Ok well my primary goal is to gauge their numbers and strengths, then. I will try to sabotage them only if my cover remains intact and the opportunity presents itself.

Inspiration strikes and Fletch hands his circlet to Cole, Here set this back on my head after I change. I might be able to assume a less conspicious form...

Fletch concentrates, his blood accelerating carrying the catalytic enzymes to every part of his body, compressing and contorting his form until all that remains is...a tiny sized bat.

I cannot drink extracts in Bat Form. More specifically, my gear becomes part of my new form, extracts included. Which makes this something of a logistics nightmare. Perhaps the original plan: Fly low to water using Stealth vs. their Perception and if they see me, they still have to make the appropriate check to see through my disguise (Bat Form gives me a nice disguise bonus to appear to be y'know a bat).

Holy Cow, Bat-Man! Could one of you put the circlet of disguise on me in bat form? To make me appear to be a seagull? (Obviously the bat form disguise bonus and the Circlet's disguise bonus do NOT stack. I just think being a seagull is much more appropriate disguise in this situation).

I speak quietly to Cole and the rest of the group, I have an idea...

I think I can get close enough to the patrol ship relatively unseen. Once there I can take a look at what we are dealing with and potentially sabotage their rudder. I would appreciate any beneficial spells in my attempt. If my cover is broken I should be able to dive back into the water.

Cole, I assume you can rally the Frosthamar's defenses in case this does turn into a confrontation?

Kana/Wade, are there any beneficial spells you might be able to give me to maybe help with Stealth, Disguise, Water Breathing, or an increase to damage? I'm going to attempt to bite through their steering rope but i'll be pretty much out of range the whole time.

Of course, if this works, we may not have to confront them at all...

@DM: You said the boat was ten minutes behind us. My extracts only last three minutes currently. I think I want to wait until they are close enough that it would only take a minute for me to fly/swim there (accounting for the fact that they are closing on us and we are moving away from them). Is that acceptable or does that put them too close to us (within grappling hook range)? I have a 40 ft fly speed(Bat Form) and a 30 ft swim speed (with the extract).

I have an Extract of Touch of the Sea actually. And as it turns out...not proficient with a longsword. So I will stick with my Bite Attack I keep forgetting about.

Drinking Shield also seems like a good idea.

I like the idea, but my bite attack is only 1d3-3 in that form. Also I am size tiny which means one of my alchemist fires is apparently the same size as I am (weapons sized for a medium creature are 2 size categories smaller usually) although one bomb might be considered Size Diminutive.

Regardless, a bat flying in the afternoon carrying a small vial of red liquid is totally legit. /sarcasm

Now me drinking my swim speed potion, flying to their rudder in bat form low to the water with a Stealth and Disguise check to protect me then un-morphing and using a sword to cut their rudder's lines from underwater...possibly doable. Anyone got a sword I can borrow?

At minimum, I think I can scout out their defenses and give us an idea of what we are dealing with. If things get rough I'll dive into the water (swim speed works will still work in Bat Form).

Actually I suppose I shall just swim the whole way there to avoid the Perception checks completely...at least until I have to show myself near their boat.

Ok is this a good time to go scout in Bat Form?? Not sure how much attention a bat would elicit since it isn't exactly dark yet but a tiny sized creature is hardly threatening...

Fletch was content shadowing the various sailors as they went about their duties, scribbling hasty notes in his journal. After Day 2, he began to get bored of the repetitious actions and started some "experiments" of his own. Mostly harmless ones of course. Untie a knot here, hide a broom in the boatswain's quarters there and see how quickly the swab or rigger responsible was chastised.

Brutally efficient, the officers of the Frosthamar keep their subordinates in line through a series of escalating threats and punishments designed primarily to demoralize the offender. Excellent.

It is a pity we will not get to stay any longer. I would dearly love to see this punishment known as "walking the plank". Why treading upon a weathered length of processed wood would inspire such fear into the men is beyond my current knowledge. Perhaps their feet are removed beforehand? Or perhaps they are beaten with said plank and "walking" is simply a metaphor?

A footnote scribbled at the bottom of the latest entry reads...
Further study shall be given to discovering why the highest point of the ship is called the "crow's nest' when no known creature of the Corvus Corvidae family resides anywhere near the ship.

