I think you are probably right about endgame material. Unfortunately, my girlfriend and I are pretty casual players--no guild, thus no dungeons (unless they are so low level we can duo them as a spur of the moment thing). no pvp, no going for the leet sets or standing around Shattrath comparing stats with other high-level players. So really not much in there of interest for us. I know that we are in the minority on this--most of what I have heard about Burning Crusade has been how much people like it, but it was a total flop at our house. It will be something we end up pushing through to get enough levels in the hope that Wrath of the Lich King will have something in it we like.
As example, we're both level 61 and are questing in Silithus, because it's more fun for us than Outland, though Silithus is far from the most interesting zone in the game.
Valegrim
well; we have a Paizo guild and an a Paizo Wow thread; there was a bunch of interest at first, but now there are only two of us playing. I am going to petition for the guild leader to be removed as he hasnt been on in months; seems only fair.
I have lots of characters on many servers; done and played most everythign; havent played everything in burning crusade yet; just leveled up there; didnt really look around a lot; I have more fun at the mid levels.
I think the Paizo server is Velen; is that right guys, I just log in and dont think about it; anyway; if you are on velen or want to start up there; we have a guild; not much of one, but we do; my Priestess is Mahoe, trollop lvl 49 atm. I also just started a new pally blood elf; level 10 and have a 31 rogue on this server.

I agree; I have a toon on a roleplay server and the only ones I see roleplay are people dressed as pirates; love the pirates because of that; to everyone else it is just same old crap; was really dissappointing.
hehe spoiler; horde are the good guys; humans are the evil bad guys heeh but we have known this for years; is funny that the quests threads tell you that; the orc leader has been saying since beta not to attack the alliance, but the alliance guys are always pushing war wtih the horde; and the undead are really on their own side and want to kill everyone, their quests are not for kids; full of death and murder.

I play, but really should quit and probably will soon. It has no balance at all. It's all about the 70s and how much they can mess with people. I saw a ?? undead hordie (a 70 probably) in Moonbrook yesterday with his lackey level 18 hordie friend taunting everyone to attack. What a joke. My level 16 mage would have taken on that level 18 hordie if I knew the godling wouldn't whack me just so his friend didn't lose. That's WoW in a nutshell. There's no accountability in one's actions, no real loss unless you count the time it takes to corpse run (and I don't), and no real risks associated with choosing to attack someone. If it were my game, the first thing to go would be the stupid name tags and level identifiers. Now let's see how people respond to the idea of PvP when you don't know just how powerful the person you're about to attack is. There's so many glaring deficiencies in MMOs today.
I've got a level 56 gnome, and other than the Outlands where I can finally acquire training for the skills I have (which I have to be level 58 to even be able to enter), there's really not much left I haven't seen. Admittedly, at first, the game was a blast, not knowing what to expect and with everything a new experience/learning curve, but most games are like that at first. Now that I've seen and been virtually everywhere on the planet, there really is no reason for me to want to do all that all over again with another character. Sure, the quests may change or I could try again with my undead hordie (whoopie!), but in the end, it's still all about the grind to get to 70 so you can at least be as powerful as everyone else in the game that matters. LOL.

I play a lot. I have two 70's and a handful of lowbies that I never play. I play on a PvE server (which means that you have to put up a PvP flag to be able to be attacked by the other faction, so you only get "ganked" when you choose to be) with a bunch of IRL friends and we are always on Ventrilo, so I basically consider WoW as a much funner type of bowling. As in... something fun to do while my friends and I hang out together.
My two toons: Fallacy and Schnukums. If you happen by the Hyjal server, feel free to say hi.
Unless, of course, you play Alliance. Then you should feel free to run away. :)

I've been playing WoW since day one, and still quite enjoy it. One of the things I really like about the game is how it sort of two different games.
Phase 1: The initial playthrough to level 60. There's a lot of exploration going on here, and you can certianly hit level 60 without ever joining up in a party. Some fun little quests and story lines and pretty (not ground breaking anymore, but still pretty!) graphics to check out. AND: The fact that there's WAY more content than you can really see on one character playthrough means you can play several characters and still enjoy this phase of the game.
Phase 2: The endgame stuff. The game changes at this point from an "explore and quest" model to something more tactical, really, be it doing PVP stuff or group dungeons for 5 players or the bigger 10/25/40 person raid dungeons. Sure, the first time through one of these areas it's still fun and new... but the point of the game at this point isn't to find new stuff. It's more like a sport. A team sport. You know what has to be done; the environment is always the same, but the interplay of tactics between characters and the awards you get in the form of loot varies. Like a football game, for example. Each football game takes place in the same field, but the tactics and actual game play itself is what's fun, not the exploration of the field. And since every time you score a point (aka kill a monster) you get treasure and prizes, it adds a really addictive level of collection to the whole thing.
Then, every few months, they'll release a content patch that temporarily "resets" the game back to phase 1 for a bit as you get to explore new areas before reverting back to Phase 2 style play.
And once every few years, Blizzard releases an expansion. They've only done one so far, but the second should be coming along later this year. A new expansion increases the level cap by 10, which again sets you back to Phase 1, with exploration and new quests and all that to keep you entertained for quite a while... weeks, at least. And upon hitting the new level cap, you go to Phase 2, but now there's a huge number of new endgame stuff to do.
After a time of playing at Phase 2, the game does start to feel repetitive, but not in a really BAD way, to me at least. I kind of view it at this point as the same kind of repetition you'd feel from playing chess every night for an hour or two; it exercises the mind but after a while it's actually kinda relaxing to fly around on a dragon, farm for crafting materials, and run through dungeons and PVP battles.
It's certainly not, in my view, a D&D killer any more than ANY idle-time passtime entertainment is a D&D killer; watching movies or sports or flying kites or reading or whatever. It's a different enough experience that they scratch different itches.
Anyway... if anyone out there in Paizoland is on the Azuremyst server, or wants to drop by and say hi to me... my main character's name is Shensen (night elf hunter). I'm usually online for a few hours around 10:00 to midnight or thereabouts (pacific time).
OH! ONE MORE THING! Perhaps the GREATEST KEY to enjoying Warcraft? Find some folks you like to play with and form a guild. Associate with them, and if their style of play matches your prefered style of play, you can pretty much ignore the rabble and the lunacy and the weirdos. Especially if you do like I do and turn off the general chat channel. The "ignore" feature is handy too.
At that point, the game basically turns into a chat room that lets you also kill monsters and take their stuff. Which, as it turns out, is pretty fun.

