Let's talk Faction Objectives (I'm presently filling out a Season 8 set, for what it's worth): Did there happen to be any "named NPC scholar, knowledgeable spellcaster, or similar figure" in this adventure I could've been able to recruit for the Dark Archive?

If so, forgive a bit of "roll-playing":

Very sorry about the long absence; I guess I just needed a sudden break or something.

Note that I had used my infernal healing wand in the 2 rounds' prep-time you allowed us, so since it looks like I first got hurt on round 2, I should be down only -1, presently...now, 2 things I need to know: How many rounds of actions may I now take, and could I possibly get in melee range by getting up on that little plateau there (or failing that, some other way - I cannot yet fly)?

Acting as if it hadn't just bisected an anthropoid creature about as tall as itself down the middle, Xukong stares in wondrous fascination at the planar scar...then snatches it out of the air with its sword like a fork picking up a noodle.

"I am uncertain how," Xukong declares slowly to the others, "but thisss - and any such others as we may find - might in fact be useful in fixing this plane."

It then takes its effigy back out and torments its bruises back to oblivion (provided we've got 4 rounds).

DO concentration checks automatically fail on a natural '1', or could the slightest investment in Spell Combat have saved that roll? What type of roll are they, anyway: CL check, ability check, their own thing, what?

Delayed action from Round 2:

As Xukong sees the secret of the undead wretch's terrible power, it laughs an unholy, hissing laugh that rapidly rises into an unholy, hissing scream as it charges the entity, sword shifting, lengthening, flattening and growing terrible barbs, and glowing an eerie greenish-black glow from deep within!

I've been using this trick for at least a few adventures now; so far, all DMs have given me the green light.

That is what would be known in some venues as a "strict constructionist" interpretation; I don't see why one shouldn't be able to take it multiple times, especially since traits are kind of just "feats For Kidz"; the Additional Traits feat isn't so much a feat as a marker indicating you chose to "make change", as it were - just so long as all of the traits you take are of different trait "families", which is a restriction on how many traits you can have right there.

Xukong once again pulls out its eerie self-effigy, and spends about 2 minutes torturing itself back to peak condition again.

I think there's a route from there to here that would only require one roll (and hopefully risk from only one enemy) to get through....

The battle spectacularly concluded, Xukong once again takes out its eerie self-effigy and uses it to magically torture the injuries out of itself.

Upon reaching their next task, Xukong is even more taciturn than usual; it is a fighter, a scholar, an artisan, and a mystic, but scarcely a diplomat. It therefore hangs back a short ways and prepares for what should happen if diplomacy fails, mixing the "healing" potion it had generously but erroneously been given earlier with the other potion it had personally selected: A slender flask of what appears to be dark red wine. The resulting concoction is black as Xukong's sword, and it quaffs it through an ingenious hinge mechanism in its beautiful-yet-frightful mask. After that, it takes out a preserved and lacquered Human skull, which it sets to magically floating about the dark kensei in a languid orbit.

So, that's CL 8th, so it'll last up to 8 hours or 40 damage - and HAHA, the example given is precisely the situation in this case!

Xukong is kensei; a master of mind, matter, metal, and magic - its sense of fear is no match for its sense of vindictive bloodlust!

It swings its extraordinary sword, which glows an intense black (a sight you likely would never have comprehended until this moment), glints at the edges with mysterious dark vitriol, and seems to audibly *scream* as it is swung against the cloaker!

Shard +3 Keen, courage vs Red Is Better Dead: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19 OwO What's this? My totem number? Then make it so!
Confirmation roll...: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25 That should do it!

Anyone sufficiently keen, quick, and well-positioned of sight may notice the strange numerological glyphs upon the delicate Tian prayer scroll dangling from near the top of Xukong's mask as they seem to dance in place the eyeblink before...DM, I'll leave up to you to describe what happens next.

Grappling has always been one my weakest points regarding my knowledge of the mechanics; I can never be certain I've got it right, so let me know if I'm missing/messing up anything here, but at least I can see I can do this....

Xukong follows to begin with. Strangely, it seems more preoccupied with its sword than with looking around...

Knowledge (Engineering): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19

...but when the party is confronted with the challenge of shoring up the mountain's fracturing interior architecture, the unnatural mathematical savant proves quite helpful (even though the available materials are not its preferred medium).

