Dajobas Mulalai CAH! Dajobas Nuurami JAH!
Bags a spot in your Razor Coast PbP whenever it finally comes out...
;)
Speaking of which... any chance you're starting up another PbP soon? I have an interesting (read: strange than most people probably wouldn't let me play, but luckily we both seem to think on the same page...) idea for a Character I wanna use.

Man I'd love to bro, but I am flat out now. Perhaps when things lighten up I will cave, but I am already running four (!) games. What's the concept out of curiosity?

What's the concept out of curiosity?
Well as usual I have about 50 Bajillion concepts running around in my head and no outlet to play them all!!!
The two big ones I am throwing around at the moment are both a little weird, although I also have some more mundane (at least by my standards) ones I am focusing on as well.
First Concept:
Is a Druid.
I'm really not a big fan of Druids, having only ever made one back in 2e and never actually playing it. The article in Dragon 357 p.90 about Plant Companions really struck a chord with me however and I have been toying with different builds for using it.
In my current fixation with it I am leaning towards a Shifter as the Race, but still heavily contemplating just going Human (unless I can find some other weird and wonderful Race to go with - Utarhi spring to mind as I built the Plant Companions into them as a Base Model).
Second Concept:
Is a Gnome (either Whisper Gnome or Golarion Bleachling) Fighter/Companion of the Dead.
The Companion of the Dead is a PrC from Dragon 315 p.38 built specifically for Gnomes. For some reason it was one of those PrCs that just jumped out and screamed at me to use it (incidently, there is also a Shark Cultist PrC in the same article that I think would fit Dajobas perfectly as a kind of elevated rank and file Cultist, not quite on the level of the Dalangs).
Other things I am tossing around:
* I really want to use the "Eldritch Warriors" Alternate Class Features from Dragon 355 p.92 in some kind of Build (one of the Companion of the Dead Builds actually uses them, but I'm not sure I'm happy with it).
* I also really like the "Divine Sorcery" Feat from Dragon 343 p.88 which I wish I had of remembered when I made my last Sorcerer Cordelia Chrichton as it would have been perfect to have the Divine Sorcery of Sarenrae coursing through her veins.
* The "Rogue Modron" Race from Dragon 354 p.43 also interests me a lot.
* A Dwarven "Mountain Ghost Ninja" from Dragon 348 p.86 is another concept I've been kicking around for a little while.
* A couple of the "Thrall of" PrCs from the various Dragons are something I'd like to take a look at as well, specifically Malcanthet, Dagon & Pazuzu.
* I'm also a big fan of the "Planetouched Races" from Dragon 350 p.50 as well. I am currently playing a Celadrin Warlock by the name of Sabriel Angelfire who is a reworking of an older Pen & Paper Character. I am also playing an Azerblood Fighter by the name of Jock McStrap in our current Pen & Paper game. I wouldn't mind playing a D'hin'ni, but what I'm really itching to play is a Worghest.
* I like the "Umbragen Shadow Soulknife" from Dragon 330 p.42 as well, but don't really know how to incorporate it into anything.
* Some form (any form) of Yuan-Ti Pureblood is something I've always wanted to play, as I am a big fan of Snakes (which share the distinction with Panthers as being my favourite animals).
* Some of the "China Mieville" stuff from Dragon 352 is quite interesting as well.
* I've recently been looking at the Hellreaver PrC from Fiendish Codex II: Tyrants of the Nine Hells p.92. Looks good.
* I Love the Paragon Classes from Unearthed Arcana, but my current DM hates them and I haven't found a build I like them with lately. Still I will always keep them in mind.
* The "Knight of the Raven" from Expedition to Castle Ravenloft is another PrC I'm interested in utilising.
* I am also quite fond of the idea of playing a Kobold, although the -4 STR penalty is just too much in my opinion and is the main reason I've stayed clear. -2 is fine, I can live with that, but -4 sits wrong with me. If I did make one, it would most probably use the Colour Variants from Classic Monsters Revisited and would probably have either the Dragonwrought and Dragon Wings Feats or be a Draconic Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple.
* There are also currently two more Dragon Disciples I am working on at the moment.
The First is an Elven Ranger/Green Draconic Sorcerer/Green Dragon Disciple.
The Second is an Umbral Draconic Sorcerer/Umbral Dragon Disciple, I just don't quite know yet how to incorporate the Umbral Dragon abilities into the Classes yet. The Umbral Dragon is from Pathfinder 11 (Curse of the Crimson Throne Chapter 5 Skeletons of Scarwall) p.82.
* Some kind of Half-Fey or Feytouched is a possibility as well.
* To round out my stable of Sorcerers, I also like the idea of an Aberrant Sorcerer as well.
That's just the tip of the Iceberg unfortunately. As you can see I have a LOT of weird sh!t floating around in my head!
EDIT: Man that took me nearly an hour to write... I am supposed to be re-formatting and reloading a computer... wish I hadda got it started while I wrote this now!
Patrick Curtin
Man, I don't think I am going to be able to squeeze all that into a game! :P
You have a lot of great ideas though. And if RC is as good as I hope it will be, I just might do a PbP version. Of course Opal is my attempt at Pirate/Polynesian/eldritch horror/dinosaur/Mesoamerican goodness ...LOL

