The Solution Society Needs New Heroes (5e D&D)

Recruitment

Welcome to the second round of recruitment for the game

Castle Caldwell and Beyond

I am looking for 2 or 3 new player characters to join the existing group, which has been reduced to three

Magnus – Human (Vayangurr), Male, Cleric
Klodd – Dwarven (Baylor), Male, Cleric
Ayita – Elven (Ireshian), Female, Monk

This is a “by the book” no house rules, 5e D&D game set in the campaign world of Alodoa

Campaign Setting

New characters joining this adventure will be second level, and will join the adventure with chapter two of the original “Castle Caldwell and Beyond” module for Basic Dungeons and Dragons (B9) which is being adapted for 5e play.

If you would like to join post here with your character idea, and please take a look at the original recruitment thread for the particulars of character creation

Recruitment Guidelines for this Adventure

I look forward to questions and comments, and hope, sincerely, that we can find some new players to keep this game alive.

Thank you

Did I leave out something important?

Oh well

Hi the game sounds cool and I'd like to submit Grinling Durandal, Human Fighter/Rogue with the Criminal Background. I made this character for another game but the concept has been in my mind for a while.

I'll need to adapt it for second level but I think he'd fit in well with what I've read so far

Scarab Sages

Sorry, I seemed to have missed this the first time it was posted. I'm interested. I only recently read up a bit on 5th edition and I've been looking to try it out. I'll check over your campaign stuff and see if I can work on a character idea that fits!

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

Is there any type of character you're looking for in particular? I'm open to playing a lot of stuff and trying out just about anything in this edition.

This party could really use an arcane spell user

Terquem wrote:

Hey Terquem that's my preferred character type and if that's what you're really looking for do you want me to submit a spellcaster?

Dark Archive

Hi there! =)

Character submission from Atlas2112

As it just so happens, this Warlock got to level 2...and then the game died.

Hence I'm ready and raring to go!

Just say the word. =)

Hi again

This is Niyaga's submission- I'll stick with the Fighter Rogue

Cheers!

Grand Lodge

Howdy! As Wolfgang, this character was part of a campaign that went ded, much to my demise. He is level 3, so I'd have to kick him down a notch.

His backstory and such will be what they are, but I may switch to ranger (Idea is to multiclass between ranger and fighter).

Quick question regarding character creation: is still the stat generation method roll or 27 point buy? And what woulf happen if roll is abysmally abysmal?

I'm having some minor Internet access issues this morning so I am reading what has been posted and posting this response from my phone, which I believe Hates me. I will respond in detail later today

Scarab Sages

Arcane spellcaster it is! I'll work on an idea tonight and see if I can't make something up!

Scarab Sages

Given the lack of Charisma going around, I was thinking of trying out the new bard. (Mainly because bards are my favorite class and the new 5th edition version seems...interesting.) However, as a long time and devoted player of all things Wizard, I wouldn't mind applying with one if you'd prefer that as an arcane caster!

I could take four new characters in this game easy, let me see what we’ve got

Niyaga – Grinling looks great, were you thinking about maybe taking a background?

Aptinuvial – I’ll wait to see what you come up with

Atlas2112 – Wolfgang looks good as well, again I’d like you to think about a background

Alexander Ironwill – I find it odd that you have a Pathfinder Society alias for a D&D 5e recruitment. Are you sure you want to do that. I know the title of the recruitment thread may have been misleading, what with the word society in it. Let me know if you still want to play

I will wait till about Sunday to wrap this up, by then, if you really want to join this game I’d respectfully ask you to go to that Journal link and learn as much about the setting as you are willing to read.
The Solution Society has hired a special team, dubbed, “The Wrecking Crew” to clear out the ruins of Castle Caldwell, which lies close to a bridge and crossroad on the main road between Pawkatuket and Seaport, in Harrispania. The first post in the recruitment thread is a good idea to read as well.
Each character should have a background, and can be from any country in Aladoa, including Urandoma, which is off the east coast.

Scarab Sages

Reading through some of the other background info now. I'll probably have a character up tomorrow evening.

