Point Buy, array or rolled stats?

I'm always down for more 5e fun. The only adventure I don't have any experience playing is LMoP, but the only one I've reached the end in was CoS.

My tabletop crew is currently in AoTA, just reached level 5, but the last few adventures have a number of possible paths and outcomes written in so I'd be down to do that one too.

$: 5d4 ⇒ (3, 4, 4, 3, 3) = 17

Cool. I'll pop in after I've finished up.

I'll use this alias for now and submit a Tiefling Paladin Hermit.
Probably Oath of Conquest at 3rd Level.

I'm assuming 'all races' means from the source books listed. So no Volo's guide races and no Genasi or Aarakocra then? (Also most ppl ban the flying tiefling trait from sword coast so I'll ask about that one too.)

Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 2) = 12
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 6) = 16
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 3, 6) = 21
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 5, 5) = 16
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 3, 2) = 8
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 1) = 10
Interesting... Low->high: (7, 9, 10, 14, 15, 18)

I'll mull over a few ideas and come up with something soon.

Deft:
@Swordwhale Sounds good, I think we could use some longer range to round out the melee.

The only spell on my list that might work on Swarms was Burning Sands, which is OK, otherwise Oil is a cheap way to deal with swarms.

Deft:
Here is the Second Draft for the Inquisitor.

@Swordwhale Sure. I'm not exactly sure what a bloodrager can do but it sounds a lot like damage.

:Deft Crew: Possible Line up.
Bard - hustonj
Bloodrager-Swordwhale
Fighter -rorek55
Inquisitor -Captain Moonscar
Time Thief -Ashivla
Am I missing anyone?

Deft:
Should I go with the Branched Spear or the Fauchard as my reach weapon?

2nd Question: Conversion Inquisition gets me +4 to Diplo, Bluff and Intimidate.
Clandestine Inquisition gets me Vanish 5/day or I could go with a Domain.
Leaning toward Conversion personally.

Deft:
I'm certainly a fan of keeping Ins. Courage or going a full Sorc. build.

@rorek55 When a problem comes along, You must whip it.

Deft:
@Hustonj Full mage with a face would be nice.

@Rorek55 If you can make the whip work and have fun with it then by all means go for it.

Deft/ Build option B:

Half-Orc Inq. of Shelyn - Proficient with Glaive.
18,14,12,12,14,7
Darkvision 60
Shaman Enhancement Animal Companion gets +2 to one stat.
Sacred Tattoo: +1 Luck to all Saves
Fates Faovored, Watching Taldor
Combat Reflexes

Deft:
Buff spells, Certain domains. I can also power attack at level 2 and hold out for an agile weapon. Swaping to STR is a little tricky because I still need Dex for combat reflexes. Easiest thing is to dump Cha and up Str to a 14 and take buffs. Animal Options are still open. Flying is always nice but I could also take something that can trip or grapple if it suits party comp.

Deft:
This Link is the Inquisitor progress I've made. TLDR: Combat Reflexes with Branched Spear and an animal companion to round things out. It might not qualify as a 'bruiser' though there are a few things I can do to bring up damage.

@ gm, so.. we can make a secondary character to fit with another group?

Check out the GM's last post.

My Illusionist is mostly done, a support caster who can likely fit wherever. I'm also working on an Inquisitor because it seems fun.

I'd be fine throwing my hat with either Deft or Ghost, if they'll take me.

@GM There are some Archetypes for Inquisitor that substitute options for judgement ability, such as Umbral Stalker or Heretic. Would it be alright to take one if I've already given up the Judgement ability? (Sacred Huntsmaster is primary Archetype)

Thanks.

Character has some social skills, stealth and survival for the hot climate. Owl Familiar helps with outdoor scouting and Spells would probably depend on party composition.

I'll read up and refresh on Qadira while working on a possible background.

Considering an Elf Illusionist (Mage of the Veil), it doesn't fit the planetouched theme but I liked this idea more than Emberkin Firemage.

I'm still down, and while I've been apart of groups that large quite a few of the characters were NPC and could post all at once but I'm willing to stick it out and give it a go. He still has one unnamed living parent, somewhere, and his brother and several uncles, cousins, etc.

