It states that you lose blessing of the faithful if you wear armor but doesn't list what blessing of the faithful is. Or did I miss it?

Dark Archive

Cleric archetype ecclesithurge missing blessing of the faithful ability description? If you wear armor you lose it, but it doesn't say what it does. Or am I missing something?

Dark Archive

The way it is currently set up, the flavor of the spells created by words of power seem to be very... wacky.

I would see words of power as modifying and customizing a main effect rather than just sticking a bunch of random words together to make a spell that fries your enemies and allows you to see magic auras.

I'd probably have a target word, a set of primary effects of which you can only have 1 per spell, and a list of secondary effects that you can add as you see fit. This way you can't have really wacky spells that do completely unrelated things. At that point you are pretty much casting 2 spells at once and you might as well allow separate targets.

For instance, using my proposed change, you could cast a spell with a primary effect of <cold damage> and a secondary effect of <slow> and <decreased visibility> in a small cone.

Seems this change would allow for a more cohesive magic system than the current throw words into a cauldron and stir until you have a big goopy mess.

Dark Archive

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but Flame Jet and Spark have the exact same statistics, except for damage type, and have different costs. Is this intended? If so, why?

Dark Archive

So, sometimes the you can spend prestige awards to gain spells that are better than normal. It sames something like

Faction Guide wrote:
Such versions are damaging to the mind, however, inflicting permanent Wisdom drain upon the reader, though some believe this is a small price to pay for the knowledge

The question I have are

1. Is this a one time thing or does it happen every time you memorize the spell?
2. How much wisdom drain occurs?

Thanks

Dark Archive

I've been looking through the Faction Guide and I saw the Ninth Battalion had a number of new bard songs that you can pay prestige awards to gain. One of is called “Taargick and the Quest
for Sky". It basically gives all allies a number of temporary hp = to your bard level. At the end of the song the temporary hp are removed. So can you simply stop and restart the song every round to keep refreshing the temporary hp? Effectively giving your party DR = your bard level? At early levels this would cost your standard action every round, but later it would only cost your move or swift action. This seems incredibly powerful.

If you had a natural bite attack, would you replace the given damage for the bite with Animal Fury( Barbarian Rage Power ) or would you take your normal natural attack damage?

Dark Archive

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

Mithril reduces the acp by 3. In addition, all mithril armor is masterwork. It seems to count this as 2 seperate things in the mithril description. So does that decrease the armor check penalty by an additional 1?

Dark Archive

The natural spell feat allows a druid to cast spells while using wild shape. Why can't a wizard/sorcerer take this feat to cast spells while polymorphed?

Dark Archive

If I wanted to take a Weapon Focus that would effect touch attacks, would that be "unarmed strike"? It seems like this would be the most logical choice, but I'm not sure what the rules are for touch attacks( they specifically mention 'rays' in the PF Core ).

Thanks in advance!

Dark Archive

Hey guys, I have an idea for a PFS character, but came up with some gray areas in the rules. Since this is going to be in PFS I would like an official response from Paizo as different GMs allow different things when there are ambiguities in the rules.

First off:

Quote:

Dervish Dance
You have learned to turn your speed into power, even with a heavier blade.

Prerequisites: Dexterity 13, Weapon Finesse, Perform (dance) 2 ranks, proficient with scimitar.

Benefit: When wielding a scimitar with one hand, you can use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on melee attack and damage rolls. You treat the scimitar as a one-handed piercing weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a duelist’s precise strike ability). The scimitar must be for a creature of your size. You cannot use this feat if you are carrying a weapon or shield in your off hand.

Basic assumption: Touch attacks can be use Weapon Finesse.

So, the question is what counts as "holding a weapon or shield" in the off-hand? I was assuming this was because the extra weight in the off hand prevented you from moving properly to gain the benefit of the feat. If you have a touch spell, like produce flame or shocking grasp in your off hand, does that negate the benefit of the feat? If you attack with the scimitar and the touch spell does that negate the benefits from the feat( obviously taking the appropriate 2-weapon fighting penalties )?

Thanks! (( Again I welcome and desire the opinions of the community, but as I am trying to make a pfs character and don't want to be subject to the individual GMs interpretation of the rules, I'd appreciate a paizo ruling one way or the other )).

Dark Archive

So... based on the current setup with the Eidolon simply being an Outsider, is he immune to bane weapons where a sub-type is specifically needed? Also, would this make it immune to Ranger abilities since they also require a subtype?

