A Toughie

3/5

Played this tonight. Four characters of levels 10-11 (Cavalier, Fighter/Cleric, Fighter and Gunslinger).

I don't really know how I feel about this scenario. We had fun to be sure but it was perhaps a tad too tough even for the levels we were playing. Here are my thoughts and there are spoils involved.

Firstly, this is a combat scenario from start to finish. Roleplay is at a minimum. It sets itself up as being an investigation and it isn't. Two roleplay moments and the wall to wall combat.

Second thing that really bugged me, especially playing the big strong fighter type was how often I was screwed over by strength damage effects. It pretty much made my character pointless throughout the scenario. Once, sure. Twice was getting annoying and by the time we beat the BBEG I was in negative modifiers. It got on my nerves putting it politely.

The middle encounter would have killed us if the Gunslinger had not had the right alchemical gear. A little overkill if you ask me.

Even with those in mind we had fun but the scenario needed just a little tweaking. Then it would have been better.

Excellent Roleplay Scenario

4/5

Played this scenario this evening. Party was rogue 1 / ranger 1, thassilonian wizard 1, druid 2, gunslinger 2, gunslinger 1, and a sorcerer 1 / oracle 1.

This is a scenario perfectly balanced between role play and combat. Everyone had a great time. It is the sort of scenario style I would like to see more of in PFS even through to the more challenging levels. I would like to see more from this author.

The only thing that stopped me giving 5 stars was that it was stillt very bouncy from one set of clues to another. A straight progression would have been better.

Disappointing

2/5

Played this at low tier.

To start with it is a nice scenario with some good roleplay to kick it off. The fights were suitable and fun. What screwed this scenario was the final encounter. Unless the party are incredibly lucky or can kill the main villain in one round the scenario fails. It fails because it sets up a action that can't be done.

Although we enjoyed playing the first part of the scenario I think everyone walked away at the end just a bit PO by the ending.

Old Fashioned Feel

3/5

Ran this over two sessions for PFS.

This is an old style dungeon crawl module that brought back memories of the good old days of D&D. If you like that sort of feel in a dungeon module then you'll probably enjoy this.

What prevents me from giving this a higher rating is just how nasty this scenario is for characters of 1st/2nd level. Our game ended up a total party kill as the final boss was just too tough for this level and the dungeon used up so much of their resources before hand (and they rested three times throughout because of that).

If you want a challenge for low levels with the old school feel then you'll enjoy this.

Average

3/5

Played this at low tier. Party was a Rogue, bard, bloodrager, druid (with owlbear) and I think the last was a cleric.

The scenario is a fairly heavy railroad where the events of A lead straight into B and so on. Normally this wouldn't bother me but this time I found it a little forced. That is my only grumble.

The combats were ok and quite fun, but there needed to be more room for the role play. We overran out slot by half hour because we made sure that we spoke to certain NPCs and got a lot more out of it. The venue was happy for us to do so but we had to rush the end because of it (our fault not the scenario). it would have been nice to shrink the dungeon elements down to increase roleplay opportunities though.

Top Notch

5/5

Played this at low tier with three brand new characters but with experienced players.

I really enjoyed the concept and the feel of the adventure really did get my imagination going with images of 19th century India with elephants and tigers. It is rare that a scenario captures the right feel for me.

There is plenty of role play opportunities and we all spent a good amount of time interacting with the NPCs. Afterwards we during the drive home we decided that we would really like to see the NPCs make a return at some point.

The encounters are easy. Really easy but I enjoyed that. The scenario is more role play driven I felt and we could do with more PFS scenarios like that. Not all fights have to be leave you fearing for your character's life.

A big thumbs up for this one.

Also Almost Perfect

4/5

Played at mid-Tier.

An excellent follow on from the first scenario. Lots of recurring references which helped us fit back in. Not so much role play this time but we were spoilt by part 1 so can't grumble there. Part 2 is much more combat driven but like the first but again the combats did not feel deadly like normal.

Really enjoyed City of Strangers parts 1 and 2. More like this would be perfect for me.

