So it says in the Spirit Guide... that the Oracle can only use spirits appropriate for there character. Is that enforced in PFS in any way?? I mean using lets say Bones ... when your CG.. doesnt make a lot of sense. So is there a ruling regarding this anywhere. I dont think it should go table by table that would be too disruptive.

So in book one section D there is the opportunity to get a Shadow Lamp from one of the survivors. So myself and others popped to the OCG site and the Archives to see what the heck that is and nada. There is Lantern with the word Shadow in it but thats a pretty high priced item for 2-3 level players. (Lantern of Dancing Shadows 41k item). So what was that intended to be ...does anyone know???

Wow its been a long time since i last was on this site. Anyway been running campaigns and in one of the campaigns i had a player that REALLLY REAAAAALLLLLLY wanted to play a gunslinger. I have always disliked board line hated this class since it release. Seeing a 9th level gunslinger gun down a 18cr lich in one round in pathfinder society play made me dislike the class even more. And... in talking to others... this seems a pretty common thing. A gunslinger makes life boring for all other players. In fact many of the other players all but refused to play because this one person was going to play a gunslinger. So i got together with my eldest son and started throwing ideas at him to fix this.

The core issue was always this... you shoot a bear with a musket and what do you get... a pissed off bear and you best get to stepping. Now extend this to a Dragon, there is no way a gun should just flat ignore the natural armor of a dragon, or plate mail because especially a musket ball just doesnt do that. But...taking away the touch mechanic makes the Gunslinger a somewhat broken fighter.

How we solved this was to do a true hit concept. So gunslinger fires and well in all likelihood hits because high touch ACs are really pretty rare. Now if he also hit the creatures base AC....cool roll full damage. But..if you only hit the monster touch AC the damage is halved. This represents the ...poke a bear concept. Did the musket ball hit the bear yes, but unless you also hit in a place that would have downed the critter the same way a spear would its still coming for you.

This change seems to have made everyone happy. Other players still get their turns to do something because the GS damage, while almost always occurring, does not keep pace with fighters vital strike and what not.

Anyway thought i would share this house rules. Its worked out really well, and everyone seems happy with it.

Liberty's Edge

I may be missing it somewhere so thought I would ask. Base form drake companion seems to be listed with a zero natural armor bonus make them much much easier to hit than any animal companion out there. I have player wanting to try the druid template allowing for drakes but he is very hesitant due to this. Was that a misprint????? If not
I can see his consern.

Liberty's Edge

So i just concluded running Wrath.... it was fun (despite my party being waayyyy to big). We even ran through the future years for the character and the world for a bit. My question is... what is the official post mortem for that campaign? has anyone written that and if so where. Just curious. I assume they took the "Hero's quickly vanish from the world" option because otherwise the rebellion in Cheliax would become an afterthought for the 20 level 10 mythic tear worshiper of good god x. But what happens to Medev....what about the left over Demons not in the campaign, at least 2 of which were written as mythic. Just curious if anything has been said or published on aftermath...officially.

Liberty's Edge

This question came up while playing with some friends in Florida on Vacation.

Unchained Summoner fixes summoner in a lot of ways
it recosts and re writes many evolution, which is good

no where does it say that an unchained summoners Eidolon only has access to those evolutions.

So what about the shadow evolutions from the advanced race guide. Are those barred from the unchained summoner.

Or the evolution not from the original APG, but from Ultimate Magic. I could not find a distinct ruling on this, but am curious. Since it was a home game i let it go, but would not mind knowing the official stance. There were some evolutions that have come out in books After the Unchained book release...are they legal?

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

This was being being discussed in a PFS thread but its a more general rules question so moving it here

"I'm not sure if the issue with Invisibility Sphere is whether a potion can affect more than the user or not. An Oil of Darkness, for example, can affect someone other than the user by them being in the radius of the effect. The issue is who does Invisibility Sphere target? The spell does not actually list a target. It's an emanation, pesumably from the caster. I'm not sure, but I think that means it can't be a potion, since it doesn't target one or more creatures. If it did target a creature, it seems likely it might be Target: you, but the description is a little vague on that point as well. As the listing exists, I don't think it's possible for a caster to target another specific individual other than themselves, so I believe that probably makes it ineligible as a potion.
its something that i really wish we could get a ruling on invisibility sphere acts as invisibility and targets one creature or object then others withing 10ft gain the benefit"

the real question boils down to , in order for a spell to be a potion must it actually have the 'target' literal in the spell tag line description or can it designate/target a 'creature' in the area such as Invisibility sphere or magical circle vs x.

every ruling i have seen lends toward magical circle vs x being legal as a potion so, invis sphere would be as well. The spell requires you to target a creature so it 'targets' per the potion requirement. Anyway setting this up for the FAQ team to look at

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Is there a list anywhere of what the representative Jewel Sages are supposed to be.