Couldn't help peeking Flash. Great concepts. Volodni would be best druid class. Played one once with vow of poverty and took Greenbound Summoning as a feat. One of my favorite characters ever.
Hey yeah go ahead. I only spoilered them 'cause of the length, anyone of you guys is free to look.
OK, you got me... What is a Volodni and where can I find them?
Greenbound Summoning? Tell me more...
There's also a Warforged variant in one of the Eberron books (not sure which, they're all out in the garage at the momnet, except the Campaign Setting) that is like a Green 'Forged... very Druidy and sh!t. It's something I also want to look into.
Mark Thomas 66 RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16
Volodni is a plant type humanoid race from Forgotten realms setting. Plant type so immune to mind affecting spells, anything with person or animal in the title, cold resistance, barklike green skin so bonus to natural armor and only take half damage from all piercing weapons, as well as racial bonus to hide in forest/jungle areas.
Best of all is the immunity to critical hits and sneak attack due to foreign anatomy.
All for a +2 level adjustment.
Greenbound summoning
It's a feat from Lost Empires of Faerun that automatically applies the
greenbound creature template to all animals you summon using summon
nature's ally.
The template grants the plant type (immunities!), +6 natural AC, DR
10/magic and slashing, fast healing 3, +4 to grapple, tremorsense, +6
Str, +2 Dex, +4 Con... and some other less important stuff.

OK, I got the Volodni... they actually don't look too bad, although the +2 LA is a bit daunting (hopefully with PFRPG Rules however that would be reduced to +1 LA which sits much easier with me).
I don't have Lost Empires of Faerun though.
Is it possible you could e-mail me the exact wording of the Greenbound Summoning Feat. flash_cxxi@hotmail.com
Cheers
EDIT: Never mind, I realize now you don't actually have it 'cause I just found the Thread using Google from whence you cut and pasted your reply... ;)

Some pretty scary stuff!
Holy Snappin' Duck Sh!t!!! And a Druid can take that at 1st Level! Christ on a Popsicle Stick that's so overpowered it's not funny! Sweet Zombie Jesus one summoned animal would make mincemeat of an opponent at lower levels!

Thought you'd like it. Even better when you can summon 1d3 or 1d4+1 creatures. Take Ashbound summoning (doubles the time they stick around) and just to be nasty sudden maximize.
4 dire weasels whith ridiculous CMB's that attach on a grapple and do con damage every round or wolves that trip, then entangle while penning you in with walls of thorns. Even better is that with extend spell and persistent spell they can follow you around for 24 hours
At the beginning of each day you call up an honor guard of badass animal companions.
It's a bad day to mess with nature.

Yeah I already know about Ashbound Summoning. I can't believe that they Stack!

