Male Tiefling (Daemon-Spawn) Arcanist 1
![]() Alrighty, here we go. You can, of course, find my initial pitch for the character over here, and plenty more details can be found in the profile, but I'll strive to get the gist across here. Lyj is essentially a power-mad spellcaster with dreams of unlocking the full potential of magic, thus achieving ultimate power - but he is also thoroughly convinced that the best way to achieve that goal is not by building a tower in the wilderness and creating increasingly dangerous minions, but by playing along with the rest of society. He believes that proving oneself useful, even helpful to others is the best way to build a proper support network and thus increase your own ability to pursue your goals; if he wasn't a near-emotionless inconsiderate egotistical jerk, he would probably go way out of his way to charm everyone he met as best he could. His schizoid tendencies have a fun effect for me as a writer; namely, he behaves more Lawfully than almost any other character I've ever had, causing far less trouble than plenty of Chaotic Good characters I've run, while using some entertainingly creepy doublespeak, deadpan sarcasm, and malicious undertones to his inner monologue. One of my favorite lines I've written describing his personality/alignment is, "He's not Good - he's just done the math." To that end, he's become something of a part-time investigator for hire over in Absalom (despite his Issian origins, Absalom has the greatest library in the world), ingratiating himself with law enforcement on the premise that directly assisting the law was the easiest way to prove that he was on their side. There are a couple brief stories at the bottom of the profile that help outline his previous investigations. Once he heard about the Stolen Lands and the opportunities abounding, he began to keep tabs on what was happening out here with an eye to carve out his own little piece. He waited to head out himself until a group gained a foothold, reasoning that it would be more efficient to join a partially successful group (that'd be y'all) by showcasing his talents to them rather than starting his own. It's a risk, still, but an acceptable one for the potential gains. He also may have caught wind that one of the mysteries he was investigating in Absalom (see That Which Should Remain Hidden in the profile) might pan out here in the Stolen Lands, and he would relish the opportunity to hunt down the lead. Mechanically, he's an Arcanist, with an emphasis on Enchantment and Divination magic (to assist in his activities with the law, mostly), but he's pretty obsessive about learning as many spells as he can. When running the character previously, I've had a tendency to burn through gold pretty quickly scribing new spells (until I can afford a Blessed Book, anyway). He also will be putting a fairly heavy emphasis on the Counterspell and Spell Disruption abilities in the Arcanist Exploits; he would never admit it, but he absolutely hates to be outperformed by other spellcasters and so endeavors to undercut the work of rivals whenever possible. He would gestalt into Alchemist (Mindchemist archetype) as a fairly natural extension of his studies into the nature of arcane magic, a need for more options for defense in the form of bombs (so as to use his magic for more important things like research) and a desire to become even smarter than his already genius-level intellect through the strange art of the Cognatogen. Whether or not he's mastered those secrets yet is of course up to our friendly neighborhood GM. A mildly tangential musing on the nature of an Evil alignment:
When I first played this character (in a RL game of Carrion Crown), one of my friends disputed my claim that he was Lawful Evil, saying that if he didn't act on his evil impulses, that essentially made him Lawful Neutral. I disagreed, though; I think that intent matters, when it comes to alignment. If Lyj was Lawful due to a belief that the law was more important than his own desires, that would make Neutral. If he was Lawful thanks to a conscience or need to improve the lives of others, that would make him Good. Instead, he follows the law because he believes that ultimately, that best serves his own ends.