Almost Perfect

4/5

Played this at low tier.

I absolutely enjoyed playing this. It was a real delight to find a scenario that isn't OTT combats and silly darkness/blindness style encounters.

There was a hell of a lot of room to actual role play for a change which was really refreshing. The combats were simple and over quickly.

The only reason I didn't rate as 5 stars is because even with a lot of role play and good diplomacy checks it still felt like it took forever to actually get anywhere in finding the NPCs and clues we needed. A little more work there and this would have been 5 stars.

4/5

GM'd this at low tier for five experienced players.

I think this is a really good scenario and we all had a great time. It has a nice mix of role-play, environmental, and combat encounters to keep everyone happy.

There are a couple issues that prevent me giving this five stars:
Firstly, the length of it. Luckily none of us had to get up the next day as we ran five and a half hours. I think it is because three levels was a bit much. Had the first two been combined it might have been better.
Secondly, the events of the last level are not well written. I read it three times before the game but still had to stop briefly to refresh or look things up. The solution is also a little vague. I had to use GM ingenuity to help them solve it.

Still, the players walked away happy and hoping for some connected sequels. Thumbs up.

Annoying but good

3/5

Played this at low tier and without the GM using the stupid OP tactics.

First issue was the time. It took us seven hours to play this scenario and thankfully we had set time aside for that. The for the number of encounters it was too long.

Second issue, challenge aside, the final fight took 25 rounds to play out! By half way through that I was getting a little fed up. The villain was played well but I started just wanting a straight up fight.

But saying that, it wasn't a bad scenario and I had fun playing it. I just wish that it was a little more condensed.

Thumbs Up

4/5

Played this at high tier.

I enjoyed this a lot even if it is very specific and there isn't much to do other than defend a house from an invading force. There is some roleplay but not enough really.

The defence of the house reminded me of Nesting Swallows but better. I didn't feel that the encounters here were too tough. I am sick to death of grapple opponents though. Grapple and darkness are so overused in PFS to the point of boredom.

Even so, I enjoyed this one a lot.

Excellent Wilderness Adventure

4/5

Played this at the higher tier (fighter, wizard, rogue and ranger NPC).

This scenario is a well done overland wilderness trek which is always nice to experience. The dog sled mechanics needed to be a bit better and we were glad we had decided on the ranger NPC or we would all have been walking up the mountain.

The fights were suitably balanced though expected them to be harder for some reason but it didn't detract at all. In fact it meant we all got to show case what our heroes could do.

A rather enjoyable fun scenario.

Too Hard

3/5

Played this at the higher tier with a 5 man party (Arcanist, Fighter, Fighter/Cleric/Hellknight, Ranger and Monk) of experienced players.

This scenario was just too tough on the encounters. We almost TPK'd twice and did lose the Hellknight in the second fight. One fight took almost two hours (an estimated 30 rounds!) in which my character sat out the whole thing charmed. Another had two of us running away in fear for ten rounds.

Each fight felt like a one trick pony to do over anyone with a low will save and then pummel the rest to death. Not fun.

Only reason I'm giving this 3 stars is because despite that we had a good laugh around the table.

Lovecraftian Adventure

3/5

Ran this for PFS.

Call of Cthulhu meets Pathfinder in this nice non-linear adventure. The atmosphere is about right although the combative nature of Pathfinder meant that some of that was lost as the module went along.

What stops me giving Carrion Hill 4 stars is a real lack of proper investigation. A bit more in that area and this module would have been spot on.

Far Too Easy

2/5

Ran this tonight at the lower tier.

The first encounter is tough but about right. The rest of the scenario is a complete cakewalk with nothing to challenge even the most average of player characters.

I won't give it one star simply because if this was run for inexperienced players it would be about right. But experienced or optimizers will simply steamroller through this without breaking a sweat.

Tough but fun

4/5

Played this tonight at the lower tier. I had heard some bad things about this one and how hard it was. Past experience with PFS hard scenarios had turned me off of them but knowing how good our GM was I was well up fir it and I was not disappointed.