This thread is in response to thread bloat caused by the discussion of various material within official threads. While not applicable in all cases, this proposition should allow for a more streamlined access to the communities questions/concerns by paizo staff and other community members.

Proposal:
When wishing to receive official/peer opinion/clarifications first use the message board search capabilities to see if an appropriate thread exists. If it does not, start a new thread in the proper location. Seed the thread with an appropriate discussion starter. Then move over to the official thread and post your question/feedback along with a link to the previously created thread. Request comments to be posted in that thread only.

This should cut down on thread bloat and help consolidate information. In this manner Paizo has fewer posts to search through to get at what the questions/concerns of the community are and have ready access to community feedback through the linked thread.

I am going to start using this template and hope others follow suite.

Cheers!

It seems like quite a few people went tried for the shock value of macabre/weird/alien monstrosities this year. Am I the only one who feels that my vote was trying to be shocked/weirded out of me this year?

Dark Archive

Anyone else have the realization they should have submitted one of their other items this year? After looking at the judges comments and rationales for the top 32, I realized I had mis-judged what they were looking for and should have submitted my first item. Not that my first item would have been in the top 32, but it seems more in line with what the judges were looking for this year.

So, anyone else get that feeling?

Dark Archive

so, you can get craft arms and armor at 5th level, but most of the enhancements require you to be higher than 5th level. For instance, flaming requires you to be level 10. That seems extremely high for a +1 bonus enhancement. It's a relatively minor enhancement on the list, so why the lvl 10 pre-requisite for it? I would have thought the caster level would have been tied to the bonus given...

Dark Archive

Name your favorite wondrous item, from anywhere. If it isn't in the Pathfinder Core book, cite what book it's in and give a brief description of what it does.

I like Feather Token and Deck of Illusions.

Dark Archive

I was just wondering what the rationale was to make previous years top 8 not eligible for this years competition? Where the top 8 not considered "new" design talent? While I can see the winner being excluded( they are going to be published in a paizo product ), but was less definite on the runners up.

Dark Archive

So, if you have a Merciful Vicious Great Sword +2 it would do 5d6 +2 non-lethal damage and 1d6 non-lethal to the user?

Dark Archive

It would be nice to know if the Judges rejected your Wondrous Item or not. I don't think there is anything currently in place, but the underlying technology should be able to email you if/when your submission gets put in the reject pile. I am sure they are already going through submissions to try to lessen the impact of all the last minute submissions.

Dark Archive

We have are in the middle/end of the first legacy of fire book. I was a 4th lvl wizard, but the DM allowed me to change over to a Summoner. I took special care not to optimize the eidolon.

Eidolon:

Evolutions:
Bite
Trip
Slam
Reach( slam)
Push( bite )
Push( slam )
Increased Damage( Slam )

I, unfortunately, didn't keep detailed notes about each encounter, but I do remember the gist of them. I also was rolling horribly. 75% of my rolls were between 3 and 5.

The first combat took place against an ant lion. The Dwarven barbarian was in the lead and fell victim to its quicksand trap. The first couple of rounds were the ant lion grabbing the dwarf and the dwarf breaking free while we tried to get a rope down to him. Eventually we gave up as the dwarf kept dropping the rope when he would get grappled. I summoned an earth elemental on the other side of the ant lion and my eidolon jumped down into the hole to flank from the front. The cleric joined the eidolon and a big melee ensued. The eidolon failed to hit, but the earth elemental hit twice for about 20 dam total before disappearing. The cleric missed as well, but the bard hit with ranged attacks. The dwarven barbarian finally succeeded in not being grappled and attacked with his axe landing the killing blow. Final tally was that the eidolon did nothing but provide flank for the summon. The summon was what made the summoner useful( I also tried hitting it with a crossbow, but missed ).

The second fight was against 2 large spiders and 2 small spiders. I had sent my eidolon forward to scout, but he ended up with an 11 stealth( rolled a 3 ) and a 9 perception( rolled a 2 ) so he was surprised by the mass of spiders who attacked him. The eidolon did roll well for his fortitude saves against the poison, but was webbed in place. Everyone else ran into the room. As the fight progressed the Eidolon spent 4 rounds getting out of the web( dc 20 for the first 2 rounds he was at +9, and the last 2 +18 ). I summoned a drone ant who killed one of the small spiders and did damage to one of the large spiders. By the time the eidolon was able to help out the fight was over and he hadn't done anything but absorb hits( which is important, but not very satisfying ).