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Xukong's unnatural, jumping-spider-like methods of locomotion prove astonishingly adaptive as it moves from surface to surface within the tumbling sphere...

...and although its cold, taciturn demeanor is little help rallying the Ratfolk...

Intelligence check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24

...its otherworldly gift for physics and geometry is nothing short of awe-inspiring!

Xukong takes some time to study the stone...

Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (20) + 13 = 33

...then pulls out one of the most bizarre things any of you've likely seen in quite some time (and you're adventurers!): A poppet, like a child's doll, of cloth, ceramic, bamboo-papyrus, lacquered metal, and unguessable stuffing, that is the spitting image of Xukong, even with a to-scale black sword nestled in its porcelain grip, which Xukong detaches as gently as its trembling hand is able, then repeatedly prods the effigy with; each stab of the poppet provokes a thrashing motion or gasp from the real dark kensei, but once it is done...its ghoul-bite has disappeared.

3 rounds later (which I assume I've got to spare right now), fully healed! :)

Flashback to before entering:

Xukong moves closer to Adumariel in a disturbing, staccato, almost-hopping motion. You notice it doesn't move too close, though, to anyone.

Sense Motive DC 16:
You get a strong sense that it keeps such a distance less for others' sake than for its own. Is it repulsed by you...?

"I have not intersected with you before," It says in a voice like a sharp pencil scrawling across paper before shifting on its heel in a disturbingly smooth motion toward Mun. "But YOU, I have. Interesting times, yesss...?"

"You will - perhaps - recall thessse," Xukong continues as it shows Mun and a pair of wands - one, a red coral wand shaped like a pitchfork (infernal healing), the other a verdigris-coated copper wand tipped with a stylized obsidian sunburst, as well as a single flask filled with translucent black liquid (inflict light wounds in both cases). "If I am gravely damaged," the truly foreign figure announces to the party. "use *these*, or like magics, to fix me. I have...special sensitivities. However, so long as there is time enough when all steel is silent, I have acquired even better, albeit more tedious, means since we last met."

Before entering the Tapestry, Xukong draws a wand shaped like an isosceles pyramid of black marble, its edges lined with diamond, and touches it to both shoulders. Its form is momentarily overlaid by a the stylized black silhouette of a suit of armor (mage armor wand).

/flashback

Xukong recognizes these foes. It has fought such before, and remembers their hidden strength. Its takes a moment to draw another wand - a slender crystal number with a stylized Tien floral motif - and waves it over itself (wand of shield) before advancing with its unsettlingly bizarre hopping gait, bearing in hand a massive black sword shot through with glowing green runes (or are they cracks? Very hard to tell).

Xukong - an ominous, disturbing, masked creature bearing a sword that looks like something straight out of legend - barely speaks a word as...it...finds its way to the party, only bothering to flash its Open Road token and offer a bow so unnaturally stiff you are somewhat concerned for its health.

Use Magic Device: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Xukong inspects the Tapestry closely, looking almost comical as it bends, gloved spidery hands behind its back, at what might just be a perfect 90°-angle. Much insight does it have to share.

Intimidate: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Xukong seems disinterested and remote at the interrogation, but just the sight of it is enough to help creep some of the captives out.

Knowledge (Planes): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Despite only a limited familiarity with the Hao Jin Tapestry, the mysterious masked warrior turns out to be no stranger to extraplanar travel, and in a voice like a trickle of wind slowly diffusing into a vast void, shares a number of comparative insights based on both seasoning and scholarship.

Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16

Despite not being able to see the back of Xukong's neck beneath its long hair and exquisite cloth-and-metal mask, one does get the sense that there wouldn't be hair growing on it anymore than there would be grain growing in a salted field - but it doesn't take much to notice the creature's acute sensitivity-bordering-on-paranoia. In fact, the sensation causes it to thrash about in violent spasms, much too bothered by the experience to really consider it well - nonetheless, it can offer some educated guesses as to what's going on.

Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19

Xukong looks over the repair team's magical implements - its subsequent recommendations are solid, but the repair team has a hard time understanding the way its idiosyncratic, heavily-mathematical manner of speaking.

Knowledge (History): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Although a rather asocial individual even among fellow adventurers, Xukong is no slouch when it comes to academic and esoteric matters. Plenty of information is gained.