We know about the Diamond, Ruby, and Sapphire sages. What others exist?

I think we have reference for Topaz and Amethyst.. what others are out there. Do we have a list of the Gems that have sages? Oddly i am blending concept this into a Wrath of the Righteous campaign.

Liberty's Edge

Ok so i searched forums and saw the rules as to why the material costs of Tombs and Manuals are what they are. What i did not see an answer to is... who would ever do that????

who builds these things. There is near zero profit in making them. What wizard or cleric would sit down and spend 9 months making something that they can sell for basically nothing over cost. I am sure they could do something more cost effective like build a few dozen first level wands.

My family and i pondered this reality and the best we can come up with is that there is a bunch of clerics in prison somewhere who have also taken an oath of poverty.

Help... why would anyone build these. they must be so rare that only insane archmages and clerics put the time into it.

! note this was just an observation looking at the prices, none of their characters could actually pull it off !

Liberty's Edge

Ok i did look around and i could not find a ruling on this. Maybe i missed it somewhere

I have an Oracle, 9th level dual class sorcerer 1st level
i want to be able to cast a 2nd level sorcerer spell, as an oracle the spell is not a divine spell.

For a Ring of Spell Knowledge ... do i count that as a 3rd level spell or 2nd for the character. They can certainly cast second level wizard spells from a wand or scroll all day.

So thoughts? I could not find anything addressing this.

Please keep doing this. I am not a good drawer, being dyslexic, so i tend to print the maps. This will make running this so unbelievably easier. Never stop doing this!!!!!!!!!!

Liberty's Edge 2/5

So i am going to be rebuilding on one my summoners to the new unchained rules. He is 9th level so i have an extensive tracking sheet for stuff at this point. So..... what do you do with that? To you go back and re-buy items, some of which may no longer be usable? Never done a rebuild on a highish level character before.

Ok i did try to search for a tread on this, but could not find it, at least its not obvious if this has been address.

So lets say i have 3 levels of Ranger and want to retrain to Hunter.

Logically that would be a synergy class for retraining, but i dont think that has ever been said... officially. So putting it out there for clarification.

Liberty's Edge

I did not find a thread on this one so starting this.

I did not find much benefit to this one, and i was disappointed that they did not clean up earlier archetypes (like firstworlder summoner) as earlier 'Hero' type books had done. I unchained is all the rave, and rightfully so, but this came out a near the same time and i was well. underwhelmed.

so i keep getting different answers from different gms on this for season 6.

So potion of Good Hope... is this legal? Available as bard only level 3.

Potion of Life bubble. Can be cast as ranger at level 3, but druid at level 4. is that legal.

Really hoping someone official answers this one because i get a different answer almost every time i ask.

Ok so... running wrath of the righteous and ran across this little oddity
in book one, they run into an evil outsider bane long sword

in book two they run into a demon bane great axe (optional weapon fiendsplitter found by fighting a vrock)

the rules for bane..are a bit confusing, and one of the two should not be doable.

So when the say pick a subtype of outsider for bane, do we use the outsider subtypes in the monster manuals

or... do we pick a sub type like we would for a ranger

or is it either.. in which case why would you ever build something that is only demon bane.

looking forward to the answer on this one. maybe one is a misprint/ error.

So if i have the holy +2 bonus on a weapon it says it does +2d6 damage, but it does not give in UE a damage type for that. So is it just +2d6 then apply DR. Or is the damage type Holy, and i need to track it differently like flaming weapon. I could not find a ruling out there on forums on this. The base spell is Holy smite so i have always considered the damage as Holy.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

like the comment says why do one without the other. Considering all the madness gunslingers are allowed to get away with, why not throw the cavalier charge a bone. Was there comment as to why they disallowed it?

Liberty's Edge

So i am building my first cavalier in PFS an i am doing the rare Cavalier.... that is to say i am not small.

