Fort-Save, round 3 (1d20+3=6)
Ugh...

Merrik inhales deeply, while crushing the goblin, grinning widely, getting some spores in as well... and coughes hard.

Still, he brings his flail back up, swings it sideways against the next attacker, smashing the head of the weapon on the side of it's head:
mwk large heavy flail attack and damage, round 3 (1d20+3=23, 2d8+3=16)
Confirmation roll and additional damage, round 3 (1d20+3=7, 2d8+3=15)
too bad. would have been 31 damage! should have taken Cleave...

Male Human Cleric 2

The fallen Goblins took 1d4 non-lethal damage from the stomp?
HP: 9 (previous) -3 (club) -1 (short sword) +1 (fast healing) =6

Fort-save, +1 for cloth over mouth/nose. (1d20+4=14)

Well... at least some fell down. Too bad they are up fast again... time to get to business then.

Getting hit by the Goblins, Merrik brings up his heavy flail, tries to crush a goblin or two underneath it, attacking the club wielder that hit him: mwk large heavy flail attack and damage, round 2. (1d20+3=15, 2d8+3=10)

Ok; as you posted you are in the center of the group; you need to decide which to stop; forward would get Gloisel; the Paladin and all of 8 of those goblins.

10ft step to the intersection and you could stomp toward either Sunsets Gobbies; who she has intimidated or Mogue's who have some dead.

What will you do?

Taking the 10ft towards Sunset then, thanks.

Valegrim wrote:
Please give me the range in feet so I know how many saves to make for the gobbies; and tell any party members if they need to make saves.

Range is 20ft. cone. I don't know if the others might need to save, that depends on where the most gobbies are. Merrik would stomp in that direction.

Male Human Cleric 2

Anyway:
"Hold your breath! It's gonna get ugly now." Merrik shouts a warning to his companions, then lifts one foot and powerfully sets it down on the ground again, sending a shockwave towards the onstorming goblins, hoping to topple some, and catch the others in the cloud of spores that probably erupt.
Using the Stomp Psi-like ability, Reflex save DC 11.

Male Human Cleric 2

Do the goblins wear masks?

Male Human Cleric 2

Initiative (1d20+1=9)

Merrik stands somewhere in the middle of the group, not really knowing how some of his companions will react to whatever happens next.
Well... don't think about the others here for a second. You don't even know what you will do next! Now get up your weapon and just look as if you are tough. Yeah, do that for the elf-girl.

His inner voice sure is a voice of confidence...

Male Human Cleric 2

Merrik keeps a bit back, then follows the others, after some have made it across successfully.
1d20+3=21

Male Human Cleric 2

Noticing Sunset getting close to the Cleric, the huge man gets a bit smaller, if anyone would care.
Oh boy. Heartbroken already? You've met that girl like only some hours ago! And she only hugged you up until now! Boyboyboy... So what she's getting a hug from him. .. Okay, a longer hug. Yeah, right. Jealous? Fits. Pull yourself together! And don't you stare so obvious at her! and just as if Sunset heard his thoughts she looks over to the goliath, who quickly turns around, getting his backpack down to search through it for some cloth to produce a makeshift mask.
Ha! Caught!

I took the same liberty there. Hope that's okay for the both of you.

After crossing the first spikey feet of the backdoor entrance, Merrik stands still before moving on. He's not the stealthiest, so he does his best not to make any noise while standing still.

Male Human Cleric 2

"Sure. You just have to be careful how to move." the Goliath says, then sets down the door and goes about to enter the passageway.
Slow enough to take no damage, but as fast as possible at that.

Damn you and your big mouth. But you have to impress the lady, don't you?
...
I think you're going to throw up now... How will that impress her?

Male Human Cleric 2

"Okay then." Merrik speaks, goes near the door in position, looks around the group once more, to see if all are prepared, then hauls it open.

Male Human Cleric 2

How large are those rats? ... Not too large, I hope.

Merrik stands back, lets Bob or someone check the 'door', and waits for Mogue to get in first.

Male Human Cleric 2

Second is okay for me.
"Someone got a torch? I can see good enough in poor light, but in pitch black darkness I'm as blind as most others." the Goliath asks before entering the cave behind Galen.

Cave number 1 please.

"Sounds like a plan: Survive. Let's do it."

Male Human Cleric 2

"Hmm... you think this is the back-entrance, the Kirin talked about? Seems more upfront to me." the goliath speaks concerned.

"None taken. I may be broad, but I'm flexible as well. If it's not to narrow for you, I will fit through as well. Might take a bit longer, but not too much."

Male Human Cleric 2

Distance: A bit more than hearing distance, if possible, on the open land. But definately within seeing distance in the caves, if we enter.

Merrik nearly has to puke on the smell he encounters, so he breathes flat through his mouth, following the ranger, looking over his shoulders from time to time.