For me, the ultimate definition of Evil is pursuing your own desires regardless of the impact on the wellbeing of others, and Lyj is, at his core, extremely selfish. He just believes in playing the long game, and people who are indebted to you are more likely to be helpful at the crucial moment. As the kingdom building gets underway (which I love doing, by the way), I think Lyj would latch on to the position of Magister pretty hard. He'd have almost no desire to get involved in the minutiae of running the kingdom entire, but he would be good at it, and being responsible for a burgeoning country's magicians would suit him down to his bones. He would gleefully fling himself into furthering the education of the entire country (especially its wizards, of course), in the hope that more minds able to actually apply themselves would both irritate him less on a day-to-day basis and possibly even prove themselves useful to his ongoing research into the Unified Thaumaturgic Theorem. One thing I'm still working on - I'm starting to scan through your game with an eye for any NPCs or PCs that Lyj could know of or interacted with in the past, but there's an awful lot of material there, so bear with me while I comb through. That should do it for a brief rundown, I think - any questions? ![]()
![]() Alright then. Viscount K here with my submission. It's a little rushed, so it's not quite as complete as it ought to be - in particular, some of the crunch is either missing or a little confused as I've used the alias before, and in my hurry some numbers probably got missed. If there are any place names or whatnot that don't seem to make sense, same reason. Oh, and I definitely have not had time to figure out his whole spell list yet, so that whole section in the profile is something of a lie. Sorry about that, I'll be updating it shortly if I get chosen, but it's kinda a lengthy process that I just plain don't have time for before the deadline. That said, now presenting: Lyj, The Demon of the Library
Lyj is one such. Tiefling by birth, he never truly understood the 'compassion' others tried to teach him. In fact, most human emotions would always baffle him somewhat - which, given his intellectual brilliance, was not a common occurrence in the rest of life. Some with his particular combination of intelligence and dispassion might have quickly become a menace to society. Lyj, though, walked a different path. Driven by the pursuit of knowledge and a desire to unlock the deepest secrets of magic itself, he quickly determined that an ordered society had more to offer than he had to gain by shunning it or tearing it down. When the community thrives, there is more available for everyone, and everyone includes him. There are plenty of such people who would gladly lie, cheat, or steal as soon as they're sure they're not being watched, but Lyj isn't one of them. To him, it's much less complicated and less likely to come back and bite him (thus disrupting his studies) if he simply plays along with all of society's rules. To that end, he has set himself up as an investigator for hire, putting his analytical skills and vast array of knowledge to good use for the community while occasionally freelancing adventuring work as necessary - putting one's skills to practical use is the only way to perform proper testing, after all. Behaving as a valuable member of society is important to his goals, as he has never been particularly capable (or interested) when it comes to making 'friends'. He's not Good - he's just done the math. He comes now to the Stolen Lands in pursuit of a new arena in which to test his burgeoning theory of Unified Magic. In the civilized lands, there were always other spellcasters, other people of power looking to carve out their own niche, and the constant competition was wearing thin. Out here in the wilderness, there was an opportunity for those willing to take the risk; a chance to build something of true significance and shape a corner of the world to his desire. Logic demanded that the risk be taken, and if Lyj had ever been anything, logical was it.
I haven't had the time, unfortunately, to go over your game yet, so I haven't come up with any personalized hooks to your current players or NPCs. That said, I already have a hook or two for Lyj in place: There are a couple of stories I've written for him towards the bottom of the profile. Check out the spoiler labeled That Which Should Remain Hidden. The mystery he intends on solving could easily lead him to the Stolen Lands; perhaps the conspirators have fled out to the wilderness, or are attempting to ingratiate themselves into the burgeoning kingdom's court, or even just set a red herring for him to follow. As for me personally, I'm pretty dang well-versed in Pathfinder (been playing since the beta gave a much-needed kick in the pants to 3.5), and can generally post once a day, although I tend to do so at odd hours of the day, as I work nights. I like to think I'm a decent poster/writer, but judge for yourself - check out the profile for a writing sample if you like. ![]()
![]() I've been doing a little tinkering with some fluff for Lyj. I've updated his Relationships with a random NPC I made up for Kenabres, where I figure he has spent the majority of his time since growing up orphaned (let me know if you'd rather I changed them to reflect a specific NPC or if they're inappropriate), as well as threw in this little story about him in one of his dealings with the local watch - presumably, this took place a few years ago, before he formally joined the Hellknights. It's a pretty loose interpretation of Kenabres's social structures and Lyj's capabilities, so it's all subject to change, of course, but it amused me. Enjoy. Spoiler: ”He’s staring at me again,” muttered Corporal Barrick nervously.
