WOW - I am so very sorry, for both of you.
Breathe deep and make the space you need.

We lost my very very best friend's mother about 6 weeks ago; there is nothing that prepares you, even my very long life :(

"My friend's exuberance aside, let's step back a moment; the robbery has happened and it isn't like the trail will go cold, so that can wait. Your distress cannot. We are sorry to hear of your situation, but also probably compelled to ask; why are you keeping this so private? Your answer could be almost anything but as gently as I might remind you, death is death. It is noticible. So if your employer who would seem to also be your landlord, who to appearances is a person of good character, is about to lose a very talented employee, wouldn't you think he would want to know? Might he not intervene, he is a person of considerable means. Please understand, and you may have noticed, I come from a "Family" - we are all very very well trained to mind our own business in many things. This is not that, and I struggle to understand both your misfortune and your silence. Could we start there? Please?"

Guess the question is do any of her skills come into play? Feeling mechanically useless.

Let me tell you a secret that I learned in the theatre: the spotlight moves.

So while it may not be Astrid's moment right now right here in the living room of a mushroom, her time will come. Let's call a thing a thing too, she has magic missle. So when the time does come that everyone else is rolling to hit, she is going to simply CHOOSE who is damaged ... and that may very well save everyone's "arse"

Could any of that help see/notice some pattern?

Also, were all kinda on the same side PC/NPCs... so I'm thinking not a great time for Diplomacy (to Persuade +12). Am I right?

I think this is true of the PCs, and includes Rom's subversiveness; I do NOT think it is true of the NPCs (yet) and neither would any TV sleuth type character; the person most likely to have gotten away with this is an expert abjuror.

Romilen d’Lyrandar wrote:

Shaking his head sadly, Rom requests a writing implement and some parchment. He then jots down all the students names and then requests their locations for questioning later.

"Obviously that's a lot of people to know about a safe and what is in it Professor. That will make determining whom was responsible a lot harder. Sounds like the culprit was at least a wizard in training possibly. Any servants or ex-servants we should be aware of? Particularly ones that might have been removed from the premises by force or penchant for magic?

He then pauses and taps his lip with the pen.

"I'm still stymied: Why leave the geode? It must be just as valuable, if not more so, than the rest of the goods taken. Too many things to carry? Not as easy to fence?"

Rom shrugs.

"Too many variables still. Maybe we can narrow this down a bit?"

Carefully, Rom shows the broken piece of glass and the signet ring he found downstairs 'near-ish' the platform elevator.

"Would either of you be able to identify these items I found downstairs? Could the glass be from a window up here? Or is the signet recognizable as belonging to someone you know? One of the students possibly?"

" ... and although the esteemed Captain continued in his train of thought, please do circle back to answer his initial question: why leave the Khyber geode. I can only surmise that you know or could venture an extremely astute guess, but it is highly unlikely the answer is "their hands must have been full."

Hoping that none of the assembled had seen the extremely thin copper wire wrapped around his wrist ... or could see it disappear ... Gaelyn points directly at Romilen.

"Right on track this one! Always knows what's next!"

After which he seems to have a coughing fit rather suddenly:"This one is all you my friend. FYI, the professor doesn't just teach Abjuration, he and the misses reek of it. We won't be divining anything about them any time soon."

Cast: Message

Yeah, the issue was delivery more than content.

First part of the info, ALL good: "It's locked by both magic and a combination lock. The door is closed, ..."

Second part, I gotta be honest (and I can live with the idea of presumed discussion even in the absence of it happening) totally invalidates the need for a bunch of magical skills and/or detect magic and/or magic using classes.

So while I don't take issue, totally, with the super magically knowledgeable rogue concept, I take a little issue with it not being documented at all in any way, and a little more with Elton just kind of dumping it all out there and making the magically focused characters irrelevant. He & I have discussed it just so everyone knows.

Driving the story ... #AWESOME

and yet in that 90 seconds, Gaelyn quietly fires up a Detect Magic and surepticiously scan the lady of the house while pretending to offer that she sit down; as he turns from her, in the 61st second, he fires up D-Mag again because it only lasts a minute ... just in time to scan the other suspect

Frowning, Rom points at the Geode.

”It all sounds valuable. Why leave the geode-egg whatever. It seems more valuable to me.. We’re any of the items taken magically enchanted?”

What kind of safe is it? Combination/clockwork style or is it magically sealed normally? Any alarms bells on it?

** spoiler omitted **

"Maybe they didn't know it's value," said Samantha.

