Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl, an unparalleled sniper, and potent oracle of wind, had come to appreciate the big guy in their early scouting missions together. She became Turniphead's trusted scout, spy, enforcer, and eventually Herald. Sometimes they don disguises and join the mere mortals for drink, a game of cards, and adventure-- just for the halibut.

Is it dead, Jim? No DM posts for 2 weeks.

I totally grappled mine with the same technique! Are we in round 2 with Aula leading? On her turn (16 init) Kestryl does the following:

I am so not good in unarmed close quarters combat. Gotta get some room.

Feigning sea sickness (not hard after her last "move") Kestryl says to the pirate holding her Whut? Whuz goin' on? Are we shtill at the pub? I think I dranked too mushhh. Gonna be shickkk!
Bluff:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12

If there's time she'll also try to pull a small bladed weapon off the guy holding her.(short sword if there is one) Sleight of Hand:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Sooo... trying that again.

Keeping the 16 initiative from last time.

This time making an acrobatics check to get off the stairwell. If successful, also trying to get my sling up & ready.

Acrobatics:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
Edit: Frack! I loathe this dice roller. Demonically high number of 1's

Ok, I just did not want to be a bother and delay the game. I'll jump back right in.

Yay! Who else could I have shared my love of your big brother with?

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Deciding that the others are more intimidating than she could ever hope to be, Kestryl uses her quickness and stealth to slip to the darkest corner of the cabin. There she unwinds a sling from her waist and eyes the back of someone's head for the first stone.

Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Stealth:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Yay, DM Ace is back! Let the indentured servitude continue!

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

@Brendan--- I presume you mean con as in "convention?" Not con as in "confidence heist"? Cuz if its the second one, you totally snitched on him.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl gives the solid lock a last frustrated jiggle, before slipping away.

If only I had a decent set of tools, then I'd show them what's what. But... you don't put a lock that good on nothin'. I bet there's good stuff in there, mine or somebody else's. There's more 'n one way to fleece a Cheliaxian. Mebbe I can swipe the key... Or talk the Quartermaster inta letting me take a peek. Which one was the quartermaster again? The half-orc chick? Great! She's a fine piece o' work. But I've charmed worse...

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kinda waiting for rulings on my search attempts. Hard to move forward without being sure I'm still, you know, breathing.

Its ok tho' boss. You said it would be slow until July.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl waits for the big guy to settle down a bit, and then approaches him. I was going to say, it would be great to have you as a lookout when I explore again tomorrow night. And since you can see in the dark too, that's even better. Neither one of us will need any light. I'd feel better knowing someone has my back. Will you help me?

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Presuming she didn't get caught and keelhauled herself during exploration, Kestryl will slink in and join the conversation. Also the Perception above gets another +2 from Eye for Plunder= 17.

Checking around the room, Kestryl realizes where the "real" conversation is happening, she listens for a while before joining in. I don't have much chance to talk to folks. I'm up in the rigging with Aula and Brendan all day. But, I--I started looking for my stuff tonight. I'd feel a lot better if I knew where my bow was. What about you guys? Anything you want me to keep an eye out for while I'm looking?

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Sorry, I meant to post this with my earlier thread
Kestryl can't even attempt to hide how sickened she is at the fate of the keelhauled man. It's finally sinking in: She's been abducted by ruthless bastards. At first the whole thing had been a lark. She'd wanted to get away, and now she was away... into something far, far worse. At least the Chelish man after her, had some reason to want revenge, but this, this joy in another's suffering, had no reason but insanity. She clenched her shaking fists, yearning for her bow to put an arrow right in the eye of the viscious Plugg. But she was weaponless, helpless, and sick.

First thing, I've gotta get my bow back. Some of these others look like the can fight. Would they, if they had their weapons? Plugg and the captain look really strong, but maybe if there's enough of us...

Sense Motive for who else is upset by the Keelhauling: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Come nightfall Kestryl has no trouble seeing in the dark. She decides to begin searching for her gear. She'll start by eliminating what seems to be easier possibilities first. Tonight she'll try her luck at the quartermasters store.

