Woot! Yes! Build coming online now. Combat Patrol, activate!
The only problem now is that my options in combat just got a lot less varied...but a lot more fun!

So, the basic idea from here on out is to stay in the middle of the pack and use a full-round action to activate Combat Patrol, increasing my threatened area by 5 feet (for now), and allowing me to make AoOs within this range and also move as part of them.

So, expect my combat turns to get a little bit more interesting, to be sure.

Iavdi says no more words or threats, instead silently moving his way underneath the flying yielding, aiming his glaive up at it, ready to strike if it attempts to come down.

Just getting ready for AoO's if he decides to move down into my threatened squares.

Oops, did realize I was up again. Misread "everyone" to mean "everyone else". Moving on!

Question for you math people out there. Could Iavdi Enlarge himself and be able to reach the flying one with his glaive? Or would he need to Enlarge Hellstrider? Either works fine, but obviously he trusts himself with his own magic the most.

Okay, cool. Was just wondering how you'd rule it, seeing as how I didn't know which way it's go. Taking my turn now!

Iavdi's skin lights up a bright red in response to the bomb splashing across his armor, and he seems to barely even notice it.

Seeing his skin alight with flame, he takes no action to extinguish the flames, instead respond with a little bit of his own fire.

Moving away from the crossbow tieflimgs to directly under the flying....thing, and casting Burning Hands up at it.

"You will burn."

Damage, fire: 4d4 + 1 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 3) + 1 = 15

Edit: using my 1/day Fire Resist, by the way. In case that wasn't clear.

Question, DM, if Iavdi uses his Hellknight boon to gain Resist Fire 10 as an immediate action, does that protect him from the burning effect? Since he took 7 damage from the bomb and 6 from the burn, are those applied to his Fire Resist separately?

I am constantly surprised how often Iavdi goes first. He only has a +3 Init, after all.

Iavdi, having stunned the archers for now, reaches into his mental focus and pulls out a burst of inhuman adrenaline, greatly increasing his speed.

And with that speed, he will make a movement towards the archers, attempting to get within melee range with his glaive, and striking at the closest one.

Using a point of Focus from Transmutation to use Sudden Speed, increasing his movement speed by 30 feet for a minute. And then try to position himself so that as many enemies as possible are within his glaive's reach as possible.

I'll cast Sound Burst on the group of Tieflings with Crossbows, assuming I can see them from where I am. If I can't, I'll move 20 feet towards them. Assuming I can for my action.

"CANETIS!" Iavdi shouts out, as a wave of sound emanates from his hand, smashing into the group of tieflings shooting crossbows at the Hellknights.

Sound Burst damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7 sonic, and a DC16 Fort save to avoid being stunned for 1 round.

Iavdi stares with his cold eyes, watching the occurrence before him before deciding it isn't safe enough to be worth it.

"I shall be avoiding any such magical pools, for who knows what perverse effects they could have on any of us? I hope you have made the right decision."

I mean, isn't there an entire order of Hellknights that are 'generally LG' or whatnot? Shows you that any alignment is accepted, as long as it begins with lawful.

Hey guys!

I apologize, so, so much for not being here.
I got a job, then school started back up for me, then some family stuff happened, blah blah blah. I've just been super busy and overwhelmed recently, but now that things have settled down (especially the family stuff), I'm ready to get back into the action, if you'll still take me after all this time.

I know I must seem like a broken record at this point, but it's true nonetheless, and I hope that you'll understand that I intend to prove I'm here to stay.

Thanks!

"Fear not, companions, for I have returned from my lengthy absence. I must apologize for this extended break, but we all know the requirements set upon our shoulders by our various Orders." Iavdi says, casually cleaning the fiends' guts off of his glaive.
Read: mysterious side mission given by the Pyre, blah blah, missing, blah blah, he's back now.

With that, he climbs off of Igneous and extends an armored hand towards the nearest member of their little group, apparently in the idea of friendship you mortals so enjoy.

"Unfortunately, I cannot aid you in healing any wounds you may have acquired up until now, although I can promise you an able body for the upcoming fights."

