So I'm trying to construct a Kobold Dragonblood Shifter and I'd settled on a one level dip into a Lore Oracle for Sidestep Secret, but now I'm looking at Defensive Instinct on the Shifter and wondering if they'd stack.

The Sidestep Secret revelation says that you use your Charisma mod in place of your Dexterity mod for AC and Reflex saves.

Defensive Instinct says you add your Wisdom mod, though my DM is letting me take a feat from the Legendary Shifters 3rd party book that shifts all Shifter features that depend on Wisdom to being based on Charisma. That said, it just says you add your modifier for that stat (if any) to your AC and CMD.

Would these two abilities stack? Would I get my Charisma as my Dex replacement and then get my Charisma again?

Grand Lodge

Okay, I feel like maybe the bit I was confused about got lost a bit. The only thing I need to clarify about the spell is what bonuses are correct?

Is it Armor Class, saves, and checks? Or is it attacks, saves, and checks?

So, saves and checks obviously receive the bonus. Then is it Armor Class or attacks that get boosted in addition? Or both?

Nothing else about the spell is in question or needs to be talked about here. I'm just asking the one question which needs answering.

Also, I think I posted this in the wrong section. I should have posted this in the Rules Questions forum, so that's my bad.

Grand Lodge

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

So I only found one other thread about this spell on the forum and it didn't answer this particular question.

In the text for Spellcasting Contract, Lesser it states that you receive a bonus equal to the highest level imbued spell to your Armor Class, saves, and checks.

In the example text subsequent to that, it states that the example character receives this bonus to their attacks, saves, and checks.

Which is correct? Or do you receive the bonuses to Armor Class, attacks, saves, and checks. I'm playing a Cleric of Asmodeus and am intending to use this spell, so I need this answered.

Thanks in advance.

So I'm about to take the Summon Guardian Spirit in a game and I'm taking an Imp who will be gaining enough HD to reach more than double his original HD.

The Bestiary says that as a general rule any creature whose HD increases by 50% gains an increase in size. Would my Imp increase in size as he gains more and more HD from being summoned by a more and more powerful Summon Monster spell? Theoretically if this rule is followed he could end up being larger than my character, and I for one would really like this.

Grand Lodge

I no longer believe that the rules as written support my position. A cleric channeling to harm cannot heal themselves, regardless of whether they are living and channeling positive or undead and channeling negative.

I think that in my own games I will overrule this, however.

Thank for your help, everyone. I consider my question answered.

Grand Lodge

Alright, then. Could you list some of the ways I can do that, then? Mostly out of curiosity, as I'm aware that using my Touch of Corruption to heal myself as a swift action will generally be more efficient. Also so I'm aware if I decide to play a negative energy cleric in future.

Grand Lodge

Would that not be overridden by the line in Channel Energy that specifies that a cleric can choose whether or not to include themselves in its effects?

Core Rulebook wrote:
A cleric can choose whether or not to include herself in this effect.

Given that the cleric always has this option when channeling, does this not mean that they can always choose to subject themselves to their channeled energy, the effect of which is determined by the combo of living/undead + positive/negative energy?

Grand Lodge

Let's leave aside all questions of optimization and whether channeling energy is the best course of action for this thread, can we? I'm only concerned with legality.

See, my problem here is with the line that reads "The cleric can always choose to include himself with this effect."

To me that reads the same as, "The cleric can choose to be affected by their channeled energy however their type is affected by it."

Basically, that they can always choose to be affected by their own channeled energy regardless of whether they channel to harm or heal, with effects varying based on whether they are living or undead.

So a living person who is channeling positive energy can always choose to heal themselves when using their ability, and an living creature channeling negative can always choose to harm themselves when using their ability. Conversely, an undead cleric channeling negative can always choose to heal themselves, and an undead cleric channeling positive can always choose to harm themselves.

This is how I've always viewed it, and I've never believed it to be unbalanced simply because they can only do it 3+Cha mod times per day. Or for an Antipaladin, (1/2 Antipaladin level + Cha mod)/2 times per day.

Now, as I said, if it was another person channeling, I would agree that I am only affected by positive energy channeled to harm and negative energy channeled to heal. I'm not disputing that. I'm only asking whether people think that the line saying "A cleric can always choose to include himself in this effect" overrides it when they themselves are the ones channeling.

Grand Lodge

Alright, so I've searched a fair bit on this and so far I can't find anything that answers this question.