Sergeant Fraekis looked up from his inspection of the debris littered around the overturned cart. ”Ah, don’t worry about him, Poe. He’s not harming anyone.” ”That’s easy for you to say, Sarge.” the Corporal returned. ”He always stares at me.” He shuffled around to the side of the cart the Sergeant was on, breathing a little sigh of relief when he cut off his line of sight to the subject of their conversation. Fraekis chuckled. ”Probably because you’re always so nervous around him. It’s like dangling a bone in front of a dog and expecting it not to sit up and pay attention.” He shook his head ruefully. ”You know how he is. He’s always trying to figure out what makes us tick, and you tick pretty loud.” Barrick grimaced. ”Well, I just wish Captain Sparks wouldn’t keep letting him follow us around. Why the hells does she call him in, anyway?” Fraekis shrugged as he bent over the body on the stones, carefully checking for wounds. ”Over my pay grade. Word has it he’s been hanging around for ages, bothering the Riftwardens and their Librarium. They even say he's been seen over at the Hellknight Fort. Maybe she’s got some kind of deal with one of them.” He stood, dusting his hands. ”Either way, we’re done here.” ”In fact, you are not.” The cold, dispassionate voice came from just behind Corporal Barrick’s left shoulder. Both watchmen jumped and whirled, hands to their swords, startled gazes finding a red-skinned figure standing there, eyeing the body with calculating interest. "Ah - inspector Lyj, we didn't...er..." Sergeant Fraekis said, lamely trailing off as without any seeming concern for their alarm, the tall horned man moved next to the corpse, a long forked tail snaking out from between a partition in his robes to lift the dead woman’s arm. He adjusted his thin spectacles, as calm as any professor delivering a particularly dry lecture. ”You will find a mark somewhere in her right pectoral region, consistent with a small weapon capable of delivering cytillesh extract, as would be consistent with the discoloration around her earlobes.” He let her arm fall uncaringly to the ground with a soft thud, his tail moving to point out her hands. ”The victim is no longer wearing a signet ring, but the designs on her fingernails are consistent with the fashion known to be favored by Lady Farrah of Ustalav, visiting dignitary.” The men of the watch stared, confusion obvious on their faces. Lyj’s yellow eyes narrowed infinitesimally, but that was the only indication of any irritation he showed. ”Relay this to Captain Sparks, and you will undoubtedly find the victim went missing from a function of some social importance, possibly displaying symptoms of confusion or memory loss before her apparent disappearance.” He glanced down towards the corpse, the barest hint of disdain in his unmoving expression. ”I would also postulate that the perpetrator is possessed of a great deal of wealth, without a similar amount of intelligence. A criminal with any talented aspirations at successful assassination would not go so far as to procure such an exotic poison as cytillesh and then not bother to properly dispose of the corpse.” He and the guards looked at each other for a moment. After a pause, he raised one eyebrow artfully. ”I believe that observation fulfills my obligation to your organization for today. Inform your Captain we are, as she puts it, 'even' for the incident involving the break-in of my domicile twenty-three days ago.” His icy gaze met Corporal Barrick's directly. "One corpse made, another found." The Corporal paled, and the tiefling's head tilted, as if considering a puzzle. After a few seconds, he nodded sharply, then suddenly turned on his heel and strode off, his business apparently concluded. The Sergeant looked on, unsure if he should be amused or horrified. There was a beat, then he spoke to Barrick out of the side of his mouth. "You're ticking again, lad." ![]()
![]() Hm. I think that Lyj has some respect for both the Orders of the Gate and the Scourge, but he has a few quibbles with their specific ideologies; with the Gate, he believes they rely too much on their summoned allies instead of their own skill with magic (although he can't deny the efficiency of their course), and the Scourge often punish lawbreakers swiftly and harshly before all their usefulness has been wrung from them (the waste seems illogical to him). If he's forced (or convinced) to join one, I think he'll end up with the Gate and try to convince them that pure magic without reliance on summoning infernal assistance is the more efficient route, but for the moment, his allegiance remains not to one order of knights, but to Order itself, and thus the Hellknights as a whole. ![]()