If there's time after, she'd like to join the others upstairs for conversation, but if she only gets one action, she'll search.

Likely rolls needed:
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Stealth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
Disable Device: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

In the list of rooms on board ship, some have dashes and some have ">" in front. Does that indicate which rooms we have free access to, and which we haven't seen yet?

Kestryl is eyeing an exploratory mission, and trying to choose a destination.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl isn't that upset by being press-ganged. She would rather have walked on board under her own power, but at least she gets to be in the open air-- her favorite. Mostly she's cooperating and keeping an eye out for how things work. She is a little thrown by Aula's continued attempts to talk to her.
I wanted to get away, and now I'm 'away'. But everywhere I turn this Cheliaxian is right over me shoulder. At least she seems to know a little something about ships. Mebbe she can help me a little, afore she guts me in my sleep.

Action is talking with her fellow riggers.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5 Bah! She's impossible to read
Influence: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Do you know *how* I'm supposed to repair this rigging? I've never actually been on a boat before. I'm pretty quick with my hands though, if someone can tell me what needs doin'.
Climb and Dex checks were each 14's above.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Spoiler:

Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Dex: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 (no profession: sailor)

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestry gives Taize an apologetic glance for not being more help. Catch ya later. Maybe now you can get that cooking position?

Kestryl whispers to Brendan Rigger, is that good? At least we'll be in the open air, right? I couldn't stand too much time inside this smelly bucket.

Her heart drops when the Chelish woman is named as a rigger, too. You'd think getting kidnapped and taken out to sea would finally free me from the Chexians, but noooo.

To Aula she says, Uh, yeh, right, we should talk. Seems like fate has got all sorts of fun planned for me.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

If she isn't prevented from doing it, Kestryl will go give Taize a hand. Are you a *good* cook? Or mebbe you got somethin' to help a hangover? That mickey they slipped us is like daggers in my eyes.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl climbs down with a smirk at Plugg.
I could feather fall it down, with an acrobatic twist just to show off.... Nah. No need to give away all my tricks.
On reaching the deck she sniffs at Plugg Yeah, it did smell better up there.

I hope I can just stay up this time, clear my head until I can figger this thing out.

She watches her new compatriots and their captors closely, calculating the odds. Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

And she'll give Lucia and the others a hand near the top.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Do I need to roll more or am I there?

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl doesn't mind climbing. Waiting in high places for a likely target has always been one of her favorite things. Besides, the rolling of the waves, the stench of sweat, and the taste on her tongue all conspire to do her stomach no favors.

Mebbe the ship will smell better from higher up. With that, she gives a good effort at climbing.

climb:

If the ship has a Crow's nest, that will be her hoped-for position. Can she use her 50' move to go faster as well?
Kestryl will attempt to go 25' per round. I'll roll a couple extras in case of any fails.
Climb: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl whispers to Taize Fine. Let's wait and see what's what. So far this 'shared destiny' of yours is turning out just grand. Is it too late to pick a different Samsaran to share a destiny with?

To her swarthy "escort" she says Watch it, mister. I'm movin', I'm movin'. Grab me again and you'll lose that hand.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Putting in my two coppers a little late. Luckily it seems to be along with the majority.

One boat. There may be attrition anyway, so...

Action style: I too like the Pirates of the Caribbean style. Humor, swashbuckling, some curses, some undead... Some dark elements, but not you know, Cthulu.

Romance: I think leave it up to the PC's to choose. If there are some romance-worthy npc's floating around, that's fine, but mostly up to the characters to choose. Kestryl's emotionally at the stage where flirting consists of stupid pranks to get his attention. Not so ready for finding a soul-mate.

Treasure: As long as there's balance long term.

GM Ace:
I took the Eye for Plunder trait which says 50 gp worth of extra loot found on the ship. I'd be happy if it were Masterwork Thieves tools, and some nice arrows. Just a request... Couldn't afford the thieves tools starting off.

Backstory: Repeating: Mostly survival, then looking for survivors of her caravan, and revenge for those killed. If there's a chance to tie in with Aula's storyline that might be cool.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl awakens to the sounds of the others' grumbles. What the...? Where am I? Damn Chexian b@*+@ must've popped me on the back of the head, and just when I was thinkin' she weren't after me. Waitaminnit...