I'm playing in an evil game, and I'm playing a character with the Negative Energy Affinity trait. My class is Antipaladin, and soon I am going to receive Channel Energy.

I mentioned that a great thing about Channel Negative Energy for me is that I can always heal myself, even while harming others. My DM argued that by the wording of Channel Energy, that's not the case.

He says that I am only healed by Negative Energy that is channeled to heal undead, and not to harm the living. Now, if it was another cleric/antipaladin channeling to affect me I would say he is right, but it says under Channel Energy "A cleric may always choose to include himself in this effect."

To me, that means that I can always be included in my own Channel Energy, and will be affected by my Negative Energy depending on whether I am alive or undead. In this case, I will be healed because I am considered to be undead.

Am I right that I can heal myself Negative Energy that is channeled to harm the living, or is he right that I can only be healed by Negative Energy channeled to heal undead?

I would be immensely grateful to any dev wandering by that could provide an answer, because both myself and my DM are 100% sure of our positions.

Grand Lodge

Sorry to once again drag this poor old thread into the light, but I really need an official call on this issue because I want to play this in my weekly game but my DM doesn't believe it's valid.

Pretty much the only way to convince him it is valid is a call from one of the devs. Any chance we can get a ruling on this?

Grand Lodge

Indeed. In fact, Dell finds them quite fascinating. Born of horrid monsters and civilized people, it's quite the dichotomy.

Grand Lodge

Cool, just wanted to make sure Dell had enough money for his wagon and horses.

Grand Lodge

My gunslinger will likely be ranged support for whatever melee person there is. He will have some long-range capabilities through the use of a crossbow so he'll be able to switch between long range and close range. He also has the Heal skill so he'll be able to offer first aid if necessary.

Oh, and he has a large wagon, so the party won't have to travel on foot.

Grand Lodge

Here is the same app from the last thread. I will create an alias for this character if I get accepted.

Basics:
Name: Razida Duivel(RAH-zee-da doo-VELL) aka Raz(Rahz)
Race: Human
Class: Gunslinger
Ability Scores: Str 10 Dex 17 Con 12 Int 14 Wis 14 Cha 10
Skills: Acrobatics, Bluff, Craft(Alchemy), Heal, Perception, Sense Motive, Survival
Feats: Extra Grit, Point Blank Shot

Background:
Raz was born in Taldor to a virtually unknown but wealthy family. His father was a baronet based in Cassomir. Raz led a rather unassuming life until he came across his first gun in a market stall. Fascinated by the exotic weapon he immediately bought it and a supply of powder and took it home. His parents were less than pleased but he managed to calm them down and let him keep it.

He practiced with the awkward weapon, hiring an alchemist to study the powder than allowed it to function and teach him how to create it himself. He studied the gun inside and out, taking it apart several times to study it. His parents found it quite funny when he first took it apart and it took him a week to put it back together properly again.

After several years he had actually become skilled with it, though he never had occasion to use it until he was shopping one day and saw a shop owner, sporting many bruises and a broken nose, shouting that someone had beaten and robbed him. Raz saw the man running and gave chase. When he caught up with the thief he tried his sword though was no match for the veteran swordsman. In a moment of desperation he drew his gun and, with a resounding boom, brought justice to injustice.

From that day on Raz was restless, walking through the town often and unable to turn a blind eye to the myriad injustices that plagued his country. Finally, it became too much and he decided to leave. He could do no lasting good in this gods forsaken country, but perhaps elsewhere he could give some peace in a place where not everyone hid a dagger behind them and took an exposed back as an invitation to stick it in to the hilt.

He has traveled far and seen much, and although he has developed a sense of pragmatism to temper his idealistic tendencies, he still firmly believes that there is no excuse for hurting others and has never hesitated to use his gun when words are useless.

Appearance:
Raz stands at a little over six feet, with dark brown skin marked with ritual scarring. A line of small burn marks in the shape of vertical lines follows each of his high cheekbones and the dead center of his chin. His eyes are a dark amber color and his teeth are perfectly clean and white. However, his hair draws the attention away from his teeth given that it is also white and runs down to just below his shoulders. He keeps it in a ponytail held in place with a ring of silver bearing the crest of a white panther over an inverted crown. He is lean and wiry, but with obvious strength and purpose in his movements, and a subtle grace which goes unnoticed by most.