The 3rd encounter was against 2 sphinx constructs made of iron wood( hardness 8 ). I actually rolled well in this encounter and the eidolon tripped each sphinx and killed one of them almost on his own. I also summoned an elemental that went into the wall and could flank from behind.

The 4th encounter was against 3 chokers. The eidolon did decently managing to hit one of them with it's slam, doing enough damage to kill it. The rest of the party took care of the other 2( the eidolon tried to help, but kept missing ).

The 5th encounter was a little odd. The eidolon was again scouting and botched his rolls. he was attacked by a were leopard in the surprise round for 12 damage( the leopard was using a punch dagger... ). Everyone charged in after that. The area was odd in that it required people to make a fortitude save or gain the confused state. The summoner and the sorcerer did not pass and stayed confused for 4 or 5 rounds. The sorcerer rolled and was able to act for 2 or 3 of those rounds while the summoner just hit himself or babbled incoherently. The eidolon took 18 damage on round 2. During the rest of the fight the eidolon managed to hit once( he had 2 attacks a round at +8 and needed to hit ac 17 ). The summoner came out of his confusion in the round after the eidolon was critically bitten for 21 damage killing him( so he couldn't use life link ). He then cast haste on the party. The raging barbarian had to make a save and succeeded. The following round the creature was brought down.

All in all, my poor rolls prevent me from really being able to say much about the play test. Even when I was hitting I was doing about the same damage as the raging barbarian( if I hit with both attacks ). He was doing d12 + 10. I didn't feel like I stepped on anyones toes, though I was frustrated by my poor rolling.

Does everything count toward the 300 word limit? I.e. Does "Aura" and strength of aura count in the 300 word limit? Price?( both the word and the gp value you assign to it ). Requirements? ( spells, feats( craft wondrous item is 3 words after all ), etc ).

So what counts and what doesn't?

Dark Archive

Not sure if I was supposed to post this here or in the AGP test area so, I am going to try both.

Will Boon Companion from Seeker of Secrets be updated to work with Eidolons?

Dark Archive

So... 2 things.

1. Has anyone tried making a Druid 1/Summoner 4 with Boon Companion from Seeker of Secrets?( I.e. 5th level Animal companion, 4th level Eidolon )

2. Boon Companion specifically works with Familiars and Animal Companions. Are there any plans to make it work with the Eidolon?

Dark Archive

So... Share spells says you can cast spells on your Eidolon even if they have a target of "you". It doesn't say that it works in reverse, but it seems like it should. In other words, can your Eidolon cast spell on you with that have a target of "you"?

Dark Archive

I think there should be a feat that allows you to change the eidolons base form. Maybe even letting you change it whenever you could normally change evolution point allocation.

Dark Archive

This was kind of discussed in another thread, but it was a little off topic. The basic question is: Can you change the base form of the eidolon whenever you change the evolution points?

While it specifically says you can change small/medium size choices each time, it doesn't mention whether you can choose a different base form. I'd been assuming you could because of the very fluid nature of the other evolution choices, but if that isn't the case, I'd like to know.

3 people marked this as FAQ candidate. Answered in the FAQ. 1 person marked this as a favorite.

Caster level obviously is used to set the spellcraft DC for magic item creation. It also seems to indicate that it is the minimum caster level required to create the item. I have 2 questions:

1. is this correct? You need to be a 12 lvl caster in order to make Feather Token?
2. Can this be overcome like other requirements? I.e. increasing the dc by 5?

It seems silly to require a 12th lvl caster to make a 50gp item.

Dark Archive

I kind of wish they had released it before thanksgiving though. I have a game on Sunday and I am going to be switching out my char for a summoner( it matches his concept more ).

Dark Archive

So... I can't take Improved Grapple with my animal companion without him having a 3 int and taking improved unarmed strike first?

Dark Archive

So... Fiery Gaze + Obscuring Mist + Bow = win?

As far as I can tell this would allow you to use ranged attacks against enemies within the aoe of obscuring mist without penalty. I would also give you the bonuses labeled under invisibility as you can still see your target, but they can't see you if you are further than 10' away( but only if they are inside the obscuring mist too. It turns obscuring mist into a quasi-Improved Invisibility. Except the duration is 1 min/level and you are confined to a 20ft radius fog cloud.

So, I was sitting here and a line from a movie I watched recently popped into my head in regards to Cavaliers.

Adhemar: And how would you beat him?
Fence: With a stick. While he slept. But on a horse, with a lance? That man is unbeatable.
-From A Knight's Tale

This seems to be the core theme behind the Cavalier class.