Notably, Iavdi has been updated to level 3, minus gear. Still deciding on what I want beyond what he can pay for the Pyre Bead.

He has become much more support-y, what with his ability to protect adjacent allies by increasing their AC against incoming attacks by 4 (yeah, four!) with his Bodyguard feat while still being able to attack the front line of his enemies.

Unfortunately, until he becomes mythic and take the "may take any number of AoO's" ability, he'll be stuck with only two AoO's to use with it.

Hello, all!
Just coming on, finally, to say that I am really sorry that I haven't been on the boards recently.

The holidays kinda caught me off-guard, and my campaigns were sort of pushed into the background.
With school starting again, I pushed it back even more.

However, with me having a chance to settle myself down at school, I'm more than willing to jump back into this game.
It will, however, require a bit of catch-up reading on my part (that I haven't done yet), and I'm assuming a bit of explanation from the GM as to my whereabouts.

Are any of the people we discovered here still alive? The "scholars", or whatnot?

Iavdi watches the lance pierce the man, eyes blank as he simply admires Hellstrider's form.
"Well done, Hellstrider. Now, let's get on with this. We have work to do."

With this, he scans the room quickly, looking for any sign of writings, whether book or scroll.

Iavdi will simply swing out at the soldier nearest him once again, almost mindlessly accomplishing his task.

Seeing the soldier between himself and D'hara is in fact wounded, Iavdi will attempt to capitalize on that fact, swinging at his chosen enemy once more.

Attack, flanking: 1d20 + 7 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 7 + 2 = 29
Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Aha! Here we go! x3 critical weapons for the win!

Additional Critical Damage: 2d10 + 12 ⇒ (10, 9) + 12 = 31
......for a total of 43 damage. Holy crap, the Pyre is with me on this glorious day!

Somehow sensing that he is close to fulfilling his Order's Edicts, Iavdi's blade strikes true, and the sickening sound of glaive meeting neck causes the Hell-forged warrior to cry out in what can only be described as victorious excitement.

After they surrender, Iavdi lowers his glaive and stares at them, the unflinching face of law.

"Why do we tarry longer than necessary? Surely you recognize the importance of our mission; every minute we waste costs us numbers. Kill them, chain them up and leave them here for our return trip, it matters not."

Somehow, it seems as if frustration and impatience affect even the lifeless, as Iavdi is displaying both currently.

"But know this: none of them are coming with us. I will see to it personally that they are slain where they stand before we drag them along with us to the Library."

Edit: didn't fully process Hellstrider's post.

Iavdi's response to the chakat's offer of aid to the maiden is one of obvious shock.
"Hellstrider, you know we cannot play the role of caretaker to this...civilian...right now. We have no choice but to carry on."

Assuming we leave them restrained and hidden here and they survive until we make it back, will we take them back to the Fort? And what happens to them after that? We simply turn them over to the Rack for, ahem, "rehabilitation"? Iavdi would obviously push for stake them alive to the outer walls and set them alight, but I doubt that the paladin-ish ones would appreciate that all too much.

Iavdi's 5 hit points away from falling unconscious from his nonlethal damage, by the way. He's taken a beating, so some healing would be nice.

Iavdi's forged body has begun to show several red-hot wires through the outside of his skin, and several places are leaking what passes for blood for the android.

Unconcerned about his injuries (as he trusts his allies to aid him), Iavdi focuses on the three men standing in front of him, lashing out with his glaive at the one that's farthest away from him, and directing Igneous to attack the other two.

Iavdi:
Attack, glaive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Iavdi shows no signs of tiring, his helmeted visage remaining silent as he fell upon his programmed instincts: thrust, swing, block, parry, swing again. It was brutally effective in theory, and the android was inadvertently testing out its effectiveness on the battlefield.

His wicked glaive swings out once more, aimed at the heathen Kevroth was flanking with him, while he simultaneously directed Igneous to lash out at the one that dated close to melee with the stallion.