Thanks very much Terquem- I could sit and create characters all day!

Grinling's Background is 'Criminal' and is alluded to in his Background. However he has reformed now, regrets his terrible crimes (and wants to keep his past a secret) and wishes to help people (good) whilst still retaining a little cold neutrality (neutral)

I can flesh him out a bit more?

For Grinling, choosing a country of origin will go a log way to establishing who he is. Vurispania, Palicadia, Harrispania, or who knows, maybe the city state of tarule

Dark Archive

Eh? Are you saying that I didn't actually post my background to my character?

...

Oh no I didn't actually post my background to the character!!1!

...

Okay, I've taken care of that now. And if you meant 'backstory' I've taken care of that now too.
Oh my...it's been a while since I read that and it's a little bit of a spine-tingler. There are some background points to be pointed out.
*shudder*

I think Baravkovia, to the west of Harrispania, is a perfect place to set Wolfgng's background.

We have done very little to flesh out Baravkovia, other than to say it is a "Ravenloft-esque" setting, and that it was at war with Alodoa just a year ago. Baravkovia's Queen is now a vassal to the Emperor of Alodoa.

We could say that Wolfgang, who only recently left his county in Baravkovia, was not inv0olved in the Baravkovian rebellion, and now that Alodoa is forcing the Queen of that country to open its borders to travel both to and from Alodoa, he has set out for Harrispania, where he learned of the organization known as the Solution Society.

The rest of the current members of the Wrecking Crew are on a sort of "probation" but as more than half of those members have left the Solution Society in favor of other opportunities, it became necessary to hire new members and send them to assist the Wrecking Crew.

This new group of heroes of the Society should choose an appropriate name for their group. This group and the Wrecking Crew will need to work together as the mysteries of the Castle are unraveled.

However, Grinling will be assigned to the Wrecking Crew under an agreement between Branhilde, the leader of the Solution Society at the Chapel Hill Lodge, and the Sheriff of Pawkatukit (if that is acceptable to you Grinling).

Scarab Sages

Working on a bard. A historian, or at least someone very deeply interested in history. But who, of course, needs some funding and is good at solving problems. So, the wrecking crew it is!

I'm thinking of making him from whatever the capital of Harrispania is? (Is there one listed? I wasn't able to see it in my quick read of the background material.)

No problem Terquem. I've PM'd you with some ideas- Grinling can fit in easily anywhere as he began life as a slave but grew up in a big city- best to just define the city. See PM- do you have any suggestions for this city that already occurs in the game setting?

Scarab Sages

I'm guessing we should just detail starting equipment and worry about more than that if the character is accepted?

Liberty's Edge

I'd love to roll someone up to put forward. I'll just spoiler up some ability rolls here, and go from there. :)

Current thought is a Gnome wizard. Will flesh out more and post before the night is out replete with detail.

Ability rolls!:

Ability Roll!: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 1, 2) = 8 (drop 1, 7)
Ability Roll!: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 4, 6) = 17 (drop 2, 15)
Ability Roll!: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 6, 5) = 16 (drop 1, 15)
Ability Roll!: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 4, 5) = 14 (drop 2, 12)
Ability Roll!: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4, 5) = 15 (drop 1, 14)
Ability Roll!: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 6, 6) = 23 (drop 5, 18)

18, 15, 15, 14, 12, 7 before racial mods. Not TOO shabby. :)

Scarab Sages

I swear my reading comprehension is usually much better than this. I didn't even notice that we roll for stats! (It's been a rough week.)

4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1, 5) = 17 16
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 1) = 19 18
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 3) = 12 11
4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 4) = 16 13
4d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 4, 5) = 20 16
4d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 4, 4) = 16 13

I have most of the character finished up. I'll finish it up tonight and get a background/personality posted along with the sheet!

Scarab Sages

Here's Ashley Bishop, the half-elven bard from Harrispania. I've left the details of his background deliberately vague, but the main idea is there. He usually goes by just his first name, Ashley, or Ash. However, people have recently started calling him Bishop, and have unofficially given him the surname, because of his tendency to fiddle with a small glass chess piece.