Thanks to the new undersized mount feat this a medium cavalier is now more doable.

To that end I have been trying to determine which beast he beast rider will ultimately use and i am stuck

I like both he Tiger and the Allosaurus

Both get pounce and 3 attacks, both have grab

Generally speaking the Allosaurus is tougher, better AC and it is stronger.

Tiger has a slightly better dex, and gets rake eventually, not a bad thing.

Same speed

From what i can tell the big advantage the Allosaurus has is in its available slots.

It can get rings, a belt (being able to have a belt of strength is huge) and in general looks to have the better slot options..

but... then again this is my first time running a animal companion in pfs. So ADVICE..... what have people experienced out there. Thoughts......etc...

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Ok so i checked additional resources for this book, and it mentions the traits and retaining, but nothing else.

Then i check the additional resource thread and i spotted Michael saying all of it would become legal Season 5. But usually when they do that additional resource says..everything in the book is legal with the changes below.....

So which is it. a little lost. Some of the vanities (wanderer) i would be interested in taking now that all of the faction based vanities have gone poof.

so its been ruled that if you can cast a spell as a spell like ability it counts for prestige classes.

Ok cool got it, dont really agree, but got it.

what if you can only do it once.
So say you run a scenario, and there are a few, that gives you the ability to cast a spell as a spell like ability once.
say lesser globe of invulnerability

So now, you have that power.

if you were a cleric, and wanted to become a Mystic Theurge, could you now do that?

Obviously you would never want to actually use that power, which is fine and all, but i think by RAW the answer is yes.

And some might say thats silly, but is it really any sillier than the original ruling... I am thinking not, and I would think it would be allowed for the same reason, Prestige classes are non optimal so really no harm.

anyway thought i would put it out there.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

Let me start by saying i know the RAW answer to the following question. I am posting to see if the current RAW answer makes sense, or should be modified, for the situation described.

So RAW states, you can apply the 2 archetypes to a given character as long as they do not modify the same ability. On the surface that makes sense.

I am trying to build well... Gambit i Pathfinder form. And i had until recently been a little frustrated. Using the Harrow Handbook you have the Card Caster Magus... COOL what a great start. Gets me most everything thing i was thinking of. The problem i had in the Magus build Charisma is the natural tank stat and well i dont really want to tank charisma on a charming roguish character.

Then i bought Advanced Class Guide and i see the Eldritch Scion, a charisma based Magus.. and for a moment i thought all my dreams were answered. Magus has a number of archetype combos that can be done. Alas both Card Caster and Eldritch Scion modify Arcane Pool.

That bring me to my question, because they modify arcane pool in entirely different, and not conflicting ways.

Arcane pool has 2 parts.
1. Gives you the ability to enhance your weapon with a pool of energy (int based)
2. Lets you add specific bonus to your weapon, typically for melee.

Eldritch Scion modifies number one, changing the power to charisma based.

Card Caster changes number 2. giving the character a different set of bonus to add to their ranged weapon.

Is the same ability modified, yes for sure it is. Are the modifications in conflict, absolutely not, not even slightly. So the question i have out there is this: There are a number of powers that various classes have that have many parts. Arcane Pool is really just one of a few examples, was the ruling made with that in mind? or.. was it intended to only apply to a given part of ability when it has many parts.

Thanks for your thoughts in advance

SO i searched through the threads and there is all kinds about fast bombs and two weapon fighting, rapid shot, haste etc.... good with all of that.

Let me throw a new question out there, what about fast bomb and natural attacks.

Flow is as follows

Drink Monstrous Physique

Turn into a WitchWyrd

WitchWyrds have 4 very usable hands and 4 natural attacks with said hands, which from what i can tell you gain.

So ... if you have fast bomb, in theory you could use a full attack with said hands to throw 4 bombs (maybe 5 with haste).

I could find nothing that lets me think this is not the case, but since natural attacks and fast bombs were not discussed, and they have already stated bombs work with two weapon fighting, breaking the only ranged attack concept, i am thinking this would work.

Thoughts?

Liberty's Edge

I added this question to the deadly dealer thread, but when thinking about it, it is really a different issue

I am very much thinking of building a gambit character with this magus template from the Harrow Handbook. In looking at that a question came up.

Can you by a masterwork silvered or cold iron Harrowing deck.