Iavdi roars out in....(pleasure?) as the crusader strikes him.
"Good hit, sir!" he commends sarcastically, before actually taking stock of the situation.

Seeing the maiden being pulled away, Iavdi will quickly move Igneous into position and invokes the power of the blending flame once again on these foolish mortals.
"Just turn yourself in, miscreants! Make this easier on yourselves!"

Moving to the space just west of the other four crusaders so he has the left two in his reach, and moving past the group clotted around him.

For future reference, Iavdi's Burning Hands will just be 'normal flame', and not some magical green color. I just think that having actual flame shoot from your hands is more intimidating than summoning some obviously supernatural magic fire. I'm thinking something like this, with the actual character not being accurate. Iavdi has no need for parlor tricks, just purifying flame.

Iavdi swings his glaive around again, preparing to make another strike at one of the crusaders, but then stops the motion, the point of the blade mere inches from his targets' face.
He knew how these 'paladin' types could be, and wanted to take the effort to assure whatever instinct this one had that made him call for surrender. One does not wave the white flag and then strike your enemy down, after all.

"You heard him, didn't you?"

Intimidate, Aid Another: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

I wasn't talking specifically about us, doing it right now.
I meant the time that other Hellknights back at theFort have to dedicate to doing so, instead of fighting out in the Worldwound.

But you're most likely right, adding these creatures' skulls to the top of the wall after burning them publicly would be quite useful.

In case you couldn't tell, Iavdi is definitely the stereotypical "witch hunt" type. But not the ones that destroyed the Crusade before this one; he actually cares about what they did to deserve death, and this (abandoning the fight to get what they want from this woman) looks like a crime punishable by death to him.

Edit: I actually have to do Iavdi's new gear calculations, but I'll try to leave some for the wand. Why Infernal Heaing, though?

We have no way of determining how long it will take to free them from their crazed state, or if it is even possible.

Also, definitely love how none of the focus is on the woman. From Iavdi's point of view, we are simply preventing a crime from taking place, stopping the spread of chaos, and do not care who the victim was, or how she fares afterward.

Thinking from the perspective of being in character for Iavdi, he'd most likely, given ample time, see these corrupted heretics burn for their crimes. He actually did just receive a new toy that he needs to test out...

But I can see why the Redeemer Paladin wants to attempt to redeem them, and I'm not sure I want to create actual party conflict this early, but Iavdi legitimately doesn't see the effort and time needed to even attempt to turn these fallen souls (which might not even be possible, unless you count the expertise of the Rack as something to be relied upon) as worth it, especially since we have been given an important mission directly from the acting Hellknight commander.

[back in Iavdi's mind] If the majority of the group expresses their desire to intentionally become less effective at combatting this manifestation of chaos in an effort to save these few bodies, then fine. Iavdi will go along with it. But he will still advocate for their execution should they falter in their redemption, and he will not be held responsible for any actions they commit while under the Hellknights'..."care".

I honestly don't think that Iavdi would listen to any such call for nonlethal.

They have obviously been tainted by the ideas of Chaos itself; when faced with an infected arm, sometimes the best solution is to cut it off.

Unless you intend on taking these men prisoner and delaying our mission?

Okay, how will any gold/treasures we find be handled?

If we decide to sell them, does the party get the gold split among them?
Is that then subtracted from your gold per level?
Or do you actually get to keep any profits from selling stuff you decide not to use?

Because if I don't spend any of my third level gold (1,500 gp), I can afford to buy the bead. But there are several items on my "list" already: masterwork Hellknight leather barding (275) for Igneous being the highest such item.
If I take the risk of guessing that I, personally, will receive at least 275 gp worth of loot from the library, then it'll be fine. I just don't know that part works.

As the forgemaster stands silent, so does Iavdi, although this is certainly an easier fest for one who has no human impulses.

When he finally agrees, Iavdi takes the bead from him, nodding silently before exiting the forge.

Huh. He could see my forearm scars, so he knows I've been performing the reckoning. Ehh, I'll do it. I should have enough funds to pay him back within the week.