Ashley doesn't talk about his past and if he could, he'd be happy to forget most of it. Oddly, given his poor beginnings, he's not actually interested in money or treasure so much as knowledge and fame. He knows he can survive without money. What he fears is being forgotten and dying as just another member of the masses.

Spellcasting Focus: You can use a musical instrument as a spellcasting focus for your bard spells.
Bardic Inspiration: You can inspire others through stirring words or music. To do so, you use a bonus action on your turn to choose one creature other than yourself within 60 feet of you who can hear you. That creature gains one Bardic Inspiration die, a d6. Once within the next 10 minutes, the creature can roll the die and add the number rolled to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw it makes. The creature can wait until after it rolls the d20 before deciding to use the Bardic Inspiration die, but must decide before the DM says whether the roll succeeds or fails. Once the Bardic Inspiration die is rolled, it is lost. A creature can have only one Bardic Inspiration die at a time. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (a minimum of once). You regain any expended uses when you finish a long rest. Your Bardic Inspiration die changes when you reach certain levels in this class. The die becomes a d8 at 5th level, a d10 at 10th level, and a dl2 at 15th level.
Jack of all Trades: Starting at 2nd level, you can add half your proficiency bonus, rounded down, to any ability check you make that doesn’t already include your proficiency bonus.
Song of Rest: Beginning at 2nd level, you can use soothing music or oration to help revitalize your wounded allies during a short rest. If you or any friendly creatures who can hear your performance regain hit points at the end of the short rest, each of those creatures regains an extra 1d6 hit points. The extra hit points increase when you reach certain levels in this class: to 1d8 at 9th level, to 1d10 at 13th level, and to 1d12 at 17th level.

RACIAL TRAITS:

Half-Elf
Ability Score Increase: Your Charisma score increases by 2, and two other ability scores of your choice increase by 1.

Speed: Your base walking speed is 30 feet.
Darkvision: Thanks to your elf blood, you have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. You can see in dim light within 60 feet of you as if it were bright light, and in darkness as if it were dim light. You can’t discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.
Fey Ancestry: You have advantage on saving throws against being charmed, and magic can’t put you to sleep.
Skill Versatility: You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice.
Languages: You can speak, read, and write Common, Elvish, and one extra language of your choice.

Feature: You know the secret patterns and flow to cities and can find passages through the urban sprawl that others would miss. When you are not in combat, you (and companions you lead) can travel between any two locations in the city twice as fast as your speed would normally allow.

Personality Trait: I sleep with my back to a wall or tree, with everything I own wrapped in a bundle in my arms.
Ideal: Respect. All people, rich or poor, deserve respect.
Bond: I owe a debt I can never repay to the person who took pity on me.
Flaw: I will never fully trust anyone other than myself.

Growing up on the streets of a large city was rough for a young half-elven child. His parents, immigrants from Iarishea, came to Harrispania shortly after he was born. Looked down upon by the local populace they had a hard time finding work to provide for their family. Honest work, at least. When he was very young, Ashley's father simply didn't return home one night. Whether due to being caught up and killed in some criminal activity, or just uninterested in the burden of family, there was no sign of him. His mother was driven into an early grave shortly after, attempting to provide for the family. Disease took both his older sister and brother and his younger brother died in jail, after being convicted of petty crimes.

Left to his own devices as a child he did what he had to do to survive. He avoided becoming a criminal (mostly) and scraped for what he needed. As he grew older it became harder and harder to survive without committing some petty crimes. It was during one of these hard times that he stumbled upon a member of the Solution Society. He stole the man's purse, but returned all that he didn't need to pay for food. Unfortunately (or fortunately, in a certain light), his attempt to return the remaining gold was discovered. The adventurer found this behavior curious and instead of punishing the poor vagrant, offered him a job.

Life was good for a short time. But, as with all things, this came to an end. The life of a member of the Solution Society is dangerous and Ashley's mentor was killed during an investigation into some criminal activity in the city. Despite never learning the game, he still carries one of the chess pieces of his mentor's set as a reminder.

