I have my pdf copy. Did some skimming and I love the section on the Rivethun. Also the amount of queer rep in the book is truly incredible.

One weird thing is that there is a spell that is a leveled spell but its description refers to it as a Cantrip.

Also it feels like their is a page missing before you get into the deities.

Back to positives, the section on counter cultures is pretty neat. I definitely need to go back into the book in more detail though.

Since D&D 3rd edition, when Dwarves could finally pursue arcane classes like wizards and sorcerers (which they couldn't in earlier editions, being magic-resistant by nature), I've seriously wanted a setting to run with that explore the idea of geomantic sorcerers or rune wizards scribing spells onto the walls of their homes and workplaces. Various 3rd party supplements toyed around with it, from companies like Green Ronin and White Wolf, but WotC seemed to shy away from presenting dwarves so radically differently from their 1st/2nd edition roots.

I'm going to have to check this out and see if the twenty-three year old idea (!!!) that 'dwarves can be wizards now' has gotten a bit more development than 'dwarves can be wizards now.' :)

The mention of an entire clan devoted to magic has be excited!

Sounds like Clan Runebinder is right up your alley. Don't forget to check out the Blue Wardens of Tar-Kazmukh, too!

"I am Pakano, champion of Falcon House. This spring, I will take my place among the leaders of the tribe!"

There's a bit of grumbling around the fire circle, but not enough to disturb the celebratory atmosphere of the gathering. Everyone here is used to Pakano's boasting and grandious plans.

For his part, Pakano seems disappointed that his proclamation isn't greeted by cheers. He drops back into the circle and pouts.

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

Preparation Points Earned: 15

Preparations for the festival go well, and the rest of the following is in high spirits. (Except for Pakano, who spends the day loafing around while trying to look busy.)

During the late afternoon before the Green Moon ceremony, the Broken Tusks gather to share a hearty meal of stewed meat and spirits. Meanwhile, Argakoa’s songsingers in training, including Kala Dja, take turns telling origin myths. When it is Argakoa’s version, she tells of the “first winter,” which turned the whole world and even the moon above an ashen white. When spring finally came, the moon was so happy she gave birth to a river of stars. This river, which many Hallit-speakers call the Moontail, is still visible in the night sky from spring until autumn. Come winter, the moon protects her children by hiding them under a blanket of darkness. The Night of the Green Moon celebrates the beginning of spring, when the tundra thaws to reveal green grass and the moon uncovers her children.

Feel free to add an origin story (here or in Fireside) if you feel so moved, Kala Dja!

After dinner, you are hustled away to the tribe's tattoo artist, Sidke, who tells you that Grandfather Eiwa has asked her to give each of you a special tattoo to commemorate your appointment as the tribe's scouts.

The artist works with incredible speed and precision, and Nakta, the following's healer ministers to you afterward, making sure the marking is set and your skin is well on its way to healing.

For Iskra, she asks to "borrow" one of Tomi's feather to attach to her nedle comb while working. She inscribes the design on Iskra's shoulder, a ring of three curved terrorbird feathers.

This tattoo functions as a familiar tattoo, and it grants you the beast senses relic gift. Your familiar tattoo can hold your animal companion, rather than a familiar.

For Impulse, Sidke adds blue-green spikes that spring from the androids circuit tattoos. The ink almost seems to gleam in the light.

This tattoo functions as a jolt coil spellheart attached to your armor. It also grants the feather steps relic gift.

When she reaches Kala Dja, the artist carefully takes her hand. Turning it over, she admires the callouses that the young scout has developed while practicing with her spirit blade. "It is good to fight in defense of the tribe," she says as she turns Kala Dja's hand over and begins to trace glyphs on each of her fingers, "but it is hard to fight what you do not understand." When she is done with her work, a red glyph is picked out in intricate detail below each knuckle.

This is a reading glyph. It also grants the shadow smith relic gift. (Though the item is formed out of glowing, rune-covered energy instead of shadow.)

On Grymgold, Sidke colors a ball of flame that almost seems to leap off the back of the dwarf's hand, then encases it in a lattice of ivory. Grimgold feels a flush briefly spread across his body when the tattoo is completed.

This tattoo is functions as a flaming star spellheart attached to your armor and also grants the word of faith relic gift.

Eirthgim receives a tattoo of a series of golden concentric circles over his heart.

This is an enveloping light tattoo. It also grants the healing wave relic gift.

Finally, Pakano goes under the needle of the artist. She tattoos a grinning skull on his chest, with hunting spears crossed behind it.

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

Morning dawns quiet and bright after an eventful day. During your morning preparations, Wipa finds you and passes along a message: Grandfather Eiwa would like to see you in his tent.

