I would volunteer to *finish* a game but I can't start a gameday game. It looks like none of those are even started yet.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Ninnic, I didn't have a day job for you earlier so I didn't finalize your chonicle sheet then. It should be there now. I did it from my phone so it looks a little different. Let me know if it's alright.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

I'll update your chronicle and make sure you get it when I can get to a computer in the next few days, Ninnic. I may even try to take care of it at work tomorrow.

Kreighton Shaine nods solemnly along at your summary, his mind apparently still absorbing the news of Janira's death. "Being a Pathfinder is dangerous work." He says, but the ghost of a smile appears on his face as he says "You have done well; Janira clearly taught you well. I will watch for your careers in the Chronicles."

With that, you are dismissed. Within a few days, the Master of your order (Scrolls, Shields, or Swords, as appropriate to your Pathfinder training) presents you with a wayfinder bearing your name.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

I initially forgot to remove the "Friend of Janira Gavix" boon from the sheet. Should be updated now. Unfortunately it is hard for the dead to be much use in the library of the Grand Lodge. :(

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Chronicles are here. Let me know if you see any issues.

I never requested nor was given control of this campaign, so I can't shut it down. Once you all have your chronicles, I can try to request someone with Powers mark the campaign inactive. It doesn't bother me, though; I track my games via RSS and almost never look at the Campaign Tab anymore.

Did you end up using that folio reroll, Ninnic?

OSP linky

So I used the form to report my game and I got the email. But now I realize that it's not clear to me what to put in the Event and Event Code parts of the Chronicle Sheet. I would guess "OSP 2019/2020" for the former since that's what's in the email, but the "Session Id" in the 600s seems way too low for an Event Code. Any help here?

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

I reported the game but did not get back to a computer to type up Chronicles. Should be able to do that tonight, where I will make another gameplay post as well.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

He did a (mostly) open recruitment. I remember because the only reason I wasn't a player was because I wanted to bring a level 2 character. It seems I should use OSP reporting.

When I GMed Starfinder for my local game shop, the GM gave me a boon with boxes to check for every regional game I GM. Is there something similar for PFS1?

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

The party makes their way back to the Grand Lodge in Absalom, where they are greeted by Kreighton Shaine. His excitement about your findings is dampened by the news of Janira's death and the sight of her body. "This won't do." He says sadly. "We'll see to it that she is taken care of properly. She was one of my most promising students..." He breathes in and back out again. After hearing how she died, he nods slowly. "She behaved as she believed a Pathfinder should; she is an inspiration to all of us."

I probably should have given you all the chance to relay that; please feel free to do so before answering the below; I just wanted to write his response while it was on my mind.

It is an unusually subdued Kreighton Shaine that asks about what you found in the caves.

As you get close to Janira you quickly realize she is past the point of being helped by potions, wands, or other forms of healing.

the first hit took her to -10. She failed both her stabilize checks and only has 12 con. I'm honestly surprised this Minotaur doesn't take people out more often than I've seen in my dozen or so plays of this scenario

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Despite the poor lighting Imrahil deals the Minotaur a grievous blow. As it feels in pain, Reckum strikes it in the chest with a sickening CRACK-SQUISH and it falls to the ground unconscious.

Khari lies against a tree, stable, as her friends will discover soon enough.

Janira lies a few feet away, unmoving and bleeding profusely..

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

1 is a miss for Imrahil: 1d5 ⇒ 2

The minotaur strikes Imrahil with his axe. He strikes again and then tries to gore Reckum, but both attacks miss.

GM screen:

Minotaur, attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
slashing: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 1) + 4 = 11

Minotaur, attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
slashing: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 6) + 4 = 15

gore, attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
piercing: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The Minotaur will fall unconscious with 25 more points of damage or flee with 15 more

ah ha! We're waiting on me. I should have a post up later tonight or anytime tomorrow.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Zu will be fine as long as he is within 60 feet of the Minotaur. Or as long as there is a light source near the Minotaur.

It's funny to me that the description for daekvision only talks about seeing in pitch blackness, and the description for low-light vision talks about seeing on a moonlit night, but the text for lighting and concealment calls out darkvision as being enough to see in dim light (i.e. a moonlit night) and merely says that low light vision extends the effective range of lighting sources.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

no. In Pathfinder 1, low light vision doubles the effective range of lighting. So a torch that gives normal light for the first 20 feet and dim light for the next 20 gives a low light vision character 40 feet of normal light and 40 feet of dim light. It is interesting that low light vision characters can read a scroll and "can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can during the day" but still take the 20% miss chance.