Description:
Ashley is handsome man in his mid-thirties. His hair is black and roguishly unkempt. He's obviously accustomed to traveling given his tanned skin and well worn clothes. The rapier at his side is old but serviceable. In fact, the lute strapped to his backpack is the only thing remotely new looking, and even that looks like it's seen better days.

I present Wylla 'Opaleye' Spingle, Gnome Wizard and jeweler. Her background is certainly open for modification to fit in the mythos of the world for Gnomes and such.

Starting Gold: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6) = 14 x 10 = 140 gp
2nd level HP: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 Total HP: 17

Always down for a 5E game. Dotting while I read through.

I see you're planing on closing this today. I'm just about to get off of work and head home for the day. I can certainly get a character up by the end of the day but I'm not sure I can read through a new setting and create a sufficient background before then unfortunately.

I'm looking at getting he final characters selected late Sunday, if that will work for you.

One quick note.

Niyaga is the first player to mention slavery in this setting (which, although this is not technically a world building game, it is set in the Woodbridge Campaign setting of my actual world building game, "The Beginning of All Things," and any world building that you might want to do will be considered.

So, we mentioned in the beginning of this game that there is a country of Goblins/Orcs, south of Alodoa, a land of coastal swaps, and dark inland forests, a place known as the City States of Tarule, and this will be the only place where slavery is part of the culture.

I'm also thinking of doing something sort of unorthodox in making Hobgoblins Good in this setting

Good hobgoblins would be an interesting turn, for sure. Also, after reading through the collected information about Alodoa, this whole concept of essentially crowdsourced world building is amazing. Id love to be involved with world building in some fashion, regardless of whether or not Wylla gets in.

Cool, let's see what I can put together.

Isaiah La Fontaine:
Half-Elf Bard Noble.

"A child of uncertain birth
and of a certain name
with eyes like stone
and hair of flame
Shall save the chosen from disaster
or trade them for fortune and fame."

History
Isaiah La Fontaine was born to a noble family, at least as much as a half-elf supposedly born of two human parents can be. His mother died during childbirth leaving his father with many unanswered questions and a half-elf bastard to care for. Fortunately for Isaiah he was kept within the family albeit hidden from prying eyes, and a human replacement was found to cover his mothers misdeeds. He was raised well and provided for by his house. He got along well with his "family" but had a mostly distant relationship with his human father.

Stuck inside for a large portion of his life Isaiah spent a great deal of time studying from books and tutors while his brother was trained as a knight like their father. After his father died he was finally free of his comfortable prison and chose to set out on a journey leaving most everything to his brother and in-laws. While he harbored no ill-will against them he had felt the burden of their shame long enough and set out to become something other than the sinful symbol of his family's past.

Years of book learning had left Isaiah with a romanticized sense of the world and adventure, a few months on his own was enough to quell his delusions of grandeur. He was utterly broke and with no real world experience and that left Isaiah with little options. It wasn't long before he soon found himself standing at the doors of the infamous Solution Society.

I think that both half elf bards are great, as long as both players know that there are two half elf bards, ;)

So there are, and with two clerics the healing will never end.

I'll have a full alias up in a bit.

Greetings.

The downside to working overnights is your days blend into one another, I actually thought yesterday was sunday until just a moment ago....

Characters I see so far

Niyaga – Gringling Durandall – Human/Tarule male (Alias created)
Aptinuviel – Ashley Bishop – Halfelf/ Iarishea-Alodoan male (Alias?)
Atlas2112 – Wolfgang VonGoethe – Human/Baravkovia male (Alias created)
EmisarryOfTheNorth – Alexander Ironwill – Human/Alodoan male (Pathfinder Society Alias?)
Bimnotten Daergal – Wylla ‘Opaleye’ Spingle – Gnome/? Female (Alias created)
Flashohol - Isaiah La Fontaine – Halfelf/Iarishea-Alodoan (Alias created)

My thoughts

Grinling is a well thought out character (though I am not a big fan of orphans or characters with slavery as their background, but I will set that aside to include this in the story)

Ashkey is a well thought out character (again, not fond of orphan characters backgrounds, but going the extra mile to include the aspect of Iarishean Elves and their place in the campaign really makes a difference here). Do I understand that his father was the human parent from Harrispania?