Coming to the caves, he slowly and carefully moves up to the ranger.
"And special cave entrance?" he asks shortly.

Male Human Cleric 2

Merrik's just waiting for the ranger to give directions. He will take one of the first places in the order, if nobody objects.

Male Human Cleric 2

"I'd prefer to follow the tracks. Better to get at someone from behind, then to run into them face-up." Merrik states, but is open for every decision.

Male Human Cleric 2

After having his equipment checked, Merrik looks around a bit more, then asks: "Anyone know where that backdoor is, the Kirin spoke about?"

Male Human Cleric 2

The Goliath seems a little sick from the transport the Kirin made with the group.

Looking around a bit he is a bit puzzled, stammering: "Where... Where are we? ... This looks ... so ... close to home, ... yet not..."
Then the Kirin gives his explaination and disappeares. Merrik looks around a bit more, readjusting his pack, checking for his weapon, staying silent until:

Merrik has to laugh so hard at those words.

"I think it wants us to squash some goblins..." Merrik whispers back to Mogue, then chuckles.

She comes to Merrick and drapes herself over the big, hunched man's form. Resting her head upon his own with her cheek lying upon his mat of black hair. She says something quietly to the large fellow giving him a friendly clinch before again scampering away and finishing with putting away her bedding and 'dressing' up for the adventure to come.

All the while Astledier has been watching his niece's antics, his face slowly becoming more serious even as her actions continue to be chaotic and seeming random.

Merrik just took a sip as Sunset hung herself over his shoulders, so he nearly spat it out again. He was just about to turn and shake off the hugger, when he notices the slender arms of the elf, speaking quietly to him.

He can't hide a small smile and speaks a whispered morning-greeting, hugging her arm in respond.

After Sunset goes to continue getting dressed, he suddenly doesn't feel that drowsy anymore. He finishes his coffee, stands up and packs his things with an energy he didn't have a minute before.
Strange, isn't it? A small hug from that cute elf-girl and you're awake.
Nah, it wasn't the coffee, no matter how hard you want to tell it yourself.
Heh... Sunset is making your sun rise, eh?

Having packed up, he walks back over to Petrovich, thanks him with a nod for the coffee and then goes up the hill Hava mentioned, trying to not turn to look at Sunset, but failing ever so often.

Male Human Cleric 2

Merrik is a longsleeper. Only slow he awakes from the babble of the others.
Yawning wide he sniffs at the air, smelling the fresh coffee.
Streching he moves over to Peter, holding out a jug to get some of that black morning goodness.

He's not much of a morning person. He moves slow, a bit clumsy in times, his eyes half closed back to his pack, sitting down on the forest floor, sipping his hot brew, looking around the camp.

"Ah home." There's a lot of different emotions in her voice as she speaks the word quietly. "Fer me t'has always been a different ship, with crew comin' an' goin' when family meets up in different ports." She sighs as behind her eyes different memories flit.

"There's siblings an' relatives I in't seen in a few score o' years, but I know, come next time I'm in'na same place as 'em we'll be hookin' up an' share tales." Her gaze grows even farther afield as her voice drifts on.

"I've never been too far away from home. I was out fishing and hunting with my dad some times, we've been away for days, up to two weeks, but that's as far as it was.

We never have been out of the mountains. And I knew all the people that were with us." the goliath recons the past, sighing faintly.

"As t' th' placin' of yerself?" She whispers as a bare arm from within her blanket lifts to point towards the heavens,

"Y'see that one bright point o' light there?" And Merrik leans closer to look where about in the sky Sunset is pointing, "That be th' North Star. Sailors c'n use it like th' rose on'na compass pinned t' th' sky t' set their course from." Her arm drops and in so doing her body shifts that much closer towards Merrik.

"Dad told me something along that lines. He called it Lodestar though."

Sunset wrote:

"Unfortunately it only kind o' helps t' give ye a direction t' point at. I in't actually studied chart readin' an' such yet." She blushes and lowers her gaze as she admits to her lack of skill, even as Merrik's own stare drops along with Sunset's arm and now, at this close distance he realizes how big and blue those eyes truly are.

She's a beauty, you know? crosses Merriks mind, loud enough to make him think he just said that out loud, bringing him to blush just as well. Thankfully his darker skin tone and the absence of light hides this mostly.

Sunset wrote:

"A-hem!"

There's a polite, but loud, cough from where the Master Bard sits enfolded in his blankets on the other side of the fire watching the pair and Sunset wrinkles her nose at him for spoiling the 'moment'.

"Well, t'is gettin' late,"

"Yeah. Right. Late." Merrik stammers, sitting up from his lean to the elven girl. He hurriedly turns back to his belongings, putting his own blanket over him, closing his eyes, breathing a bit too fast, should anyone want to check it.