The thing that cracks me up is that no matter how high level you get, someone is always going to tell you to go get some meat.
I'm standing in another dimension on the floating remains of a planet that has been blown to smithereens, with gear whose sheer mass could generate its own gravitational field, ready to unleash destruction, and some lady is sending me to the pond to kill eels.

I play a bit on one of the European servers, mostly as a way to hang out with my brother and some friends from back home. Due to the time difference, we only play a couple of hours each weekend (late for them, really early for me) - so, no guilds, no dungeons, no PvP.
We started a new bunch today, and a bunch of level 20 jackasses were hanging out in the orc/troll start zone challenging everyone to duels. Blah. :(

LOL! Too true. You know, that lady needs those eels to put the planet back together again because she's the one that blew it up, but you go get them for me, won't you please sonny?

I've started piggybacking my wife's account. I still haven't decided whether or not I actually want to bother reactivating my old account yet. Anyway:
Veranda
Human Rogue
Ravenholdt Server (RPPvP)
Yes, it's female. Yes, it's Alliance. I like playing Alliance on PvP servers because playing Horde is too easy. Besides, SOMEONE has to take those pompous Hordies down a notch.
The Black Bard
I have a few characters on the Suramar server: Cinderbottom; All Epic 70 Tauren Hunter, Tarrasque; 55 Tauren Warrior, and Verdigrace; 65 Troll Mage. I got a few others, but they arent impressive, although Kudo's to anyone who gets some of their name references. Ashardalona, Aurashnee, Cindertop, Heartscar.
Valegrim
Well, I have all kinds of characters all over the place; even on Bronzebeard; been playing since beta; am thinking to move to Warhammer Online when it comes out for a change of pace.
I have played both sides; done almost everything though there is a lot of content yet to explore and do even for me with the new expansion and all; might hang out and try the upcomming death knight.
I forget which servers I most frequent; nathrezim maybe; not sure; we keep moving around so have guys all over the place.

My goal is to have 4 level 55+ characters (each on a different server) before Wrath of the Lich King so that I can make 4 Death Knights (since you're limited to 1 per server). I'm not doing too bad so far, especially considering that I can pay to transfer some of my characters to other servers in order to get the rights to make a Death Knight there too.
Currently, these are my front runners (level 30+):
Scarlet Crusade (RP)
Banekblod - 70 Dwarf Rogue
Panderbrook - 70 Human Warrior (actually my wife's character)
Vlastig - 64 Human Warlock
Aedus - 43 Blood Elf Rogue
Volanth - 34 Draenei Shaman
The Venture Co. (RP-PvP)
Gruud - 44 Orc Hunter
Risan - 36 Blood Elf Paladin
Emerald Dream (RP-PvP)
Sarna - 40 Human Warrior
Alterac Mountain (PvP)
Analiya - 33 Draenei Mage
Velen (PvE)
Fatespinner - 31 Blood Elf Mage
I'm currently on Scarlet Crusade and Venture Co. most often, though I've been playing some of my lower level characters lately. Once Wrath of the Lich King comes out, Panderbrook will be getting transferred to another server so my wife can have her Death Knight and I will probably transfer Vlastig out somewhere as well. Gruud is the one I'm currently focusing on in my spare time. I expect he'll be 55+ before November. I'll probably take him all the way to 60 and at least get him into Outland. Then I'll start working on Sarna again (probably).

Playing since release.
On Fenris (PvE)
Timberius - 80 Tauren Druid (resto/moon turkey dual-spec) currently in Ulduar.
Stormwrack - 80 Orc Shaman (resto/enhancement dual-spec) also currently in Ulduar (though more PuGing).
Iggwilv - 80 Blood Elf Warlock (new 80, dont really do much with her except make flasks and hope for an elixir master proc ;) )
Kilsek - 71 Troll Hunter (Marksman) unguilded for when i want downtime from guild stuff. One of my oldest toons
on Drak'Tharon (pvp)
Rechargeable - 71 Dwarf Priest (Shadow atm) one of my oldest toons, also a server hopper (5 servers so far).
Im an alliance reroll essentially only after taking years to finally convince my RL pals to go horde.

Well, now Jedit is an 80 warlock and Thetiefling is my latest 'main'. Man, I still have too many alts. Anyway, I encourage people to check out the latest patch content: the Argent Tournament and other raids and group instances. The Test of Champions, normal difficulty, can be done with a fairly fresh group of five level 80's and rewards gear that equals or exceeds most heroic instance rare drops, with a loot table that should allow for 3-5 gear pieces for each class-talent spec, allowing for multiple runs. It also has a heroic difficulty level for players who are experienced heroic-runners.
Even if you can't find a group, the grounds outside the instance provide new dailies that give nice gold rewards and faction; you can work through some preliminary quests to represent your home race and later your faction's other races as well. This has the late-game benefit of building faction with those 5 races, just in case you want the reputation without the runecloth farming, etc.