I am using Hero Lab so I just took the Drow Sign Language one although it is technically Asmodeus Sign Language I think(same initials as American Sign language!).

Ok so we can't leave Jack with the Cardinal nor can we take him on the boat (supposedly). As much as I want to stick it to Captain Kirk, he does make a good point. Jack would be easily spotted unless he remained belowdecks and even then, an inspection of our cargo would likely reveal him. Do we have any special mojo for hiding him?

With a high Diplomacy, Intimidate, or Bluff we might be able to convince the captain to let Jack on board but we should have a plan in place if we do get boarded by inspectors. Kana, I don't know what spells you took this level but can you cast invisibility/alter self/reduce person on him?

Worst case, we have to let him go into the wild. :(

I hope it doesn't come to that.

EDIT: Cole, unless I'm mistaken doesn't the circlet disguise you as your same size category? He'd be short for a Large sized creature for sure but still recognizable as Large...

Sorry the second half of my previous post was aimed at the animal companion not the hellcat cohort. Hellcat cohort is ok for gaining class levels and of your choice (although I think warlock is 3.5e D&D. Would require DM permission and some conversion). Hellcat that takes the hellfire warlock prestige class (also 3.5e) would be rather appropriate as well.

Oh as a cohort. Cool.

Interesting loophole. You could only ever get it to INT 4 but around INT 3 (level 9) it can start selecting feats as if it was a normal person. I agree adding class levels to a class feature (animal companion) doesn't seem to be in the books (and is rather unbalancing gameplay-wise to boot) but I do love the thought of a Cat that can shapeshift into other animals.

Well they are Sorceror/Wizard spells so I guess we are both right? and true, but animal companions "can't" be intelligent. Same reason it's a bad idea to use Awaken on one. They might follow you but they stop becoming a class feature and become a full-fledged NPC (by most readings of how that works anyways). A cohort potentially but no longer an animal companion.

Is there something specifically that let's you take a hellcat (a sentient creature) as an animal companion?

I still love the flavor of it being a sentient druid stuck in cat form or somesuch. Same mechanical flavor but it just adds that dash of roleplay fluff...we are evil after all.

All she needs do for shapechanging is to take any of the Beast Shape/Undead Form/Monstrous Physique/Dragon Form and using Share Spells cast them on her tiger instead. Poof, she has a shapechanging obedient monster of just about any type. Animal Companion + Wizard spells are awesome.

I now have the intense desire to have stoneskin cast on Grumblejack then launch him as living ammunition from a catapult. Trolls and Earth Elementals would make good "ammo" as well I think...

I approve of the efficiency of your plan, Father Wade, but do smuggling ships carry that kind of weaponry? Arkenstar is many leagues removed from Talingarde. It would seem more likely they would carry small mounted ballistae or perhaps a catapult on the foredeck rather than cannons. That aside, if you have a method by which we might quickly slay their entire crew and then remove said siege weapons (whatever they might be) I am all for further indebting those northern brutes.

Fletch runs through the paces of his training half-heartedly, always wishing he was back in his lab experimenting with his shiny new toys. This earns him repeated reprimands when his focus wavers.

His first (and only) time with Tiadora was right after he set a harmless little fire in the library. How was he supposed to know that mixture of chemicals wouldn't prolong the shrubbery's life (and reduce it's need for watering)?

He was able to eek away enough time to create a new experimental form of his "mojo" juice as well as a new serum that should enhance his shapeshifting ability. He was anxious to try it out.

Mutagen Prepared: +4 DEX, -2 WIS, +2 Nat. Armor, Darkvision 60 ft.

What do you think about dropping the first part of the stat change ("take the best of both") for some other benefit. I will not refuse a +13 to STR and a +12 to WIS scores as per the template but that seems maybe a bit much on top of the +4 to everything else. A buff to fly speed (60 ft vs. 40 ft) or the ability to summon/retain some amount of bat minions would be interesting alternative ideas.

@DM: Sent you a PM with an idea I had for a template for Fletch.

Vampires get a lot of cool things, the stat buffs are usually the best of the bunch. I'd say that is half the draw of that template. Without it, they get some very useful abilities and defense still but the drawbacks are that much more sucky and the feat expenditure seems rather bad too. The template I PMed you also would not be worth taking without the stat boosts it gives.