Lighting and concealment rules:
In an area of bright light, all characters can see clearly. Some creatures, such as those with light sensitivity and light blindness, take penalties while in areas of bright light. A creature can't use Stealth in an area of bright light unless it is invisible or has cover. Areas of bright light include outside in direct sunshine and inside the area of a daylight spell.

Normal light functions just like bright light, but characters with light sensitivity and light blindness do not take penalties. Areas of normal light include underneath a forest canopy during the day, within 20 feet of a torch, and inside the area of a light spell.

In an area of dim light, a character can see somewhat. Creatures within this area have concealment (20% miss chance in combat) from those without darkvision or the ability to see in darkness. A creature within an area of dim light can make a Stealth check to conceal itself. Areas of dim light include outside at night with a moon in the sky, bright starlight, and the area between 20 and 40 feet from a torch.

In areas of darkness, creatures without darkvision are effectively blinded. In addition to the obvious effects, a blinded creature has a 50% miss chance in combat (all opponents have total concealment), loses any Dexterity bonus to AC, takes a –2 penalty to AC, and takes a –4 penalty on Perception checks that rely on sight and most Strength- and Dexterity-based skill checks. Areas of darkness include an unlit dungeon chamber, most caverns, and outside on a cloudy, moonless night.

Characters with low-light vision (elves, gnomes, and half-elves) can see objects twice as far away as the given radius. Double the effective radius of bright light, normal light, and dim light for such characters.

Characters with darkvision (dwarves and half-orcs) can see lit areas normally as well as dark areas within 60 feet. A creature can't hide within 60 feet of a character with darkvision unless it is invisible or has cover.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

don't forget, because of the dim lighting, if you do not have a source of normal light nearby the Minotaur increasing the light level, then there is a 20% miss chance on all attacks. If you have darkvision you can ignore this

The minotaur shouts

Ninnic, I moved you.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Another note, you were in the caves long enough that the outdoors are now moonlit. This is considered dim light. Additionally, the trees have enough underbrush under them that they create difficult terrain, and they are just big enough to offer concealment and partial cover. Keep that in mind for ranged attacks.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

I've got a lot to catch up on but I'm going to try to get you all moving now.

Marching Order:
as I could gather from your posts

Reckum
Imrahil
Khari
Folwin
Ninnic
Zu + Fuzzy

As you emerge from the cave the light of the surface world above provides a welcome reprieve from the blue and green fungus of the caverns below, and light illuminates a stream whose water is hastened by runoff from a recent storm further up the mountains. A ledge to the west rises up to the nearby forest canopy. Below you, on the other side of the steam, you can see the minotaur and Janira Gavix locked in battle.

You vile beast! I know not what drives your black heart, but I shall not fail in my duty. I shall see you driven from this forest, back to the hills from whence you came!

Janira steps away from the Minotaur. With a crack, she strikes at his battle-axe with her whip! Her whip glances off of the hilt of the Minotaur.

Initiative:

Janira: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Minotaur: 1d20 ⇒ 7

Khari: 1d20 ⇒ 8
Reckum Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Ninnic Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Zu Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Imrahil Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Folwin Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Initiative
Janira
Reckum <= Up
Imrahil <= Up
Zu + Fuzzy <= Up
Ninnic <= Up
Khari <= Up
Minotaur
Folwin

GM screen:

Janira, whip, disarm, inspired: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 + 1 = 12

The minotaur bellows and steps towards Janira and strikes at her with his axe. Twice! Then he lowers his head and drives his horns at her.
Minotaur, attack, power attack: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 7 - 2 = 17
slashing: 2d6 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (5, 3) + 4 + 6 = 18

Minotaur, attack, power attack: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 - 2 = 13
slashing: 2d6 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 4 + 6 = 14

gore, attack, power attack: 1d20 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 4 - 2 = 6
piercing: 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 + 2 = 8

Janira is 15' away from the minotaur. She is fatigued and only has two rounds of inspiration remaining. She does have lingering performance

The Minotaur has taken 7 damage and his battle-axe is broken (already accounted here and in the PDF)

Whoever GMs will need this: can you all please ensure that your status on the last visible slide is correct?

I have the PDF on my phone and tablet so I can refresh on the details of the encounter. Would like to know something decisive before investing more time. Coin toss, first come first served, previous games GMed; I don't care what criteria, just someone tell me who's going to do it.

