This is the out of character discussion page for the upcoming play by post game, Letters from Hommlet. It's a Greyhawk game full of players either new to D&D, new to third edition, new to play by post roleplaying or all of the above. It should be a blast. Anyhow as usual this page is for comments, Q&A, etc. so that it doesn't interfere with the story on the Play by Post page. I've got character sheets for Amergin and Valegrim, but we're still waiting on one more. It should be a fun game. If any of the players want to post a blurb on who their characters are for the folks reading along I highly encourage it.
The starting area is the small town of Hommlet, still sentimentally called a "village" by those who have lived there their entire lives. Within a generation it has gone from just over 100 inhabitants guarded by a ragged watchtower to a swelling population now over 1000 with a full keep and discussion of the construction of a city wall. It enjoys a reputation as prosperous and pastoral, yet it lingers forever in the perenial shadow of evil. It is the crossroads of the stories of many great adventurers, and the center of a number of quiet intrigues.
The town lies 10 leagues south of Verbobonc (a shifty and superstitious theocracy dedicated to St. Cuthbert of the Cudgel) set amidst the Kron Hills with the Lortmil Mountains to the west and the Gnarley Forest to the east and run through by a gentle meandering river thick with predatory giant crayfish the size of aligators.
The rulers of the region are a pair of old retired adventurers, themselves a repository of tales of glory and daring, Rufus and Burne and much of the recent growth of the town is largely due to them.

BTW, I'd like a spot here, if you've got one.
Yeah, no problem. Interestingly the guy who posted originally looking for a game hasn't come back with a character yet. You're more than welcome. Go ahead and post a character (writing the stats as a spoiler will save space). We'll probably get started when you get your character done. First level character, any class and any race from any official book. Nothing with racial levels or level adjustments, but other than that it's pretty wide open. So far we have an elven paladin and a human bard. Look forward to seeing what you come up with!

How do you want me to generate? Point Buy? Rolled? I'll have him done and ready tonight, assuming you see this and get back to me. I'll have hime mostly done in any event.
Rolling usually works best for me, since point buy characters seem to always be a little too blandly optimized for my tastes. I tend to go with the following:
Roll 4d6, keep the three highest dice
Roll 7 times, keep the six highest rolls.
Allocate the six kept rolls to stats however you want.

I'm going to play a cleric (at least at 1st level - I'm thinking about working toward mystic theurge.) What God is the paladin following?
The paladin follows Corellon Larethian. A cleric will work great. Just let me know more info as you get it.

Background:
Arnulf doesn't know who his father is. His mother has never been convinced to give his identity.
Arnulf began manifesting some minor healing abilities at the age of eight years old, and quickly came to the attention of the Church of Pelor in Osnabrolt. After they determined his calling, he was sent to the Cathedral of the Sun in Verbobonc, where his gifts were made manifest, and he took his holy orders.
About a year ago, he began having visions where a glowing, winged being spoke to him about his distiny, and about things he needed to do. He exposed a doppleganger who had infiltrated the Church, supposedly acting on the words from his visions, and the Church began to believe that he was bound for greatness. Shortly after the doppleganger incident, his aura manifested, giving even greater credence to his potential.
His latest vision was clear. He was to go to Hommlet, a place near the center of much great evil, and begin his true work. His superiors in the Church were less than willing to let him take up the life of an adventuring priest, but Arnulf felt that he was acting on the orders of a higher authority, and, disobeying orders from his superiors in the Church, he packed his bags and headed off to Hommlet.
It's been a long, dusty walk, and he's only just arrived in town.
I see him as sort of having an "angel on his shoulder" - more of a roleplay/color effect than for anything truely beneficial. Still, it does give the DM the opportunity to "nudge" the party if we're being obtuse.

Thanks for the interest! Yeah, I think I've got as many folks in this game as I can handle. It was meant originally to be a solo game, but people just kept signing up. So far we have three, plus a reserved seat for the original guy who asked me to run the game for him. Plus folks have been waiting around for me to start the game forever. I owe it to them to get this boat sailin'. I'm glad to see you're interested in a game though. We've got plenty of them opening up. I greatly welcome more folks to read along and join other games or run them if they're able. Thanks again.