Are there any lines from other movies that seem to represent the core essence behind the Cavalier or Oracle classes?

Dark Archive

I have been assuming that when a Revelation has a description of what bonuses you gain at multiple levels and then has a duration listed at the end, it applies to all levels of the ability. However, another way to read it would be that only the ability that comes directly before the duration sentence has it's duration capped.

For instance:

Gaze of Flames (Su): You can see through fire, fog, and smoke without penalty as long as the light is sufficient to allow you to see normally. At 7th level, you can gaze through any source of flame within 10 feet per oracle level, as if using clairvoyance. You can use this ability for a number of rounds per day equal to your oracle level, but these rounds do not need to be consecutive.

Does this mean that you can use Gaze of Flames for a number of rounds equal to your oracle level per day or does it mean that the normal version has unlimited use and the 7th level version can only be used for a number of rounds per day equal to your oracle level?

I had been assuming that the first was true( I.e. any use of any of the Gaze of Flames ability counted as 1 round of use ).

this would be a lot more useful if the normal version was unlimited an only the clairvoyance option had a rounds/day limit.

Dark Archive

I looked at the multi-classing section of PHB and I can't find anywhere that it says you cannot take the same class more than once. Obviously they levels would not stack for oracle level based abilities, but could you be both the Oracle of Battle and the Oracle of Flame for instance? Kind of like 2 Concepts either agreeing to use you as a conduit together or trying to fight each other for your favor? It would be kind of a cool concept if your character was the battleground for 2 opposing Foci, each trying to bribe/cajole/woo the character into following their paradigm.

Dark Archive

Everyone has different ideas about what spells are awesome and why they are awesome. I figure a thread specifically for explaining why a specific spell should be considered awesome might help people think of new ways to use existing spells. I want to limit this to anything allowed in Organized Play as I think that would be of most benefit to the people playing Pathfinder. I know a lot of people who don't allow 3.5 splat books and the like in their campaigns. If you are choosing a spell not in the the Player's Handbook specify what PF material it comes from or link to it on the pfsrd site.

My current choice is Emergency Force Sphere. It is from the Cheliax companion book.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/spells-of-golarion/emergency-force-sphere

The only problem with the pfsrd description is that casting time is 1 immediate action, not 1 standard action( as per the Cheliax companion book, unless that has been errata'd ). I really like the spell because it can be used for protection even when it isn't your turn. If Archers suddenly appear from the forest on round 2 of combat you can pop up the shield and pretty much guarantee your safety. You can also use it to trap someone next to you. Like segregating the enemy cleric from his friends and locking him inside with the fighter and rogue... Since it is an immediate action it can be cast along with another spell that round. It's like a quickened spell without the increase in caster level.

Dark Archive

Seems to me that this would be a popular multi-class. It may hurt your smite evil/spell/lay on hands progression or what not, but from an RP/Flavor point of view, the classes seem to mesh quite a bit. I can easily see a Paladin of Iomedae/Cavalier of the Order of the Sword for example. Now to convince my dm to allow me to do it...

Dark Archive

So, reflex saves are obviously designed around the idea of someone being fast enough to avoid an aoe or other dextrous challenges. However, what happens when you literally have nowhere you can move to that is not effected by the aoe? For instance the mage( for some reason ) decides to make a dome of stone( Wall of Stone ) around you and himself. Next round he casts fireball in the enclosed area. He sized the dome such that the entire domed in area was within the aoe of the fireball. Do you still get a reflex save? Technically, there is nowhere you could move to to avoid the aoe.

Thanks!

Dark Archive

It seems like they would, but I just wanted to make sure the the Stone Focus abilities Rock Throwing and Shard Explosion were meant to stack.

Dark Archive

At least in my copy of the downloaded pdf version, the 'a' in oracle does not appear in the title for the class description.

I might also suggest putting "waves" in quotes when using it as a sample focus in the focus section. It made me stumble a bit when reading it. I know this is supposed to be play test... but I can't help myself.

Dark Archive

Just wondering people's opinions.

Personally, I think the mount would be a lot better than the spirit except that the mount is limited on where it can follow you. In general it cannot go into dungeons, buildings, etc.

Hey guys, is there a trait that gives you a handle animal as a class skill?

thanks!

Edit: Just found Savannah Child in Legacy of Fire... Are there any others?

