Depending on if you accept the Generation 2 comic series from the mid nineties, and the more recent dreamwave comics that built off of it, as "canon", then Optimus always had a mouth. The faceplate is armor to protect it. In that all transformers have vaguely humanoid, if mechanical, skeletal structures underneath their different cosmetic surface appearance. And Prime did have a mouth.
The guy on YouTube got it right; this movie will rock if only because its "big frikkin robots beating the crap out of each other for your entertainment". I'm hoping for more than that of course, but I know that the minimum I get will still be worth my money for explosions and robot-butt-kicking.

The one that always got me from the comics was Wheeljack's glowing super-sideburns. Remember those? On those I could deal with a good bit of revamping.
I always liked those things of his! I used to think Wheeljack and Ratchet were more than friends, perhaps the glowing super-sideburns were for Rachet to hold onto? :D

Saw the sneak preview last night. I am NOT an old school Transformer nut...Ive seen a couple dozen episodes, so take this small review with that grain of salt.
Its freaking AWESOME!
Bay (or someone) decided to change some appearances, so be ready for that. Codenames dont reflect the old cartoon's namesakes.
The screen gets REALLY busy. Do not sit in the first 3 rows or you will puke. I got back row and still had a hard time focussing on all the action. There were a lot of close shots that might have been better served as a medium shot and showed more scale/definition.
They picked the right humans to interact. Tuturro/Voigt/LaBeauf/the kids parents/the hot chick all did great with the green screen and actually pulled off acting against those giant robots. Couple fun cameos (the cool latino dude from Prison Break and the longhair Stacy Perralta lookalike from Lords of Dogtown get a few lines. Fun.) Dunno how the effects will look shrunk down to tv-size. LoTR lost a lot when tranferred to dvd (Minas Tirith).
Three lil cutscenes during the first part of the credits (two with parents, one 'other'), but no 'stinger' at the very end of the credits. Left monumentally wide open for the franchise of the century.
There, a spoiler-free review.

Okay, I'll chime in as a fan.
...
Bumblebee was not a VW beetle...
...
That was okay...
...
Cause the movie was beyond awesome.
The prime lips thing doesn't bother me. BTW: I do recall Prime NOT having lips from the old series, G1 & such.
Fave scene, spoiler-blocked for those who don't want spoiled:

Got to see this Tuesday night and LOVED IT!!! I told the guys "That was the feel good movie of the year!". Luckily, I was never into watching Transformers as a kid so any changes didn't bother me. The action FRIGGIN ROCKED! Plus, Josh Duhamel ain't too bad to look at. Loved that John Voight & John Turturro were g-men, that alone was hilarious. So I say, GO, ENJOY, GO AGAIN!
Oh, and I love that the girl wasn't a ditzy teenager who was just scared...

Finally saw it yesterday and I thought it was great! I agree with Darkmeer as to my favorite scene as well. Although I have to admit that it was a great scene when
Anyway, I also noticed that they gave Optimus a mouth. It didn't really bother me. I also noticed that they covered his mouth in the "classic look" when he was in battle.
All in all, I think it will be a big hit and definitely bring on some sequels. I only hope
By the way, there was a trailer for another movie
I thought I saw J.J. Abrams name attached to it, but didn't catch a title. Anyone know what it was?

I noticed that they did do an homage to the cartoon version of Bumblebee. It was parked next to a yellow VW Beetle in the used car lot (and it banged it with its door). Oh, and did you notice the bee airfreshener or decoration thing hanging from the rearview? Not sure if I can repeat here what it said, but it made me chuckle.

I finally found more about this on IMBD and the Scifi channel website. I didn't catch a title in the trailer because their isn't one yet, although rumors abound of something starting with "G" and ending in "odzilla". Apparently, the entire film is going to be shot through the "eyes" of folks with personally camcorders.

Your scene has the best lines in the movie for two fighting Transformers:
You wanna piece of me!?"
Megatron "No, I want TWO!"

I've heard of a remake of a 1980's movie in New York with the Statue's head in the street and a one-eyed game named "Snake"...

There is a reworking of Escape from New York in the works, but that wasn't what the trailer was for.
The trailer was for a currently untitled movie executive produced by J.J.Abrams (Lost, Alias), directed by Matt Reeves (no real work, but part of Abrams crew since his Felicity days), and screenplay by Drew Goddard (Angel/Buffy/Lost/Alias). It has a shooting title of "Cloverfield" and production of the movie hasn't actually started yet (the trailer was shot special). It apparently is a giant monster movie, but probably not an existing license. (All of this info came from different posts at aintitcool.com)

Wow . . . I just typed out a long, well thought out review of this movie, and the site ate it.
I love Paizo, and all of those that work there, but I hate with a burning passion their evil hell spawned message boards (but not those that post there).
I know how you feel. That is why, on those rare occasions when I wax poetic in a long-winded fashion, I type it up in Word first and then do the old cut and paste.

