"Well I guess I'll hit the sack as well." Henk looks thoughtful, then adds. "I like Bram's Bravos for our unit name, but I'm sure someone can come up with something better. I plan to start my mech upgrade tomorrow unless the boss-man has other plans." He gives Bram an opportunity to give any orders that would prevent him from getting some sleep. If he hears none, he'll get a map and try to find their barracks.

Henk raises an eyebrow when he learns that their female team member is Sgt Davros' daughter. Things just got complicated. He keeps his eyes open and his mouth shut, listening to any conversations but just basically waiting for the sergeant to leave. Slammed busy right now - I'll level up soon.

A few things: It was my understanding that everyone in the virtual fight was on the same team. i.e. - our current NPC teammates were the NPCs we "killed" in the fight. Am I misunderstanding? If this is the case, hitting each other was pretty much the plan the whole time. We didn't role-play it but we eventually all fought each other, right? I'm not sure what to do about the Mech rules. It seems like the fights are going to take a long time since we can completely negate damage with ride checks. To be honest, I'm still not clear on how the whole mechanic works.

Henk looks around to the group and shrugs his shoulders. "Looks like show time." He does his best to look nonchalant as he walks up to the podium, nodding in acknowledgement to the men. He stops in front of the one female pilot, tipping his hat. "Ma'am." He raises an eyebrow in curiosity and gives her a lopsided smile. When Sgt. Davros hands over the insignia, Henk shakes his hand and does whatever else is appropriate (salute?). He says, "Thanks for the vote of confidence, sergeant, you won't regret it." What is our new rank, and how does it relate to Sgt. Davros? When they get back to the barracks, Henk says, "I never had much of a mind for pickin' names, but I reckon I vote for Bram as our leader, seein' as how he kicked all our asses in the fight."

So, to be clear: If one makes the Ride check, then the mech takes the damage instead of the PC. Right? Ride 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28 Henk begins to question his decision to engage another enemy. He swings at NPC-3 with his longsword again, maintaining his flanking position. Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 6 + 2 = 9

Henk decides to start off with a bang. He kicks the boosters in for his move action, increasing his speed to 50, and enabling him to move all the way to F-23. Once there, he swings at NPC-2 with his longsword.

Unfamiliar with automatic fire weapons, Henk sets the selector for single shot and squeezes off a quick three rounds at each target. I'm assuming that all the targets are within the weapon's short range. Target 1: (PBS) 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Target 2:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Target 3:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
He has no training with burst fire, but he lets off a few anyway, just for fun. Edit: Apparently, Henk is just as good at shooting as he is at swimming.

Looking Good! I'm not really a strong swimmer, Henk thinks to himself. Why did there have to be a lake?
Now in a ditch, Henk attempts to climb out.
I really hope I was able to take 10 on these. Otherwise I'm not doing too well. I was hoping that my infamous dice curse didn't extend to electronic dice. Evidently it does.

Just for future reference, you can usually take 10 on unthreatened skill checks. Is that also the case in a mech, or do we always have to roll? If we can take 10, I do so for the acrobatics checks. With a +8 bonus that would give me an 18 for both of those. I don't have swim skill, so I'll roll that one for sure; I'll also roll the acrobatics checks in case they're required. Henk runs along, an uncharacteristically goofy grin on his face. He's glad no one can see him - it'd ruin his image. He hits the wall in stride:
The swim is an awkward dog-paddle. Henk has stopped smiling.
Flopping out of the water dripping wet, Henk gets a good running start and hops into the air...

Henk allows himself a thin smile at the horseplay. At least the team has spirit. He adjusts his hat and replies to Kendall, "Can't say that I know the man." He watches the card game absently, wondering if the missing team member and the waiting game are part of the test. Missing the test isn't the best way to make mech pilot. Henk muses. This Rhune fella mustn't have much on the ball. He realizes that he doesn't really care if the man shows up or not, but he was getting a mite anxious waiting for this test to start up.

Henk looks at the folks in the room, wondering if they're going to be team-mates who'll have his back, or if they're actually his competition. The man is small in stature, with dark hair and eyes."Henk Smarne," he says as a terse introduction, tipping the front brim of his well-worn hat. Do we have all our gear right now, or are we just wearing our uniforms?

I can't post from work - sorry for the holdup. Henk looks over the list of his unfamiliar new teammates, then begins to walk slowly from the dining hall. If you don't pass the test they make you a mech pilot assistant? I didn't work this hard to become an assistant, that's for damn sure. Henk moves slowly through the crowd of cadets as he arrives at the hangar, trying to predict the one out of ten that would make it. There's one less now that I'm here, he decides. Let's do this.

I have a few questions: Are we using traits? If so, how many, and which are allowable? As a gunslinger, one of the nifty class features is that I start play with a firearm. Since everyone seems to have a firearm, I was hoping to get some other goody instead. Maybe a better pistol? Maybe a rifle? I'll leave it up to you to decide. Also as a gunslinger class feature, I am "proficient in all firearms". I presume that works the same as "Personal Firearms Proficiency". Let me know if there's some difference. You said we had max starting gold - is there a list of equipment available that's different from a standard fantasy campaign? Oh, and how are we doing HP? Max first level and roll for 2nd? |