@Apt

I don't mind switching up my class for variety. As it's somewhat independent from the background I've chosen and the stats rolled were solid enough.

The downside to working overnights is your days blend into one another, I actually thought yesterday was sunday until just a moment ago....

I'll have a full alias up in a bit.

So there are, and with two clerics the healing will never end.

Isaiah La Fontaine:
Half-Elf Bard Noble.

"A child of uncertain birth
and of a certain name
with eyes like stone
and hair of flame
Shall save the chosen from disaster
or trade them for fortune and fame."

History
Isaiah La Fontaine was born to a noble family, at least as much as a half-elf supposedly born of two human parents can be. His mother died during childbirth leaving his father with many unanswered questions and a half-elf bastard to care for. Fortunately for Isaiah he was kept within the family albeit hidden from prying eyes, and a human replacement was found to cover his mothers misdeeds. He was raised well and provided for by his house. He got along well with his "family" but had a mostly distant relationship with his human father.

Stuck inside for a large portion of his life Isaiah spent a great deal of time studying from books and tutors while his brother was trained as a knight like their father. After his father died he was finally free of his comfortable prison and chose to set out on a journey leaving most everything to his brother and in-laws. While he harbored no ill-will against them he had felt the burden of their shame long enough and set out to become something other than the sinful symbol of his family's past.

Years of book learning had left Isaiah with a romanticized sense of the world and adventure, a few months on his own was enough to quell his delusions of grandeur. He was utterly broke and with no real world experience and that left Isaiah with little options. It wasn't long before he soon found himself standing at the doors of the infamous Solution Society.

Cool, let's see what I can put together.

I see you're planing on closing this today. I'm just about to get off of work and head home for the day. I can certainly get a character up by the end of the day but I'm not sure I can read through a new setting and create a sufficient background before then unfortunately.

Always down for a 5E game. Dotting while I read through.

I'd shoot for Brain Ooze.

You're a Dungeon Master, you're a Dungeon Master, we're all Dungeon Masters now! Mwahaha!

Sounds like a blast.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 2, 1) = 8 7
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 3) = 16 13
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 2, 4) = 15 13
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 4, 4) = 16 13
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 3, 3) = 13 11
Roll: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 4, 5) = 16 15

All odds the human dream.

How do you make Burning Hands do d6 damage and Shocking Grasp do d8?

Yup. NP.

Halo: I liked it to. I wasn't planning on using stealth anyway and it helps anyone else who may not have darkvision.

Fur Sub-Domain: is still terrible but the 1st level ability will be useful at any level. The Companion at a -5 Character level will be all but useless. Mostly a scout and a creature with scent to help track. I plan on taking scribe scroll so the random spell list it gets I can just put on paper and save for later.

Tactics: Is actually really good. The ability is useful at any level and the 8th level ability gets me feats for a few rounds per day. The spell list is all cleric spells but they are decent enough I don't mind having every day. It also fits with the warrior/valkyrie theme.

The only things I can think of are the sub-domains and maybe the Halo racial trait? I can change the domains NP, the halo I just like better than darkvision. If theres anyting else let me know.

Edit: Non-Core Stuff.

Fur Subdomian: Replaces the ability to speak with animals. I gain the ability to increase my speed and gain low-light for 1 round 3+wis times a day.

Tactics Subdomain: Replaces the ability to add 1/2 my level to damage rolls for a round. I gain the ability to roll twice on my or an allies init 3+wis times a day.

Halo replaces darkvison with the ability to cast Light as will and a +2 on saves v. Blind.

My first dnd game was Night Below.

I/Everyone died more times in that one game than any I've played since. It happens, I tend to get more attached to PBP characters but I think I'll get over it.

GM Alice, dien, and anyone else wanting to flesh out backstories more deeply and discuss the setting, head over here.

That way we can keep this thread focused on figuring out who we have in the roster so far.

Is this for people already accepted or anyone still working on a character?

---
As a lesser god does Freya have a 'Church' to speak of?

I'm working on a backstory and I need to know how one would become a priestess of Freya.

A much better option than Sefagreth. Alright flavor, good domains and whip proficiency is interesting. I'm probably going to laugh every time I say Tykee. Ohhh, Myyy.