You guys are awesome. I love the character concepts. I think this game is going to be a blast. I'm impressed at your Greyhawk lore there Stunty. Very nice.
Anyhow the plan was to start last night, but since Stunty's offline until Sunday night, we'll start it then. Looking forward to it.

Valegrim |

hehe once i get the hang of this; I will run a game too; nice to see some many people interested.
Grim; so; what is our premise or specifically my characters premise for being in Hommlet or are you just gonna cover that in your first post; am getting jazzed up for this.
that trick with the button show/hide is darn cool; I bow to your web engineering skill.

That's awesome. I'm all about encouraging everyone that wants to to run a game. The more games the better!

I've been working on ideas to get everyone together, but if you've got your own reasons for being in town that works too. I mostly draw my stories from the loose ends and agendas of my PCs, so the more you give me to work with, the more involved you will find your character in the events that unfold. So far Brother Arnulf is there by celestial summons, believing some great evil to unfold there. Amergin is a refugee from a little known evil kingdom from and has been making his way across the world from town to town brokering his impressive bardic talents.

Thank Gary Teter for that one, it's just:
[SPOILER} blah blah [/SPOILER]

Valegrim |

Am thinking that my character more or less wanders around the world helping people until he finds evil lurking or a threat to the elfs or the gathering of some racial enimies like orcs or gobbies; got bow; will travel; could be was just wandering this area helping out peeps in trouble with things even as minor as putting on a wagon wheel just using my charisma and gather info skills to find out if any threats are lurking about, having heard that the inn/tavern is run by old timer adventurers would be a good reason to stop in a few days and hear the lay of the place and what is happening always keeping an ear and eye out for like minded people; some villages have villians that plague them and the seek heroes. Of course, being a religious and faithful arm of a diety; a dream or omen to travel a certain way is the stuff of my class too hehe along with a lawful guy following a capricious diety.

Amergin |

Fantastic! I'm thrilled to see all the interest on this game and I'm seriously thankful I got in early.
Grim,
I'm assuming you'll be creating the "official" game post in the Play by Post section. Just making sure and I don't want to think we're started and the game is waiting on me.
Wheeeeeeeee.

Amergin |

Got my post up, sorry it took so long, work took over most of my day. And just letting you guys know that I can probably get a post in on Saturday morning, but I have a wedding this weekend, so I might not be able to get back on until late Sunday. I'm loving the story so far!

Brother Arnulf |

Arnulf doesn't have any real input where we are in the story. He's not the type to get bent about someone stealing some jewels, so he's just patiently waiting for things to get settled.
While a lot of real time has passed since this plot thread started to ravel, in game terms, almost no time has passed.
Conversations are like that.
I'd like to see a little faster dialog going on, sure, but I'm okay to wait until things start swirling again.
Additionally, we're in the weekend, and from what I've been reading in a lot of other PbP areas, most people (not me, mind you, I'm checking my PbP games about 5 times a day) have more to do on the weekends than type into a computer.

Valegrim |

cool; I can grove with that; my toon is perfectly willing to accept a reasonable explaination; heck, for all we know they were stolen from somebody evil. I too would like to see an advance in the storyline and am curious if this jewel has anything to do with it so am breathlessly awaiting the next post; I work Sun and beginning of week so I usually post and check posts a lot on my breaks hehe which is more or less whenever i want to.

Amergin |

I am finding out that nothing is quite as disheartening as logging in a day later after having checked 6 or seven times and finding out nobody has posted anything in the game in the last 24 hours; guess my excitement level about this game is hirer than the others...
True, so very true.

Grimcleaver |

Sorry. I posted on a thread above about the Play by Posts on here. I had to take a break. The recent news got me really furious for a while and I wasn't really looking to run anything until I had some time to cool off first. I'm back though, so things will hopefully pick up now that the game actually has a DM again...

No problemo. I can understand your frustration. I was just hoping everyone was still into the game, I think so.
Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Grimcleaver |

Any objections to my making a psionic character?
Not at all. In fact I greatly encourage it. It's fun to play in the setting that all the various rulebooks were written for. Take advantage of it!
As for those of you who will be down for a bit, don't worry about it. Take what time you need and post when you can. No stress. Take care.