Holy.
Frikkin'.
Moley.
And that's a LEGAL feat?!?!?!?
And here some people gripe that some of the OTHER feats are 'Too overpowered'!
I love it! (I would QUIT the game if my 1st lvl PC got it used against HIM by the DM, but still,...) Wowsers!
Hey Flash and all, since your on an idea kick and all, I need help finishing up my PC for another PbP game. It's my little half-elf Sha'ir for Mothman's 'Howl of the Carrion King'. We've started the game, but I'm having SERIOUS trouble finishing my lil guy.
We are using 3.5 rules set. I took half-elf for the bonus to Diplomacy (which the Sha'ir rolls on behalf of his Gen to negotiate whether or not he receives the spell he wants.) (At 1st lvl his DIplomacy is +9 = with 4 ranks, 3 from high Cha, and +2 Racial bonus)
My problem is I can't decide on my second Trait, and my Feat.
I haven't found a feat that will let me boost my overall Caster level, (although I did find one that lets you pick a signature spell at each level and you can cast that one spell at +1CL.)
I thought about SKill concentration feat for the extra +3 to Diplomacy,
ANy ideas? You seem to be full of great thoughts on building! Any fresh thoughts would be great!

Sure I'll take a look.
Are you using the 3.5 Rules for Sha'ir from Dragon 315? I always thought that the rules for the Gen fetching their Spells for them was weird and annoying that you could occasionally not get your Spell if your Diplomacy Check wasn't high enough. For this reason alone I would seriously consider any and everything that could possibly give you a Diplomacy Boost.
I'll take a look over the character though and see what I think you should take.

LOL. Plus, there is no reason a DM has to agree to it. It's from a campaign-specific book, and those have always been kinda sketchy.

Yeah true, but I'm of the opinion that a lot of the Feats that are released in specific Campaign Settings are actually fair game for other Settings.
Take Daylight Adaptation as a perfect example: there is no reason that someone can't take this in say Greyhawk or Eberron. Just 'cause it's in the FR Setting shouldn't exclude it from those others.A case can be made for numerous others as well: Luck of Heroes being one I can think of right off the top of my head, Dauntless is another.
I agree that there are definately some Feats that are keyed specifically to a CS, but even some of those can be tailored to other CSs.

Oh I'm not saying there aren't good feats in those books, but I am saying that the game balance on some of the feats put forth in those books was a mite sketchy. My personal opinion is that the campaign books weren't given as much editing as they should have in regards to game balance. You can yoink anything out of campaigns as far as I care, it's the power bump that worries me, not the campaign location.
You know me, I like to give players what they want, but giving a 1st level character a posse of daily bad-azz animal companions? Then I either have to give the other players something similar or there is a lot of tension in the group. Plus I have to scale up all the encounters to make them a challenge. It just seems to break the game cohesion to me ...

Some interesting stuff..
That's fair enough. I tend to think that a player should be able to create the character he wants to, but I do agree with you that there are some Feats (amongst other things) that do tend to break the system compared to supposedly equal [insert Feat/Spell/Whatevers here].
That also being said, I'm not a big fan of people just going out and searching the net for uber builds to copy and bring to a game. Taking ideas from a build to taylor to something you are doing for yourself I have no problem with, simply copy/pasting somone else's broken character I do.You've seen my characters. Thay tend to run to a given background and I build the mechanics around that. If there is something that I want to try out, but doesn't quite fit the concept, I find a way to make it fit, or if I can't then I don't use it. It's as simple as that.
Given the fact that I have had more character deaths in our Pen & Paper games than any other person (which is up to 9 strong at times) should tell you that while my builds may look good, they don't always pan out in the big scheme of things.