To reprise a bit . . .
My initial fears about the movie stemmed from the comments that the film makers were really focused on the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park as inspiration for the Transformers, and the leak that Bumblebee didn't speak. Plus I saw the marketing slogan "Their War, Our World," and my fear was that the bulk of the movie would be two factions of robots sluggging it out doing damage to "us" and that Bumblebee would learn that we were great guys and convince the Autobots to not kill us and leave the planet, all with minimal communication from the Transformers (i.e. most of the information we learn about the Transformers coming from some human genius that figured it all out).
Thankfully I was really off about all of this. The Transformers are honest to goodness characters, that honestly have some of the best lines of the movie.
I was really in geek heaven when
"Transform and roll out"
"Freedom is the right of all sentient beings"
"One shall stand, one shall fall."

That was a truly awesome movie. I finally saw it last night with my wife and even SHE thought it was incredible! It manages to combine all the elements of car chases, war movies, and sci-fi action all in one!
The few comedy moments were good, but the action was INTENSE! As someone who grew up with the Transformers cartoon series, I can say that these certainly aren't quite the same Transformers I remember. It seems that the director's goal was to appeal more to the "old school" Transformers fans (who are now aged 22-30) with a more grown-up movie, but still leave it relatively non-violent so that it won't traumatize all the 5- to 8-year-old children of the 22-30 year olds.
Now, when I say 'relatively non-violent' I mean that no humans are killed on-screen. There's plenty of robotic carnage, to be sure.
Also, I discovered recently

I'd have tried to hold off until the new Camaro's came out. The first car I ever owned was a 1983 Camaro, and I loved that car. The new one looks like it kicks ass.
I know what you mean I just bought a new truck, and My first car was a 79 Camaro. I bought it for 800 and spent two years fixing, changing engines, painting etc. Alas I sold it to buy the truck. I guess we all have to grow up. I want my Camaro!

Non-violent no humans are killed on screen? I think you're forgetting !SPOILER! When Scorpinoc spear that solider through the chest and slung him around, and the cracked out sound wave's flying blades of death.

huh...numerous secret service guys on air force one killed by Frenzy..and I saw at least 2 die in the street...the sorority chick in her car when it got the techno virus, and one who megatron kicked off his leg and went flying into heap about 20 feet away.

Just got back from seeing it. It was awesome. I did think it took alittle long though. I wish they could have gotten the real voices for all the characters though. I wonder how much GM paid for the rights to use only there models. My wife liked it too.. I may have to make her watch the 90' movie tonight just to show her the differences. She's only 23.
I thought Megatron looked like one of spaceship in the 90' movie as well.

BluePigeon |

NO! Prime and others without mouths (like Soundwave, Brawn etc) just have speakers near the face plate!
Transformers G1/Marvel UK/Simon Furman are all the TF canon I count! ;) :P
What have you got against robots with lips. I mean what's an alternative. Make the Tansformers look like Cyber-men?
I think I hear the Tartis now and the doctor is in the theater.

Actually, Jazz, Megatron, and Starscream's voices from the cartoon have all moved on to the become one with the Matrix . . . wait . . . two of those guys are Decepticons . . .

Actually Frank Welker, original voice actor for Megatron, provided the voice for the movie's game. They got videos of him and Optimus' voice actor at www.transformersgame.com

![]() |

Sorry Frank Welker . . . for some reason I was thinking he had passed on . . .
"but I still function . . . "
"not for long . . . "
yeah, the way the character sounds I would've thought he'd died of lung cancer until I heard that Peter Cullen tried really hard to get him in the movie.

KnightErrantJR |

Upon thinking about this, it occurred to me why I think this movie resonated with people that were fans, even though the storyline doesn't directly follow any of the several continuities Transformers has had over the years . . . then it occurred to me that that's it . . . it actually draws from pretty much all of the various versions of Transformers.
For example, from the Marvel comic:
Also, the Allspark is a variation on the Autobot Creation Matrix that Prime carried, and Shockwave was using to create more soldiers, as well as a variation of Vector Sigma from the cartoon series.
From the Marvel UK series:
From the Cartoon series:
From the Beast Wars series:
In other words, this thing wasn't really "slimmed down" so much as amalgamated from all of the best aspects of the various series over the years.
Just some thoughts.

It was garbage - more specifically, it was better than Pearl Harbor or Armageddon, but not quite as good as Independence Day or Deep Impact. Lessee...
Good points: Great CGI and... great CGI. Somewhat entertaining fight sequence at the end. Starscream, which was my favourite Decepticon from way back when, is still the coolest robot around. I did laugh at one joke.
Not-so-good points: The acting is generally unimpressive, and it is made worse by the brain-dead, painfully predictable script. The action scenes are overpopulated and indistinct. The product placement is so heavy it actually becomes really annoying. Lots of jokes, and they all suck. Megatron, who otherwise rocked, did not turn into a ginormous, flying gun. The worst, though, was the soundtrack - drippy, sentimental and obvious.
I came in really wanting to like it, and was very disappointed. A $1 movie; that means I only wasted $8.50.

I believe Jazz was originally voiced by the great Scatman Crothers, whose other memorable roles (at least in my mind) include: the voice of Hong Kong Phooey, getting axed by Jack Nicholson in "The Shining", and haggling with John Wayne in "The Shootist".

You are correct sir. He voiced Jazz in fifteen episodes, including a few that aired after his death in late 1986. He also played Sam in the Casablanca television show in the early 80's.
