Of all Frank Trollman's ideas, the one I love best is the thesis that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
I thought that was Einstein.
Frank's contribution was the second part, about the answer to every question being "giant frog."
CAPTAIN KIRK, picking himself up off the floor next to his chair: Spock! What was that?
MISTER SPOCK: Giant frog, sir.
KIRK: Where did it ... come from?
SPOCK: Giant frog.
LIEUTENANT UHURA, frightened: What does it mean, sir?
KIRK: Giant frog, lieutenant.
DOCTOR McCOY, over the com: What in blazes is going on up there?
KIRK: Giant frog, bones. Are you all right?
McCOY: Giant frog.
KIRK, turning to Scotty: Status report.
COMMANDER SCOTT: Ach! Me poor giant frog. Cap'n, we'll nae be able to giant frog for longer than giant frog, not until I can get the giant frog back on line, an' that'll take me giant frog.
KIRK: Spock, see if you can help Mr. Scott with that.
SPOCK: Aye aye, sir.

See, Modrons I understand, demons, angels, devils, etc, I get.
How the heck does ultimate embodiment of ~All That Is Chaos~ translate into... Psychotic Frog?
lol I think you answered your own question. If we don't get it, that can only mean their chaotic mission was a success, don't you think? =D

What if slaad are a different kind of Protean? Egg-planting, chest-bursting monsters ... they're the "aliens" of D&D! ^_^
Just wait till the my movie, "Alien vs Kirby*!"
*I have no intention of making the movie.

While I can't say for certain it was an influence for the Slaadi, the Ogdoad of Hermopolis in Egyptian mythology was based around a pairing of several male and female deities, with the males based on frogs, and the females based on serpents. Collectively these proto-gods created the universe from the primordial waters that preceeded it.
The serpentine aspect of that mythology was what I went with (including derivatives of some of their names) for the proteans, while it's possible that the slaadi may have likewise been partially inspired (or it's just a cool coincidence with a frog/primordial waters of chaos motif spread across the ancient near east).