Her eyes clear and her low light/darkvision kick in. Kestryl sees all of her "comrades" from the bar in assorted cells, including Aula. We're all captives? On a boat? "Living the dream"-- now that's funny. Let me pull the axe outta me head, and then I'll see what I can do with these locks...

Whoever clocked me couldnta waited 5 mins? I was gonna sweep the table with a full house.

"There is some foul play here." He moves and grabs one of the cards he just threw down and reveals an ace of spades. "Young lady you have just dealt me a card that I have already thrown away." He tosses down a card he was just dealt, it also being the ace of spades.

Oh that. We're playing with a double deck. Don't they do that where you're from? It helps if there's lots of players. Also it cuts down on card-counting. You weren't counting cards, were you? Besides, most people would be happy if I dealt 'em *two* aces.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl deals Aula her card with an ingratiating smile. I- I'm not really sure what you mean. I don't think my dealing style is anything that special.

Is she still talking about cards? She hasn't clapped bracelets on and hauled me off. Unless she's just waiting until there are fewer people in the room.

Sense Motive for Aula's intentions towards her: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

Nah, she's not here for me... I don't think. Still she's gotta sharp eye, I'd better play it cool.

Kestryl adopts a casual tone as she deals cards to the rest of the players. Are you coming into port, or heading out? Me, I'm hoping to catch a good berth. Gonna see what's available in the morning. Name's Kestryl by the by.

Bluff-she has no idea what Aula's talking about: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Sorry for the double-post. I got interupted halfway between discarding and dealing new cards. I'll just use what I get this time and disregard previous. -grumble-

Spoiler:

Discard 2-3(diamonds) 4-4(clubs)

Keep 13-4(K clubs), 9-4(clubs), 9-1(spades), 10-4(clubs)

1d4 ⇒ 31d13 ⇒ 9

1d4 ⇒ 21d13 ⇒ 13

Sleight of Hand to discard extra card: 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 8 + 5 = 23 (Extra +5 for Kestryl since its her *lucky* deck.)

Drops 10-4(clubs)

Hand now: KC, 9C, 9S, 9D, KH

Aula:
For a brief moment you thought you saw six cards in Kestryl's hand. (Curse you and your sharp perception!)

Grand Lodge

Kestryl's heart gives a jump when the Chexian woman comes to the table. Does she recognize me? She doesn't seem to. But why is she staring at me so intently? Oh, right, cards. Kestryl forces a weak smile at the woman.

Welcome to our little pasttime. How many cards can I get each of you? I'll take two.

Spoiler:

Discard 2-3(diamonds) and 9-1(spades)

1d4 ⇒ 31d13 ⇒ 11

Sleight of hand: 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 5 = 25

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

With a last look around to see if there are any more takers, Kestryl throws in 4 coppers.
The pot is 10 coppers.
Its 4 for Taize to stay in, 1 for Jensen.

I think I feel the winds shifting. I'll see your 3, and raise 1 more.

You can still get in this hand, until we draw the additional cards.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl throws in a copper of her own and begins dealing to herself, Jensen, and Taize.

Anyone else ready to test their fortunes?

Still no Peeking!:

1d4 ⇒ 41d13 ⇒ 13
1d4 ⇒ 41d13 ⇒ 9
1d4 ⇒ 41d13 ⇒ 4
1d4 ⇒ 11d13 ⇒ 9
1d4 ⇒ 31d13 ⇒ 2

Sleight of hand
1d4 ⇒ 41d13 ⇒ 10

DC15 check: 1d20 + 8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 5 = 16 Kestryl gets an additional +5 because its *her* special deck. Hey, its my game! And why are you peeking? Cheater!

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Fine! The pot is yours! The wind doesn't seem to be blowing my way tonite. Kestryl tosses in her cards in disgust.

@Jensen Thanks for beta-testing with me. Although some might accuse you of cheating with 2-- 3 of spades. I know its a typo though. Let's see if we can't wrangle some more people into the game. That was a simple hand, let's see if the next one involves some real or imagined cheating.

