I adore the Investigator, and love it enough that I built two separate investigators for PFS. I don't consider it a problem that I cannot reroll the bad Devise a Stratagem because there are usually opportunities to use attack another creature. Bosses rarely act alone, especially in the six person parties that usually happen in PFS. I do wish though that the investigators got an in-feat option for Electric Arc and other non-attack roll cantrips. Zendel gets his non-attack roll cantrip from being a feychild gnome. This is not an option for my Grippli, Dr. Croaker, and I am seriously considering taking a caster dedication on Dr. Croaker just to get that as an option. Still, I find that Dr. Croaker has lots that he can do still when DaS is less effective. There's almost always people getting hurt in battles against single bosses, and he's great at keeping the party up.

I have a PFS merchant that I love, Zendel of Oprak. Zendel is a gnome who was adopted by the hobgoblin Brazadig of Brazadig's Construct Emporium. His father, who wants to develop trade partners all over Golarian, decided that the most expedient route to do so was to have Zendel join the Pathfinder Society, and make new connections wherever the Society sends him. Mechanically: Zendel is an Interrogator Investigator with a lot of charm. He's got Onyx Trader background, and Obsessive Lore to make both his Mercantile and Hobgoblin Lore scalable. He does have the Dandy archetype, which worked very well for his character. (I could have seen also seen the Linguist archetype working for him, but I went with other choices.) If you want to be a merchant, just be a merchant. Pick a mercantile background, or pick up mercantile/underworld lore with Additional Lore. If you want to max your Earn Income, be Field-Trained and acquire Storied Talent via the Horizon Hunters faction. (However, I actually think you will have more money if you're trained by one of the regular Pathfinder schools and get a free consumable with each mission. Your mileage may vary.) Really, any character can be a merchant. What do you want to do with your merchant? Who are they? What are they selling?

I was able to be adopted by Hobgoblins because PFS has as an 'Adopted Ancestry I' boon that allows characters to be adopted by Leshies, Kobolds and Hobgoblins. This boon curates specific feats that they believe are not dependent on physiology and allows you to pick up those feats if you take the adopted ancestry boon. Up until third level (when the adopted ancestry paperwork was finally finalized by me grabbing that feat, Zendel could point to the fact that I spent 20 ACP for the privilege of him being adopted by hobgoblins, and that he had scaling hobgoblin lore and a background as an Onyx Trader. I wish that PFS would come up with more versions of that Adopted Ancestry boon for other ancestries, but I know it was work to curate which feats required the physiology of your adopted culture, and which didn't. They might not have issued another one since the first was so much work.
