Mark, do you folks plan on making any maps available as art resources?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Hey there-

I had a problem with the payment method on my subscription, so the initial payment was declined.

I updated the payment method, and it said my order was pending on the new payment method, but I think the authorization expired yesterday.

Looks like the order is in limbo now. Any update?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I'll definitely be interested in research. I'll post more tomorrow afternoon.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

How do you feel about the dark lurker rogue archetype?

I think I'm going to run with the idea of a rogue/warpriest of Ashava that has been acting as an infiltrator and breaking up cult cells or groups of necromancers. (I'd take the Liberator's Calling trait.)

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I was thinking either a paladin of Tanagaar or a warpriest of Ashava.

Character Arc?:
I'm interest in the the idea of being tempted by the "true power" of darkness, versus the idea of the night being safe/guarded for all.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I'd be interested, Neil. I just got in to PBP this year, but I'm running a couple games, and I'm committed to the format.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I'm interested. I'm thinking about doing a halfling shaman with slums spirit that has connections to the Bellflower Network. Sort of a "voice of the streets" character. Should be easy to connect to the campaign.

Forged in Flame, Part 2: Cleansed with Fire is another one. (You don't necessarily need to have played the first one to understand this one. They are loosely tied together.)

Seconding The Disappeared.

Sounds good, Dr. Evil.

I have my character mostly done, though still have to put him into a profile.

Couple questions:
Am I reading the rules right that the only feat we start with is a class feat?

Also, does my reading gibe with yours? As a monk, I have 3 signature skills. I'm not necessarily trained in those skills unless I choose them with my allocation of 3 (plus Int mod) trained skills.

Signature skills just means that you can take them to legendary, eventually. You put in points to become trained with them.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

If you don't want to try the multiclassing, I was thinking of doing a pretty support-focused bard, so I could try to bring the primary healing.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

The bard preview looked great. Getting very excited.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Sorcerer blog was great! Really interested to see how that turns out. I'm glad you are thinking about a monk, Jacob. I want to see one of those in action.

I'm still thinking bard or rogue, leaning bard.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

All of the blogs about the playtest are HERE

The core classes + alchemist are all in the playtest.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I'm thinking probably a bard, but I might change my mind after I see the class preview.

I'm also a big fan of the dreamthief and the gloomblade. Kudos for including the feat that lets you make a thrown-weapon gloomblade! (I sense a Black Butterfly-themed fighter in my future.)

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Kate, do you have any preference for what tier you'd like to run?

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

I'm in! I'm flexible about what kind of character I'll play. (Probably a caster, bard, or rogue).

Alias: ChesterCopperpot
Character: TBD as soon as the Playtest is released
PFS #: 48019

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

For me:
Shaman (Heavens)--Useful utility caster, doesn't need to breath, has Heaven's Leap to make movement a little easier on the team, flexible spell list and wandering spirit.

Slayer--Nice spread of skills, strong swimmer, trapfinding. Hatpins (her primary weapons) aren't hindered underwater. Will need a hand breathing underwater.

Skald--Primary combat shtick (melee claws, raging) not hindered underwater. No ability to breath underwater and pretty group-dependent on the utility of raging song.

On balance, if we need a caster, I'd go for shaman; if we need melee I'll go slayer.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Hey folks!
I have a few characters in tier.

Slight preference for either:
Slayer/investigator 8 or
Skald 6

Also have:
Melee Inquisitor 9
Shaman 9
Ranged occultist 8
Oracle 7

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

In combat it suggests for her to cast anti life shell to keep melee attackers at bay, and then cast spells such as harm and poison from the safety of it, but they are both touch spells. I’m happy with her casting range spells from it but am I missing an ability or item that lets her cast touch spells at range ?

I came to the same conclusion you did. I gave her a Reach Metamagic Gem to use.

Night March of Kalkamedes is great. (Particularly for new players.) Wrath of the Fleshwarped Queen is another really fun goblin adventure.

It might be too narrow or obscure, but Ancient Kingdoms might be an interesting theme - I'd love to delve into the Jistka Imperium, Ninshabur, or the Jaytirian Society.

Another way to go for a buffing-focused cleric is the Bless Equipment chain of feats from the Undead Slayers handbook. Very effective and gives you something to do every combat.

Quick Occult Questions, Mark:

The description of ley lines says: "Occult skill unlocks such as dowsing can also help detect the presence of ley lines over long distances, which can be quite useful in locating an accessible portion of a ley line"

The dousing skill unlock doesn't set a DC for finding a ley line. What do you think would be appropriate? Would it be easier to find more powerful ley lines?

Appreciate your thoughts! Thanks.

Is there a way to search through the books you have? Like, say I want to look up the grapple rules: How do I do that?

It shouldn't have the dagger. It's from CRB, not UI.

That's what was tripping me up. Thanks, Mark.

Great work on this. Lots to love.

Gutsy move to make a variation on an existing item, but you totally pulled it off! Also, proved that a concise item could still be very evocative. Nice work!