I'm not stuck on the Crarm domain. I just thought the Love sub-domain was better than anything on her portfolio. The animal domain is just useless more so with an extra fighter level in there. Healing too might as well throw away my bonus spells.

If I choose Freya it's going to be Tactics (War), and Good.

The domains I'm most interested in are:
Good or Chaos then Luck or Travel. Tykee 3/4 so she's definitely worth considering.

What I have so far Will be better formatted once I get home. [Cleric 1, Fighter 1] Once I decide between Freya and Sefagreth I can start on a background. The god I like with mediocre domains or the generic city god with some of the best domains. Grrr.

That's fine. I don't think there will be an issue with WBL, I was just thinking worst case scenario.

One of the Charm domains is love only reason I brought it up. I'm not picking the deity because of the domain it just so happened Freya was the one I liked and the love domain is both good and fitting.

---

I understand there are situations the group won't be able to tackle. There's a CR 18 werewolf anti-pally in another game I'm in. Were level 5 and as much as we want to kick his ass were not going near that guy. Made that mistake once.

In a situation with a dragon like that our gear would be irrelevant for the most part.

I'm trying to find a better way of putting this than "It's only a problem if it's a problem." Here's my best shot, assuming the group is in a place they're supposed to be.

Stuff:
The game makes certain assumptions with gear and that's taken into account when determining the kind of challenges the party is capable of undertaking. If that is ignored people are going to die. That's my concern.

With 150g A 2nd level fighter can only afford scalemale and a buckler. +6 AC.
With 1000g a fighter can have splint male and a heavy shield. +8 AC. And a MW weapon as well.

Now on a d20 that's 10% more likely to be hit and 5% less likely to hit. May not seem like a lot but when the CR chart is a curve things can go south fast. Especially at low levels.

HP: 1d10 ⇒ 1
HP: 1d10 ⇒ 7

Roll for Fighter HP

HP for 2nd level, roll or average?

1) Not a problem. I find character driven games much more fun.

2) Not a problem.

3) Doesn't need to be exact, but for instance starting level 2 with 150g is almost 1/10th the WBL chart. Which is fine so long as it's taken into account during encounters. If there is a significant gap APL should be adjusted.

4) Can't answer until I've flushed the character out more.

Speaking of which...

Would you be alright with Freya getting the Charm domain? Goddess of Love and Fertility and all.

Do we have to meet the prereq's of the Bonus Feat at 1st level? or can it be 2nd?

No love for the Half Giants...

Survey for Applicants

*What is your posting availability like? What do you like in terms of pace for PbP?

*How familiar are you with the setting? Have you run or played in Necromancer/FGG modules before?

*How many PbP do you currently participate in? Player or GM?

*What does "Old School" mean to you?

*Would you have still been interested in this campaign if it was CRB only? Why or why not?

1) I work at a hotel, front desk. I spend most of my day waiting for the phone to ring. So I'm online at least half the day with paizo open in a tab.

2) None and Nope.

3) 2 at the moment. Player in both, one new and one for over a year now. I've got an open application in a 3rd, but it's a very slow game if I were to get in.

4) The oldest TTRPG i've played is 2e, a few times. I enjoy the feel of 2e and I love how anything not combat based is entirly DM and PC roleplaying and not dictated by pesky skill points.

5) Yes. Keeping options limited just means a more balanced and flavorful party. I could easly replicate an elemental bloodline from a RP standpoint, without the need for a whole seperate race.

-----

Have to do paper work now but if you could link me to some campaign world info or just give me a brief run down that would be much appreciated.

Alignment? and would you be open to allowing the elemental races?
(Ifrit, Oread, Sylph, and Undine / Fire, Earth, Wind and Water, respectively)

Everyone's so impatient or just really excited to use 3rd party stuff, it's not often you see a game where anything goes.

I'll probably be watching this one even if my last minute sub doesn't get picked.

I'll build the Psion soon.

Have we decided on the type of Zombie apocalypse? Is it a natural phenomenon, something brought by an existing undead, by mortal men, by the gods, so on and so on.

Jaer Coldwater wrote:

We're pretty heavy on ranged-focus so far. I suppose that makes sense; anybody focused on getting up close and personal is more likely to have ended up a zombie. :)

You don't even know.

Still around. What are the 4 characters so far?
