"Aye--makes sense, sir!" Jack chimes in, backing Logan's play. "The place seems to be in better shape than we were led to believe. Half hour sounds about right."

As if he read Canacha's mind, Jack approaches her and whispers his report into her ear. "My eyes only detect one crack in here," (he surreptitiously pats her rump) "but it looks quite dangerous."

Jack maintains his stony visage, though he turns to eyeball the mouthy guard briefly.

Hmm...a Thrune commands Menador Keep, eh? Jack tries to recall which Thrune might be stationed here, as well as anything he knows about that person.

"Plue there's that whole Glorious Reclamation thing going on throughout the rest of the empire," Jack chimes in, giving Canacha's hand a little squeeze. Brains and Boom, this one!

Jack has no complaints about going with Canacha to see Rexus; on the contrary, he seems quite intrigued by the idea (or of seeing Canacha wear something steamy).

Jack gave Canacha's request a great deal of thought before answering. "For you I could do anything! But...that sort of thing might undo anything we've attained this night. Remember--Lady Manticce is but one of several kings and queens in Vyre; we might tick off any monarch those creeps might be associated with. Worse, they might bring the hammer down on Queen Manticce if it gets out that we were at her party this evening."

So, Jack's sayin' there's a chance....

Jack is surprised that he's actually heard about this exotic dish and how to eat it. He spirals his corkscrew into a spider's head and raises it in salute to the queen. "Now comes the hard part...." Just when it appears he'll be unable to open the dodecahedron, its lid is popped and Jack dips his first spider into the honey sauce, raises the morsel to his lips, and bites the spider's belly off, chewing and swallowing it. He then proceeds to eat the rest of the 'dessert.'

When it comes time to present his gift to Queen Manticce, he bows low and presents the onyx spider. "I thought this item was destined for you--it's sleek and elegant...while also being quite dangerous if mistreated." After present the gift, jack flashes a quick smile and winks. "This spider is not for eating!"

Bowing again, Jack returns to the table. There, he brushes Canacha's hair back lovingly, revealing a shapely shoulder...and her right ear. He leans in, kisses her cheek, and whispers, "I told her not to eat it!"

Jack digs into his memories, somewhat certain he's heard somewhere of a similar dish. When the Queen stops and asks him about the worst sin, he thinks for a moment and says, "I'd say murder, Sometimes there are decent reasons for killing another--war, self-defense and the like--but when it's done rashly you take away the life of another, usually for wicked or selfish reasons, or for no reason at all. I find that unacceptable."

Jack manages to fight through the spiciness of the dish. When he feels that he can speak again without breathing fire, he wryly adds, "The conscientious citizen must first weigh the amount of pain likely to be suffered against the good that can be gained from an uprising...much like a chef deciding how much spice might spoil the squash."

During this part of the banquet, Jack surreptitiously observes the Chelaxian woman, trying to get a read on what she's about.

Jack is clueless as to how to proceed with the first course. Even peeking at what Canacha does, the more-ranger-than-nobleman flubs everything, as minnows find it easy to pop off his spoon and tumble to the floor. Smiling, he tries to bluff away his faux pas by commenting, "Surely you must have a cat or two on the premises, your highness. I so adore the creatures and can't resist feeding them any time I'm able!"

Even his half-joke/half-bluff falls flat, flat as one of his escaped minnows that just got stepped on by a passing servant.

Jack opens his mouth to reply but Mirabella beats him to the punch. He simply nods as the halfling says pretty much everything he'd intended to say. "Some of us hadn't even been born when the Order of the Torrent raided and broke up the guild," he adds.

He'd forgotten about the 'fellow rat' bit, so he listens intently to the old woman's reply.

Jack nods to Mirabella. "Good idea. Maybe Lady Mayapple fled from the Grey Spiders and that's how they ended up in possession of the deeds to her properties. But she may have been in league with them and had some sort of falling out. We should proceed cautiously."

For Canacha:
"You have...a room??!!" Jack asks, trying to keep from grinning. Then his face grows serious as he sits on the edge of the bed.

"Yeah, I've been thinking about that.... If we remove Thrune from Kintargo, I don't think anyone in my family could object to your 'worthiness.' If we fail in our efforts...I can't think of anyone I'd rather spend my last days with."

Jack turns his full attention to the lovely dhampir and moves in for a kiss (if she's willing).

@Mirabella: Busy canoodling at the moment.

"A room with a view does sound pretty nice right now...and I really don't walk all over the city looking for another place to stay.... I'm willing to chalk the unpleasantness up to a misunderstanding if you are, my sweet."

"Now, now dear--let's not make a scene," Jack says, interposing himself between Canacha and the old woman as best he can. "Though her 'working girl' was especially rude. She's probably just old, bitter, and jealous of your looks and youth. But more to the point, we didn't come to Vyre looking for adventure...and certainly not for bunk beds! Leave her be and let's find somewhere else to stay."