I'm not going to spoil anything but the hardest encounter was the first and I can see where some players might well complain at the potential lethality. My group was lucky and we managed to roll some awesome damage which helped considerably. A less optimized or inexperienced group is probably looking at a TPK here.

The rest of the scenario has some really good role-play elements as well combat for those who just like to hit things. I didn't think there was anything outstanding in these encounters but it was nice to encounter monsters not normally seen.

For an experienced group this will be a good fun scenario. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of the potential lethality of the opening encounter.

Ghoulishly Good Fun

5/5

Ran this tonight for the low tier.

Had a really good time with this scenario. Loved running it and although it ended with a TPK I think the players quite liked it too. If you play up the weird geometry and the sense of the unnatural you can add a nice Lovecraftian element.

The only issue I had was that it took four readings of the intro to understand that the jungle map presented was atop the spire. That could have been explained better. Otherwise a really good scenario.

Dungeon Crawl

4/5

Played this under PFS.

Thornkeep is simply a large dungeon crawl. If you like that sort of thing where it is more combat and trap searching then you'll probably really enjoy this. If you want role play then best to avoid as there isn't much interaction down here.

I rather enjoyed the whole experience apart from one character death (he was restored to the living thankfully). The problem with this adventure is that some of the encounters are far too powerful for the levels of adventurers delving those levels. Once again Paizo authors need to consider appropriate encounter levels and challenges.

But even with that, I fully enjoyed playing this module.

Awesome if you like your RP

4/5

GMed this for the higher tier.

Espionage, intrigue, and a connection to an earlier scenario that I hope gets fleshed out for a follow up.

This scenario is nicely roleplay heavy which my players and I greatly enjoyed. It makes a nice change. There are plenty of NPCs to get involved with and the players have options as to which path they wish to follow.

The combat however is far too easy and I knew that the party would just breeze through, which they did. Otherwise I may well have given this 5 stars.

If you like your roleplay or you have a party of new players, this is a good scenario to choose.

Excellent Scenario

4/5

GMed this for the higher tier and we had a real blast with this one.

The scenario is simple. A pathfinder working for the Blakros museum has gone a bit wiggy and disappeared. Find him and whatever ancient horror he may have unleashed and stop it.

The combats were tough but fair (a rare combination in PFS) and we all had a fun even when characters were taking heavy hits. Thumbs up to the author for a good choice of encounters.

There are just two small things that stop me giving this five stars. Firstly, although it fitted nicely into a four hour time slot had there been just a little more investigation it would have been spot on. Lastly, if you have an animal companion that doesn't fly, you lose your companion. Otherwise really good scenario.

Good but too easy

3/5

Played this scenario last night at low tier.

I do enjoy investigative scenarios but PFS never seems to get them right. They are either too difficult (throaty mermaid) or, as in this case, just far too easy. You're pretty much told where to look in the opening monologue.

The only thing that saved this scenario for me was the interaction and roleplay. Rarely do I find I get to put across my character's own POV and really come out as anything other than a set of numbers but this scenario allowed me to let lose with that.

I think that Stolen Heir is a great scenario for starting players as they get both roleplay and combat in fair measure.

GM'ed at low tier.
I picked this scenario because it was recommended as suitable for a cavalier PC with mount, so that one of my regular players could actually get the use out of his chosen class.

I was not disappointed and neither was he. Lots of opportunity for mounted combat and lots of open area to expand what the party could do rather than confined to tight dungeon corridors.

I also liked that about half way through the scenario forks and the players get to make decisions or actions that alter the end of the story. More like this would be good.

Good Icy Fun

3/5

Played this some time ago at lower tier and found it to be a good fun scenario with challenging combats and plenty of opportunity for roleplay. Thumbs up.

I ran this recently for low tier and while everyone loved it, there did seem to be confusion over what they needed to do in the last third of the scenario. I have to agree that it isn't too clear for the players perhaps.

It is a good fun scenario and one where I certainly recommend it for newer players once they get a level or two under their belts.