Critique away, friends:

Pendant of Hidden Malice
Aura moderate enchantment and illusion; CL 10th
Slot neck; Price 29,000 gp; Weight
Description
This heavy gold amulet depicts a lidded eye embedded in the palm of an open left hand. When the wearer activates the item, the lid opens, revealing a black, opalescent stone veined with crimson and amber. While the eye remains open, the wearer is invisible, as greater invisibility. Each round, the wearer can maintain this invisibility as a free action. When the wearer allows the invisibility to end, or if the invisibility is dispelled, the eye immediately closes. The magic of the amulet can be used for 10 rounds per day. These rounds need not be consecutive.

Should a creature view the wearer while the eye is open, via see invisibility, true seeing, or similar effects, the viewer is beset by ill fortune and must roll twice, taking the worse result, on all ability checks, attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks it attempts while the open eye is in sight. This is a mind-affecting curse effect that can only be avoided by closing or averting the eyes, as a viewer would a gaze attack. Effects that merely outline the wearer, such as glitterdust and faerie fire, do not trigger this curse, nor do non-visual senses, such as blindsight.
Construction
Requirements Craft Wondrous Item, greater invisibility, ill omen; Cost 14,500 gp

I have seen some dynamite item names this year. Kudos!

Advice:

  • Read Sean's excellent advice collection, even if you are making a weapon or armor. Honestly, it covers 90% of the missteps that I have seen.

  • Read the gripe thread from years past. (Even if, at times, it is unpleasant and negative.) This is an easy way to see if your item description is treading on hidden memes from the contest that would be easy to overlook. (Filigree, torc, runes, etc.)

  • Unless there is a good reason not to, have your item's function compliment its form. Usually, swords should do hit-y things! Armor should be protective. Playing against this can be interesting, but run your design by some friends and make sure that the form of your item doesn't seem arbitrary.

The further people stray from our styles, the harder I have to work in development.
So are you suggesting a rules citation (Publication X, Page y) instead?
That would eat away your word count. Why not just list the spells and abilities leave well enough alone? If a person wants to check them, there's a search function on the PRD. Adding hyperlinks isn't likely to do much except take that much more time. They aren't required, and I don't know anyone that would vote up an item over another just because it had hyperlinks.

People also reacted generally unfavorably when I listed sources for the spells on my staff last year. I'd either hyperlink or trust people to look up things they aren't familiar with.

Hey all! I would be happy to do some critiques, and I'll shoot a PM to some folks with the thing I'm working on. I'm having a wicked hard time with pricing.

Good luck! Pricing is one of the trickiest parts of the competition, as we are often trying to price effects that don't conform well to the magic item creation guidelines. It's been said before by folks more experienced than I, but it is a good idea to start with the item creation guidelines, then compare the price to existing items to see if it's in the right ballpark.

(If you want me to have a look, PM me. Happy to help.)

I would certainly include them. From an in-game perspective, you would need those spells to create the item. From a contest perspective, it shows you did you homework on the special ability.

Details will be forthcoming in advance of each round, but yes.

I understand we will get more details soon, but does anyone know how to find the details for the map round from last year's Superstar? I'm new to RPGSS and I've been looking around at past submissions. I found the actual maps that people submitted, but I couldn't find the rules for that round.

I'm not presuming that I'll advance to the top 32, but if I do I'd like to have planned a little beforehand, if possible.

I wouldn't get too caught up in last year's map rules, as they look to be changing a bit for this year. From what Owen said, it's going to be a map that fits on a Flip Mat and you will have 50 words to describe it.

Though I was surprised by the timeframe, I also prefer it to the old one.

I think the expanded categories for round 1 are great. It should give a little better variety during voting.

Obviously the drawback to ranged is the huge feat tax.

having to take point blank, precise, rapid, deadly, clustered and now quick draw with a thrown weapon build. It just makes it so much less fun than other builds until the later levels. "Well I cant get precise shot until level 3 I guess I'm not hitting anything for 2 levels"

True, but you're still a swashbuckler (with weapon finesse). Open with a thrown attack, then set up a flank. True, the power level of this build really takes off at 5, but you're hardly useless at low level.

Scarab Sages RPG Superstar 2015 Top 32

Dagger-throwing flying blade swashbuckler is a fun option. If you worship Pharasma (and get her deific obedience) you can prioritize a blinkback belt over a Dex belt without suffering in the accuracy department.

See if your GM is okay with the standard rules for combining magic items so you can eventually add Dex bonuses to that blinkback belt.

You actually probably want a ~12 STR to hold you over until agile. (If your campaign is typical, you might be level 5-6 before you can afford it, and you WANT that blinkback belt first). If you are doing swashbuckler, damage is going to come from having several attacks. Small bonuse-- a +1 or +2 from STR, weapon spec., weapon training--add up for you. A lot of your damage will come from precise strike. I played a similar character in a couple modules at mid levels, and I found it was better to maintain a modest strength and just up the enhancement bonus on my dagger. (Plus, you'll be really happy you didn't dump strength the first time you meet a shadow.)

The weaknesses of the build are DR at early levels (until you get clustered shot) and enemies immune to precision damage.