Kestryl gathers up the cards and begins shuffling. So step on up, who wants a hand? It takes a copper to play. It takes skill and lady fortune's favor to win.

5 Card Draw, Updated Rules:

Basic 5 Card Draw Poker, with some adaptations for PbP

Phase I- Ante
. Ante a copper
. Deal yourself 5 cards with the formula 'dice' 1d4;1d13 '/dice'
. Reroll any duplicates in your own hand
. If you choose to cheat (with sleight of hand, magic, etc), roll yourself an extra card.
. If you cheat make a DC 15 check for whatever method you used. If you fail miserably, please write that into your in-character narrative.
. Put your cards in a spoiler

Cards are read by this formula:
1d4= Suit. 1=Spades, 2=Hearts, 3=Diamonds, 4=Clubs
1d13= Number. 1=Ace, 2=2,... 11=J, 12=Q, 13=K

Phase II- Bet
. Betting will go for 24 hours from first bet placed.
. Betting is in any order (to speed things up)
. Each character may bet up to 3 times
. Bets are 'check,' 'raise,' 'fold,' and 'see'
. Anyone not betting in 24 hours is considered folded

Phase III- Draw 1, 2, or 3 new cards
. Announce Discards and Keepers in Spoiler
. Roll 1, 2 or 3 new cards.
. Reroll any duplicates in your own hand.

Phase IV- Winner Resolution
. No second round of betting (to speed things up)
. Show cards
. If more than one player has the same card, clearly there was cheating. Resolve in character.
. If you suspect someone of peeking at your cards, resolve in character.
. If you suspect someone of cheating in the first round, resolve in character.

Feel free to make up new rules appropriate to your character-- familiars spying, great perception checks, great bluff checks, etc. Some may need to be announced in ooc's. Try to make it more about role-playing your character than winning at poker. Have fun!

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl tosses 5 more into the pot, making 23 copper.

I'll call your 5. Now lets see if your cards match your courage. 2 pair, Jacks over fives

Show hand:
5, 31, 24, 50, 27= 5 spades, 5 diamonds, J hearts, J clubs, A diamonds

quick ooc experiment:
to see if theres a way to make the "cards" easier to read.
d4:1-spades, 2-hearts, 3-diamonds, 4-clubs;
d13: A-K
1d4 ⇒ 11d13 ⇒ 9
Ok, that worked. That's a 9 of Spades.
New numbering system for next hand!

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

With all of 'em watchin', I'd better play it straight the first couple of hands. Lure more of 'em in before I start winnin' heaps of coin.

Ooh nice! I'll bet 3 copper.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

I specifically put multiple-player duplicates into the game. It is the chance to accuse each other of cheating-- and roleplay it out. Since I don't have the programming chops to avoid duplicates-- I included duplicates into the rules as "Someone is Cheating-- and... go."

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

OK, we'll have another betting round after the second set of cards, since its just two of us this round. But I planned to cut the second round of betting if/when the group gets larger.

Fine! Here's yer card. Don't choke on it! I'll take two

Cards:

keep Ace Diamonds, Five Diamonds, Five Spades,
discard the others
2d54 ⇒ (50, 50) = 100

reroll duplicate 1d54 ⇒ 24

Now add Seven Hearts, Jack Clubs

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

I'll see your 5, and raise 2 more. The bet is 7.

I forgot to mention "see" and "call" as options, in addition to "check", "raise", and "fold". I also forgot to mention its a copper to get in the game. The bets are above that.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl looks at Lucia and Taize expectantly. You in?

She deals herself and Jensen five cards each.

Kestryl taps the five cards in front of Jensen impatiently. Are you gonna bet or what?

She looks at her own cards

No Peeking!:

5d54 ⇒ (33, 27, 47, 31, 5) = 143

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

I was trying to think how to get a card game going. This is what I've come up with. It's not perfect, but workable enough for us to roleplay.

Kestryl's Poker:

*5 Card Draw

*You will deal yourself five cards to start, using Paizo's dice roller.