Just as a super quick Point of Order, um, how would Rom know what's spoilered for him? I'm getting a little confused by the flow. Gaelyn had said he wanted to be next up the lift, but it seems like that didn't happen. The arrival description seemed to indicate that the door to the safe was open also. Really just want to get what's up. Happy to have Gaelyn cast Detect Magic too, or roll Arcana. But the reality is, if the Hold Portal spell we don't know about is intact, and the door the safe is open, then she stole everything, the husband stole everything, or someone used hella magic to impersonate one of them magically. In which case the geode was left behind because the thief knows it's dangerous.

"I know you've naturally already dispatched word to your husband ... he's nearby?"

"This is awesome, I totally want to go next!"

EltonJ wrote:

It takes you five minutes to get to Samantha's house. Which is made up of mushrooms. Five mushrooms around a central mushroom. The mushroom in the middle being a whopping three stories tall with a huge cap.

"We live in the mushroom," says Samantha. "There is a magic platform you step on, and you will be levitated to the living area."

Life was life, and had this habit of conforming to itself; in Arcanix, it was difficult to use the phrase "you just can't make this $h*t up" and yet, life conformed to itself. All he had wanted this morning was breakfast and a drink ... so now he would levitate into a mushroom.

Toast was easy to come by; mushroom homes, well, less so.

Or you can research a simple 1st level spell!

ah - I think I probably thought since it isn't an arcane spell that wouldn't be possible

I can help. The masked elf, having not waited for food, gets up and says these words in a low but confident voice. How do I... How do we identify the villains and your belongings? He takes a quick look at Romilen and Gaelyn.

Gaelyn turns to the elf who had spoken, and nods apologetically.

"Please, do pardon my distraction, I didn't realize my firend's condition would improve so quickly ... I am Gaelyn d'Orien."
ELVEN:
"I hope you will forgive me, but this is Arcanix after all; is it a touch of the divine that I sense with you?"

Going all the way for a scam, huh Romilen?

A gentleman thief hiding under the banner of a Great House ... can NOT go wrong with that!

”What? Are you going to teleport milk into your coffee or just the cow to the inn? What’s that saying? ‘Gotta have it fresh? Then it’s gotta be ORIEN FRESH!”

"Truth be told, we're in Arcanix ... I was just going to cast a spell. We do that a lot here. But I gotta call open license on the slogan the RomCom, that was brilliant. Like I'll give you verbal credit and maybe buy you a Lightning Rail pass or something. Seriously, I think even my grandfather would laugh."

Gaelyn and Romilen
A pretty barmaid approaches you. "May I take your orders?" she asks.

"I totally want coffee, and really would like a little iltrayan too. Toast & Jam I think; just not sure today is saying "waffle" to me. Toast, Jam, some cheese, that would be great."

Gaelyn smiles with actual empathy ...

"What can we get you Captain? A few sips of iltrayan really could help set you right."

Buckling on his sturdy rapier, Rom finally feels normal enough (and armed enough) to deal with normal people. Running a hand through his hair he plasters a smile on his face, steps out of his room, and down the inn’s stairs.

Glancing around, he fights off the little bit of vertigo he gets from maneuvering down the stairs too fast, and ‘casually’ makes his way past a halfling and his waiter discussing coffee orders of some sort.

Once steady in his seat, he closes his eyes for a moment then opens them to wave at a pretty barmaid across room who seemed less busy at the moment.

and just as Romilen turns back to the table, BAM!, the handsome scion of House Orien appears ... appears, seated, directly across from him ... appears with the sparkle of his dragonmark fading in the palm of his left hand

"Well met Lyrandar! Good to see you again. I'd say something about what the cat dragged in, but I'm not sure the cat would have done that. You might need need coffee, you might need iltrayan, or you might need both. Both and more sleep maybe?"

Gaelyn smiles broadly, which pushes his ear tips out beyond his hair

"Maybe food too. You had a LOT of fun last night!"

Not overly optimized, but focused on flavor.

She's highly intelligent and attractive, but perhaps a bit cold unless specifically out to "handle people" in a sense. She turns on the charm, learned not innate.

Stationed at the Starpeaks Observatory, she's often looking up at the night sky, seeking answers. Knowledges reflect personal interest and job (liaison) requirements.

Since the Last War, she's been concerned, contemplating what... out there could have caused this? Perhaps she's just returned home from an assignment... or caught an earlier train.