In the small, squat tent where Eiwa spends his early mornings, the old man stoops beside his fire ring. His expressive face, wrinkled from many years of good humor, is now a portrait of sadness. “Come, sit,” he says. He pokes the embers with a stick. “I had hoped you would never need to hear the story I am about to tell you. Or at least I would not be the one to have to tell it.” He offers a rueful smile.

“How to make a long story short? I will try to put it simply. In the ethgir—the before times, when my ancestors were young—we Broken Tusks were called the Burning Mammoths. Our migratory route was large then, as was our herd. We carried with us a powerful light: the Primordial Flame.” He spreads the fire’s coals into a wide, flat layer. In the center of the coals, a perfectly round pebble glows, red hot. “Then, the Great Quake shattered the eastern lands.” He tips a large, jagged rock from the fire ring into the coals. “Far as we were, our people still felt the thundering hooves of the demon horde.” Earwigs and pill bugs scatter out of the hole left by the upturned stone.

“Our Mammoth Lords argued over what to do with the light,” Eiwa continues. “In the end, some of us took the Primordial Flame. We hid it where it would be safe.” With his stick, he separates a few coals from the rest, then moves the red-hot pebble next to the small group. “The others called us traitors and went east to face the demons, taking the banner of the Burning Mammoths with them. Weak but determined to carry on, we took a new name: the Broken Tusk.

“That was long ago, and much has happened since,” he says, dropping his stick into the fire. “But now, the Burning Mammoths have returned? And in time for the Night of the Green Moon. I cannot say what this means—my ancestors’ spirits are silent. But my bones tell me this will not be a happy reunion.”

Grandfather Eiwa thanks the characters for bringing news of the Burning Mammoths. He says that few other Broken Tusks—even his fellow Mammoth Lords—will recognize the importance of this turn of events, but he trusts that you can understand his concerns.

The most obvious thing that Aphotos and Fiorré notice while out on the town is that the authorities seem to have been plenty antagonized. Guard patrols of the city have visibly increased, and people hurry to their destinations, wary of tarrying in the street for idle conversation or even a few moments of Aphoto's performance.

No one at the constable's barracks is available to speak with Fiorré. "We've bigger fish to fry than one wayward servant. Count your blessings, my girl, and mind you find some gainful employment before we run you in for vagrancy," the desk sergeant warns the ersatz maid.

Overall, the atmosphere in Litran is tense--even more so than when you arrived in the city.

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

You spend a very quiet night in the hideout, muffled in the protective cocoon of magic that obscures you from any prying eyes or scans of magical surveillance.

You've discovered the following rumors (though they may have been stated in a slightly different way).
The Masque
The event’s dress code calls for costumes—complete with intricate masks, of course—and most attendees plan to appear in elaborate and expensive outfits. You arranged some appropriate couture at the Oval Mirror.

The masque is going to be at the Gray Monastery, and it will have a highly distinctive centerpiece: the final blade known as Silent Lenore has been brought into the monastery for the upcoming masque.

The Gray Gardeners
All around Galt, the Gray Gardeners have been moving the final blades from city to city. Cartographer Tristel Liendi gave you more specifics about these unusual movements--the vast majority of Galt's population is within a mile of a final blade.

Masque Attendees
You have secured entrance to the masque with High Magistrate Otvald Gharmino, and he gave you a slate of distant letters to coordinate your arrival to the event.

The Gray Monastery
The monastery is so old that it predates Galt by millennia, though it was an abandoned ruin before the Gray Gardeners established their headquarters there just over 50 years ago. Any deity or philosophy the monastery might once have been dedicated to is long forgotten. In its center is a grand ballroom, surrounded by offices, dining halls, and servants’ rooms. The Gray Gardeners maintain very few servants, all of whom live in the old monastic cells and never leave the monastery.

The Final Blades
Through direct experimentation, you have learned the final blades keep the souls of the beheaded and are enchanted to be indestructible. There must be some way to destroy them and free the souls trapped inside, but if such a method exists, no one knows it outside the Gray Gardeners.

You have a few days before the masque to try to pick up more rumors and prepare. If you want to Gather Information, I can give you some more rumors, and you can detail anything that you would like to do.

You have materials for 4x caltrops snares, 3x battering snares, and 3x poison barbs snares. Though you can't craft them without her help, yet, if you learn the Snare Crafting feat, you automatically know the recipes for these snares, in addition to the others you can pick.

Impulse and Kala Dja receive healing from their encounters with the snares and everyone settles in for the night.

As you start following the trail, Pakano clears his throat. He dips two baskets into the river, gives you all a significant look, and turns on his heel. (The slippery, mossy-covered rocks of the stream slightly spoil the effect.) Without another word, he starts trudging back toward camp.

Assuming you continue to follow the trail...

The winding river flows through a series of smooth, low-lying hills for less than a mile before something of note appears: a small, stony island in the river across from an old, dead stump. The river is still shallow enough to wade through. The water is a bit murkey, clouded by bits of what appears to be ashes floating on its surface, as though from a large fire upstream.