Also, found the actual rules for the reckonings. It does 1d4 nonlethal damage for the normal, 10 minute version, and 1d4 lethal for the prolonged, more devoted one. Iavdi always chooses the zealous option.

Nonlethal: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Lethal: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Oh, geeze. The first reckoning was rough!

Alright, cool.

Now, my next question: upon reaching 3rd level, will we receive 1,500 gp (half of WBL) or 1,000 gp (half of WBL minus the 500 gp from 2nd level)?

Wait a second. So, does that mean we should have more "money" to buy gear with?
Since we're second level and all?

Just a question: how many of us are planning on taking Hellknight Obedience at 3rd level?
I know Iavdi is for a fact, but is anyone else?

"Thank you, Commander, for giving me this opportunity." Iavdi says, before quickly heading to his meeting with the Pyre's quartermaster.
This, unfortunately, leads to him not responding to Chakat's question, instead rushing off with his charge tailing behind him.

Okay, so I went back and read through the Pyre's section in Path of the Hellknight, and there's no mention of the Record of Wrongful Knowledge. Which means you made it up. Which is awesome. It sounds so much like something the Pyre would do, I didn't even question that it might not be true, and instead went to go find what I missed. The thought of lower level acolytes constantly scribbling away with their quills at the parchment that holds our world together is an inspiring image.

As for the Pyre Bead, I do intend on making it my first true purchase, as soon as I can afford it from whatever loot we may find. For now, however, I will have to loan it and possibly recover any knowledge that the Pyre might be interested in from this library.

"Yes, Sir Taran, that is correct. I require the services of a pyre bead, as I am being sent to a location known as the Librarium of the Broken Black Wing, a place which the commander believes may have felt the taint of the Worldwound. Should this be true, there are undoubtedly cultists and their dangerous knowledge present, and this pyre bead will aid me in destroying what I can before hauling back what the Pyre must see for itself."

"Surely the potentially dangerous knowledge there along with any new material to add to the list is worth the issuing of a bead. I shall make every effort to recompense the Order when I earn the funds through battle against this heresy."

Before Dinner:

Seeing as how we're using the Unchained Crafting rules, Iavdi is going to spend the time before dinner teaching his new apprentice the ways of the forge, beginning the work on Igneous's Hellknight Half-Plate Barding. It'll cost 1,133 gp in raw materials, which will be paid for as we go along, and be a DC 20 Craft check to determine progress. Assuming untrained laborer for my new wizard-to-be, which gives him a +4 on Craft checks, as well as the forges here counting as masterwork tools.

Aid Another, DC 10 Craft: 1d20 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 4 = 7

"Ignorant fool! Your father was a blacksmith, no? Did he teach you nothing?!"

Craft, DC 20: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 9 + 2 = 15
Wow, you have got to be kidding me. Seriously? Okay. Fine.

Finally letting the tongs and hammer drop, Iavdi steps away from the anvil, today's efforts gone to waste.
"Get out of here, get cleaned up, prepare yourself for supper." he says in a not too common frustrated tone.

Yeah, that....that sucked. To say the least.

During Dinner:

When the commander offers food, Iavdi's new recruit, Kobeus, eagerly digs in after a hard day's toil at the fires. And yet Iavdi merely sits there, his eyes simply watching.

"Yes, the Pyre has indeed found the secret to creating....'life.'" he replied, once more holding an arm up to look at the scarred flesh as he curls his hand into a fist. The motion seems to fascinate him, as if he can see the machinery working underneath.
"Although I do not know the progress of more of my kind being produced, unfortunately."
With that, Iavdi is unnervingly quiet through the entire meal, observing his new companions as they ate.

When the scales were brought out, Iavdi (rightfully) doesn't trust them, but takes whichever he is able to and wraps it around his neck.

"I am sure there is plenty of lore that could help us in this....'Blackwing', but what if there is more dangerous knowledge held in that library?" Iavdi says, knowing how find these cultists truly are of hiding their heretical knowledge among other, less conspicuous books.
"I need to check in with the Tower of the Pure, and see if they have any pyre beads that are not being used; one would surely come in handy in our upcoming task."