As for attire, he wears a pair of dark brown leather pants supported by a black leather belt with the same crest as his hair ring on the buckle. His boots are the same color of leather as his belt with scuff marks and dirt covering them. He wears a royal blue shirt beneath a studded leather chest piece which is in turn covered with a dark brown coat. A battered but obviously well crafted pistol hangs from his left hip beside an old short sword. Finishing the outfit is a pair of fingerless leather gloves and a wide-brimmed hat which is usually pulled down to shield his eyes from the sun.

IC Questions:
1. Who are you and where are you from?

My name is Raz. I come from Taldor, and I am not fond of talking about my time there. *pause* Would you mind changing the subject?

2. How were you acquainted with Professor Lorrimor?

That old fool? Ha! We traveled together for a brief time, more out of coincidence than friendship. At least at first. He paid me a decent amount to keep pace with him and protect him and a precious artifact he'd found if anything happened. We ended up together for... About six months? Good times, good times. Anyway, we parted ways eventually but some time later the old man tracked me down and asked for my services again. I thought, "what the hell? He pays well and the job's no different to what I usually do, so why not?"

I worked for him on and off for the last five years, either escorting him or one of his other paid cronies when he sends them out to fetch something. It's been good. Damn shame he's dead. Still, maybe he'll have one more payout for me, eh?

3. How would you describe your personality?

I'm a man with simple tastes and a simple mission. Suffer Not Injustice. A simple credo but it's one that helps me sleep at night. Sure, a man's gotta eat and I charge for my services, but honor and justice don't puts shoes on my horses or food in my stomach, do they? Now, some may not like that, but truthfully I could care less. I do what I do, I make what money I can. And let's face it, how many people can say they honestly enjoy their job?

4. Do you buy into the superstitious paradigms of the denizens of Ustalav?

*snorts* Oh, hell no. I mean, I haven't spent much time there, but I've heard stories about the place. I mean, I love helping people but that place, by every account I've heard, is beyond help. I once got told that the people there 'make cynics look playful and cute.'

Yeah, not my ideal vacation destination.

Grand Lodge

If you need a replacement, I would most definitely be willing to join up with my gunslinger. I'll likely be following the game anyway.

Have fun guys!

Grand Lodge

I am very interested. Are there any spots still open?

The character I would like to put forward is a Human Gunslinger with a Suffer Not Injustice complex. The whole suffer not injustice thing does mean he'll be a bit of a loose cannon and respond in a very old testament, bullet to the head way if he sees someone being abused, tortured, attacked with provocation etc. Would love to see how a paladin responds to something like that lol. His scores are as follows...

Str 10
Dex 18 (Including Human +2)
Con 11
Int 15
Wis 15
Cha 10

I went with standard gunslinger with alignment LG, pistol starter with a short sword for backup. Trained in Acrobatics, Bluff, Craft(Alchemy), Heal, Perception, Sense Motive, Sleight of Hand and Survival. (Extra skill from favored class.)

There's the bare bones of it.

EDIT: Feats, forgot the feats. Went with Point Blank Shot and Extra Grit.

Grand Lodge

Sorry to take up your time, but I've decided to withdraw my application. I hope your game goes well.

Grand Lodge

I'm interested. I sadly have an appointment to get to, but I'll be going with a human gunslinger.

I do, however, have his scores. Rolled using Online Die Roller, let me know if that's no good. 4d6 to a stat as follows, and a +2 bonus to Wis as a human and +1 to both Wis and Dex for the Lv4 bonus..

STR 10 DEX 18 CON 14 INT 14 WIS 18 CHA 10.

Will post a more in-depth bio later.

Grand Lodge

I am sending in my character sheet now, is there still an opening?

It is rumored that there are many in Ustalav who practice necromancy, ranging from minor experiments to occult ceremonies. How do you feel about such practices? Could you ever work along side such individuals?

Well... Not rightly sure. I haven't met many necromancers meself, but so long as they aren't killing innocent people for their 'experiments' or anything like that, I suppose I can tolerate their presence.

Grand Lodge

Good luck people. *crosses fingers*

Honestly, for me the best thing ever for gaming sessions in tortillas. I make up a mix of beef mince, red onion, red capsicum, LOTS of garlic with a matriciana pasta sauce, serve it with cheese, lettuce and tomato. Schweppes Agrum to drink with it, ain't nothing better.

Except pizza. Love pizza.

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher.

It starts with Storm Front, and it's an absolutely awesome series.

I'm in Perth, been here for some time. I'm actually looking for a Pathfinder game right now, but it needs to be close to public transport. Anyone need an extra player?

Chilling in perth. Any idea who a guy's gotta kill to find a decent game in this town?