Good job on putting together this character. Oh, I'm discussing plans with our fifth player.

Gaelyn Flexxt

Ancient Half-Elf
Champion of Yuelral
(Sorcerer)

Build Notes:

Gaelyn is meant to emulate the Paladin Mind Sword Archetype from PF1. His telekinetic abiities are the cornerstone of his heroic ideal. Yes, the choice to have these abilities at 1st level and to waste the 2nd Level Free Archetype slot is intentional. As is having him live with the reduced CON for a few levels; he is def meant to be a ranged combatant given that TKP allows him to hurl a dagger much further than its base range increment as a thrown weapon.

In many ways, his look is probably more like the Iconic Rogue, Merisiel, given that he has 6 daggers sheathed on his right leg; non-elves rarely know that the dagger is the sacred weapon of Yuelral.

Backstory:
Mendev beckoned. He wasn’t Rogarvian enough to be relevant in Brevoy, and he certainly wasn’t elven enough to be relevant in Iadara … yet in her beneficence, Yuelral had graced him, and he knew he could help the crusade and specifically, bring hope to elven crusaders. The great mage Nathan Rogarvia was gone, and while divination fairly clearly showed the mage was one of Gaelyn’s forebears, not much else did. In Mendev, none of that had mattered. He attacked, he healed, he prayed, he repeated. It was bliss.

Now though, the Worldwound closed, he meandered back across the southern shore of the Lake, not much interested in Numeria, back to Restov. There weren’t all that many Mind Swords who had exited the crusade alive, and there weren’t any Rogarvians to be heard from either. Gaelyn himself may not have been young for an aiuvarin anymore, but his flame for Yuelral burned as brightly as ever. He didn’t need to be a scion of kings, he needed to love The Wise and show her gratitude for his magic. The Stolen Lands needed that: he would be a Scion of Gratitude, sharing the blessings of her magic whenever he could.

Hopefully this is enough of Gaelyn to get into things. I really like him. He was SO proud of himself for finally activating his Force Field; he went to go show off, but then suddenly no one knew where Khonnir could be found, not even Gaelyn's "sister" Val ...

Biokinetic Healing (Su) When cast linked spell from trans school, spend 1 phrenic pool to regain 2hp/spell level.

Force Field (Su) (Occult Realms pg. 12): As a swift action, you can spend 1 point from your phrenic pool to activate a force field of raw psychic energy that provides you with a number of temporary hit points equal to 5 + your psychic level (maximum 10 temporary hit points). If you spend 2 points from your phrenic pool, the force field provides a number of temporary hit points equal to 10 + your psychic level (maximum 20 temporary hit points). The force field lasts for a number of minutes equal to your psychic level. If you spend 3 points from your phrenic pool, the force field lasts for twice as long, and it provides fast healing 2. Once the temporary hit points are depleted, the force field disappears and you cannot reinstate it for 24 hours. You must be at least 3rd level to select this discovery.
Elf Blood Half-elves count as both elves and humans for any effect related to race.
Mindtech – (Source Occult Realms pg. 13) - Phrenic Pool Ability: Wisdom
You are innately tied to and can communicate with electronic machinery and similar technological objects, through which you can funnel your psychic power like flowing water. You can amplify and focus your psychic energies using the technology that surrounds you— even certain kinds of technology that might not be obvious to others.
Bonus Spells: technomancy (1st), protection from technology (4th), irradiate (6th), malfunction (8th), lightning arc (10th), destroy robot (12th), memory of function (14th), prismatic wall (16th), time stop (18th).

Discipline Powers: Your powers relate to uniting technology with psychic energy.
Synergized Energy (Su): Whenever you use a battery (Technology Guide 39), a generator (Technology Guide 62), or the ability described in the psychic battery psi-tech discovery (see above) to restore charges to any piece of technological equipment, you regain 1 point in your phrenic pool. The maximum number of points you can regain in your phrenic pool in this way per day is equal to your Wisdom modifier.

Low-Light Vision See twice as far as a human in dim light, distinguishing color and detail.
Patient Insight (Ex) When making Heal, Knowledge, Sense Motive or Survival chk, spend 1 phrenic pool, roll 2x take higher.
Perfect +1 to bluff and diplomacy vs. humanoids and +2 vs. transmutation spells.
Phrenic Pool (6/day) (Su) Pool of points you can use to modify psychic spells as they're cast.
Secret Shame -1 to save vs. fear effects and to DC to demoralize you. If immune to fear, lose imm but no penalties.