Is a 5 feat investment (that's half your normal allotment over the course of 20 levels!) worth a vampire with no stat boosts? Not sure but I'm leaning towards no.

Yea the vampire template is kind of what makes me really anxious to find a cool equivalent. Those are some really major stat boosts. If i didn't take a template I would feel gimped in comparison to others that did...

And I take it Alchemist Formulae don't count? I thought it fit so well for an alchemist (creating a phylactery and preserving my body with preservatives over time) that I didn't look too closely at the requirements.

@DM R: Is Lich ok for an Alchemist? I am not dead set on being one but I wouldn't know what to be if not a lich. Vamp requires something like 5 feats right?

Formula Alembic lets me add valid potions to my Formulae Book without using them up.
Hybridization Funnel will let me combine two mundane alchemical splash weapons (Craft(alchemy) DC 25) into a single 24 duration splash weapon (after which they go inert).

I simply don't have room after the ranged attack feat tax.
AS an alchemist I would like to go the Lich route as default. Keeping my eye open on other undead/evil templates that might fit me better.

OK I found the psot that said HP increase is Half +1.
As half of a 1d8 is 4.5, does my hp increases by level look something like this?

3) +6

4) +5
5) +6

and so on?

I will third that idea. I will try to swing a skill point in that direction as well.

I believe I will still be taking Bat Shape over Precise Shot this level just for the sheer roleplay and utility value.

Shaking off the cobwebs, he is sure to thank his "host". I appreciate your effort in repairing my physical form, Cardinal. I am not so certain about the "soul returning" bit but this should make for a delightful edition to my ongoing experimental notes.

Turning to Wade, On a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your death experience? Be honest now, this is for posterity. Did you see or think you saw entities of a higher plane of existence? Did you see color? Perhaps flying pasta dishes?

Fletch eats the food placed in front of him with mechanical precision between rapidly fired questions.

Cole, I do wish to hear your experience being near death as well but I did have another favor to ask. I have never been too...martially minded shall we say and our excursion down into the crypts illuminated my obvious need for adequate protection from bodily harm. Would you be able to help me choose some armor that wouldn't hamper my movements too much? I can pay for the piece obviously but I have never needed such a thing before.

I would like to buy MSW Studded Leather (175 gp), a Hybridization Funnel (200 gp), a Formula Alembic (200 gp), and 8 Liquid Ice (320 gp).
Let me know if I have the time/ability to take 20 on Craft(Alchemy) to make those Liquid Ice myself. My bonus is only a +12 atm so Taking 10 won't cut it.

@DM: Can I get a rough idea of what you mean by unknown forces? I am not asking what they are but how they would affect my character. It is sounding like the price for us to be raised from the dead is some sort of Faustion Contract wherein by rezzing from the dead I would either be a slave to some unknown force or pay some other equally horrible price later on in the campaign.

I have had a similar situation in a different campaign (different game system even) that was kind of a nightmare for me which is why I was hoping for an idea (out of character) of what price I would be expected to pay for this rez(if any). I sorely do wish to keep Fletch around but if it too greatly impacts his freedom/choices I'd rather opt for a new character.

The previous nightmare experience involved my character being completely stripped of all standing in front of the entire community (drained of blood and tortured until I cried blood) and forever becoming a minion of one of the more sadistic vampires in the region. Not only was it my first time playing the system (Vampire the Masquerade), the only reason I was killed (and my rez required the above "payment") was a combination of not realizing how important NOT frenzying is and failing three separate rolls to feed before the dinner party. (The mental picture of me running to the blood-filled punch bowl and dumping it over my head was rather amusing though.)

You shouldn't have done that. Villain Point spent to either force a re-roll on Balin (preferred) or to bring Wade to -1 hp and stable.

I attempt to time my next bomb throw so that it hits him in the eyes. I am attempting a Called Shot to the eye as per the Called Shot rules. If we are not using Called Shot rules (they are an optional rules subset) then please add 10 to my attack roll and treat like a normal attack.

My first action will be to Change Shape and then move to the northeast corner of the room. I do not wish to provoke any attacks of opportunity so I wont move if Balin is too close that I would provoke. If for some reason Balin gets within melee distance of me I will 5 ft step away.