OK I've taken a look and here are my suggestions.
TRAIT:
Classically Schooled: Your apprenticeship or early education was particularly focused on the direct application of magic. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Spellcraft checks, and Spellcraft is always a class skill for you.
I like this because you can use Spellcraft to Identify Spells as they are being Cast, which in turn allows your Gen to Search for Spells not on your Known Spells List.
It also fits in with your background of having a Private Tutor.
FEAT:
At this stage I am still leaning very heavily towards taking Skill Focus: Diplomacy, as you really need to succeed on those Diplomacy Checks, especially if you are sending your Gen off for a couple of hours to search for a Divine Spell.
I will still keep looking for you, but I really think this is going to be the go. Once you get to 3rd Level you can look at taking other Feats (but Negotiator is another I would also recommend for the additional +2 to Diplomacy).
Ragadolf
Thank you Flash.
I was already SERIOUSLY considering the SKill FOcus for Diplomacy. It would just really stink to miss that needed roll right before combat,... ;)
BUt, and correct me if your reading it differently, In the ORIGINAL 2.0 setting, you could only send your gen to search for spells you knew, or had identified. In the 3.5 Dragon 315 (which IS what we are using here!) I read it to be that you can send your Gen for ANY spell that you can think of and ask for, even a Divine spell, whether you know it or not (is a 'known' spell) only affects the length of time it takes to be fetched. Yes?
Thanks for the tips! Cuz I REEELY need to get this guy done.

OK here goes...
I'm not sure on how it worked in 2e, because I never had Al-Qadim (even though it was one of the Settings I wanted). This is how it boils down in 3.5 though:
* At 1st Level, you can choose five 0-Level Spells (whether they be Cantrips or Orisons) and three 1st Level Spells (be they Arcane or Divine) as your Known Spells.
* If you want your Gen to retrieve one of your Known Spells it takes them 1d4 + spell level rounds to do so.
* If you can succeed on a Spellcraft Check to Identify a Spell, then you can ask your Gen to retrieve any of those Spells for you, but it takes 1d6 + spell level minutes.
* Asking a Gen to retrieve any Divine Spell (whether it is from your Known Spells or simply Spellcraft Identified) takes 1d6 + spell level hours.
You can only add Divine Spells to your Known Spells List from the Domains of Air, Chaos, Earth, Fire, Knowledge, Law, Luck, Sun and Water, but if you can Spellcraft Identify Spells from other Domains then you can retrieve them as well.
You then add Bonusses to your Diplomacy Check (or Modifiers to the DC) depending on certain criteria.

Wasn't there a 3.5 update for Al-Qadim in Dragon Magazine? Do you remember the issue?
Yeah #315, that's the rules he's using. He just wanted clarification of how the system works. I find it to be much too convoluted compared to the simplicity of the Wizard/Sorcerer/Cleric Models. Obviously once you can understand it properly it makes some sense, I just think there's a lot of unneccesary dice rolling involved.
Patrick Curtin
good stuff
Oh I know you are a good Narrativist player Flash, and even better, one with an excellent grasp of the rules, something I am not blessed with. I know, even with an optimized build you wouldn't break the game,in fact you are more likely to take 'flavorful' skills and feats than some. I agree and I always try to accomidate the players, they are the reason for the game, so I want them happy. If I was running a one-on-one situation with a druid character, I could easily accomadate the build. My only fear is that if it was in a group setting the excess power that feat combo seems to bring to the table could end up causing hard feelings. If everyone agreed beforehand that it was OK, I'd have no problem with it.

Heya Patrick, gotta question,
How strict/flexible/creative/imaginative are you with regards to spell effects?
I'm thinking things like a cold spell, aimed at the rain-covered ground, making it icy and slick, at least in a 5' area.
Or hitting people standing in the rain soaking wet with an electrical spell should be easier?
(Although hitting a person with an electrical spell just by hitting the puddle they are standing in might be asking too much.)
Things like that.
Reason I ask is sometimes I actually get creative with spell uses, and how much flexibility you allow will affect how much I try to get away with,... I mean how creative I get! ;)

You think like I do. Usually I make save DC's for electrical spells higher in the rain, and lower for fire spells. Fun stuff like that.

Hey, I am nothing if not flexible. Certainly a cold spell should affect any water thereabouts. I encourage this 'thinking outside the box.' As a DM, I probably have the loosest interpretations of rules. I want us all to have fun, and if that calls for creative interpretations, then so be it..