If it's me I'll try to get an initiative block posted today or tomorrow.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

It's the least I could do; almost every player in that game has GMed a game for me before, and I have been on the other end of these GM searches plenty of times.

Procedural Question:
So far it looks like the players are on board with me finishing it. Assuming that remains the case, should I add the original GM as a 7th player since he ran the great majority of the scenario?

I assume that GMing the last encounter does not earn me credit for one of my own characters.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

I will take no offense if you would rather choose another GM.

However, I will point out that Choptop has already done all the hard parts prep-wise (I peeked at the slides and they have everything I need), and I have played this encounter maybe a dozen times. I actually expect to be able to start posting by tonight or tomorrow. I just refuse to make any guarantees until post-GenCon.

Not sure if you would be interested in anyone else joining in on 1-05, but I would love to play through. I don't have a character fully built out yet, but that is a mere formality.

If I run the table, it will be late July or shortly after GenCon before I start. But you will have a spot if I do.

Bumping this up before it is forgotten in all the Skitter Crash excitement.

GM Socrates, 1-05 has been run quite a bit in this PBP lodge. I think this game is only likely to make it if people are playing a character with a first tier of Second Seekers (Jadnura) or if we're lucky and get several new players at once.

You might want to try recruiting for it in the public recruitment forum as well if you really wish this game to take off. I think that 1-05 (and 1-08) have been run so often at Castamirs that it will be hard to get players for them.

(Now here is where I'm hoping that everyone proves me wrong.)

Hmm

Good point. I will look into making an interest-check/recruting thread later.

Why does hiding the DCs behind a spoiler not prevent it? Do your players cheat and open spoilers before they're supposed to?

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Taking 10 is where it came up in one of my games recently.

But it could also lead to players spending boons, potions, scrolls, spells, class features, etc. So that they can beat a DC OR they may NOT spend any of those things (when they would f2f) because they already know they'll beat the DC.

I say all this as someone who has been playing php for about 4 years now, along with some occasional f2f. My only pbp GM experience was a few tables last year. So this is pretty much all player perspective. I'm just using my GM alias because it's a GM topic.

GM supervillan wrote:

I disagree.

Putting the DC somewhere in your post speeds play, yes. But there's nothing faster about showing the players the DC up front instead of putting it in a spoiler for them to see after they've made their check.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

Yes, I know that's the standard, GM Supervillain, but that gives the players the DCs up front and can lead to metagaming; even subconscious metagaming. What I posted seems more similar to what you would experience in a f2f game where you don't usually know the DCs.

Your trick seems nicer than mine, Grandmaster Toz. I was wondering what the secret sauce was to make nested spoilers work.

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

In my very short stint as a pbp GM last year I tried an alternate way of handling spoilers for my players. It was something like this

Make a knowledge, religion or knowledge, planes check:
If you beat DC22 open secret 1 and secret 2. If you only beat DC17 open secret 1

Secret 1:
It's a secret

Secret 2:
it's another secret

There's probably a more efficient way to word the first spoiler, Like "Secret 1=DC17; Secret 2=DC22."
I've always been puzzled that GMs don't do it that way, as it offers the best of both worlds.

So now I'm wondering, is this a thing the PbP community has considered and rejected for some reasons or is it just a new idea?

Choptop's Confirmation Map | Posts unlikely on 1st + 2nd Thursday each month and Tuesday + Thursday mornings

I had a PC pick up a goblin corpse for Telekinetic Projectile the other day. I didn't change the damage or anything, but it was a fun idea.

It's probably not legal by RAW (there's a weight limit, isn't there?) but there was other stuff she could have used instead and the goblin's body served no other purpose, so the net effect was the same as using anything else.

I made a post for a new GM here

Earlier this year I started GMing on the boards. I was enjoying it a lot and excited to finally be giving back. And I bit off more than I could chew. Not only did I burn myself out, but my life changed enough that I don't think I can keep GMing PbP at all right now.

One of my tables fizzled out, another was one where I was just one of many player/GMs, but a third table has a great group of consistent posters that are also new to Pathfinder and new to PbP RPing. I would really like to find a new GM for that table. It is here. They are partway through The Confirmation and I had plans to maintain an ongoing campaign for them. I would love it if another GM were interested in running multiple subsequent scenarios for them, evergreen or not. I think I could keep up as a player in the group, but in the circumstances I understand if that is distasteful.

Please send me a PM if you are willing to take up GMing for this group, even if just to the end of the current scenario.