Basically, just going to go ask whoever showed me to my quarters in the Pyre's tower if they have any pyre beads.

Pyre Beads:
This tiny glass bead transforms itself into a 10-foot-by-10-
foot pile of logs and kindling whenever its command word is
spoken. A sturdy, 8-foot-tall post juts out of the center of the
log heap. This heap does not light upon coming into being, but
anyone who touches the heap and says a second command
word causes it to burst into flame (this also automatically
activates any pyre salt in the flame’s area). The fire burns for
4 hours or until extinguished, at which point it turns back into
a bead. The owner of the item must wait twice as long as the
fire burned before she can order the bead to become a pile of
logs again.

Edit: yes, the pyre beads are, in fact, for burning both the dangerous knowledge that often comes with religion and the followers and cultists of these religions themselves. Witches aren't gonna burn themselves at the stake, ya know!

Also, ooh, ooh! We get to go in a library, we get to go in a library!

Alright, so a few things to talk about here.

1. Noticed my wealth was missing when I tried to buy something, so that was fun. Got it figured back up again.

2. While I was looking how much wealth we started with, I noticed that I had somehow missed that we got Background Skill points. Seeing as how Iavdi doesn't really have a true background, I figured Craft (armor) and Craft (weapons) would be perfect choices. It makes him truly the perfect smith: he's immune to fatigue and exhaustion and doesn't need to sleep. Unending weapons for the Crusade!! Jokes aside, they were obvious choices for his background skill ranks.

3. Would there be a possibility we could use the Unchained Crafting rules? Because otherwise, I'm never going to be able to craft anything with those Background skills I picked up. Heck, he might want to start crafting in the forges of the Pyre before he joins Irabeth for a dinner he won't be taking part in. Iavdi only really feels comfortable (as if he needs to be comfortable) inside the glowing light and heat of a furnace, and would like to spend some time with the materials on hand.

Iavdi cares not for who he picks as his recruit, instead relying on his skill and training to forge this new recruit into one suitable to serve under him. Picking out what looks to be the weakest physically (perhaps aiming at a Signifer) of the group in front of them, he beckons him over as he rides to the Tower of the Pyre.

"Come. You will help me out of my plate, then we will perform the Pyre's reckoning. After that, you will join me for dinner with the Commander."

Once he has stripped his armor off, reluctantly, Iavdi washes off the blood and gore from the previous battle before ordering his recruit to start up the pyre. For they had work to do.

As Iavdi enters the room and joins Irabeth at the table, all present can finally get a look at the true skin of the android, as he is armored only in Pyre leather he requisitioned from the quartermaster, although he still has his glaive nearby.
The intricately styled burns, appearing to have been self-inflicted, form lines of flame and various other appropriate brands, and are a stark contrast to the bright red veins that otherwise cover the android's skin.
Many are still glowing faintly, indicating they are freshly removed. Took one point of fire damage. Don't offer to heal it, anyone.

"Ha, stitchwork?" Iavdi says, laughing emotionlessly as he brandishes an obviously metal arm. "The artificers over at the Pyre did take care of my wounds, yes."

Paid 30 gp for Pyre Hellknight Leather. Also going to inquire about getting any barding for my mount, as I have not the resources to do so, but wish to be better protected in battle.

D'hara would look for someone that can help serve as a mystical guide of sorts. I'm thinking cleric, occultist, or occult arcanist. Someone with knowledge (planes) and the ability to summon monster as well as divination magic. Someone she can turn to for answers.

Personality wise, they'd be submissive to her with masochistic tendencies. It could be male or female.

Ewwwwww, mystical guide? Burn the witch! Burn the heretic!

Seriously, though, seeing as how Iavdi will be taking Leadership as soon as possible, this starting cohort will be wildly important, as he'll probably just take him/her as the cohort for Leadership.

I definitely will be taking the opportunity to create his character now, and might even write up his stats for when he's "a first level cohort", just to give some idea of who he is.

Now, what class should I go for? Decisions, decisions....