Dark Archive

Hey guys, I need help with fleshing out a character concept. I am going to be starting a character in the CoT AP fairly soon and I started speccing out a Rogue character. The only rogue characters I've made before are skill/interaction rogues than combat oriented. However, I found out that we are going to have a Bard and another rogue in the mix. I talked to the other Rogue and I think we were going in the same direction so I wanted to make a combat rogue instead ( He altered his idea slightly to be less conflicting with the bard ).

That being said, I am currently talking with the GM and trying to get permission to take the Assassin prestige class. I am either going to A. Be evil with a reason to help out the town, or B. Get the "must be evil" requirement waived.

Fluff:
I have a general idea of a backstory at the moment and I am planning to fill it in later. Basically, my character grew up with with his mother, his father abandoned them when he was young. Life was tough, but not overly so and Chelaxian society, if not embracing, at the least tolerated his half-orc heritage. Even with the occasional help of his uncle( a fairly notorious Actor ), they were often strapped for cash and had to live in the poorer sections of town. And, as young boys are apt to do, he started exploring and getting into trouble very early. Learning the ways of the streets was equivalent to survival and he learned them well, and fast.
Around the age of 7 he met a fellow half-orc named Kendrick. Kendrick spotted the boys quick reflexes, above average strength and intelligence, and offered to train him in the rogue arts in exchange for servitude until his "graduation" from his tutelage. Also, he would have to pay him the sum of 1000 gold within 2 years of being on his own. My character agreed. Kendrick ended up being an assassin and so my character was started upon that path. As a cover for various illicit activities, Kendrick also made him apprentice with his uncle as an Actor.

Anyway, I have the following so far:

Race: Half-Orc
Al: Not sure. LE or Some form of N probably

Stats( assume 10 if not mentioned 20 pt buy ):
int twf
Str 14 15
Dex 14 15
Int 14 16 14
Chr 14 14

I could also just go +2 to str instead of +2 int

Favored class bonus to sp
Skills:
Acrobatics
Bluff
Climb
Disable Device
Disguise
Intimidate
Perception
Performance( Acting )
Sleight of Hand
Stealth
Use Magic Device

With 16 int I was thinking of taking Spellcraft and the classically schooled trait

Campaign trait: Child of Infamy
If I don't take Classically schooled, I am thinking about reactionary

1st lvl feat: I was thinking Skill Focus( Acrobatics ), Catch Off Gaurd, or improved initiative. If I choose twf stat choices, Two-Weapon Fighting.

Any thoughts, suggestions or ideas?

Thanks

Dark Archive

Hey guys, I thought I remembered seeing a feat that gave +30'( or +60' can't remember which ) range to a races darkvision. Was I imagining this or does it actually exist somewhere? As it isn't in the bestiary, I am guessing that it isn't Core.

Dark Archive

What I am wondering is how the half-orc is balanced against the other player races? It seems like it's racial abilities don't stack up at all and that isn't taking into account the rp penalties it takes for having a negative social stigma in most locals. I mean, comparing it to the dwarf( the other medium race with darkvision ) I can't see how you would pick the half-orc unless you wanted to for rp purposes( which is totally understandable, but... ). I mean, if you were going to be creating a heavily charisma based character I guess( which still seems odd while playing a half-orc ). Just figured I'd ask and see if anyone had caught something I am missing.

Dark Archive

So the Craft Construct feat requires a caster level of 5 as a prereq( as well as some other stuff ). A wizard who is planning to pick it up can get it at the minimum caster level. However, every construct I have seen has a minimum CL of 7. So that means that you can get Craft Construct at 5th level, but can't do anything with it until 7th level. Someone correct me if I am wrong. ( and before you say CL isn't a requirement for building the item it was pointed out to me that on page 461 in the core book it states that CL is a prereq for crafting the item )

It just seems kind of silly to me to allow you to get the feat at 5th level and then not be able to use it for 2 levels. You might as well make the caster level requirement 7th.

Dark Archive

Is it me or would a staff of Transformation be pretty handy for a rogue? DC 20 UMD allows you to activate it and it only costs 29400. Seems really worth it to me if you are going to get into combat at all.

EDIT: forgot to add the cost for 10 bull strength potions the first time.( assuming the creator of the staff could not make the potion )

Dark Archive

I noticed that CL is part of the description of the item, which is, obviously, normal. However, it also appears that you do not need to have a caster level equal to the CL in order to make the item. It is not always listed as a requirement. Does that mean you do not need to meet the CL if it doesn't say you have to?
