::blink:: ::blink:: You murdered a helpless person? That is reprehensible. Kosz will not condone murder. Kosz' last statement inferred that by staying death's hand, Tina chose to saddle the party with this lunatic.

Kosz claps a gauntlet clad hand upon Tina's shoulder as he bends down to quietly admonish, "Now you might begin to recognize the merits of allowing your opponent an honorable death in battle."

"Certainly not until we have secured him against further spellcasting. Even weakened, he could prove a formidable opponent." So saying, Kosz begins to pull out fine rope from his backpack to tie up the unconscious dwarf.

Kosz moves over to the area that Kel pointed out. "If it is a grave, I do not feel it proper to go digging it up. If we are going to rouse the dwarf, then we can include this in our interrogation. Doing so may save us the work or it may provide us with cause to justify it."

Kosz turns to regard the unconscious dwarf and small woman, "The dwarf lives. Tina is right in that if he regains consciousness, he may know of a way to the surface."

We were losing applications this morning at work and when I got home I had about 10 minutes of Internet before it started to crash altogether. It seems like it was just a bad day all around.

I am going to the IC thread now and will post.

For the second time in a minute, Kosz slowly rises from the ground. "Oww..."

Looking around at the others, he again reaches down for his morningstar asking, "Is everyone okay?"

"I am afraid that I do not possess any receptacles for the holy water."

Looking through the gap to see that there is no other point of ingress into the cavern, Kosz looks back to the other scouts. "I think we have seen everything there is to know. Let's head back and report our findings."

Returning to the cavern entrance, Kosz waves the others forward. "There is only this one entrance. We should all hold up in here as some of us work to clear that large piece of debris from in front of the door to the building."

Looking to the human fighter, Kosz asks, "Anevia, will you watch the entrance for anything trying to come at us?"

This is all assuming that the cavern is big enough for the building to sit in the center of it and not built out of the wall.

At the shieldman's words, Kosz nods his helmeted head. "I agree. We could do with a secure position to fall back and this one comes ready lit. I recommend that we scout out the boundaries of this cavern and determine if there are any other entry points which we will need to defend."

Pointing his morningstar to the left, Kosz continues, "While I don't normally recommend splitting up the group, I suggest that some stay here while the rest move around the cavern. That way, if there is something else in here, we can drive it back to the main group. I think that Kel should stay here to best protect the main group. I can lead the scouting party. Rex and Tina both seem to work best at range, so I think one should come and the other stay. Deia and Max, you both seem to be some sort of mages. Perhaps one of you could come and the other stay to support the base group?"

As he waits for the group to respond, he moves up to Max and quietly hands him the last of the scales. "I found these in that first cavern where we landed. I have been waiting to see who they belong."

To the right, the passage goes on in darkness farther than I am able to see."

I wanted to wait to respond so I could make my IC post to illustrate my OC point.

We need to look to the Daylight spell for a more complete understanding of how light and dark spells interact with each other.

Quote:
Daylight brought into an area of magical darkness (or vice versa) is temporarily negated, so that the otherwise prevailing light conditions exist in the overlapping areas of effect.

This means that light spells are suppressed by the darkness spell because it is a higher level spell. Walking into that same darkness with daylight temporarily negates both the darkness and daylight spells (as is written in the daylight spells) leaving the prevailing light conditions (in our case, total darkness) as the only level of light.

Continual flame brought into an area of darkness will also be negated for the duration it is within the darkness. Likewise, that same darkness is also negated so the prevailing light condition, without any magical aid, exists.

Let's remember that in the game, the terms 'counter' and 'dispel' have specific meanings. You can cast continual flame to counter or dispel darkness as they are both 2nd level spells and diametrically opposed to each other. This works just like any other counterspell except that you do not have to use the exact same spell (e.g. darkness for darkness) to counter it. In effect, you must ready the one spell to counter the other spell as it is cast. Additionally, all light and darkness spells are written so that they can be used to dispel its opposite. This works just like dispel magic. Remember, too, that you cannot ready a spell to counter a spell-like ability, so we could not have readied to counter the darkmantle's darkness as it is not a spell, but a spell-like ability.

Of course, that is just how the rules are written. If you would like to use some other system for it, that's up to you and, as you have extended the decision, the players. For my two cents, I would say that a higher level spell should automatically dispel a diametrically opposed spell without need for a caster level check.

At the gunslinger's shout of warning, Kosz looks up in time to see the pitch black creature descending from the lightless depths of the fissure riven ceiling. The monster's appearance suddenly shifts into the negative aspect black and white of darkvision with the suppression of the magical lights behind him. At the cries of the now sightless humans, the divinely descended paladin draws upon his heritage and calls out, "Lady of Doors, open their eyes to your stark light!" His morningstar erupts in the brilliant light of day as a cold steel halo briefly appears to the party floating over the smiling face of the mask hanging from the back of his helmet. The daylight shines forth, banishing the unnatural darkness surrounding the creature and momentarily overwhelming the magical lights of the party.

Used spell-like ability to dispel the darkness

This happens even when I try to proofread and preview multiple times before posting. Usually I get the changes in within the first few minutes of the post going up, and so most people probably won't even notice them, sometimes I get them after the post has been up for 20 minutes or more. Like, for instance, my most recent post in the gameplay thread. I completely forgot Deia's knowledge check when I originally posted it. So it's just something to look out for.