Wolfgang is a well thought out character, the background adds all kinds of plot elements I can weave into the current adventure (though you did not mention Baravkovia by name, your description of the character's background, in my opinion, would match a Baravkovian very well)

Alexander is a well thought out character (I am still not sure why you chose a Pathfinder Society Alias?). The character's background could easily be placed into the uprising of BAravkovia against Alodoa. We would just want to decide who's side he was on (I think you might begin to see why I am not a fan of orphan backgrounds)

Wylla is a well thought out character, and adds a new race to the setting, which I am excited about

Isaiah is a well thought out character (who narrowly avoids being another orphan, haha)

This would give us a party of 8 if all five players mentioned above are serious about joining.

That is what I'd like to ask

Would you please try to post today if you are still interested in joining this game

Some things I would like to make sure you know

I have been posting less regularly lately, but I have no intention of leaving this community, or ending any of my games. I am 52 years old, I have a good job (been in the position for thirteen years) and the only life events that seem to set me back lately are some minor health issues. But again, I am not going to end this game unless all the players decide to quit.

This game is not specifically a world building game (The Beginning of All Things, set on a large island country off the east coast of Alodoa, is a world building game) but any player who is interested in developing the setting with me, is welcome to make suggestions and participate in expanding the world

All of the characters submitted are invited to join the game. If you want to play, and post your intention to give a go here, I will PM you a short bit of background to get you placed right at the castle, with the current three active player characters.

I hope to get the game moving forward, the next chapter in the adventure, tomorrow

I hope I didn't miss anyone. If I did, please PM me and I will fix the list

Scarab Sages

I'm still interested, though a party that large could get very unwieldy. Also, I'm not sure how well a second Bard (especially since both seem to be going the College of Lore route) would be. I'm guessing that at some point, one or the other of us would feel left out. After all, we pretty much exactly cover each others shtick.

As for character notes: Both parents are from Iarishea, though his mother was human. Though, as I think on it, she could have been from Harrispania if that works better. The important part is that his father was an immigrant elf trying to make his way in a new world and failing to rise above his station. On that note, I too am not a huge fan of orphans as a fantasy character's background. But after reading about Iarishea I couldn't pass up pushing the immigrant idea. I think the character concept works (and is even significantly better) if his mother is still alive. He still grew up *practically* on the streets, having to make his own way, given his large amount of siblings and lack of any household income.

My other attempt to make the character a bit less "orphan-standard" was to make him older. He's in his mid-30's and isn't a teenage orphan suddenly going out in the world. He's got plenty of friends, just no actual family or people he considers family, at the moment.

But with all that said, given the great interest in the game, I'd be willing to sit out and watch the game for a bit.

Certainly still interested!

I'm still down, and while I've been apart of groups that large quite a few of the characters were NPC and could post all at once but I'm willing to stick it out and give it a go. He still has one unnamed living parent, somewhere, and his brother and several uncles, cousins, etc.

@Apt

I don't mind switching up my class for variety. As it's somewhat independent from the background I've chosen and the stats rolled were solid enough.

Ready to go!

Dark Archive

Do you mean for us to post here or the Discussion of the actual game? =)

Since we've got continuity, can we say that Wolfgang and Alexander know each other? It makes sense, since they're level 2, they would have had some adventures.

Also, I'll field the question of the Pathfinder Society Alias. Methinks he, like I did when I first started, just made a new profile, without yet knowing the difference. (I have about a dozen PFS alias, and I think only one is actually used for its intended purpose. =)

Wolfgang
Grinling
Wylla

Please visit the discussion thread of the game, and post an introduction there. Please introduce yourself as a player, and tell us a little bit about your character (try not to give us all your background, let us find those things out in the game as it is played)

Alexander hasn't responded to any posts here so I think he might not be following this thread anymore