![]() After a bit of consideration, I think I'm actually going to switch Lyj's secondary class to Alchemist (Mindchemist archetype). It makes me very sad to do so, since the flavor of Empiricist definitely appealed to me; Lyj is totally trying to be a Holmes-ish detective, the flavor fit so perfectly! But... I would essentially be getting no use whatsoever out of the Investigator's studied strike ability, since I intend to avoid melee like the plague, so I'd basically be using the class for the inspiration mechanic and a bonus to some skills. Not that I didn't like that idea - it was kinda awesome, actually - but I can get a hell of a lot more out of Alchemist bombs, mutagen (or more specifically, cognatogen), and that sweet double Int bonus to knowledge checks. So yeah, Mindchemist. Unless you can talk me out of it, that is (I'm almost hoping you do - Investigator is such a good fit, flavor-wise). ![]()
![]() A couple of things you asked for I didn't actually address directly yet. First, Mythic Path! It was probably obvious, but I'm going for Archmage. Next, Lyj's major goals. First; For most of his life, Lyj has been working to reconcile all the different paths to arcane magic under one theory. He has used his scholarly bent to turn his natural sorcerous powers towards the path of the arcanist, and later the investigator, in an attempt to conquer the nuts and bolts of magic itself. He is convinced there is a way to unify the various schools of magic under a single umbrella, possibly even unlocking the secret to divine power without faith. Whether he's right or not, well...that's another question. But it's his theory, and his life's work; he intends for it to be his legacy to the world (if he doesn't figure out how to achieve immortality, that is). Think of it as string theory, but for magic. You've heard of quantum mathematicians? Well, he's a quantum magician. =D A relevant quote from a brief little story I put together for a previous version of him:
Of course, this has the side benefit of possibly unlocking the key to ultimate power - which is also pretty much fine by him. ![]()
![]() Dragonofashandflame wrote: Here are the submissions so far, including the ones that are mostly done, but missing a few things. Nice. A note, though: this version of Lyj is actually gonna be Lawful Evil, not Neutral. My fault, I left the alignment on the profile different from the previous game I submitted him to. Changed it now! ![]()
![]() Alright, so my crunch and whatnot are coming along (double spellcasters=so complicated, what on earth was I thinking). I'm debating between the Empiricist and Questioner archetypes for Investigator at the moment, but in the meantime: a couple quick questions. I saw you approved a Drawback and extra trait for somebody, so I figured I'd hang on to Meticulous, if that's alright, and go with Riftwarden Orphan for my Campaign Trait. Also, technically speaking, Breadth of Experience is restricted to dwarves, elves, and gnomes, but tieflings also live plenty long. Would you be alright with waiving the normal (pretty arbitrary) race prereq on that feat? Finally, just an odd note - despite being largely disinterested in talking to people, thanks to an odd combination of traits and Tiefling bonuses, Lyj will end up an oddly good face man, subbing in Intelligence for Charisma in several social skills (after first level, anyway - turns out there's a lot of knowledge skills). ![]()
![]() Okay, yes. I have a a character I've been tinkering with for a while (and always had the games drop out from under me before he got a chance to come out and play), who I think is pretty perfect for this one. I'm gonna drop my standard pitch for the character, then get into the specifics for this campaign. Presenting: Ta'lyringephxlyj, the Demon of the Library Evil comes in many forms. For some, it means you spend your days plotting doom in a tower, or perhaps bathing in the blood of the innocent, or even simply bilking poor rubes out of their money at your over-priced shop. Ultimately, though, evil comes down to one thing - the willingness to step over others to achieve your goals. Behaving as a valuable member of society is important to his goals, as he has never been particularly capable (or interested) when it comes to making 'friends'. He's not Good - he's just done the math.
