Rise of the Runelords

The Gluttonous Tome may very well have the single coolest method of artifact-destruction I've ever seen. :) I don't like to think about what the smoke would do to the taste, though.

The Exchange

I agree. That artifact begs for a campaign itself.

Has anyone thought about using any of these items yet and if so where are they considering putting them in the campaign?

Dark Archive

Still looking over it, but I might sneak one or two in somewhere

whats the link for the web enhancement?

Direct linky here.

Heh. Thanks. This was one of my favorite magical creations. I'm glad this still made it into Pathfinder (it got cut from HMM cause of length, and it brought a happy-tear to me eye to see it on the web enhancement).

In the original manuscript Mammy had one of the sections of the Gluttonous Tome, Yap had another, and the hag sisters had the third.

*quirks eyebrow* Are you seriously trying to make us believe that you tried to sneak an entire second Runelord into the AP? -.O;

Dare I ask what else lurks in that head of yours? You are a master at tapping the dark side of D&D lol

Ha! I did in fact try to crowbar another runelord in there!

In fact I begged to have the PC who claims the Tome have to show down with Zutha in a dreamscape near the end of the Path, and if they eat it, the PCs are dealing with two runelords instead of one. James, very wisely, was like "whoa, that's crazy and evil and far too mean." :-)

ALL YOU PATHETIC PCS SHOULD THANK THE GODS JAMES JACOBS KEEPS ME ON A LEASH!!! MUUUUUHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAAHAAHAHAH!

Oh, the destruction means are all the editors though...that's friggin awesome.

Which raises the question: what did you intend it to be originally?

Ha, didn't think to include any...I was so excited about Zutha eating up a PC! ;-)

I'm contemplating "staging" events for a homebrew'd AP that would take place sometime around AP 4.

Specifically, PCs in AP 1 will discover 1 of the sections, as will PCs in AP 2 (there should be plenty of room for this, given what was released as part of the 2nd AP preview in Pathfinder #6) and hopefully AP 3.

My homebrew AP will revolve around a new batch of PCs who are set against the current owners of the various sections of the Grimores (former PCs, now irreconcilably evil, having been corrupted by the their own portion of the Tome.) The three former PCs war amongst themselves to obtain all three sections of the Tome, as well as to literally devour their former-PC enemies. I see the PCs being brought in initially as pawns, and later as heroes against the Tome-controllers. Side quests involve finding a way to destroy the Tome, perhaps even some king-making, so a suitable monarch is handy, as well as trying to keep one of the Tome-owners from getting all three pieces.

Now that would be one hell of an AP

Yeah, the whole fuel to cook food for a hungry king is great. He's the anti-glutton.

For some reason it make me think of a certain burger chain's mascot...(He's always giving food away, and how can he eat through the big plastic head?)

But I'm confused: wouldn't the artifact be pretty much fire-proof, normally? So does it detect the fasting king nearby and his dinner in the pot and say: "aww shucks, I gotta burn!"

O_o ???

I love the Tome--it's really vivid. I have to wonder, though, why Zutha divided his phylactery into three parts all of which are needed to restore him. This seems self-defeating.

One possible reason would be that it cannot be destroyed until it's together. Zutha could then have designed it so that a person who has been thoroughly corrupted by one part would be able to easily find the others, whereas a good person who merely had possession of it wouldn't have access to that ability. That would make it more likely to be brought together for purposes other than its immediate destruction.

I would also greatly reduce the range on the coming-together behavior, because I like the idea of having two pieces in the party at once. "You know, it'd be a lot more powerful if it was rejoined." "No! Mine! Unless...unless you mean rejoined and given to me. I'd consider that." "No!"

(I have run for a *lot* of PC parties who were sure they could use an evil thing like this for good. Some of them were even correct.)

I've decided if I use it to give it a regenerative ability.

The hag sisters are at Hook Mountain. Yap is the small faerie who asks the PCs to help at Whitewillow.

I have to say, it's a brilliant, twisted magic item, but it *so* does not belong in HMM--that would have been the immediate end of the AP as written, at least for my group.

Mary

Ahh yes I think I know the faerie in question. (But not the hag sisters, I haven't read in depth that module yet and wont until I start chapter 1.
That means all 3 sections are in hook mountain? Hmmm, think I'll move them about a bit. If my players want it they'll have to work for it lol.
Thanks for the info Mary,

Yeah, originally, all three sections of the tome were in Hook Mountain. I cut all of that out of the adventure partially because it felt too convenient, but MOSTLY because the campaign's about Karzoug, not Zutha. Introducing the tome derails the campaign too much.