Before you think I am off my rocker, there is a magical item in the same book:

Deck Of Slivering Fate (13k gold) that is
+1
and metal edged
and changes the damage from piercing the slashing and doubles the effects of arcane strike.

now its more expensive than an +1 damage weapon, but the damage type shift and arcane gloves like effect account for that well enough.

All this implies that the answer could very well be yes. You could buy the deck as ammunition and apply things like cold iron and master work to it, but there are no rules in the book for doing so and no statement saying it is legal. so...... can you buy a +1 cold iron harrowing deck? is that possible?

Liberty's Edge 2/5

Ok so this might be a silly question for PFS but i was unable to find a clean answer out there for PFS.

So when you make a potion, it follow the same progression for spell like ablities

Wiz/Sorc, Cleric, Druid, Paladin, etc.......

Potions are limited to level 3 spells.

So, is a potion of Neutralize Poison (As an example) possible?

Neutralize Poison is level 4 cleric... so would not be valid

But is level 3 Druid Ranger.

so is a potion of Neutralize Poison PFS Legal?

Liberty's Edge

Do the Breath Weapons for all dragons increase their DC with HD. I ask the because breath weapons dc are not discussed at all for dragons not matched with a type, like true dragon. But there are certainly dragons out there ... with a breath weapon.... but not related to a type at all
so if you throw them the advance template, or in some other way increase their HD or CON, does the DC for their breath weapon go up or not?

Liberty's Edge

So NG 7th level Magus already have the familiar arcana, just hitting 7th level.

Faerie Dragon not available, i could not get that scenario in for this character. If i could it would be the winner, as it always is.

Options:

Lyrakien: the cute little bug is usually on such lists.

Advantages
1: Has HAND, and is build for UMD.
2. Constant freedom of movement makes it a good touch spell delivery method. 80ft perfect fly
3. high charisma+ventriloquism can somewhat make up for the natural magus tank stat...charisma.
4. Has commune

Disadvantages:
1. relatively weak Dr, no spell resistance innate
2. Relatively weak spell-like abilities. Daze, Summon inst. lesser confuse, these are all pointless fight CR 7 critters.
3. still uses strength for its attacks. so hard to hit, even with touch. -3 to start

Cassian:

Advantages:
1. Immune to cold and acid.... nice
2. Breath weapon is not bad
3. Spell like abilities are nice. Commune + aid and a daylight.
4. Perfect memory could have significant PFS benefits
5. Aura is very beneficial, static deflection and resistance bonus, opens up the neck slot for something other than a cloak of resistace.

Disadvantages:
1. Terrible AC
2. Hands??? who knows
3. would not be good at UMD even if it had hands.
4. low flight and attack

Silvanshee: Boy was this critter nerf hard.

Advantages:
1. Great fly speed 90, plus pounce makes it a great touch spell delivery agent. (i move cast Frost Bite Rime spell, give to kitty she moves 90 delivers.... yikes)
2. Having a Dim Door adds fun to number 1
3. Heroic Strength +natural attack benifits make base attack best of the 4. Nothing wrong with speak with animal+True speech.
5. Stabilize makes it a good combat medic

Disadvantages:

1. No hands, ouch, that hurts
2. 2 1d6 cure lights a day is such a nerf. kitty used to be a contender with the faerie dragon, no more. Its fall from grace is sort of depressing actually.

So i really wanted to take the kitty until the nerf of doom was pointed out to me. Now i am not so sure. Kitty is best for combat spell delivery even post mega nerf. butterfly can compensate for the characters biggess 'weakness' that being crappy charisma, Cassian aura is just nice.

The other option is... dont take improved familiar ...wait. Take Intensify spell instead. Per most of the guides i could find I was planning on that for 9th level, but i could just wait since there is no clear choice.. Anyway looking for fee back. Thanks in advance.

So the relevant ruling is

The brownie, faerie dragon, imp, lyrakien azata, mephit, quasit, sprite familiars, granted by the Improved Familiar feat, use the Biped (hands) section of the chart. The carbuncle and voidworm protean, familiars granted by the Improved Familiar feat, uses the Serpentine section of the chart. If you do not own a copy of the Animal Archive, your animal companion may only use barding and neck-slot items.

The Cassian appears to be PFS legal (on page 251 UM) but it was not listed in the ruling. I am thinking that it does have hands, since it could always turn into a small human angel, but i can not find a ruling on this. Has anyone else ever seen an answer to this?