Obviously, I'd need to play with a lot of the details of his current profile - his background and whatnot are tailored far too specifically for other things, plus his crunch is just totally wrong. If you think the concept could work, then I'll get to work on redesigning the numbers. Also, in this game, I'd refocus Lyj's personality slightly; he's already very much a law-and-order type, but not quite to the degree of your typical Hellknight. I'd tip him further towards a philosophy that read something like "for my affairs to be ordered, the world must be ordered first" for this one. Still primarily selfish, but in a way the Hellknights would probably approve of, as well as giving him motivation to join the Order. As for me personally, I'm pretty dang well-versed in Pathfinder (been playing since the beta gave a much-needed kick in the pants to 3.5), and can generally post once a day, although I tend to do so at odd hours of the day, as I work nights. I like to think I'm a decent poster/writer, but judge for yourself - check out the profile for a writing sample if you like (again, the Lyj portrayed there would need to be retailored, but it should give you a decent idea of how I write). Oh, and finally, full disclosure: I have run through the first couple of books of Wrath of the Righteous before. I'm fairly confident in my ability to keep out-of-game knowledge separate from in-game knowledge, but if that's a dealbreaker, I understand. ![]()
![]() This sounds interesting - I am thoroughly tempted by the prospect of building our own little company from the ground up. I'll be submitting a reworked version of Lyj here (at the moment, he's still up at level 5 from a game that's stalled out in recruitment, not to mention a backstory tailored specifically for that game's setting). I'll need to tinker a good bit, but here's the gist of his personality and whatnot. Lyj in a Nutshell:

He's not Good - he's just done the math. Mechanically speaking, he's a Lawful Evil Tiefling Arcanist. He'd bring in some arcane caster power to things, as well as a decent array of utility skills (especially knowledges). Obviously, I'd need to play with a lot of the details of his current profile - his background and whatnot are tailored far too specifically for other things, plus his crunch is too high - but if he sounds viable to you, I'll get to that shortly. As for me personally, I'm pretty dang well-versed in Pathfinder (been playing since the beta gave a much-needed kick in the pants to 3.5), and can generally post once a day, although I tend to do so at odd hours of the day, as I work nights. Be aware that the Lyj portrayed there is a slightly nicer one than the one I would intend to bring to this campaign, but they behave more or less the same; it's mostly just a question of the inner monologue, and maybe how they might respond to temptations of power. ![]()

Cool cool. I may cave in and get myself a Ring of Sustenance, but I doubt it; I really need to try and save up for that Blessed Book, or I am going to waste so much gold on writing spells down. As for downtime: As a character who's been living in Absalom for some time, should I set aside some cash for lodging/furnishing purposes, or not worry about it? By the by, sorry about all the weird detail questions; these are things my brain can't help but dwell on when a character takes up residence in my head. ![]()

Oh, wait, one more little question - I still have a few open language slots, and I was wondering if there are any particular dialects that might make sense for this future Golarion. ![]()
![]() Me, I'm just glad to hear about the crafting feats and spells. =) Seeing as I have two crafting feats (Scribe Scroll and Craft Wondrous Item), does that mean I jump up higher than 13,125 for a limit, or would you rather leave that ceiling there (totally reasonable to do so, just trying to be clear). In fact, now I think about it, it would only ever be reasonable to increase the ceiling if a significant chunk of my gold would be spent in scrolls. Which, actually, it will, but...hm. I'm not sure what my point there was. Also, something that amused me - if I were playing the LE Lyj, my drawback would totally be Power-Hungry. ![]()
![]() Very nearly done here. I mostly just need to finish up my spells and gear. A couple of questions to help me round things out: 1) This one got passed over before, I think: Would you allow Breadth of Experience? It's technically restricted to dwarves, gnomes, and elves, but I think that's mostly just an artifact of those being the core races that lived more than a century. 2) What's your feelings on those with Craft Item feats making use of those feats for their own gear? For the moment, I've purchased as if unable to do so, but I'd be more than happy to have some money freed up. (First thing I'll be making given the time/money available is a Blessed Book, for reasons that will become clear during the next question.) 3) Those of us who need to spend money to learn new spells (stupid spellbooks) - can we do so freely, or is there a limit on how many spells we can already know? This is a pretty important question for me, as Lyj's nature means he basically learns every spell he thinks could possibly ever be of any use given sufficient time and money. It gets expensive quick. I've only done so for a few spells right now, but will probably add more given the go-ahead. Also, for however many spells I should be getting, should I pay standard fees for borrowing spellbooks, generally half again what it costs to write it into said book? ![]()