Oh, you like her... A bit small for my taste, but a cutie.

At least he didn't feel so homesick after that encounter.

"S'up mate? Th' sky not close enough for ye?" She asks softly as her fingers begin to dance across the strings almost absently as she begins to sing.

Merrik looks up as Sunset comes close, then looks up further into the trees. He sighs, then speaks: "I can't even see too much of it, but I thought to have accepted that. I don't know... It's more like .. .. I miss my friends, my family." My mom.

His gaze comes down, turning to the ground, the fires, the people around, the trees surrounding them all.
"I never thought I'd get so far away from home. Hell, if I even knew where I am right now..."

Male Human Cleric 2

Spot-check (1d20+2=5)

Merrik is rather uncarrying, for the rest of the evening. It was a long day, some things happened around him. He doesn't really know in which direction his home lies, and how many miles he is away from it. But he misses his people. Now even more than in the times he was alone in the mountains.

Male Human Cleric 2

Merrik keeps rather silent after hearing the prophecy, shaking his head some, smiling to himself.

Male Human Cleric 2

"Dwarven Mines you say? He, I hope I don't have to crawl on my knees in there... But go ahead, I'd like to hear that prophecy." Merrik speaks between two bites.

He doesn't really care for the prophecy though. He simply doesn't believe in such stuff, though sometimes they are amazingly near the truth...
The Goliath thinks that each man is his own fate. There's no great plan, written in the stars, or in the coffee-ground, that determines how the world will move or end.
He strongly believes, that everyone is the maker of his own path, may it lead to glory or destruction, for him alone or some few or many in the world.

If everything everyone will do is already destined, what greater purpose would a live be than a cogwheel in a gnome device?

Male Human Cleric 2

Having finished his work on the beanpot-retrieving, the Goliath sits on the ground near the fire, holding his two rabbits out over it to get them cooked.

Male Human Cleric 2

I uploaded the Map Val sent out. It can be found here: Click.

Some digging later the pot full of beans is out of the earth and Merrik brings it to Petrovich, seeing the newcomer Galen.
"Why hello. I think we haven't met? I'm Merrik." the huge man states, holding out his hand to the paladin.

Okay, found them (and can't edit the post above anymore).

Looking at the rules for buying back the LA, it seems I have to decide at leveling up to 3rd class level, so it seems there is still some time to get there. May I postpone my decision until we are close to that mark?

I know I read them buy back rules somewhere on d20srd.com, but can't seem to find them right now.

Will tell you the decision once I read those rules again.

Merrik is not too surprised anymore and takes the shovel from Petrovich. He sets down his pack, takes the flail from his belt and begins digging as he is told to, using one hand only as the shovel is a bit too small for him.

"Boat? I've been on boats on a lake up at the mountains. Still there was rock around, and mountains to enclose the lake. An ocean can't be that different. Some waves, a bit of wind..." Merrik answers foolishly, then packs his belongings again, as the others set off, while thinking: She probably thinks I don't like water, like the dwarfes... She probably hasn't seen much of my race.

He keeps in the rear of the group, not the last of em, but one of the last, looking the other up and down to get to know their behaviour better.

Regarding the question of the Illusion or not having one, he speaks: "I'd take the illusion. First of all, you don't want to hear me sing, and second: Who knows what such a song might attract."

Unless we arrage ourselves otherwise, I'm going to use 3rd person with direct speech. Italics and smaller will mean thoughts, while "blabla" will indicate spoken words.

Male Human Cleric 2

Merrik keeps a bit quiet for the time being, having not seen to many of the other races up until this point in time (appart from the many gnomes in their village).

The ride to the burned village is not much to his liking. He hasn't rode before and is grateful that these steeds don't get him into trouble.

Getting into the burned out village he is happy to get ground beneath his feet again, even if the place seems not the best to make a rest. That and the absence of mountains, slopes and stone in general don't go lightly on his mind.

Merrik looks, from a distance, just like any human man could look like: brown hair, a bit in disarray from the hard ride. His face is mostly shaven, though not too clean.
Only getting close to him, or having something normal sized standing next to him, his height becomes noticable.
He's wearing a studded leather armor, having a heavy flail tagged to his belt. Besides a mostly filled backpack and a bedroll, there is not much else to the Goliath.

After getting the introductions done, he takes the offered hand of the elven woman, shaking it lightly, reacting surprised to the strength that lies behind that grip.

I have an idea for background, but would like to get a bit more info on Half-giants in your world (and I don't possess the EPH and d20srd.org is apart from the stats not really helpful there).

I hope I did the background skills right...

I didn't really come up with a hook for Merrik, so I'm going to take one of those that you provided. Let me know which one works best with the story you have in mind.