“Why? Why have you come?” intones a gurgling voice emanating from the river water. The ashy water splashes to and fro, partially pulling itself from the river’s gentle current. “Are you here to help me? I’ve been so polluted, and I feel so weak!”

The journey back to the following is uneventful, and your new companion tags along, making mention of various interesting rock formations and natural features during the walk.

You arrive just before sundown after doing a long day's work. Pakano steals off to his family's part of the settlement.

Shemven exclaims in pleasure when he sees the hairy mammoths and goes to frolic among them. For their part, the huge creatures seem to stoically accept his admiration and attention.

Shemven is very interested in the description of the ceremony. "Rockloom is a sacred place, for korrods too, a special space. Stones guide the fey from far and wide."

As long as she is willing, he takes her hand and presses it against the raven stone. He makes a low hum, and Kala Dja can feel the rock vibrating sympathetically.

A lovely scene, all around. Everyone take a Hero Point!

Funmi's spell wraps itself around the ersatz barker, and phantom bars rise up around him.
Will: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (7) + 29 = 36

It seems sure that the man will shake off the spell, but Funmi twitches the skein of magic at the last movement, and its shadowy threads close around him.

The roustabouts don't seem to recognize Chance's spell, and the one inside the tent is too distracted by what's going on inside.

The fey creature looks absolutely horrified and entranced by Mayael, "So...hungry!" it gasps, breathlessly.

Critical success on Fascinating Performance.

The fey practically offers its neck to Mayael, who digs in greedily. The spurt of blood is quite impressive, even for those accustomed to her hunts.

Critical. I'm going to double the initial damage. (Since it's better for you and 2e stylin')

The fey moans as its lifeblood begins to drain out.

Mayael is terrifying. Have a Hero Point!

Frozen Flame + Dragon's Demand

The halfling woman crawls out from under the desk and scrambles to find a bag and several map cases. As she's quickly rolling maps up, she pauses on one that shows a map of the whole country.

"I wish I had more time to investigate this, but it's obviously too dangerous. Oh, why did I mention the movement of the final blades to my aunt?! She's the town's biggest gossip. And that grocer didn't need to know either. Or that delivery boy! He did look a little shady."

It's evident that Tristel was not very circumspect about her research.

"I just found it so interesting that, within the week, a significant portion of the population will be within a mile of at least one of the blades."

She finishes packing relatively quickly and surveys the mess of corpses in her store. "Well, no time to clean up, I suppose. I'm sure someone will tell the landlord in a few days."

She's willing to follow you lead, as you just saved her life.

Adventure Concept:
In this Adventure Path, you and your friends take on the roles of head scouts for the Broken Tusk following—a tight-knit community of nomadic hunter-gatherers who roam the western Realm of the Mammoth Lords. The Broken Tusk is a relatively small following, numbering only several dozen currently, but with courage and ingenuity your characters can help your fellow supporters flourish. The adventure path explores the themes of exploration, growth, fellowship, perseverance, and survival.

Standard PC Creation Rules
Level: 1
Classes & Races: Any that you can justify being in the Realm of the Mammoth Lords
Available Rarities: Any Common & Uncommon options that are fit for the setting. Please check for Rare options. (Rare options are probably fine too, but let's discuss!)
Alternate Rules: GMG Free Archetype

Please read the Player's Guide when you are planning your character. It has many good tips about character creation, including appropriate skills, feats, and languages.

Campaign Expectations
Group Composition: This will be for 4-6 players, depending on interest.

Posting Frequency: I'd like people to commit to posting 1/day during the week. I typically post at least once on the weekend as well, but no worries if weekend posting doesn't work for you. I've found that campaigns that move much slower than this tend to fall apart. At times, everyone gets too busy to keep this pace sometimes (very much including me), so if you are jumping aboard just be communicative about short or long term absences. (You can be botted or step back to do something off-screen with the following.) I will be trying to keep the story moving forward, so there will be a dedicated Discord channel for interactions that you want to have more "screen time" that didn't get posted in time.

Sensitivity Concerns: The Broken Tusk following, and all of the residents of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, have a society just as sophisticated as you would find in Absalom or Taldor; it's just organized differently. It probably goes without saying, but I'm not interested in characters that act "primitive" or do things like speak in broken Common. Please also call me in if you feel like I'm indulging any problematic tropes.

Safety Tools: We'll use Lines, Veils, and X-Cards in this campaign. I'm into collaboratively setting our lines and veils after we get the group solidified. If, while we are playing, you need a safety concern addressed right away, you can also message me on Discord.

Please post if you have any questions!

Trista sketches down the map. She finds the notion of a grizzly bear rampaging through a bunch of cultists very amusing, and smiles as Helba describes the pet.

"I hope you can chat with him, Serpens. He sounds delightful!"