Liberty's Edge

so first.... trip arrows rock... loving that

but Page 20 address other ammunition and its says flat out that Alchemical ingredients can not be be imbued to fire arms ammunition. Which, i always thought made sense, you are after all lighting the ammo on FIRE before using it, it would burn off anything you put on it.

SO... the question is, does this new book invalidate the somewhat popular Grenadier Alchemist + gunslinger build. I think... it does. Which will hurt a fair amount of players out there.

I am not trying to be mean or anything, I just think this will come up soon and I wanted to put the question out there to get a ruling as to what to do with such characters. Let them switch the levels to something else (zen archer, alchemist grenadier is NOT BAD!!), i know of at least 3 PFS characters out there that this will break.

Let me start out by saying... I love this feat, even as written i am going to take it with a neutral summoner type i have. Adds variety, Adamantine DR is nothing to sneeze at, some of the some monster options are cheeky its a good (haha) feat.

My question is, was it written as intended. The preeminent neutral summoning class is, the Druid, they can default any spell they have to the summon natures ally equivalent. And yes for pure summoning power the Summoner class is better, without question, but the Druid is the Neutral stand out...the champions of balance so to speak. so...

Was the feat intended to work with both Summon Nature'Ally spell and Summon Monster or JUST Summon Monster.

Not debating the RAW, I just want to know the designers intent with this feat since leaving the Druid out seems a bit off for a book call 'Champions of Balance'.

the the universal monster rules state that, If no caster level is specified, the caster level is equal to the creature’s Hit Dice. Ok that seems to make sense, since there are scads of munchkins out there i was wondering about that word 'specified'.

So lets take the Silvanshee as a test case.

So a bunch of spell like abilities where the caster level is 2, its 2 hit dice so check.

Then you have commune at 12th level, so 'Specified' as 12 level, so check.

What if i wanted to enhance that Silvanshee to 4 HD, either by adding templates or making it a familiar. Do the spells that are set on the page as 2nd level, where second level = its HD , go up to 4th level.

Based on Sean Reynolds ruling on its Paladin like ability going up with its HDs i would hazard a guess and say yes... they would. But that word 'specified' is annoying because, for the sake of convenience, they always specify the caster level on page, even though it does usually equal the HD.

Was this clarified anywhere, i think it makes sense and follow the 'All things based on HD' ruling already made.

Liberty's Edge

Ok i have seen this done in game, but never actually found the ruling on this and no thread seems to specifically address this.

What i have seen done is.

Wizard has air elemental familiar.

Combat starts. Air Elemental has set command to lift Wizard into the air.
he does so
Wizard starts casting spells.

Nor RPG wise this is just a cool thing to see. It was neat.
But how do the mechanics work.

The air elemental is lifting the wizard.. ok, so are we using the lift encumbrance rules?

Or is it a willing grapple, if so does the wizard not gain the grapped condition and now has to worry about concentration checks?

Not surprisingly nothing in core deals with lifting a willing target in combat. so what are the mechanics involved

Ok i did a quick search of the various Amulet of Might Fists threads and nothing jumped out at me as answering this question.

So +3 or higher enhancement bonus overcomes Cold Iron/Silver DR. Check.

A +3 amulet of might fists would also overcome Cold Iron/Silver DR. Check.

If, i had a +2 enhancement bonus on an amulet of might fists, but took a special ability ...say holy

and then drink a Potion of Magic Fang +1 enhancement bonus to attack and damage

Do i suddenly overcome cold iron/silver.

The effects would stack, no doubt of that, but do they stack for overcoming DR?

C. Gain access to all martial weapons.

Liberty's Edge 2/5

of late i have run, and been run through, modules in PFS and i can clearly say that, while i love these, they have severely hampered the characters i have run through these modules and applied the GM credit too. 2 real issue really.

1. 4 prestige is not enough, needs to be upped to 5. I have a 4th level character that cant buy a 3k item, thats pretty bad.

2. Like was done on the PFS scenarios add tier money to the chronicle sheets. So if the module is say 2-4, have a money gained for levels 2 3 and 4. Otherwise , since the money on the sheets is consistently based on the lowest level, a level 4 charter takes a serious set back to his ability to function going forward.

Just some suggestions, i am sure i am not the first to put these forward.