Jack Duncloak Sense Motive Check (humans): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Jack tries to get a feeling about the reason the old woman seems so eager to turn the couple away. Is she just generally against housing strangers in her inn? Does she have something to hide? Does she somehow recognize them to be Silver Ravens? Etc.

Jack grins at Canacha's words. "Seems like someone's looking to mix some pleasure in with our business here!"

The smile lessens a bit as the young nobleman gives more thought to the tasks ahead. "You know...it might not be a bad idea to split up our party a bit, and our arrival times at the inn. Perhaps Canacha and I could go in first as a travelling couple and then the rest of the group enter a bit later. That way we might gain an advantage if any foes here underestimate our numbers."

CURRENT ROUND
================================

Does Jack still need to make the Will save, since Mirabella made hers and it looks like she acts before Jack in the Init Order? I'll roll a save at the end of this post just in case, but I'm going to cut, paste, and edit Jack's Slash-O-Matic attack routine first.

Jack marvels at the light show until he realizes it's trying to invade his mind; then he tries to focus on Mira's voice and launch a counter-attack.

Jack Duncloak +1 mithral short sword (main, TWF, haste): 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 10 + 1 = 28 for magic, silver, piercing damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 (19-20) and
Jack Duncloak +1 silver short sword (off-hand, TWF, haste): 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 10 + 1 = 21 for magic, piercing, silver damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 (19-20) and
Jack Duncloak +1 mithral short sword (main; iterative; TWF, haste): 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 1 = 11 for magic, silver, piercing damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 (19-20) and
Jack Duncloak +1 silver short sword (off-hand; iterative; TWF, haste): 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 5 + 1 = 18 for magic, piercing, silver damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 (19-20) and
Jack Duncloak +1 mithral short sword (Bonus Haste Attack; TWF, haste): 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 1 = 13 for magic, silver, piercing damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 (19-20)

Jack Duncloak Will Saving Throw (if needed): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Jack Duncloak Fortitude Saving Throw: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

PHEW! I'm never going to play another TWF character on these forums! Way too much math and forum formatting tags involved! Especially when you're lazy and fall a round behind in combat.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! I went back a few posts to make absolutely sure that I addressed everything in this post before clicking Submit...and I missed that Jack would need to also make a Fortitude save when he got adjacent to the monster. I'm going to put that save AFTER the save against the spell even though, following the GM's post, it should have come before. (And since, as a fellow GM, I prefer a set order to avoid the appearance of any shanaigans.) It's way too late for that in this post, though. Plus, the dice bot might very well give me another natural one. If the GM wants to make the first save the Fortitude save, I'll have no hard feelings.

So sorry to hear about this. I've been very fortunate and not lost anyone close to me from cancer, so I'm not going to speak on that part other than to wish you well on the difficult journey ahead. I CAN speak a bit on the importance of distraction as a coping mechanism, though.

The day before an important deadline at work, my mother suffered what turned out to be a fatal heart attack. After talking with my three siblings, I went to work the next day while they dealt with wake and funeral arrangements. We hit the work deadline and on the train ride home a lot of my stress melted away: I'd dealt with the thing I was able to control and now it was easier to deal with my mom's death.

The situations are different: I had a sudden shock while you have that plus a protracted period of trying times ahead. An engagement with a leisurely Pathfinder PbP might be a perfect sort of distraction in your case...or maybe it won't.

Your post proves you've got your priorities straight; it doesn't hurt to give continuing in the game a try. Best wishes.

I seriously need to stop saying "Thanks, Mirabella!" all the time. (That having been said...Thanks, Mirabella!)

Guilty as charged--I thought Jack's AC was 21 (not 22) and 18 while flat-footed. A simple glance at his stat line by me would've saved us this issue. I'll work on my game focus; it's been lacking.

Taking an easy 5-foot swim forward, Jack brings his weapons to bear against the spirit! Or at least tries to.... When his multiple attacks all feel off, the ranger is forced to question if maybe indeed Mirabella has hexed him.

But it makes no sense! She wouldn't have cast haste and inspired us if she had turned against us!

Looks like the old Jack is back...

Jack sheathes his short swords for the moment and then draws his two daggers, hoping they'll be more effective against the undead shark.

I believe that's all Jack can do this round. I don't want to just drop the short swords as I have no idea how far it is to the bottom.

Just a quick note: I forgot to add the bonus from Mirabella's Inspire Courage (Again!), not to mention her haste spell. I'll roll the bonus haste attack now and try to do a better job remembering going forward.

Well, possibly 2 more damage IF that hit and IF this is indeed a zombie.