*Cards will be generating using the formula "dice"5d54"/dice", but with brackets instead of quotations.

*Reference the chart below to see what your cards are.

*If you have a duplicate, re-roll it.

**If you have any ability to cheat... extra appendages, slight of hand, magic, or just pure recklessness... roll an extra card.

*Put your cards in a spoiler, and we'll trust people not to peek.

**The only betting will be at this point**

*Betting will go on, in any order (to speed things up)until each player has had 2 chances to *raise,* *check,* or *fold.* A player will be considered folded if they don't post in 24 hours.

*Every player that has not folded can discard 1, 2, or 3 cards. -announce in a spoiler your keepers and discards-

*Then deal yourselves another 1,2, or 3 new cards.

*Re-roll any duplicates in your own hand.

*Show your final hand. (write out what it is)

*The winner takes his money.

**If 2 or more players have duplicate cards, clearly one of them was cheating. Roleplay to determine who the cheat is.**

**If anyone suspects another player of peeking at his original 5 cards, this suspicion is also encouraged to be role-played.**

**If anyone suspects another player of cheating in the first round, this suspicion can be determined by role-playing (looking at his spoiler does not count as proof. You must deal with your suspicion in-character).**

1d54=Card:

1=A Spades
2=2

4=4
5=5

Example:

My first five cards:
5d54 ⇒ (3, 3, 40, 1, 51) = 98

Ignoring the total. Rerolling the duplicate 3.
1d54 ⇒ 28

My first five cards are:3 Spades, 2 Diamonds, A Clubs, A Spades, Q Clubs

*Betting happens.

I'll keep the 2 aces, discard the rest.

3d54 ⇒ (39, 45, 11) = 95
K Diamonds, 6 clubs, J spades.

I've got a pair of aces and that's it.

*No more betting, just show hands, and try to decide a winner.*

Kestryl shuffles again and gestures for Jensen to cut the deck. Jester's wild, and the Queens rule. This hand's just for a little warm-up. Have some more rum, put some coin on the table, and we'll play for real.

As she deals to Jensen, she gives Taize and Lucia an inquisitive glance if they'd like to be dealt in.

Giving a nod at Taize's pendant, she adds According to that thing, it looks like half the bar shares a destiny with us. Maybe we're all going to take over the bar, and run a quilting circle together.

Seeing the hobgoblin hock a loogy or maybe not.

Are there rules somewhere for how we can play cards on PbP? or do we just make it up? And is it a normal deck or a harrow deck?

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

If you're buying, pull up a seat. Play cards by any chance? Kestryl pulls her "lucky" deck out again and shuffles. She gives Taize another once over. D'ya play cards? Or is it no fun for ya, since ya see the past and the future and whatnot? And what about him? She jerks her head towards Jensen? Is his fate tangled up with ours? What's in his cards?

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

What? Huh? Kestryl turns from her furtive monitoring of the Chelaxian woman, to face one of the most exotic looking women she's ever seen.

In this life...? Are you Samsaran? Really? I heard you were just tall tales, you know, to con the rubes. Pretty good shtick; not only can you tell the future, but you can tell some story about a down on her luck schmo being the current incarnation of some great queen of the past. I mean who wouldn't suck that up with a straw? I'm Kestryl by-the-by. So c'mon, don't con a con, just between us girls, that past life thing aint no thing, is it?

She just waves her re-bottled rum at the barmaid and says, Thanks, I'm good for now.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

Kestryl had finally finished draining the rum from her clothes back into the bottle, and was taking discreet pulls. Next she pulled out her favorite deck of cards, and began scanning the room for likely marks.

When her eyes found the Chelaxian warrior, however, her coaxing smile froze. They couldn't have followed me all the way here, could they? I have *got* to get on a ship and get out of town. Kestryl thought better of the whole gambling thing and began discreetly making her way to a shadowy corner on the opposite side of the bar instead.

Grand Lodge

Female Sylph Rogue- Sniper

@DM Ace: For our role playing amusement, could you set the scene? Are we still in the Formidably Maid, or are we on the ship, waking up from our Shanghai'ing?
